Chapter 9: The Scavenger’s Signal

  Chapter 9: The Scavenger’s Signal

The night passed uneventfully, the calm punctuated only by the distant howls of mutated creatures and the occasional tremor beneath their feet. Adrian and Mike had worked tirelessly to secure the apartment complex, reinforcing the lower floors and setting traps around the perimeter. They had no illusions about their safety, but they were prepared. For now, the building was theirs.

Adrian sat by the window in the dim light of a battery-powered lantern, the soft hum of the Genesis Ring beside him. He was deep in thought, running through a mental checklist of everything they had accomplished so far. The Mandaue Node was secure for now, and their beachhead was established. But he knew better than to relax.

The System was constantly recalibrating. Always shifting. Always testing.

Mike, on the other hand, had spent the better part of the night organizing their supplies. His body still ached from the battle with the Typhon-Aswang Hive, but he was strong. He had learned a lot in a short amount of time—how to tap into the energy, how to use it to enhance his strength, how to fight smarter. Adrian had been right: it wasn’t just about brawn. It was about adapting to the System’s rules and bending them to their advantage.

But something in Adrian’s gut told him that the System wasn’t going to let them get comfortable. There was always more to come. There was always another challenge waiting just around the corner.

Suddenly, the quiet was broken by a faint, unfamiliar static sound—a distortion that seemed to come from the air itself. Adrian’s eyes narrowed. He’d heard this before, but it had been a long time.

“Mike, stay alert,” Adrian said, his voice low but firm.

Mike looked up, sensing the change in Adrian’s tone. “What is it?”

“I’m not sure,” Adrian replied, pulling up the Genesis Ring’s interface. He could feel the energy pulse around him, but there was something off about it. “It’s coming through the broadcast channel. Someone’s trying to hack into the local network.”

Mike stepped closer, peering over Adrian’s shoulder. “Can you trace it?”

This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Adrian’s fingers danced over the controls, and a series of cryptic symbols flashed across the screen. It didn’t take long for him to narrow down the source of the signal.

“This is... unexpected,” Adrian muttered. “I’ve got a signal. A distress call. It’s coming from the South District, near the Mactan Channel.”

Mike frowned. “A distress call? Someone’s alive out there?”

Adrian nodded. “But it’s not just anyone. I recognize the signature.” His expression shifted, the corner of his mouth lifting in a knowing smirk. “It’s Sarah Jenkins.”

  Mike looked puzzled. “Who?”

Adrian’s eyes flicked up to meet Mike’s. “Sarah Jenkins. A scavenger. She’s been on my radar for a while now. She’s resourceful, smart, and... a hacker.”

Mike raised an eyebrow. “A hacker? How does that help us?”

Adrian’s gaze turned distant. “She’s the reason I know so much about the System. She’s one of the few people who can actually manipulate the UI, access hidden layers of information, and bypass security protocols. She’s been working in the shadows for a long time, trying to stay under the radar. But now... now she’s reaching out.”

Adrian paused for a moment, contemplating the implications. He had kept an eye on Sarah’s progress since the early days of the System’s descent. She was a valuable asset, one who could help them understand the inner workings of the System, and perhaps even turn it to their advantage. But Adrian had never reached out to her directly. He had been waiting, observing, trying to figure out if she could be trusted.

Now, with the message coming through, he knew they couldn’t afford to ignore it.

“Should we go after her?” Mike asked, sensing the tension in Adrian’s voice.

Adrian nodded slowly. “We don’t have a choice. Sarah’s the key to understanding the next phase of this apocalypse. If she’s reaching out, it means she’s in trouble, and we need to get to her before it’s too late.”

Mike clenched his fists. “So, we’re going into the South District? The Mactan Channel is a mess, and it’s crawling with Boiler-Crabs and other monsters. It’s not exactly a friendly place.”

Adrian met Mike’s gaze with unwavering resolve. “It’s a risk we have to take. Sarah’s the best chance we have at figuring out what the System wants from us. And if we can get to her, we might just be able to turn the tide.”

Mike grinned. “Alright. Let’s do it. We’ll need to move fast.”

Adrian activated the Genesis Ring, pulling up a map of the area. The Mactan Channel was notorious for being a dangerous region, the waters boiling with toxic steam and crawling with mutated creatures—Boiler-Crabs, in particular. The terrain was unstable, and the air was thick with corrosive fog. But Sarah’s signal was clear. She was close. Very close.

“Get your gear,” Adrian said, his voice calm but filled with urgency. “We leave in five minutes.”

Mike didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his pack, double-checking the supplies: Mana Crystals, health potions, Kinetic Boosters, and a few weapons they had scavenged along the way. They were ready, but Adrian knew this was going to be a difficult journey.

As they prepared to leave the safety of their newly established beachhead, Adrian couldn’t shake the feeling that this mission was more than just a rescue operation. Sarah Jenkins was more than a scavenger. She was the key to unlocking the next stage of their survival, and Adrian was willing to risk everything to bring her into their fold.

The two of them moved quickly through the apartment building, securing the last of their equipment. Adrian sent one last look at their outpost before heading out the door. The air felt thick with impending danger, and the distant sounds of monsters creeping through the city only added to the tension.

But Adrian wasn’t worried. They had a mission. And with Mike by his side, they were ready for whatever the System had in store.

As they exited the building and made their way toward the Mactan Bridge, Adrian’s mind focused solely on the task at hand. They were going to find Sarah, and they were going to survive this.

But what they would uncover when they reached her was anyone’s guess.
