Interlude

Dawn crept into Aetheria like a whisper, the first light gently prying open the darkness that blanketed the slums. Nara stepped out of her small, modest home, the cool air brushing against her pale skin, sending a chill through her slim frame.

She wore a simple linen dress, the fabric worn but clean, befitting her position as a maid. Her long, dark hair was tied back into a loose braid, strands falling loose around her face, which was youthful but marked by a certain maturity. Her eyes, sharp and observant, scanned the street outside her home, waiting for her younger sister.

Nara's breath fogged in the chilly morning air as she stood on the uneven cobblestones of the slum's narrow street. The neighborhood was waking up around her, with the sounds of roosters crowing, doors creaking open, and sleepy murmurs rising from the clustered houses that seemed to lean on each other for support. The scent of wood smoke and damp earth filled her nostrils.

She glanced down at the piece of paper in her hand, her fingers clutching it tightly. The note had been passed to her in secrecy the night before, Nara knew what this meant for Elara, the princess she served. It was news she had to deliver as quickly as possible.

"Nima!" Nara called softly, turning her head towards the door. Her sister emerged a moment later, yawning, her eyes still heavy with sleep. At seventeen, Nima was a year younger than Nara, with the same fair skin and dark hair. Dressed in a similar maid's uniform, she looked more like Nara's twin than her younger sister.

Her movements were slower, more languid than Nara's, but there was a sharp intelligence in her eyes that mirrored her sister’s.

"I'm here, I'm here," Nima muttered, stifling a yawn as she rubbed her eyes. "You always wake me up too early."

A rare crease formed on Nara's otherwise calm brow. "If you keep this up, the palace will spoil you into thinking you're royalty... Move, we can't be late today."

Nima's lips curled into a lazy smirk, eyes half-lidded with sleep. "Perhaps I was meant to be a princess?" she said, the words dripping with mock indifference.

Nara's eyes narrowed, but the hint of a smile betrayed her. "Well, Your Highness, unless you plan on ruling the kitchen, you’d better pick up the pace."

Together, they set off through the narrow, winding paths of the slums. The ground was muddy from a recent rain, and they had to watch their step to avoid the deeper puddles. Their bare feet were accustomed to the rough terrain, but the journey was always a test of balance and patience.

As they moved, they passed small clusters of children playing in the dirt, old women selling hot tea from steaming kettles, and men loading carts with goods to take to the market. The slums were alive with activity, despite the hour, the air filled with a hum of conversations and the occasional bark of a dog.

Just as they neared the edge of the slums, a distant rumble caught Nara's attention. She turned her head sharply, her eyes widening as she saw the source of the commotion. The Royal Cavalcade of the King of Kerios was entering the city through the grand gates of Aetheria.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

A procession of horse-drawn carriages and soldiers in polished armor paraded down the main road, their black banners featuring a Pheonix over a sun, fluttering in the dawn light. The sight was awe-inspiring, a rare display of Keriosi banners inside the Kingdom of Aetheria that only had royal blue banners with a golden crystal embroidered.

The procession was a spectacle to behold, the King's carriage, made of dark, rich wood with gold accents, was surrounded by guards on horseback, their armor glinting in the morning sun. Behind them, a line of more carriages followed, filled with nobles and servants from Kerios. The streets were filled with onlookers, their faces alight with curiosity and excitement, murmuring among themselves.

Every time King Adir of Kerios arrived in Aetheria, the people watched in awe, their gaze filled with wonder and disbelief. Despite the fact that he had visited before, there was still something surreal about his presence. For generations, Kerios had stood as Aetheria's opposition, an enemy kingdom, locked in tension and rivalry. The mere idea of a Keriosi King setting foot on Aetherian soil was once unthinkable.

It was only through the tireless efforts recently, that a fragile truce had been forged, with King Eldrion and King Adir's father coming to an agreement that quelled the longstanding hostilities. The peace was solidified when Eldrion took Adir’s sister, Mara, as his queen, a political union that had further woven their fates together. And now, in their reigns, the two nations found prosperity through mutually beneficial trade agreements.

Yet despite all this, the people of Aetheria couldn’t help but marvel at the unlikely alliance. The sight of King Adir, standing at the gates of Aetheria, still carried the weight of history and the impossible nature of what had been achieved between their kingdoms. The streets lined with people craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

"Nima, look!" Nara yelled, pulling her sister to a halt.

"Wow... they’re already here, lets hurry!" Nima’s eyes widened, her sleepiness forgotten.

They weaved through the crowd, their pace quickening as they neared the palace gates. The path from the slums to the palace was not a long one, but with the crowd drawn by the royal arrival, it felt like navigating a river of bodies. Nara kept a firm grip on Nima's hand, determined to push through the throng.

As they finally reached the palace gates, Nara could feel her heart pounding. The grand structure loomed over them, its high walls and tall towers casting long shadows across the courtyard. She flashed a quick, familiar nod to the gatekeepers, who recognized the two sisters and allowed them through without question.

Once inside the palace grounds, Nara turned to Nima, "Go, tell Advisor Kharis and royal servants that the King of Kerios has arrived. They need to be ready to welcome him."

Nima nodded, understanding the urgency, and dashed off toward the servant quarters. Nara watched her go for a moment before turning her attention back to the palace's main building. She took a deep breath, steadying herself. She needed to find Princess Elara and deliver the news about her uncle’s arrival, but more importantly, the letter she had been given by Arion’s young friend Kony the previous night.

She made her way through the familiar corridors of the palace, Nara’s footsteps echoed softly against the marble floors as she approached the princess’ chambers. The palace was quiet in the early morning light, a stark contrast to the chaos outside.

Reaching Elara’s door, Nara paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts. Then she knocked softly, her knuckles rapping against the heavy wooden door. "Princess Elara," she called out gently, her voice carrying a note of urgency. "It’s Nara. I have important news."

The door creaked open, and Nara stepped inside, ready to deliver the message that would undoubtedly set the day into motion.
