Chapter 44: Beginnings as a student

I followed him back to the room, and he used his key and opened the door, but didn’t go in. I held the door for him, and he immediately went to lean on the opposite wall before saying some syllables. I felt that he wasn’t rushing me, but also wasn’t dismissive of the idea of leaving me behind.

I went in and changed into my uniform, making sure to pat down any wrinkles and that my cuffs and collar were straightened, even making a simple full-body mirror to inspect myself before dissipating it.

I looked at the bowl I produced yesterday and the poster container containing my map. I pocketed my key before unfurling my map to get a look at the information Mr. Blonde had provided me with. The small copy of the map I had produced needed to be updated with escape routes in case I needed to run from a fight, so I made a bigger copy of the small map so that I could include potential escape routes and note things I wouldn’t have been able to account for, simply by memorizing the layout.

After folding and pocketing the map, I walked out dressed in my uniform and dress pants that I conjured. Nothing I saw from how students followed the dress code told me certain pants were necessary, just that they needed to be ‘appropriate’ by the standards. I didn’t have time to scrutinize the dress code, so I simply copied what every male student was wearing. I designed it to be easy to take off, as fancy clothing tended to prioritize style over function. As for why they needed to be easy to remove…

I simply pointed at my crotch, before pointing at the bathroom my summoner and I had just come from. He nodded and started walking toward the dorm’s exit.

I quickly ran into the bathroom and entered its stall, closing and locking it with the provided mechanism before relieving myself.

Now that I think about it. I haven’t pissed for over a day.

Maybe it’s a perk of being a recent transmigrator? Or does it have to do with my body’s constitution as a summoned being?

Thankfully, the urge to defecate occurred after I sat on the toilet, so I was able to take care of both needs quickly.

After doing my business and thoroughly washing my hands with soap and water, I quickly headed out to find my summoner. He wasn’t by his room, so I figured he’d be at the dorm’s entrance, or partway there. After navigating through the stairs and halls, I caught up to him at the lobby area, talking to another student.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

It was the guy I saw fighting the water assailant using flames. Well, I didn’t see the actual fight since I was focused on my summoner’s well-being, but from how the water assailant reacted, the inherent advantage water had against fire wouldn’t have helped him.

I need to go thank Fireboy.

“Hey! Thanks for your help!” I announced my presence, getting the attention of both.

Fireboy sounded excited to see me, saying some syllables happily. It’s a shame I couldn’t understand them, but I’m sure I would’ve loved to hear them through fluent ears. My summoner’s lack of reaction told me this was usual for Fireboy.

He continued speaking syllables to me, and I could only stand there awkwardly as incomprehensible words flowed out of his mouth. At this rate, I should make a sign indicating that I’m linguistically disabled or deficient, because a lot of people’s breath would be wasted if this fact weren’t made immediately known.

My summoner interrupted Fireboy’s words and pointed toward the exit, speaking something.

  Save!

Whatever he said was enough to keep Fireboy interested, even getting him to walk with my summoner out the already open door. They stopped outside the door, still conversing. Eventually, Fireboy waved back with his whole arm, and my summoner only waved once with his hand.

I heard my summoner make a sigh of relief, the kind you’d make after conquering a tiring day, before turning back to me with an annoyed expression.

Hey! Don’t blame me! You were talking to him! I simply felt it was necessary to thank him for saving your life!

Whatever grievances he had with me at that moment would have to wait, as the day brightened with the sun emerging from below the horizon. My summoner took that as a cue to bring me to the school, and I followed after him.

It was then that I noticed that no one else except Fireboy seemed to be out, a stark contrast to the sounds of footsteps resounding through his door as I waited for them to pass by so that I could explore the school without interruption.

He woke me up earlier than his usual time for something, but what? Just to teach how to brush my teeth and use the bathroom? I feel like that could’ve been done later when more students were getting up. Was he that afraid of encountering other students when I’m with him?

I felt more nervous as he guided me through the school. Thanks to the time I spent taking in the layout, navigating the place didn’t feel as daunting. The only thing I couldn’t understand is what my summoner is currently trying to accomplish.

I didn’t see him approach any door as we kept walking. The more rooms we passed, the more guesses I eliminated.

  This path… hang on.

I took out and unfolded the map I had in my pocket, matching our current location to the landmarks and corners we passed by. I thanked myself for taking the time to study the layout of the school, but the conclusion I reached as to where we were going didn’t put me any more at ease.

We were headed straight to the square where I saw the vine mage and wind mage fight each other.

I looked up to see my summoner’s back, his fast, confident strides suddenly making more sense. I initially thought he was overly enthusiastic about being an early bird, but seeing him enter the room through the giant double doors confirmed my suspicions.

He wanted to challenge me to a fight.
