Chapter XLI: Morium of the Gargoyle District (Pt. 2)

Everyone started to laugh as one pneumarian lightly smacked the downed klevonian on the head.

I looked around at them enjoying this guy's torment. My stomach turned from the sickening anger that built up within me. This might've been the first district I could confidently say that I hated.

I noticed some other klevonians hanging upside down from the ceiling. Some of the others were spinning them around playfully.

"Hm?" Crete looked up. "Oh, those idiots thought they'd go cause trouble in a Celestial's territory. I explicitly told everyone not to accept a contract for their own benefit, and they try to sneak off anyway...defiance reaps discipline."

Crete looked at my strained expression and smirked at my disapproval.

"This bothers you," he stated, not really caring. "Most klevonians in the nation are sycophants."

"She's a tenderhearted one. Not many of those left," Theia added as a shard of glass was shot near my foot. It was hard enough to pierce the stone floor.

Avarice looked down at me in quiet, amused observation while Za'Fia placed a calm hand on my shoulder.

These aren't the type of people you'll learn anything worth our while from. Let's just leave before things get worse.

I bit my lip and turned around tensely without saying anything, receiving their mocking laughter that echoed around me.

"Hey, you leavin' already? You just got here. I might've cleaned up a bit; then again, I don't recall inviting you."

More laughter rang throughout the room.

I kept my mouth shut, not wanting to give them a reason to keep antagonizing us.

If you ask me, a show of strength would shut them up splendidly. But that may not end well for us, Avarice remarked, hating that he was forced to be part of this humiliation. Well, some enemies are better saved for another day...

"I've always hated people like you," Crete called out. "You think the world is supposed to be a gleeful, fair place where nothing bad happens, don't you?"

  He grinned.

"You think I'm some evil bastard for letting this happen, don't you?" he motioned to the klevonians being tormented.

"Wherever she's from, she was clearly raised spoiled," another mocked.

"Not all of us get to live the same life you did," another pointed out.

I clenched my fist, resisting the urge to cry from frustration or to jump and help free the klevonian that hung from the ceiling.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

"Alright. Alright, that's enough." Crete called out. "We continue pushin' her, and she'll do somethin' drastic. Clashin' with another Crest Head will only cause trouble for us."

  Crete sighed.

"Kid, you're adorable, you are, and I commend your moral compass. May the All Father bless you, and all that good stuff...but you don't know what kind of crimes those guys committed before this. You don't know if it's me doing this – punishing them – that keeps them in line. Don't be so quick to paint people in a certain light when you don't understand the full picture."

I continued walking, almost to the door.

  "Kid."

I stopped and turned to look at him.

"I don't go around pickin' fights with other crests. You got a problem with me, that's fine. So long as you don't bring your ideologies here, you won't have any problems from us."

"Is that all?" I responded flatly.

"Yeah...you'll find that there are worse Crest Heads out there than me who won't appreciate your criticisms...so be careful."

When we left the manor, I blasted off westward. I'd never flown faster to leave a place in my life. The next district was the Dragon District. A winter district that was directly south of the Royal Palace and marked the halfway point of our journey through Pneuma City. I only hoped this one treated its people better than the last place did.
