I lay in my makeshift bed as I listened to my summoner’s breathing. Despite it not being night, he was sound asleep.
I got up, being careful not to make any noise that would stir him awake.
After retrieving my key and quietly opening the door, I left and headed for the dorm building’s entrance. It felt awkward being wide awake in someone else’s room, and I’m the kind of person who needs to occupy myself with something to tire myself out.
The sun was beginning to set, and the sky started to take on an orange hue.
It felt like your typical sunset on Earth.
The thought of spending the rest of my new life in a different world sounded… terrifying, overwhelming even. Everything I’ve learned on Earth has been shaken and uprooted. The superpowers I’ve fantasized about could be real, and something I’ll have to acknowledge in the future.
On top of unfamiliar environments, I have to go to school. I mean, I was just born yesterday! Even schools in my world wait until the child is capable of speaking before they’re eligible to enroll.
How am I gonna deal with this language barrier? My options for dialogue are limited to what can be visualized easily, and anything more complex would require making comics to explain more difficult lines of thought. I mean, how would you discuss things like philosophy or economics?
Does this mean I’m stuck using my power just to communicate?
I was never one to look for conversation unless it was with something I liked. If it were something more mundane or general, I’d prefer to keep the conversation short and succinct. Repeating words or speaking slowly has become a pet peeve of mine, possibly attributed to the pursuit of excellence instilled within me.
As I admired the sunset, I heard students making conversation as they walked out of the school building toward the dorm.
So I guess classes end around sunset? No, maybe they end earlier, and my summoner just really looked forward to sleeping? I’ll have to figure out the school’s schedule and its culture during my enrollment.
When the students noticed me, they stopped conversing. There was a look of apprehension in their eyes.
I merely pointed my thumb toward the dorm building while stepping off the path. I wasn’t interested in whatever they wanted to say, but I kept my eyes on them in case they wanted to try something. Powers are a thing here, so who knows what they can do.
They did the same, slowly moving past while keeping their fronts toward me, before moving into a full-on mad dash toward the dorms.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Well, that happened. I don’t know why they’re afraid. Maybe I should inform my summoner of this interaction. He likely knows their faces.
The sun began to dip into the horizon, and I turned to re-enter the dorms, when I noticed that giant moon I first saw when I exited that ruin.
Wow, you can even see it when the sun’s out, much more clearly too. I wonder if it’s possible to go blind looking at this moon at night. Are eclipses a thing here?

I looked around the dorm’s waiting area. It looked like a small hotel reception desk. There were even benches and tables to wait around at.
It was empty, and there wasn’t anyone around, so I decided to look around the enclosure.
Inside it were some shelves built into the reception desk, a chair, and some documents I couldn’t read.
Seeing no reason to hurry back to room 61, I decided to look around a bit more, wanting to satiate my explorative curiosity.
The design of the interior gave me vibes of a rustic motel you’d find if you needed an impromptu place to stay the night. If I didn’t know any better, I might have even called it cozy.
I saw more closets throughout the building during my wandering. They all contained necessities, including pillows, blankets, bed sheets— everything you’d need in a complete set of beddings. There were also some small paper packages, but I didn’t open them, unsure of their contents.
I was about to turn back, believing I’d seen everything, when I noticed a gap in a wall.
Past the gap was what seemed to be a washroom. Sinks, showers, and I guessed toilets in the small part enclosed from the rest of the space.
Curious, I went to a sink and turned what I assumed to be a knob for a faucet. Lo and behold, water came out of it.
Does this mean this world has plumbing? Or is it limited to this school?
I quickly turned off the sink’s faucet and checked the shower and toilet. The showers were also operational, and I assumed it was the same for the toilets, not wanting to waste more water for a test flush. I couldn’t check the flushing system since it appeared to be built-in, but I believed it was more or less the same.
I thought I wouldn’t have the luxury of toilets, but it looks like that won’t be an issue.
I was about to go back to my summoner’s room when I was suddenly overcome with the urge to shit.
At the very least, I wouldn’t be wasting a flush.

Thankfully, there was some soap in the bathroom’s cabinets, so I was able to wash up. The toilet paper was also a welcome surprise. As for disposing of it, it looked like the used toilet paper was taken care of separately, seeing that it piled up in a small trash can. Gross.
I guess living here wouldn’t be so bad, even if it’s technically against my will.
I was in no position to be picky about where I’m staying after my reincarnation. That would be an issue for future me after I figure out money, quality of living, convenience, and many other factors I’ve yet to consider once I figure out this world.
I took out my room 61 key and inserted it into the door’s lock, turning it open, and entered the room.
The first thing I noticed was that my summoner wasn’t sleeping in his bed.
I stepped in further and found he was simply standing by the window, gazing at the sky. I couldn’t see him earlier because the corner hid where he stood from my initial position.
After confirming his well-being, I closed and locked the door behind me before turning to see him facing me.
He simply spoke some syllables, pointing to my makeshift bed, before plopping on his own and falling asleep.
I created and changed into some night clothes, folding my outfit and placing it on the table, before lying on my floor bed and drifting to unconsciousness.
