Ch 31. Deduction

"I'm sorry, but today is Sunday, our holy day. You won't be able to enter the church unless you are a Holy Knight or Sister."

  "..."

Leox's plans for the day were ruined, as he realised there was no way for him to visit Ivy. It seemed that it would have to wait for another day. So instead, he headed back to the Academy Grounds and decided to pay someone else a visit.

  ---

Leox peeked through the glass of the Year One medical room and saw Doctor Snow seated in a chair with no students currently in care. After knocking, he entered.

Doctor Snow looked up at the entrance, and when she spotted the boy who had visited her the first day, a smirk spread across her face. After further inspection, that smirk switched to a look of astonishment.

"Second stage already, huh? I expected nothing less of you."

Doctor Snow was now wearing white glasses that matched her snow-white hair. Leox found himself trying to hide his joy at the praise.

"It's all thanks to Gutaru's assignment. He's made us hunt a grade-two demon."

Snow nodded and laughed. "I've heard. Do you know how many students have come back to me, bloodied and injured? They're lucky the Holy Knights are so diligent."

Leox only realised then how strange it must be for him to have managed to complete the assignment without facing any injuries. He decided that in the future, he would create a non-fatal wound for himself that wouldn't heal without aid.

"Doctor Snow, do you think you could maybe, lie for me... It's just, I don't want people to find it suspicious that I completed the task without facing any—"

"Yes, yes. I'll say that I patched you up, boy. Don't worry, I am an ally, whether you decide to trust me or not."

Leox let out a sigh of relief. That was one problem sorted.

"Now then, I'm sure you didn't just visit to say hello. What can I do for you?"

During their last conversation, they were interrupted by a student in need of medical attention. Doctor Snow had just finished explaining how her brother had been deemed mad due to his desperate desire to study immortality. After having a week to think about it, he realised that there was a very important question that he wanted to know.

"You mentioned before that your brother, Doctor Frost, had been given titles in many different places. Do you know where these places are?"

Doctor Snow thought for a moment with a finger placed to her chin.

"Hmm, he was given the title 'One-Eyed Failure' during his time spent in the northern country, Ghal. Supposedly he had found a Chronomancer with the ability to age themselves, and tried to experiment on them. The exact details of these experiments are unknown, but the Chronomancer died after a failed experiment. Supposedly, he had given Frost permission to experiment, but his death led to Frost being deemed a failure."

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

Leox was left confused after hearing this.

"What is a Chronomancer?" He asked.

"Ah, I forget you're just a farmer. A Chronomancer is a Mage with the ability to control time within their limits. Frost must have used these powers to test the concept of death and immortality."

Hearing this, Leox realised that even though it was indirect, his immortality played a part in this mage's death. He pushed this thought to the back of his mind.

"What about his other titles. You said he was called the Mad Scientist as well?"

"Yes, he was." Doctor Snow sighed. "This was from his time spent in the western country, Anaris. The details are not exact once again, but it's said that Frost performed experiments on an awakened being with the ability to leave their physical body and enter a spectral-like state. Once again, these were done with permission, but still he failed, leaving the awakened trapped in the spectral state. Hehe, I guess if that spectre is still alive, then Frost figured out what he wanted."

This story was even more unnerving than the first. Leox swiftly began to realise why Frost was known in many corners of the world as a madman. But to what end?

He must have eventually figured out something.

"The last title of his that I'm aware of, is the Fallen Doctor. This was earned in none other than Varadna."

Leox leaned forward in his chair, listening closely.

"This was his oldest title given to him, and it was when he returned to the Undying City, with you."

Doctor Snow's voice trailed off for a moment. An expression of sadness spread across her face. It took her a few moments to continue, but eventually she did.

"Like myself, Frost grew up here, in this academy. He had the potential to become one of the greatest medics of all time. Yet when he came back to me after he travelled with a baby in his hands, speaking about immortality, and the absence of death... I couldn't believe it. I was filled with disappointment..."

Doctor Snow looked down at her feet, no longer able to meet Leox's eye. It was then that it became clear to him.

"You gave him that title, didn't you?" He asked.

Doctor Snow's silence was all the confirmation he needed.

It all started to make sense to him. It was strange for a sister to have no clue where her brother was, especially since there was no clear sign of the siblings falling out. That was because when Frost came to her with what he believed to be the greatest discovery ever, she shut him down, and labelled him a failure.

This fact still hurt Snow to this day. Leox found it obvious that the woman regretted her decisions back then. But what was done was done. Sulking did not help him find answers. Still, her information was helpful, as he was able to deduce a few things from the information she had given him.

"Thank you, Doctor Snow," Leox said, rising to his feet. The woman nodded her head to him, deep in her thoughts, as he made his way towards the exit.

Before leaving, he turned back to her once more.

"When I find Doctor Frost, I will tell him that you're sorry for what you did."

Doctor Snow looked up at him, eyes slightly wide with surprise. Afterwards, she sighed and smiled slightly.

"Thank you, Leox. I would like that."

  ---

On the way back to his dorm room, Leox went over the information he had received from Doctor Snow. She had spoken of the locations in which Doctor Snow had earned his titles. The Western Country, Anaris. The Northern Country, Ghal. The Southern Country Varadna.

The man had already been to those locations and earned himself a bad reputation over the last few years. Of course, there was more than one city in each country, and many towns and villages, but through deductions, it was clear that there were some places that Frost had either not yet travelled to, or had a fine reputation in.

The Eastern Country, Haide, and the Central Country, Pentagon.

If there was any place that Doctor Frost was most likely to be, it would be in one of those two places. Leox decided that he would keep an eye out for any information in those countries, and if ever given the chance to, he would travel there, hoping to find Doctor Frost.

The rumours can't all be true. There was a reason why Doctor Frost found me, and he was so desperate to study immortality. All of his efforts couldn't have gone to waste, could they? What was he trying to discover?

For the time being, he stopped thinking about the mystery of his immortality, and continued with the rest of his day, in preparation for tomorrow. After all, the classes would begin once again, and who knew what Professor Gutaru had in store for the Class One students next?
