Chapter 23 — Hunter and Prey

The run through the narrow alley continued.

Kaelion led the way. Lucas followed right behind him. Ethan and Aria ran in the rear, keeping watch behind them.

The dragging sounds coming from behind hadn’t stopped.

  scrrr…

  scrrr…

  Lucas spoke between heavy breaths.

  “These things… don’t give up!”

  Kaelion glanced back briefly.

The pack of Crawlers was still chasing them. They were turning corners, crashing into walls as they dragged themselves forward.

  “Keep moving,” Kaelion said.

“If we stop, they’ll catch us.”

  Ethan clenched his teeth.

“Stopping isn’t exactly an option anyway.”

  The group turned another corner.

  Then another.

Kaelion’s eyes scanned the surroundings rapidly.

He was looking for an escape route.

But then a new smell reached his nose.

  This scent was different.

  Heavier.

  Wilder.

  Kaelion suddenly slowed down.

  Lucas almost ran into him.

  “What happened?!”

  Kaelion lifted his head.

He looked down the alley ahead.

  Then spoke quietly.

  “…Stop.”

  Ethan immediately raised his axe.

  “What is it?”

  Aria also readied her knife.

  Kaelion didn’t answer.

  He simply pointed forward.

At the end of the alley, there was a shadow.

  A large shadow.

  Then the shadow moved.

  Lucas’s eyes widened.

  “Damn…”

The creature slowly stepped into the light.

  It was tall.

  At least two meters.

  A muscular body.

  Covered in gray fur.

Its yellow eyes glowed in the darkness.

Long claws scraped against the asphalt.

  Lucas whispered,

  “…a wolf.”

  Kaelion shook his head slightly.

  “No.”

  “That’s not a wolf.”

  The creature lifted its head.

  It sniffed the air.

Then its eyes locked directly onto the group.

A system message appeared in Kaelion’s vision.

  Enemy Identified

  Werewolf

  Rank: E

  Level: 8

  Kaelion’s heart skipped a beat.

  E Rank.

Stronger than anything they had faced so far.

  Lucas spoke slowly.

  “Please don’t tell me…”

  “…we’re fighting that.”

  Kaelion shook his head.

  “No.”

Lucas let out a relieved breath.

  “Good.”

After a brief pause, Kaelion added,

  “For now.”

At that moment the dragging sounds behind them grew louder again.

The Crawler pack was turning the corner.

  Aria glanced behind them.

  “They’re coming.”

  Ethan clenched his jaw.

  “Perfect.”

  “Werewolf in front, swarm behind.”

Lucas let out a dry laugh.

“This day just keeps getting better.”

The Werewolf took a step forward.

  Then another.

  It walked slowly.

But its eyes never left the group.

  Kaelion made a quick decision.

“We go into that building on the right.”

  Lucas looked immediately.

  There was a half-open door.

It looked like an old storage building.

  Ethan pushed the door open.

  It creaked loudly.

  “Inside!”

The group rushed into the building.

  Ethan slammed the door shut.

  The inside was dark.

Old shelves and empty boxes filled the space.

  Lucas leaned against the wall.

  “This is a temporary solution.”

  Kaelion nodded.

  “I know.”

  Aria looked out the window.

  “The Crawlers are coming.”

At that moment a howl echoed outside.

  AOOOOOO!

  Lucas flinched.

  “…and so did he.”

When they looked through the window, they saw the Werewolf entering the alley.

  But something interesting happened.

The Crawler swarm began moving toward the werewolf.

  The Werewolf growled.

  One Crawler leapt at it.

  The Werewolf swung its claw.

The Crawler was torn in half.

  Lucas’s eyes widened.

  “Whoa…”

  Ethan stared in surprise.

“So they fight each other too.”

The Werewolf tore apart another Crawler.

  But the swarm was large.

  Crawlers attacked from every direction.

  Aria spoke quietly.

  “This might be our chance.”

  Kaelion narrowed his eyes.

  The Werewolf was incredibly powerful.

But the swarm was slowing it down.

  Kaelion spoke slowly.

  “We make a plan.”

  Lucas looked at him.

  “A plan?”

  Kaelion nodded.

  “Yes.”

  Ethan raised his axe.

  “What kind of plan?”

  Kaelion looked out the window.

Outside, Crawlers and the Werewolf were fighting to the death.

  Then he spoke calmly.

“We let them weaken each other.”

  Lucas raised an eyebrow.

  “…and then?”

Kaelion tightened his grip on his knife.

  “Then…”

  “…we finish what’s left.”
