Chap 19 - Awakening Meikai

The moment Kaizo’s voice faded, silence entered the entire clearing.

Yumi’s heartbeat was the loudest thing in the world. The blindfold pressed softly against her eyes, shutting out every trace of light. She stood still, hands slightly raised, uncertain where the first strike would come from.

A breeze brushed her cheek — from her left side.

  Yumi (thinking): That’s him.

She pivoted, but nothing was there. Just the whisper of leaves as they scattered in the wind.

Then — a faint step. To her right, deliberate but very light; extremely difficult to pick up with normal ears.

Yumi turned again, swinging her arm through empty air.

Kaizo (from somewhere behind her): “What are you doing? You keep reacting to the nearest sound, not me. Don’t chase the noise — feel the space shifting every time I step somewhere.”

Yumi (frustrated): “Easier said than done!”

She inhaled deeply. The scent of bark, dew, and faint movement from Kaizo’s movements.

Her ears twitched — the forest wasn’t quiet anymore. Every bird, every insect, every rustle became separated as her ears began to distinguish each noise separately.

Kaizo’s next movement was slower, almost like he was teasing her. A few careless steps through the underbrush — obviously on purpose.

Yumi (thinking): “He’s letting me catch him…”

She adjusted her stance, grounding her heels in the bark mat. The air pressure shifted — a subtle pull where Kaizo moved. She began to sense his approach not through hearing alone, but through the small tremors in the ground, the displacement in the wind.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Kaizo (quietly circling her): “I see your ears are working well, keep it up…”

Yumi tilted her head. His footsteps suddenly went silent — unnervingly so. He’d erased all deliberate cues. Even his breathing vanished into the background.

For several moments, there was nothing.

  Then — a tiny click.

She felt some odd sensation on the back of her neck, as if someone was going to touch the hairs that were rising.

Yumi spun instinctively, her hand snapping up — catching something small and warm.

When the world stilled again, she realized she was holding Kaizo’s index finger — frozen an inch before it could tap the back of her neck.

  Kaizo (half-smiling, stunned): “Fucking hell…”

Yumi (lifting her blindfold, blinking up at him): “Did I… actually do it?”

Kaizo (still staring at his trapped finger): “You didn’t just do it — you predicted it. I masked every sound, every trace of my presense… and you still caught me.

Yumi (blushing slightly, letting go): I-I just… felt the weird sensation in my neck. It was like my body told me you were there.

Kaizo (grinning, rubbing his hand): “Not to mention, that’s some crazy ass reaction timing. Yumi, if you start learning at this rate, you’re going to make me look bad.”

Infinity (stretching from the hammock): “Prodigy” alert.”

Yumi (laughing nervously, brushing her hair back): “I’m not a prodigy… just lucky.”

Kaizo (smirking, tone soft but proud): “I don't think what you just did is considered luck.”

He stood, brushing the bark dust from his hoodie.

Kaizo: “You’ve got potential, Yumi. Real potential. Meikai isn’t supposed to click this fast — most people take days just to feel the sensation.”

Yumi (smiling, cheeks pink): “Then maybe I’m learning from the right person.”

Kaizo (mock-scoffing, turning away): “Don’t flatter me yet. We’re just getting started. Next, we’ll see how you handle fighting without hearing.”

Yumi (groaning): “You’re serious, aren’t you?”

Kaizo (walking off, raising a hand): “Uh-huh.”

Infinity (calling after him): “She's either going to master enlightenment… or die of insanity.”
