107. Colin

Colin, Kristy, and Jenny hopped in the back of Higgins’ squad car, ready to head out for a supply run.

Anna and Jack were staying back at the house. When Jack stormed out, he quickly ran into a pack of three Changed that attacked him. Colin saved him by locking them and Jack down, then Jack got a front row seat to how Kristy helped ‘cure’ the Changed. After Jack calmed down and apologized, Anna convinced him to help watch over all the cured Changed. They planned to make the other’s experience of waking up a little better than their own.

That was a relief to Colin, since he could see Kristy becoming overloaded with her need to help. She wouldn’t shy away from what needed to be done, but with one less responsibility off of her shoulders, Colin could feel her relaxing a significant amount.

Higgins found a trailer in one of the neighbors garages and hooked it up to the squad car. Now they were driving through the streets of their old neighborhood, on their way to the local Kroger. Their town was too small for a Costco, so Kroger was their best chance at collecting non-perishable food and survival gear.

They drove past Jenny’s school on the way and it was surprisingly in good shape.

“When can I go back to school?” Jenny asked and Colin wasn’t sure what to say.

“We’re on an early summer break for now,” Kristy said and to Colin’s relief, that was good enough for Jenny.

The supply run went without a hitch. They spotted several small packs of Changed ranging from three to seven total. They were a mix of animal and human originated Changed which made Colin strangely feel a sense of hope.

Colin looked back at the trailer full of supplies as they drove back to Anna and Jack at their most recent home base.

“I think I have an idea of how to help more people,” Colin said.

“Oh yeah?” Kristy said with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah,” Colin nodded slowly, “Once we empty this trailer, let’s go on a different kind of supply run.”

“As in, you lock them down and we haul them back?” Higgins asked.

“Exactly,” Colin said as he shifted into a dragonfly, “I’m going to go test my limits of how many I can lock down at once.”

Colin flew out the window of the car and towards the nearest pack of Changed.
