Chapter 21: When The Heroes Are Judged

Arc 2: ??The Light and Shadow Arc??

  The battle was over.

But the city didn’t feel saved.

Smoke still hung in the air as Victor and Leo walked through the ruined outskirts, their silhouettes cutting through the haze. Cracked roads. Burned ground. Shattered buildings in the distance. Sirens wailed—not in celebration, but in panic.

Mr. Stone pushed himself up from the ground, breathing hard. For a moment, he just stared at the two of them.

“I thought… I thought I was done for,” he muttered.

Tom let out a breathless laugh. “Man, you don’t know how good it feels to see you two.”

Jackson grinned, electricity still flickering faintly around his fingers. “Yeah—now that was an entrance.”

Leo didn’t smile. He looked past them, eyes locked on the remnants of the shadow Titans dissolving into nothingness.

“Talk later,” he said. “This isn’t finished yet.”

Selena nodded, threads retracting back around her wrists. “If shadows keep appearing, someone’s behind it.”

Victor’s lips curved slightly. “Then they’ll show themselves. Eventually.”

The eight gathered at the center of the battlefield—exhausted, bruised, but standing.

“Let’s clear the rest,” Sasha said quietly.

  And they did.

By the time they reached the city, the reactions were… divided.

Some people stared at them with awe. Some with relief. Others with confusion—and fear.

Whispers followed them down broken streets.

Those are the ones with magic.

  They fought the monsters.

  Are they dangerous?

Even though the battle had taken place outside the city, the damage was undeniable. Windows shattered. Buildings cracked. Civilians injured. A world that had once been predictable had turned terrifyingly unstable in just a month.

  And then the sirens stopped.

Police vehicles surrounded them. Weapons raised. Orders shouted.

Before anyone could react, cuffs snapped shut.

  They didn’t resist.

  The holding cells were cold.

Daniel sat against the wall, head lowered, breathing slow and shallow. The pain in his gut—healed but not forgotten—throbbed like a warning.

Tom slammed his cuffed hands against the bars. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.”

Jackson scoffed. “We save the city and this is the thanks?”

Noir said nothing, eyes closed, senses stretched outward—listening to the chaos outside.

  Because the city was unraveling.

Magic surged uncontrolled in the streets. Some people laughed as sparks danced across their hands. Others screamed as power lashed out by accident. Arguments turned violent. Fear spread faster than fire.

  Humanity hadn’t lost the war.

But it hadn’t won peace either.

  The courtroom was packed.

Government officials. Military advisors. Media. The President sat at the center, expression unreadable. Armed guards lined the walls.

  Mr. Stone stood alone.

“You arrested the only people who stood between this city and extinction,” he said calmly. “While doing nothing yourselves.”

The judge adjusted his glasses. “They possess abilities far beyond normal humans. How do we know they aren’t a threat?”

Mr. Stone didn’t hesitate. “Because if they were, this city wouldn’t exist anymore.”

The President leaned forward. “Or perhaps eliminating the monsters was the first step. Gain trust. Remove competition.”

Mr. Stone laughed once—short, sharp. “You think this was a conspiracy?”

He gestured broadly. “A college student. A teacher. A scientist. A businesswoman. An astronaut. A boxer. Two young men who barely talk. You truly believe this group planned world domination?”

  Silence.

“Magic exists now,” the judge said carefully. “That alone changes everything.”

“So does responsibility,” Mr. Stone replied. “Magic isn’t evil. Fear is. And right now, fear is killing people.”

He stepped closer. “You’ve built a Magic Academy. You already accepted that this world has changed. Now finish the job.”

The President exhaled slowly. “And your proposal?”

“Release them,” Mr. Stone said. “Train people. Teach control. Prepare for what’s coming.”

  “What’s coming?” the judge asked.

Mr. Stone’s voice dropped. “Something worse than today.”

  Before anyone could respond—

  BOOM.

  The building shook.

  Screams echoed from outside.

A lesser Titan had emerged in the city center.

  Mr. Stone was already moving.

He burst into the street, eyes blazing, gravity bending violently around him.

  “Graviton Collapse.”

The Titan never stood a chance.

  But it was too late.

  Two bodies lay motionless nearby.

  No one spoke.

The decision was made without another word.

  The cuffs came off.

As they stepped outside, Daniel swayed.

“Dan—!” Selena caught him as his knees buckled.

His vision blurred. The world tilted.

  And then—darkness.

  Night fell quietly.

Victor and Leo moved through a forest far from the city, following instincts older than memory. They stopped at a narrow ravine hidden by overgrowth.

  A cave waited beyond it.

From the outside, it looked ordinary.

  Inside—it was ancient.

Stone walls etched with symbols. Time-worn inscriptions glowing faintly.

At the center, a stone platform hovered.

  Upon it floated a katana.

  Victor stepped forward.

“…Ryūsoku,” he murmured. “So you waited.”

The blade hummed softly, as if responding.

Behind him, Leo approached another pedestal.

A pair of gauntlets hovered there—scarred, heavy, familiar.

He placed a hand against them. “Didn’t think we’d need you again.”

  The cave seemed to breathe.

  Somewhere far away, something watched.

  The world had survived.

But it would never be the same again.

  And this time—

Humanity would have to learn how to fight back.
