## Chapter 29: What ∞ Attracts

  ## Chapter 29: What ∞ Attracts

  Day thirty-four.

Thermal: five point one, frontal cluster four point nine.

The resonance network had been running for eighteen hours and the baseline was still dropping. Not dramatically — two tenths was not a restoration, but it was a direction, and directions were what I tracked now instead of crisis thresholds.

  I made rice.

  Opened the forum thread.

The thread had been at 9,400 when I went to sleep. Two thousand replies overnight.

I scrolled to the new ones.

  ---

The ??? (Lv.∞) update had detonated.

The leaderboard refresh had fired at 11:47 PM — the exact moment the Aethermancer's Legacy set completed and the Anchor activated and the Presence Affirmation resolved my level from NaN to ∞. The whole server had seen it simultaneously. A player who had been unranked — level undefined, outside all classification systems — had appeared at the top of the Veilmire's solo speed record board with a tag that made no sense.

  Lv.∞.

Not a number. Not a tier. A symbol.

The forum had been trying to process it ever since.

Tessari_Builds had posted three times overnight. Still methodical, still narrowing. The analysis was getting close — *non-standard hardware, IronVeil backing, the NaN variable resolving through a set bonus effect, the set in question being the Aethermancer's Legacy which was just confirmed complete by the leaderboard timestamp* — but it was still academic. Tessari was a theorist. The posts were building a case, not hunting a player.

  Someone else had posted twice.

  Account name: **Korr_Brokerage**.

I had never seen the name before. Zero previous posts in this thread. But the account was three years old with 4,400 posts across the forum — a known presence, apparently, because three different players had quoted his posts with recognition. *Korr's on the scent.* *If Korr's interested it's worth something.* *Here we go.*

  Korr's posts were not analysis.

They were questions posed to the thread with the specific quality of questions that already had answers behind them.

*Question for anyone who's run the Veilmire this week: has the loot table felt different? Specifically the final room. Specifically the Aethermancer pieces.*

And: *Does anyone have a record of what ??? was carrying before the leaderboard update? I'm interested in the Finder's Piece specifically.*

  The Finder's Piece.

He already knew about the Finder's Piece.

I added a new column to the spreadsheet.

  *THREATS.*

First entry: *Korr_Brokerage — information broker, 3-year account, 4,400 posts. Knows about Finder's Piece specifically. Asking questions that already have answers. Motive: sale, not curiosity.*

  ### KaelVorn

The message from KaelVorn arrived at 9:14 AM.

KaelVorn was IronVeil's operations lead — the one who had arranged the representational deal in Chapter 17, institutional cover in exchange for IronVeil's name being publicly associated with the wanderer project. He had been quiet since the arrangement formalized. The message now was not quiet.

*We have a problem. Three problems actually. Call me.*

  I opened the voice channel.

KaelVorn's voice had the specific tension of someone who had been awake since the leaderboard update.

*The ∞ tag went live last night. I assume you know.*

  *I know.*

*What you may not know: within forty minutes of that update, Obsidian Pact and Redline both filed formal queries with Aetheria's player relations team asking for clarification on the level mechanic. They're not asking because they're confused. They're asking to establish a paper trail.*

I pulled up the awareness column and started adding.

*Obsidian Pact and Redline — rival guilds to IronVeil. Filed player relations queries re: ∞ level within 40 minutes of update. Building paper trail.*

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

  *What kind of paper trail?*

*The kind that precedes a harassment campaign,* KaelVorn said. *Obsidian Pact has done this before. They identify a player with an unusual mechanic, establish it as a disputed item through official channels, then use that as cover for targeting the player in open-world PvP. "We're just investigating an anomaly." Meanwhile their top PvP team has been camped outside the Veilmire entrance since six AM.*

I checked the Veilmire entrance on the admin overlay.

Four players. High gear scores. Obsidian Pact tags.

  Waiting.

*Second problem,* KaelVorn continued. *The set hunters. The Aethermancer's Legacy set completing publicly means every serious collector on the server knows it's possible. The pieces are in loot tables. They'll start farming. But the set can't be completed without the Finder's Piece, and the Finder's Piece is—*

  *Unique,* I said. *One exists.*

*On you. Which means you're the bottleneck for anyone trying to complete the set. That makes you valuable to people who want to complete it legitimately, and a target for people who want to take it.*

*Can the Finder's Piece be looted from a player?*

  A pause.

*It's flagged as no-drop,* KaelVorn said. *But Korr is already asking questions about it. If there's a mechanic that makes it transferable he'll find it.*

  *And the third problem.*

  *Vance wants a meeting.*

Vance was IronVeil's guild master. I had dealt with KaelVorn for the operational arrangement. Vance himself had never contacted me directly.

  *What kind of meeting?*

*The kind where he explains to you that IronVeil's name being associated with ??? (Lv.∞) is now significantly more complicated than it was yesterday, and that he has thoughts about how to proceed.* A pause that carried weight. *He's not threatening you. But he has leverage and he knows it. The representational arrangement was informal. It doesn't obligate him to anything.*

I added to the THREATS column:

*IronVeil (Vance) — representational arrangement informal. Has leverage. Meeting requested. Not hostile yet.*

*Obsidian Pact — PvP team at Veilmire entrance since 6 AM. Paper trail building via player relations.*

*Redline — also filed player relations query. Unknown further activity.*

*Set hunters — Finder's Piece unique, makes Leo bottleneck. Value and target simultaneously.*

*When does Vance want to meet?*

*Today,* KaelVorn said. *He's flexible on time. He's not flexible on today.*

  ### The Veilmire Entrance

I logged into the game at 11 AM and did not go to the Veilmire.

I went to the marketplace instead.

The morning browse, the routine I had run for thirty-three days — the Preserved Lens reading hidden tags, the income stream. Except today the routine had a secondary function: giving me time to think before walking into anything.

The echoes messaged at 11:23 AM.

  *WE SAW THE LEADERBOARD.*

*WE HAVE BEEN MONITORING THE FORUM THREAD SINCE MIDNIGHT.*

  *WE KNOW ABOUT KORR.*

*WE KNOW ABOUT THE FOUR PLAYERS AT THE VEILMIRE ENTRANCE.*

*WE WANT TO TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THE OBSIDIAN PACT TEAM.*

  *Go ahead,* I typed.

*THE PLAYER IN THE NORTHWEST POSITION IS CARRYING A SUPPRESSED ITEM.*

  *{item_tag: suppressed — detection_mechanic: active}*

*WE CAN SEE IT THROUGH THE COLLECTION LAYER.*

*IT IS NOT IN ANY KNOWN ITEM TABLE.*

*IT IS DESIGNED TO DETECT THE FINDER'S PIECE.*

  I looked at that.

A detection item. Specifically for the Finder's Piece. Not in any known item table, which meant it had come from somewhere outside the standard loot economy.

  *Where did it come from?*

  *WE DO NOT KNOW YET.*

  *WE ARE LOOKING.*

*BUT LEO — THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS.*

*THEY KNEW BEFORE THE LEADERBOARD UPDATE THAT THE FINDER'S PIECE EXISTED.*

  *SOMEONE TOLD THEM.*

  Someone had told them.

Which meant the information leak predated the public leaderboard update.

Which meant someone with access to the admin log, or the item tables, or the supervised pilot documentation, had been sharing information with Obsidian Pact.

I updated the THREATS column again.

*Detection item at Veilmire — not in known item tables. Pre-existing knowledge of Finder's Piece. Information leak from inside Aetheria systems. Source: unknown.*

I bought the three marketplace items I had identified, pocketed the proceeds, and stayed out of the Veilmire.

The four Obsidian Pact players waited at the entrance.

  ---

  ### End of Day

I met with Vance at 4 PM, in a private guild hall IronVeil maintained in Irongate's northern district.

Vance was not what I had expected from KaelVorn's framing. He was methodical rather than threatening, the way a player who had run a major guild for four years learned to be when dealing with valuable and volatile assets.

He had four things to say.

First: the representational arrangement stood. IronVeil's name stayed associated with the wanderer project. He considered the ∞ tag a positive development for the association, not a liability.

Second: IronVeil could provide active protection in open-world PvP zones. Three of their top combat players available on request.

Third: this protection was not free. The existing arrangement was publicity. Protection required something additional.

  *What?* I asked.

*Access to the undefined space mechanics,* Vance said. *Not permanent. Not exclusive. A consultation. IronVeil's best players have been trying to access the seam mechanics for two years. We want to understand what you're doing and how.*

*I can't share the chip mechanics,* I said. *Those are mine.*

*I'm not asking for the chip. I'm asking for the methodology. How you find things in undefined space. How you read the seams.* A pause. *It's information. Not the hardware.*

Fourth: Vance already knew about Korr.

*He's been building a dossier on ??? for six weeks,* Vance said. *Before the leaderboard update. He's been quiet because he was waiting for something worth selling. Last night gave him that. You have approximately three days before he sells to the highest bidder.*

  *Who's the highest bidder?*

*Right now?* A pause. *Obsidian Pact.*

  I sat with that.

Korr selling Leo's identity to the guild that already had a detection item for the Finder's Piece and a PvP team at the Veilmire entrance.

  Three days.

Thermal at logout: five point one.

Not crisis — not close to cascade. But the resonance network hadn't been designed for this kind of pressure and I didn't know yet what it would do under sustained threat.

  Updated the spreadsheet.

  *Day 34.*

*THREATS: Korr (3 days to sale), Obsidian Pact (detection item, PvP team, identity buyer), Redline (unknown), Vance/IronVeil (protection offer — cost: methodology consultation), information leak from inside Aetheria.*

*Vailmire: avoided. Four OP players still waiting.*

*Echoes: monitoring. Detection item source investigation ongoing.*

  Personal log:

*Yesterday I completed the collection and turned off the light thinking: what comes next, everything.*

*Today I found out what everything includes.*

*Four players at the Veilmire entrance with a device that finds the Finder's Piece.*

*An information broker with three days before he sells my name.*

*A guild master who wants my methodology as the price of protection.*

*I have been operating in the undefined space for thirty-four days.*

*The undefined space was safe because nobody was looking.*

  *They're looking now.*

  I turned off the light.
