Chapter 15: Sarah Joins the Vanguard
The dust had barely settled from the chaos of the Iron Tusk ambush, yet the air around Adrian felt charged with anticipation. The execution of the warlord had been necessary, a harsh reminder of how unforgiving the System could be. With the immediate threat neutralized and the Node’s stability restored, Adrian knew it was time to focus on the next steps. The warlord’s death had prevented a catastrophic collapse, but that was only a small piece of the puzzle.
Sarah sat at a corner of the command center they had established in the Iron Tusk base, her eyes fixed on the data streaming from her modified console. The faint blue glow illuminated her face, but her expression was far from the triumph one might expect after successfully disabling an enemy faction. No, Sarah’s mind was already several steps ahead, her thoughts focused on the bigger picture.
Adrian walked over, his boots echoing on the metal floor as he approached Sarah. "How’s it looking?" he asked, his voice calm but laced with the weight of urgency. The battle was far from over, and they needed to be prepared for whatever came next.
Sarah glanced up, her face set in a determined expression. "I’ve gained some useful intel. The Iron Tusk’s network is vast, but they’re still working off the same old framework. They’ve hoarded Boss Cores, yes, but they’re not the only ones. There’s another faction rising in the city—one that’s been manipulating the energy flow and pushing the limits of what the System allows."
Adrian’s brow furrowed as he listened. "Another faction? Who?"
Sarah leaned forward, tapping a few keys on her console. "I don’t know their name, but I’ve traced some unusual energy patterns. They're hoarding Cores from every source they can find, and their intentions are far more dangerous than the Iron Tusk’s. They’re going after the Nodes themselves—trying to access and control the very heart of the System’s energy."
Mike, who had been pacing the room with a tense expression, stopped abruptly. "So, we’ve got another group of power-hungry maniacs to deal with?"
Sarah’s lips tightened. "Worse than that. They're not just looking to control energy—they’re looking to break the System entirely."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "We can’t let that happen. We need to find them before they destabilize everything. If the System collapses, we’ll all be caught in the chaos."

Sarah nodded. "Exactly. I’ve mapped out some of their locations, but we need to move fast. The energy levels in the city are fluctuating rapidly. If they continue, we might not be able to stabilize the Nodes in time."
Adrian turned away, his mind already racing. They had faced the Iron Tusk, but now they were up against a much more insidious enemy. He needed to plan their next move. He needed to know who was behind this new faction, and he needed to stop them before their plans reached fruition.
Suddenly, Adrian’s thoughts were interrupted by a voice behind him. "You know, you’re going to need more than just a group of fighters if you’re going to stop these factions. You’ll need an army—one that can move faster, act smarter, and outmaneuver these enemies."
Adrian turned around to see Sarah standing, her hands folded in front of her. She wasn’t speaking to him like an ally anymore—she was speaking like someone who had already seen the larger war unfold and was now offering a solution.
"What do you mean?" Adrian asked, his eyes meeting hers. "We’re already moving fast, and we’ve got a solid team. We can handle this."
Sarah’s lips curled into a faint, knowing smile. "You’ve got a team, but you don’t have a structure. What you need is a guild—an organized group of people who can take on these factions with the same precision you’ve been using to win these battles."
Adrian’s brow furrowed in confusion. "A guild? We’ve been fighting for survival, not organizing a guild."
"You’ve been fighting for survival, yes," Sarah agreed. "But to win this, you need something bigger. You need to be able to move as one. You need a core group of people—people who understand the System, who can use the energy, and who can keep pushing forward. You need a Vanguard."
Mike raised an eyebrow. "A Vanguard? What does that even mean?"
"It means a group of people who are ahead of the rest," Sarah explained. "A group that leads the way, takes the hardest hits, and fights for the future. Think of it as a spearhead for your resistance. And you need to organize it now, before these other factions get too powerful."
Adrian stood in silence, considering her words. He had always been focused on the immediate tasks—fighting the battles, securing the Nodes, and surviving the System’s endless tests. But Sarah was right. If they were going to truly take control, they needed structure. They needed to build a foundation that could support their efforts for the long haul.
He turned to Mike. "What do you think?"
Mike looked uncertain but nodded. "I get what she’s saying. If we’re going to take on more enemies, we can’t do it alone. We need a system, too."
Adrian turned back to Sarah, his decision made. "Alright. We’ll need to build this Vanguard. But I can’t do it alone. I need your help, Sarah."
She smiled, her eyes gleaming with determination. "That’s why I’m here. I’ll design the UI for the Vanguard’s operations. We’ll create a system that allows us to monitor everything—energy levels, movements, strategies, and guild members. We’ll build this from the ground up."
Adrian met her gaze. "And you’ll get your Genesis Shards. You’ll have the resources to create the flying fortress you’ve been dreaming of."
Sarah nodded, her smile widening. "Deal. I’ll help you build the Vanguard, and in return, you give me the tools to take this fight to the sky."
Adrian felt the weight of the future settling on his shoulders. They weren’t just fighting for survival anymore—they were building the foundation of something much bigger. The Aether-Vanguard, their guild, would be the spearhead in the war against the factions, against the System itself.
With Sarah’s expertise, the Genesis Ring’s power, and their combined will, they would be ready. The fight was far from over, but they now had a plan, a structure, and a mission.
"Let’s get to work," Adrian said, his voice steady and resolute. "The Vanguard starts now."
And with that, the team began to take the first steps toward building a future that could change the course of the System’s war forever.
