Ch.7 Skill Check

Back in his inn room, Alex took out the Boss Cores from his Storage pouch. With a sushi platter and a large bottle of soda, he turned on the inn's TV before digging into his dinner. After a few pieces of sushi, he tossed all six Cores into his mouth before washing them down with the soda. "Ugh, why did they have to make it where people have to eat the Cores to get the Traits?"

With a loud groan, Alex softly pressed his forehead against the table. After a few minutes of silence, he took a deep breath before sitting back up with a deep sigh. "Fuck!" Alex took another deep breath to calm himself. "Ok, ok, ok, ok, I can work with this." Grabbing a sushi, he tossed it into his mouth as he tapped the table with his other hand. "While this is bad, it could have been worse. It also could have been better." Alex thought he had hit the jackpot when he first saw the April Fools Cores. "I should have known it was too good to be true."

  -Scree!-

"What do you mean you prefer this?"

  -Scitter Schre Scit!-

"Well, I'd rather not be a delicacy."

  -Scre-

"I'm sorry my Mana was bland, but I'm a Mana Weaver, which, unlike a Mage, can't alter their internal Mana."

  -Scrit-

"Hmm," Alex bit his finger hard enough to draw blood. Alex paused at the pain and ease with which his flesh ripped, "Oh yeah, increased damage taken from non-ice-cream-based attacks. That makes some of my plans unusable now." Watching the skin stitch itself together, he licked the blood off his finger. "Hmm, strawberry with a hint of cherry."

  -Scitter Scree-

"Ok, you made your point, but have you thought about how much harder the Rifts will be because of this? Along with the fact that any Realms or Rifts with vampires are now more dangerous to go to?"

  -Screech!-

He let out a deep sigh. "Yeah, that's my job, not yours. Ugh, I should have ordered some alcohol instead of soda." Finishing his dinner, Alex garbage the trash before jumping into bed. "I still have a schedule to maintain and can't let this mishap ruin that." He murmured to himself before falling asleep. Waking up the next day, Alex ate the provided breakfast before grabbing his bags and heading to the train station. Arriving at a small town 30 minutes later, he headed straight to the nearest forest. After walking through the forest for an hour and a half and delving into a cave for another hour, he finally arrived at a pulsating red Rift embedded in the cave walls. Walking into the Rift, he found himself in what looked like a castle dungeon illuminated by torches with blue flames on the walls. Feeling the wall, Alex noticed the lack of any wetness or plant life.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"Dry, no signs of moss or vines." He took a closer look at the iron bars. "No signs of rust or decay. This could be the Mad Scientists workshop or the Great Count's castle. Just my luck, a coin flip on whether I'm facing vampires or undead monstrosities. On the bright side, because of the barrier in this room, I should be safe until I leave." He sat down on the floor while taking out several Mana potions from his backpack. "I should have brought empty bottles, well, I'll just think of this as giving Silk a treat." Once he emptied the potions, Alex took out a switchblade and cut his wrist. After filling the bottles, he sipped a Health potion to stop the bleeding before letting his regeneration do the rest. "Silk, please start preparing the standard spells." Putting the now blood-filled bottles into his Storage Pouch, Alex got up and started walking towards the dungeon's exit while swirling the Health Potion in his hand.

Arriving at the exit, Alex took a deep breath before passing through the barrier. Shaking away the chill running down his back, he started walking up the stairs. Reaching the top, he opened the wooden door to reveal a long hallway with a red carpet. Glancing out the window only showed dark mist with a vague outline of a crescent moon in the sky. Alex continued swirling the Health potion as he followed the carpet, walking past any rooms he encountered. After a few minutes of walking, he paused as a door in front of him started rattling. 'Silk Boost,' Alex mentally told Silk as he quickly weaved the Icicle Spear spell. Icicle Spear is the counterpart to the Flame Lash and the advanced version of the Freeze spell. It's a simple spell that condenses water in the air into a sharp icicle while using Mana to keep it frozen.

Alex quickly jabbed the icicle, piercing the door at his eye level. Once he no longer heard any noise, he dismissed the spells and opened the door, causing the disintegrating body to fall into the hallway. "Tch, a ghoul—so this is the Great Count's castle. Just my luck to lose the fifty-fifty." He used his foot to sift through the dust-filled clothes left by the ghoul. "Nothing—not even a single fang." Finding nothing in the room where the body came from, Alex kept walking down the hallway. The pattern of walking, killing any monsters that burst from the doors, then searching the rooms, continued for nearly two hours until he finally discovered a staircase leading to the next floor. "Sixteen fangs, three eyeballs, a few empty bottles, silver coins and a small ruby. Below average on what I was hoping for the first floor, but it's not like getting these was that hard." After filling the newly found bottles with blood, Alex put them along with the other loot away before making his way up the stairs. As he walked up the stairs, the steps behind him would quickly disintegrate into nothing, forcing him to continue moving forward.

Looking around the new floor, he saw an identical hallway to the one he had just cleared, including the open rooms with broken doors. "Silk, I need you to weave and maintain the Boost spell."

  -Sree!-

"Yeah, just tell me when I'm running out so I can drink a potion." Alex carefully weaved a different spell as he started walking down the hallway, tensing whenever he passed an unopened door. After a few minutes of walking, he was about to take out a Mana Potion when everything went black. Quickly activating the spell, Alex shoved his flaming hand against his face. Alex struggled to keep the spell going as he endured the searing pain along the cacophony of screeching mixed with his screams. When the darkness started to fade, he dismissed the spell before downing the rest of the Health potion he was holding. Alex fell to the floor as he gasped for air, looking ahead showed a silhouette of black smoke evaporating into thin air, leaving only a kiwi-sized black core. "-Cough- Fuck! That's what fighting a shade is like? I can't believe I'm saying this, by god, do I hope that the boss is a vampire variant instead of a shade."

Getting up on shaking legs, Alex looked down the hallway. "Just as I thought, Arcane Sight is useless for finding shades. I guess it's time for plan B, Silk. Prepare the Flame spell."

  -Scree?-

"Just be ready to cast it at any moment." After refilling his Mana, he took out a Health potion and went down the hallway. While walking, Alex used Flame Lash to slash or Icicle Spear to attack any moving shadows. Most of the time, he would hit nothing, but on the rare occasion he did kill a shade, he would make sure to retrieve the shade's only drop, their cores. Seeing the stairway up ahead, Alex took a swig of a Mana potion before continuing; however, before he could make it that far, his vision rapidly darkened. "Silk cast Falme on me!" Silk did as she was told without hesitation, resulting in Alex's whole body being bathed in fire. With his vision rapidly filling with intense light, he quickly drank the Health potion before having Silk dismiss the spell. Gasping for air, Alex eyed the black mist dissipating around him as he caught the falling core. "Silk, how much Mana did that use?"

  -Scitter-

"Roughly fifty percent less than earlier." He nodded to himself. "It's also several times faster. Okay, from now on, that's what we'll use to handle shades." Reaching the stairway, he refilled his Mana before heading up. This pattern continued for another 18 floors, with Alex fighting increasingly more shades and ghouls on each repetition. The only issue during his climb was when the ghouls would latch onto him to drain his blood. After two more cycles, Alex, in torn clothes and covered in healing bite marks, stood in front of a pair of golden doors. "Ugh, finally made it." He glanced at the healing chunk of flesh that was bitten off his arm. "To think mere ghouls would be this dangerous." Typically, ghouls are easy to deal with, as even if you are caught, they would release you if they suffer any significant damage. But for Alex, no matter how much he attacked the ghoul, they refused to let go once they started draining his blood, even when he set himself on fire. The only thing Alex could do to free himself was to kill the ghoul before it could heal too much health from drinking his blood.

"After this, I need to figure out a way to get some alcohol." After fully healing his wound and refilling his Mana, Alex opened the golden doors, engulfing him in bright light. Opening his eyes, Alex found himself in a large dining room and on the other side of the long, food-filled table was a pretty young lady wearing a maid's uniform. "Ah, it's you," he murmured. 'Silk Boost and prepare the other spells,' he mentally commanded before weaving a spell of his own.

"Hello, honoured guest, I'm happy you made it on time for dinner." The maid said before giving a small curtsy. "Sadly, the count isn't here at the moment, but you're welcome to stay, we'll love to have you for di-." Before she could finish, the maid ducked down as an icicle flew right over her. "Ah, what a rude morsel we ha-" Not letting her finish, Alex put all his power in his legs before kicking the dining room table at the Boss. Rushing in when the Boss's vision was obscured, he pierced an icicle through the table while simultaneously shoulder-bashing it towards the wall. However, before he could slam the Boss against the wall, a hand burst through the table, grabbed his arm and pulled him forward. Alex felt momentarily weightless before slamming into the floor. Looking up, he saw the furious Boss baring her teeth at him.

With a loud growl, the Boss shot a clawed hand towards Alex's face. 'Flame!' He clenched his teeth, enduring the searing pain that soon engulfed him. Ignoring the Boss's screams, Alex slammed an empowered kick at her stomach, launching her back. "-Cough- Enough." Getting up on shaking legs, he glanced at the slowly healing claw marks before gazing forward. Alex focused all his might into his arm and back, his jaw clenched, muscles briefly seizing, before throwing a full-powered Icicle Spear at the boss.

Growling at him, the Boss backhanded the icicle, causing it to crash into a nearby vase. The Boss paused and stared at the shards littering the floor. "Ah, that was one of the count's favourites." Alex took advantage of the brief respite to down a Mana and Health potion. Noticing his actions, the Boss growled before charging at him with bared teeth. Alex threw the empty bottles towards the boss, who slashed them mid-air, causing them to shatter into a cloud of glass shards. Due to the brief moment of blindness, the Boss couldn't react in time before a third bottle smashed into her, soaking her in red liquid. "Do you think small tricks like that would stop me?!" However, before the Boss could continue her charge, she suddenly stopped and started sniffing her soaked clothes. "Wha-what is this?"

Catching an icicle coming flying towards her, the Boss smashed it into pieces before trying to slurp up what little blood she could out of her clothes. Taking out another bottle of blood, Alex charged at the Boss, who at this point was starting to tear off and eat the blood-soaked cloth. The Boss finally noticed Alex, but before she could grab his neck, he crushed the bottle in his hand, splattering both of them with more blood. "Ah~," the Boss moaned, overwhelmed by the sudden assault on her senses. Taking advantage of the moment, Alex grabbed the Boss's face before igniting his hand with a burst of fire while simultaneously piercing her chest with an Icicle Spear. Before he could push the icicle deeper, the Boss grabbed his arm and threw him across the room. Crashing into a cabinet, Alex groaned as shards of glass and porcelain dug into his flesh.

Taking out a Health potion, Alex noticed the lack of any weight on his shoulders. Looking around as he drank the potion, he found his backpack and spare Storage Pouch on the other side of the room. Taking his sights off his bags, he turned his gaze towards the maid, glaring at him as her face rapidly regenerated. "Shit, looks like outlasting the Boss is off the table." Dodging out of the boss's charge, Alex threw the empty bottle, which the Boss caught in mid-air before throwing it back at him. His legs buckled briefly, causing Alex to be too slow to dodge the counterattack. The bottle slammed against his right shoulder, causing it to go momentarily limp, as a clawed hand pierced his other shoulder.

Grabbing onto the Boss's outstretched arm, Alex ignited his whole body again. The Boss screams as she quickly retracts her arm, allowing him to send a punch with all his might at the vampire's head. Ducking underneath the attack, the Boss glided behind Alex, wrapped him in her embrace, and bit down on his neck. 'SILK NOW!' He mentally commanded while trying to ignore the sharp pain in his neck. A large Icicle burst through Alex's back and speared into the Boss's stomach. Wincing at the Boss's screams, Alex felt her embrace weaken enough for him to be able to rapidly turn around, causing the icicle, along with the skin attached to it, to rip off his body. Gathering power into his arms, he punched the dissipating icicle with all his might, stabilizing and pushing it further into the vampire.

As the Boss staggered back, Alex sent a powerful kick at the icicle, piercing it with the vampire into the wall. Weaving another Icicle Spear, he speared it through the Boss, pinning her shoulder to the wall before doing it again to her other shoulder. With the Boss struggling to free herself, Alex weaved a Flame Lash. However, before he could slash at her neck, she raised both her hands in surrender and shouted at him.

"Wait! You don't have to kill me." She pleaded. "I-I-I could be your maid! I have years of experience, and if that doesn't suit your tastes, I can be your bodyguard!"

"Sorry, Alice, but a reflection can't survive outside a Rift."

"Wait, how do you kno-" Before she could finish, Alex decapitated her in one swift lash. Her head and body quickly turn to dust as they fall limp onto the floor.

"Even if you could survive, having you with me would make the meeting with the real Alice very awkward." Shifting through the ash, he grabbed what he was looking for. "Why can't all monsters turn to dust after they die like vampiric variants?" Retrieving his bags, Alex searched the room for what valuables he could salvage before leaving.
