Fair warning, this chapter gets a bit gross!
Anath would have preferred to prepare the vile concoction outside. But with the demon somewhere, it wasn’t safe. They ended up setting it up in a hallway that was wide enough to hold them all.
The goblinoids didn’t know about brew day. It was the week before the winter solstice. She didn’t know when that was exactly. But it had to be close enough. They had even found a chalice!
Hunter had a fire going with a pot heating. He had a cloth over his face, just as she did. Zuss, too, but that was normal.
“So, what exactly is this? A ritual?” Elyndris asked with a tone of worry.
“It’s brew day!” Anath replied.
“The day children face their first trial,” Hunter added, a hint of a smile in his voice.
“Do you want to tell the story, or can I?” Anath asked Hunter.
“Go ahead.” He said.
“Gather round, chi- uh, friends. And hear the tale of brew day," Anath began. Zuss, Klaw, Daggat, and Elyndris all shuffled closer to hear the story. “Long ago, before the time of the chalice, there was a great city!”
“What’s the time of the chalice?” Daggat asked. Zuss smacked him on the back of the head.
“Let her tell the story. I want to hear it," Zuss hissed.
“Yeah, shut up,” Klaw added.
“As I was saying…” Anath had a motherly tone. “Sickness and death plagued this city. They were at war with monsters, who threw over the walls the most vile, stinky, and gross stuff you can imagine.” All six of her limbs mimed throwing.
“The Heaven’s Sword saw this and wept. He descended upon the city and presented a chalice. The purging chalice. In it, he put all the filth, bile, and sickness the monsters had wrought upon the city.”
“The dead, too,” Hunter added.
“Hush, you said I could tell it! Anyway, the angel said to the people, ‘Come forth and drink, and you will never fall ill again.’ But it was no mercy. This was a trial. Those who drank from the chalice gained every sickness and disease all at once. But those who lived were cured. They never got sick again.”
“So… we need this special chalice then?” Daggat asked.
“The angel gave the-” Hunter started.
“Hunter! I’m telling it!” Anath balled her hands into fists. Hunter went wide-eyed and tended to his pot of water. “The angel made it a feat. Now, we need to make our own vile concoction for it to work.”
“Wait… then, drink it?” Elyndris asked hesitantly. Anath nodded enthusiastically. “I don’t really need it, right? Right? I’ll just avoid the muck and-” Daggat cut her off.
“Nah, Elyndris. We are fighting zombies. You need disease protection.” He pointed at the pot. “So, that isn’t very… vile. It’s just water.”
“Can I tell them the next part?” Hunter asked cautiously.
“Ugh, fine," Anath huffed. She told the fun part, at least.
“We follow the ritual. Every family is a little different. But each of us finds the grossest thing we can find and adds it to the pot! Then we bathe to wash ourselves of the impurities. Next is the sweets!”
Anath’s eyes sparkled at the mention of sweets.
“Do we have any? I haven’t had a sweet since my brew day when I was little. Do we? Do we?” She didn’t see any sweets, but maybe he found some.
“Oh, hold on,” Zuss said. She ran forward, past Hunter, and kicked a corpse wood square in the chest. It collapsed. “Sorry about that; continue.”
“It’s a surprise,” Hunter said. Anath frowned at him. Stupid ogre! Now she has to wait to find out. “Now, everyone, go find something to add to the pot!” He laughed evilly.
Anath ran off as the goblins hooted and hollered, seeking their putrid additions to the brew. Traditionally, it was the family that added to the pot, and usually, they followed a family recipe. But this will do.
Anath had an idea of what to grab. Into the kitchen, she ran.
There, she went to the back of the kitchen and into the cellar. There, Zuss had found it. A mass of fuzz and mold in a jar. When she took off the lid, a pungent scent drifted from the pot. Cheese. Who knows how old?
It was sitting on top of an old cloth. She lifted the cloth, and it ripped. Anath groaned. The pot was too heavy; it was quite large.
She almost reached in to grab it with her hands until she had an idea. She urged the spider to grab it. One of its legs reached in and prodded the mass. A sour, cheesy smell exploded from the pot, and Anath gagged. It was hard and crumbly, but the layers of mold held it together like a net. Carefully, the leg speared and lifted the nearly half-century-old cheese.
She held her nose as she carried it back to the pot.
“Moldy cheese.” She said as she dropped the cheese into the pot. Then she spat into the pot. Only Elyndris was there. She crawled in circles.
“This is a bad idea. What if it’s too strong? Or too weak?”
“Well, if it’s too strong, you could die. It happens sometimes, I heard. Too weak, and you just get sick for a while. But you’re tough. Practically a dragon! So, we need to go strong.” Elyndris let out a distressed noise.
Hunter came back, and he plopped a mass of brown gunk into the pot, then spat in the pot.
“Ooh, what did you get?” Anath asked. This was fun; now she knew why the adults liked it. They got to torment someone for their own good.
"Birdie's hairballs!” He announced, proudly. Elyndris gagged.
Zuss was next to arrive. She scraped a mass from a bowl into the pot. It had a beak and many insect legs.
“Mashed centipede, maggots, and a bird's head.”
“Gross!” Anath laughed. “Now you have to spit in the pot.” Zuss did so after only a slight hesitation.
“Uh, I just remembered I… uh… need to do something important.” Elyndris pounced into the air and tried to fly away. Hunter caught her. She struggled violently, but Hunter held her tightly.
“Oh, no you don’t. This is a special day for you! Everyone only gets one brew day.” He told her. Elyndris made a sobbing noise.
Klaw trotted in holding a dirty mass with his bare hands and something else in his elbow. He tossed it in, and the concoction splashed out of the pot. Everyone took a step back. Was it eating away at the floor? It must have been her imagination.
“Daggat’s sick! Oh, and…” he revealed the object in his arm, “a skull!” He plopped the skull into the pot. It was almost full. Anath winced. A skull was a bit morbid.
“A SKULL?!” Elyndris shrieked. Anath couldn’t help it; her reaction was too funny. She laughed hard enough to hurt her ribs. She must have looked like a witch. Unkempt hair, dirty, wearing animal skins, and cackling over a cauldron with a floating skull in it. Not to mention the company of monsters.
Anath didn’t care. This was fun.
Klaw, too, spat in the pot.
Finally, Daggat sauntered in, holding a bag that smelled like a corpse.
“Cuttings from the lady's corpse flower.” Into the pot it went. It was good to get your veggies.
Hunter handed Anath the struggling worm as she instructed him to spit into the pot. It was tradition. He did.
“You can’t do this! This is torture!” Everyone in the room grinned at her like cats grinning at a caught mouse.
Hunter slowly stirred the pot. It began to bubble and pop. Each burp released a cloud of stench. The two skulls, a dwarf and a bird, drifted to the top. Anath gagged. She was lucky she had already drunk her brew. It was the last winter before her mother's… accident. Back when they allowed her to roam the house.
Finally, it was ready. Hunter took the fine glass chalice and filled it to the brim with black and green sludge. It had the consistency of thick gravy.
“Okay, time for the purging chalice!” he announced.
“No! Wait! Let’s talk about this. A wing? Take a wing instead. Or maybe just toss me into the fire. Anything but this!” Hunter brought the chalice closer and closer to the struggling worm.
“Come on, drink it! I did," Anath said.
“Yeah! Drink it! What are you, a coward?” Klaw heckled.
“Drink it!” Daggat yelled. “Drink! Drink!” They all joined in on the chant.
“Drink! Drink! Drink!”
Anath dipped the worm muzzle-first into the sludge. She wriggled and fought. But she must have already used burst of strength to fight Hunter's grip earlier. Then, she gulped.
“She did it!” Anath announced with glee, then lifted the worm in the air. Everyone cheered and clapped. Elyndris coughed, sputtered, and vomited. Anath let her go.
The worm caught itself with her wings and drifted to the ground, where she dry heaved.
“Fiends! Villains! Bullies! I will remember this day!”
“Did it work?” Hunter asked.
“… yes,” Elyndris admitted after a moment's hesitation. “Feat achieved. Vile concoction. Willingly drink a diseased brew. I think there could have been an easier way to do that. And willingly is a stretch.”
“Now we have to wash away the purged sickness.” Anath put her hands on her hips. She could feel the spider mimicking her. “We’re going first, boys! Make sure you stay out.”
The three boys nodded their agreement.
Hunter stoked the fire to the baths, which produced the hearth fire effect. Its range was sufficient to protect the bath and surrounding rooms. While he filled the bath, the girls went to the living quarters Daggat had found. There were several rooms to search through, but they found what they hoped to. Clothes. Some of them deteriorated over time. But they found a large red and orange wool shirt for Anath, along with a pair of brown trousers. Zuss managed to find something that would fit her, but they looked like boys' clothes. She didn’t seem to mind.
Daggat explained how the baths worked. Hunter kindly kept the water filled and heated from the other room. It had been a very long time since Anath’s last proper bath. In the attic, she had to use a sponge.
Daggat and Klaw were, supposedly, guarding them while they bathed. There had been less corpse wood than before, but there was still plenty of danger.
The copper balls with holes in them turned out to be showers, which they used first. The water was hot, but they got used to it. Elyndris slithered in and out of the shower, grumbling.
Then they settled into the tub itself. Dipping a toe in, it was hot but not painful. Zuss pushed her in.
Anath gasped as she splashed into the bath. Zuss was laughing. Anath scowled at her and splashed her. Then, she too settled into the tub. The tub was wide enough for six adults and had a seat that ringed the inside of the bowl. A ladder allowed people in and out, and a plug from below could be pulled to drain the water into a grate. Anath had to sit at the edge of the seat to make room for the spider. Stupid spider. It made it hard to relax.

Zuss was wearing a towel around her head and face.
“Zuss, not that I mind or anything… but why do you cover your face?” Anath asked. Zuss shrugged. Anath let the heat of the bath seep into her. She could practically feel her stress float away. Even the spider legs relaxed and floated in the water.
“Habit. I had to wear bandages for a while. Now it’s just more comfortable. Also, it looks cool.”
“Can I see your face?” Anath asked.
“Anath, it is rude to ask! She is probably horribly scared. Maybe even ugly. You will never see her the same again," Elyndris explained. She was resting on Anath’s shoulder, just barely dipped into the water.
Zuss splashed the worm.
“It’s fine. I guess. But don’t tell the boys.” Zuss hesitated before removing the towel.
She had a cute little nose and a marbled pattern on her skin. Orange and white that swirled around each other subtly. Like the patterns of a flame. Anath gasped. Zuss went to wrap her face.
“That was a mistake; I-” Zuss began before Anath cut her off.
“No! I just didn’t expect you to be so pretty," Zuss scowled at Anath's comment. “I mean… cool?” Zuss barked out a laugh and put down the towel.
“It’s not ugly? The scars..." Zuss whispered. Anath shook her head.
“No, very distinct. And cool.”
“Indeed, Zuss, you have the haunted eyes of a veteran and the complexion of a war goddess. Yours is a face that will be sung about in battle hymns!”
Zuss blushed and splashed at the worm again. Elyndris slipped and fell into the water as Anath laughed.
“Don’t flatter me. Now, Anath. While Daggat is busy reading his imaginary books, we need to work on your level.” Anath perked up.
“Oh! Yes. Okay, um, I don’t know what’s best. Elly?” She looked around for the worm. “Elly!”
Zuss and Anath locked panicked eyes as they came to the same conclusion. Then they both dove into the bath. A moment later, Zuss reappeared with a coughing and sputtering Elyndris.
“I was moments away from selecting a gill biotrait! This is the worst day. The WORST.”
“Don’t be so dramatic, Elly. We were talking about my class.”
“Oh, good. While Daggat can’t interfere. He has a way to get what he wants out of people.”
“That’s the hypnosis. And the practice," Zuss said.
“What classes do you have available?”
Anath listed the classes. She had the same choices that Hunter had, except for a few. The human-only classes, Jack-of-trades and Gestalt, and another class. This one had a rainbow sheen to it.
“That sheen means it is unique to you! That is very rare. Your variance is much more powerful than Daggat's," Elyndris explained. She knew the basics of how classes worked, but not many of the specifics. That was Daggat’s department. But they didn’t need him.
“What is it?” asked Zuss.
Anath sighed. Stupid spider.
“Spider Caller. It says, ‘She who is one with the web. Mother of spiders. Their queen and commander.'"
“Whoa. That sounds pretty fun. I say go for it!” Zuss said.
“No!” Anath declared.
“Why not? It's unique. You should ALWAYS go for the unique!” Elyndris pleaded.
“No!” Anath said again. “I hate spiders.”
“What a waste. You would have an edge over your enemies!”
“Do you want those gills after all? I said no!”
“Alright, alright. It's your decision," Zuss said. “So, what class then?”
“Are we sure I can’t be a mage?” Anath asked, a twinge of hope in her voice.
“Well… we can’t make you choose. You have to. But, is that your calling? Do you know what it takes to cast magic?” Elyndris dipped a wing in the water as she spoke.
“Not really.”
“I don’t know the specifics. Just the general idea. You must construct a mental image in your head. A very complicated one. It can take hours and hours of just sitting there, imagining the one thing. Then, you let it fill with mana. Depending on the shapes, magic happens. That is one spell. Then you have to imagine the shape all over again. It takes an enormous amount of focus.”
Anath groaned at the explanation. Her mother was a mage, and she wanted to do something to remember her. But, focus wasn’t her strongest trait. Anath sighed and pushed the dream off of her mental table. It landed in the same heap where she kept her innocence, purity, and dignity.
“What about craftswomen? I like building things.”
“That is a good one," Elyndris agreed.
“I don’t know. It’s not something we need. But I think I know what suits you.” She smiled at Anath with her sharp, triangular teeth.
“What?” Anath asked.
“Berserker.”
“Ooh… yes. That would suit her well," Elyndris agreed.
“What? Why?” Anath thought of the berserkers in her stories. Large, smelly men with big swords who got angry a lot.
“Anath, you’ve got issues. Serious issues. It’s not normal to get that mad when you fight. You should USE that,” Zuss explained.
Anath felt stunned. What? She didn’t get THAT angry. Well, a bit. Okay, she got pretty mad. But who didn’t get mad when someone tried to kill you?
She thought back to each fight she had been in. Hanz was an accident. Of course, she would get scared and mad. The Cait Sith was chasing her! It was only natural to lash out and attack. Besides, that was the spider.
Then there was the poison. The pain and fury she felt when it hit her. Her battle against Zuss… the corpse woods… the butler and the lady. In each one, she remembered a moment where she saw red and just lashed out, or at least tried to. Swinging and fighting wildly. The lady didn’t even DO anything.
“Huh. You’re right," Anath said in a daze. She looked down at her hands. She wasn’t some angry death machine like everyone keeps saying, right?
“You do have a temper. It’s not as quick as Klaw’s, but it burns much hotter," Elyndris added.
“What about warrior? Or duelist?”
“Sure, you can choose those. But it won’t suit your nature," Elyndris replied.
“But… then I will be a berserker! People will think I am an angry barbarian!”
“So? Who gives a fuck what other people think? You are in a party of monsters. Lean into it.” Zuss lowered herself until just her head was above the water. “Besides, if anyone makes fun of you, I’ll kill them. Slowly.” That was a bit extreme, but Anath smiled.
“Okay!” She dove for Zuss and hugged her. Water splashed out of the tub and Elyndris flapped her wings to stay balanced.
“Hey, stop it! I’m not a hugger," Zuss yelled.
“She keeps doing that. It’s a problem," Elyndris said. Anath laughed.
Then she entered her status void.
“Anathema! Hello, hello! Time to choose a class.” The spider skittered around the screen. Anath gave it one glance and ignored it. “Spider caller, yes? Yes? It is good, very good. Best, even.”
[Class selected: Berserker. Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution increased by three. Intelligence, Will, and Charm decreased by one. Skills acquired: Berserker’s Rage, Great Vitality. Skill Synergy requirements detected. Warrior's Spirit and Berserker’s Rage. Combine into Berserker’s Spirit? Yes/No]
She selected "yes."
[Warrior’s Spirit and Berserker’s Rage combined. Berserker’s Spirit. Once per day, activate Berserker’s Spirit to gain +8 to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution. Effects last while rage persists. While in this state, pain threshold is vastly increased and self-control is reduced.]
Anath read the change, all eight eyes wide. She LOST intelligence?! No one told her that. Great Vitality was useful. She healed twice as fast as usual. Her constitution was five points higher against disease and poison. That stacked with her disease resistance, giving her the same resistance everyone else had. Except for Elyndris, of course.
She explained the changes to her friends. They seemed suitably impressed.
“Now, we need to find something to throw you at!” Zuss said with a smile full of sharp teeth.
