Chapter 20: Guardian (Part.2)

As a man of order, both in my past life and now, I have always believed that life is better when it follows a plan. Letting things simply happen, drifting without control, that's for fools and the desperate. There's nothing I despise more than leaving my fate to the waves, tossed about with no say in where I'll end up.

Even as a Dungeon Master, nothing has changed and as such I run my domain with structure like a well-oiled machine would machine. At first, I was reluctant to spend my initial 90 GP, the amount I was "born" with. But over time, I came to see G.P. for what it truly is: an asset, a form of currency. A vague one, sure, but a currency nonetheless, one I could invest. And as a Dungeon Master, the most natural investment I could make to get more G.P in return was to acquire spawns and scatter them throughout my domain. Occasionally, expand my territory, ensuring my spawns level up to match the strength of invading forces. That’s how I figured G.P. should be spent in harvesting as much G.P. as possible.

I don’t know how much is expected of me by Mighty K.R.U.L., but if my purpose is to harvest G.P as I had thus far, then I will harvest and invest endlessly.

But… just because I reached that conclusion doesn’t mean I spend every single point.

Perhaps it’s a bad habit from my old world, but I firmly believe that, like money, G.P. should always be kept within reach.

  That’s why I devised a 76-24% ratio.

Seventy-six percent of my available G.P. is dedicated to dungeon upkeep, whether that means spawns acquisitions or domain arrangements. The remaining twenty-four percent? It stays with me. Untouched. Reserved.

  Why those exact numbers?

Let's pretend thatI have no deep, logical reasoning. Let's say that I simply liked them. So much so that I applied the same ratio when dividing G.P. between my regular spawns and my unique domain guardians.

And, of course, it’s obvious which got the bigger portion… and which got the smaller one.

One of the conditions for the acquisition of a dungeon guardian is that the dungeon has to have a higher G.P than any of the available spawn. So, here it was, my strongest spawn and my greatest investment to this day.

  ____________________________

It was unfortunate that most of my forces had been defeated by a lone, multi-classed invader. Forced to rely on my final line of defense, my Domain Guardian, I should have felt nothing but concern. And yet, I couldn’t deny a certain satisfaction.

This invader was the first to make it this far since I had acquired my Dungeon Guardian. In fact, no one had ever done so from the very beginning. So, yes, I was eager, eager to finally put it to the test.

But at the same time, my forces were gone. Every last one of my spawns had been defeated. Now, it all rested on my Dungeon Guardian. If it failed… I wasn’t entirely sure what would happen to me. But I had a strong suspicion that it would affect that one skill of his, Champion, and, more importantly, it could cost me the G.P. I had worked so painstakingly to earn.

So, no, I wasn’t pulling any punches.

Well… I say that, but the moment I had to choose between the two available protocols, I hesitated. Both offered undeniable benefits, but each came with its own drawbacks. In the end, I decided to proceed without either, for now.

After all, from what I could tell, I could activate one even mid-battle. Best to test the waters first.
