Rewards

Miles sat on the floor, breathing heavily. He'd already barricaded the door with whatever was on the rooftop, be it a rusted metal sheets, a broken HVAC unit, and stacks of weathered wooden crates. It was all piled high against the heavy steel slab.

Each thud from the other side of the door sent tremors through the metal door.

The Cursed were pushing harder now, their snarls growing more frantic as they caught his scent on the cool night air.

He straightened his shoulders, his hands steady as he checked the remaining magazine round for the M17, as only few dozen rounds are left.

His tactical knife was secure at his hip, its weight familiar and reassuring.

Through a small gap in the crates, he could see a flash of milky eyes and jagged teeth as something pressed against the other side of the door. The steel slab bowed inward with a low groan, and a thin crack snaked across its surface.

After checking the remaining magazine, Miles immediately took a look at the notification that kept buzzing during his run.

He pulled out his phone, the screen was still bright as before as it displayed the game that change his life and help him survive till now.

Even though, the mystery of this app is still unknown. But who cares? It was helping him, so who would decline such a thing?

A cascade of notifications flooded the screen, each one more urgent than the last.

  [Warning - 8x Cursed on the staircase. 3 - 5 meters away.]

  [5x Cursed Kill - Detected.]

  [Tutorial Mission 3: Completed]

[Congratulation, You completed Tutorial Mission 3.]

[You had received Tutorial Gift Box (Version 2)]

"Huh??" Miles stared at the reward with a confuse expression. "Gift Box? Could this app only give Gift box?"

But, before he could process and think about it more deeply. He saw the other similar notification.

[(Level 2) Cursed Kill - Detected.]

  [Tutorial Mission 5: Completed]

[Congratulation, You completed Tutorial Mission 5.]

[You had received Tutorial Gift Box (Version 4)]

"Gift Box Version 2 and 4?" Miles muttered, shaking his head as he swiped through the notifications.

"What's with this rewards, Version 2 and 4? Hah, what's for Mission 4. Version 3? Haha, well not like I can complain. Those rewards helps me survive until now."

Miles shook his head, completely putting this absurd reward system out of his mind.

He tapped "Open" on both gift boxes one after the other. The screen flashed bright, and two sets of items materialized around him in soft waves of light:

[Tutorial Gift Box (Version 2) Opened!]

[Item Received: Tactical Helmet (Ballistic Grade) Lightweight Tactical Vest (Ballistic Grade) Pistol Suppressor, 2 x Additional 21-round M17 Extended Magazines.]

The helmet settled gently on his head, the weight balanced perfectly, and the vest clipped into place across his chest-both feeling sturdy yet light enough to not slow him down. The extended magazines clattered into his vest pouches, each one loaded and ready to go.

Miles blinked in surprise as he realized the suppressor had somehow attached itself to his M17,f itting perfectly onto the barrel as if it had been made for it, with no tools or adjustments needed. The metal seemed to meld seamlessly with the rifle, as if they'd always been one piece.

"Well... that's new," he breathed, shouldering the weapon to test its balance. It felt almost exactly the same as before-no extra weight or bulk to throw off his aim. He pulled the trigger gently (safety still engaged) and was struck by how little sound the trigger pull made now, the usual click muffled almost completely.

"Ballistic gear, a suppressor and more ammo?" Miles breathed, running a hand over the helmet's smooth surface. "Okay, Version 2 is definitely a step up from the knife I got before."

He quickly adjusted the gear, making sure everything was secure and wouldn't shift during movement. As he buckled the vest's last strap, his phone lit up again with the second gift box.

[Tutorial Gift Box (Version 4) Opened!]

[Item Received: Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle (Military Grade - Gen 3) Modular Handgun Holster and 5x Additional 21-round M17 Extended Magazine.]

Miles' eyes widened as the extra magazines clattered into his vest's pouches-five more extended ones on top of the two.

By now the magazine, he had reached nearly two hundred rounds, which means he had atleast 200 rounds of ammo at his disposal.

He ran his fingers over the modular holster, which clicked firmly into place on his vest's MOLLE webbing, and adjusted the night vision goggles until they sat perfectly on his helmet.

His look is exactly like those military, he saw on the video.

"Does this app making me a soldier? It keeps giving me military grade gears," Miles muttered, catching his reflection in a jagged piece of metal from the broken HVAC unit.

The tactical helmet cast a shadow over his eyes, and the vest made his shoulders look broader-he barely recognized himself.

He toggled the night vision goggles on, and the rooftop transformed into a vivid green landscape.

The rampage on the other side, clearly stopped already. Although, a low growl came from time to time.

He could faintly see a shadow on the other side of the door.
