Chapter 18: Radiance Weaver
The Mandaue District Hospital was finally cleared of the Spore-Spitter infection, but the aftermath weighed heavily on Adrian and his team. The battle had been hard-fought, and though they had managed to stop the plague from spreading further, the energy in the air was still thick with instability. Adrian knew that the situation wasn’t over; they had merely put a temporary halt to the chaos that had already begun to consume the city.
As they made their way back through the hospital’s shattered halls, the silence was almost oppressive. The faint hum of machines in the background was a constant reminder of the energy grid that powered the hospital, but it was the sense of uncertainty hanging in the air that felt most unsettling. They had fought to restore balance, but that was only one piece of the puzzle.
Eva, though exhausted from her efforts, moved with purpose, her mind already on the next step. She had been their healer, their light in the darkness, but even she seemed to be struggling to regain her strength. Adrian had seen her use her Pure Radiation abilities before, but seeing her burn away the Aswang mutations had been something else entirely. There was an overwhelming power inside her, and she was still learning to control it.
Eva slowed as they reached the hospital’s operating room, where they had initially fought off the infected. She hesitated, staring at the cracked glass doors that led into the sterile, now-empty room. The last of the Spore-Spitters had been neutralized, but the memories of what had happened here lingered.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this,” Eva said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. Her gaze was distant, lost in thought. “Every time I use my powers, I’m afraid of what will happen next. What if I can’t control it?”

Adrian approached her, his voice steady. “You’re doing exactly what you need to. You’ve saved lives, Eva. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to contain the infection.”
Eva shook her head. “But the power inside me... It feels like it’s growing stronger with every use. I can barely control it. What if I lose myself in it?”
Adrian placed a hand on her shoulder, offering her a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll figure it out. You’re not alone in this. We’re all in this together. But we need you. Your power is the key to saving people. We’ve seen it. You’ve healed the infected, Eva. You’ve purged the corruption.”
She looked up at him, her expression torn. “I don’t know if I can keep using it like this. What if it changes me? What if I become like the monsters we’re fighting?”
Adrian gave a small, understanding smile. “We all change. The world we’re in right now is about survival. And to survive, we have to adapt. But that doesn’t mean you’ll lose yourself in it. You’re in control, Eva. We just have to trust that we can guide you through it.”
Eva met his gaze, her eyes filled with uncertainty, but also a flicker of hope. “I don’t know if I can do this alone.”
“You’re not alone,” Adrian repeated. “We’ll help you, every step of the way.”
Mike, who had been standing silently off to the side, finally spoke up. “She’s right, Eva. We’ve all had to adjust. You’re not the only one who’s changing. We’ve all got our roles to play now.”
Eva gave a small, uncertain nod, her shoulders relaxing slightly. “I’ll try. But I need to understand what’s happening to me. What’s causing this power to grow so quickly?”
Adrian nodded. "We’ll figure it out together. First, we need to keep moving. The Iron Tusk won’t be the last faction we face, and there’s still more work to do."
As they gathered their gear and prepared to leave the hospital, Adrian couldn’t help but feel a sense of foreboding. The battles they had fought were only the beginning. The System had already shown its ability to adapt, and the factions they had already encountered were just pieces of a much larger puzzle.
But Eva was a critical piece in that puzzle. Her Pure Radiation abilities could purify the mutations, heal the infected, and counteract the growing corruption. They would need her strength—and her control—if they were to stand a chance against the forces that sought to tear the world apart.
As they exited the hospital, Sarah’s voice crackled through their comms. “I’ve been monitoring the situation. The Black Dawn is making its move. They’re gathering power, siphoning energy from the city’s core. We need to move fast.”
Adrian looked at Mike, Eva, and Sarah, each of them nodding in silent agreement. The road ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: they were ready. They were ready to face the next wave of enemies and the growing power of the System itself. The battle was just beginning, but with the Aether-Vanguard at their side, they would fight until the very end.
"Let’s go," Adrian said, his voice firm. "We have a fight ahead of us, and it’s time to finish this."
With that, the team moved out, ready for whatever came next. The world was shifting, but they would be the ones to shape the future.
