Chapter 21 : INEZ

His absence makes the hospital feel empty and unsettlingly quiet. He is the chaos I crave and the only one I ever will. He said he would come back but I know he won’t. People who get transferred to a different hospital, especially for such a reason, are most probably gone for good. Still, a part of me wishes he shouldn’t have had to go. The management warned me to not even take his name again, to forget him and to be thankful that they didn’t fire me...but how can I when they took the very person that mattered?

For the past two weeks I have been lying to Nico—telling him that Riven was shifted to the special care centre due some concerning behaviour and he will be back soon. Everyone in the asylum knows what happened, except Nico of course. No one, not even Asher has the heart to tell the boy that Riven’s gone for good. After all, they were pretty close, weren’t they? In one week, itself I am noticing that Nico has started to miss Riven a lot. He always keeps the fox plushie close to him.

Not much has changed since Riven went, we just have a new patient in the hospital. Her name’s Serene—Serene Aven Rosewell. She got transferred here from a high-security youth psych facility 2 weeks ago and damn, she’s been causing quite the chaos. On paper her diagnosis is written as MDD, BPD tendencies, Self-harm risk but fuck...she’s far from depressive. She walks like she owns the place and wears her scars like fashion. She’s too alive for this place, I wouldn’t have had believed she was diagnosed with MDD if it wasn’t written on paper. She’s a fucking storm wrapped in glitter but...I see the scars...

I see them every time her hoodie sleeves ride slightly up her arm, I see the way she uses humour as an armour, dominance as deflection.

But you know the thing that really catches my attention? Is the fact Nico seems to be running around this girl far too much for it to just be casual and serene is walking peace of destruction. God knows what her parents were thinking while naming her Serene because she most certainly isn’t that.

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

She’s quite the thrill… but not enough to fill the void of silence Riven has left behind. I wonder how he is doing right now. After all, I know that leaving this hospital and leaving me both affected him quite a lot. Fuck, this isn’t right, the other people don’t know him, they don’t see him the way I do, they don’t know what triggers him and what calms him down.

It’s ok Inez they’ll learn, just like you did. Calm down.

Everything’s just so dull without him around but he did it for me, didn’t he? Not a single flicker of hesitation as he stood there and just… said what he wanted to. I like his confidence—and I find it so damn hot.

His absence makes me realize how much I crave his presence.

“And I will bring ruin with me…”

That’s what he said, and I do believe him because I would be a fool not to believe something with such depth. I am seriously afraid of whatever this might trigger Riven to do. He’s unpredictable, he can snap anytime, just like a bowstring pulled taut.

And if you’re going to ask how I know him so well? Honestly, the answer is simple—Riven is me in an alternate universe, a world where people knew what I am and what I have done, even I would have been bought into an asylum with my hands and legs chained.

The thought of being Riven’s partner in crime has a shiver of thrill running through me. Gosh, imagine killing Asher together. That’s been the only thing I have been wanting to do for the past 3 damn weeks. It’s because of him this all is happening, if he hadn’t shown the footage of me and Riven, we wouldn’t have had gotten caught in the first place and none of this would have ever happened.

You messed with the wrong person Asher…

I’m going to get my back on you, in one way or the other.

  You just wait and watch…
