Chapter 64: A spy who got a system. -

  --

The sealed space was dark and vast, lit only by the faint glow of chakra-inscribed characters floating in mid-air.

Kushina Uzumaki traced another word with her fingertip, the chakra flowing smoothly from her control. In the massive cage beyond, two enormous eyes tracked her movements with unwavering focus.

The Nine-Tails had been stubborn at first. Why should I watch what this human writes? I'm the strongest tailed beast. I have dignity.

But loneliness was a powerful thing.

After months of Kushina's persistent visits, the Nine-Tails had finally—finally—admitted that watching her lessons was... interesting. Not that it would ever say so directly.

After a year of this strange companionship, the fox had grudgingly accepted her. She'd earned it through sheer determination, if nothing else.

"Alright, big guy, that's all for today," Kushina said, her consciousness already withdrawing from the seal. "I need to get the door."

"Wait!" the Nine-Tails protested, its massive form shifting irritably. "Damn it! I hate nothing more than missing the next chapter!"

Kushina emerged from her meditative state just as someone knocked. She opened the door to find Tsunade and Hanekawa on the threshold, both looking slightly amused at her surprised expression.

  "Come in, come in!"

"Where's Minato?" Tsunade asked, glancing around the modest home.

"On a mission," Kushina explained cheerfully. "Ever since he mastered the Flying Thunder God Technique, the Hokage's been working him to death."

"That technique certainly is convenient," Tsunade mused, then tilted her head curiously. "How's the Nine-Tails treating you these days?"

"Oh, we're best friends now!" Kushina beamed. "It's not scary at all—just like having a big dog!"

  Tsunade's expression froze.

A dog? No one in the history of the Leaf Village had ever compared the Nine-Tailed Fox to a dog. Even the First Hokage had deemed it too dangerous to exist freely.

The sealed space suddenly erupted with a massive chakra surge.

Kushina's form blazed with crimson energy, two tails materializing and lashing around her in agitation.

"What happened?" Tsunade's hands clenched, her tone shifting to combat readiness.

"Oh, nothing!" Kushina waved dismissively, already retracting her tails. "I said it looked like a dog, and it got offended. It's just... protesting."

Tsunade said nothing. Some things defied explanation.

"Hanekawa, shouldn't you be at the academy right now?" Kushina asked once she'd fully calmed down, her two tails now tucked neatly against her back. She'd gotten quite good at controlling them—transforming into a half-beast form at will.

"The old man was being too verbose," Tsunade answered with a knowing smile. "This one decided he had better things to do."

Hanekawa didn't bother denying it. Accurate assessment.

Kushina wasn't the refined, delicate girl most people assumed. She was violent, impulsive, and stubborn—much like Tsunade, actually. Hanekawa just kept that observation to himself around them.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

"It's still early for dinner," Tsunade said, her eyes gleaming with unmistakable intent. "Cards?"

  Hanekawa sighed. Of course.

"Oh!" Kushina's eyes suddenly widened. "The Nine-Tails wants to play too!"

  Tsunade blinked. "It does?"

"Sure," she said with a shrug. "Why not?"

"But it's sealed," Tsunade pointed out logically. "How would it even—"

Two tails emerged from Kushina's back, and under the Nine-Tails' control, they formed ten distinct fingers.

Tsunade's grin was predatory. "I've never lost to a tailed beast before. Let's see what happens."

Three people and one very indignant fox gathered around the table.

"What game?" Kushina asked, shuffling cards with practiced ease.

"I know one," Hanekawa offered. "It's called... Fighting Ghost Cards."

He'd almost said "Fighting Landlord," but the translation would've been a nightmare. This was simpler.

As he explained the rules—the hierarchy of cards, the roles of landlord and peasants, the strategy involved—Kushina listened intently.

"Wait, doesn't this need four players?" she asked when he finished.

"I'm sitting this one out," Hanekawa said.

"Smart," Kushina nodded approvingly. "Kids shouldn't gamble anyway."

"Sit next to me," Tsunade commanded suddenly.

Hanekawa understood immediately. Without him in the game, Tsunade couldn't cheat off his luck. But with him beside her, feeding her his presence? She'd have every advantage.

He moved closer, settling against her side. Even through their clothes, he could feel the warmth of her skin, the softness of her thigh against his.

"You two have quite the relationship," Kushina observed, not unkindly.

  The game began.

"Stop hitting me, you stupid fox! We're on the same team!"

  "You play like a peasant!"

"Shut up and play your cards!"

Kushina's frustrated voice dominated the afternoon as the Nine-Tails proved to be exactly as competent at strategy as one might expect from a legendary beast with zero card experience. Tsunade's luck, neutralized by Hanekawa's presence, combined with the Nine-Tails' terrible plays to create a perfect storm of losses.

Hanekawa poured Kushina a cup of coffee without being asked.

She drained it in one gulp. "That stupid fox is nothing special!"

The two tails drooped immediately, looking utterly defeated.

Hanekawa bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.

In the original timeline, after the Nine-Tails bonded more closely with Naruto, its true personality had emerged—tsundere, stubborn, but ultimately not evil. Like a husky with godlike power, really.

[E-Rank Talent Entry: Seal Mastery - Effect upgraded]

[Seal-making speed increased by 30% from baseline]

Hanekawa's eyebrows rose slightly. The upgrade triggered now? Probably from the Nine-Tails' presence, or maybe from watching Kushina work with seals all year. Either way, it was a solid improvement. Hand seal speed was crucial for any ninja worth their salt.

After lunch, Hanekawa and Tsunade left Kushina's house.

"I want to learn the Body Flicker Technique this afternoon," Hanekawa said as they walked.

The Body Flicker was straightforward—he'd held off learning it while waiting for his "Medical Chunin" entry to complete. Now that it was done, he just needed the teleportation technique to synthesize "Swift as the Wind," which would then combine with his other entries to create the B-Rank "Unmatched Healing."

"Fine," Tsunade agreed, though he caught the slight disappointment in her tone. She'd been planning to hit the casinos this afternoon. "We'll train at home instead."

They didn't enter the house when they arrived. Instead, Tsunade led him to the training yard and began explaining the Body Flicker Technique.

"It's simple in concept," she said, settling onto a bench. "You move fast. That's it."

"That's... not very detailed," Hanekawa pointed out.

"Because it isn't complicated," Tsunade shrugged. "There are different versions, though. The basic D-Rank version is pure speed. Then you get variants that incorporate elemental chakra—Water Style, Mist Style, Lightning Style. Those are higher ranked."

  "And the highest level?"

"Space-time ninjutsu. Like the Flying Thunder God Technique." She gestured for him to stand. "What you're learning is the simplest version. Pure speed, pure chakra control. Ready?"

  Hanekawa nodded, taking his stance.

Tsunade's eyes gleamed. "Then let's begin."
