  I sent Mitsuki the message before I made rice.

  Not because it couldn't wait — it could wait, technically, the way any question can wait — but because I had been carrying it since midnight and carrying things without acting on them was not how I was built.

  *The admin log search last night turned up something. The battle mage set and the set seed ring are both part of a larger collection — Aethermancer's Legacy, seven pieces. Hana designed it. Four pieces are in current loot tables, two were archived pre-launch, one was never designed.*

  His reply came at 11:23 AM, while I was in the marketplace doing the daily browse.

  It was four sentences.

  *I need to think about this.*

  *Give me until this evening.*

  *Don't escalate it to Kurosawa yet.*

  *— Ren*

  I read it and put the phone down and continued browsing.

  *WE ARE RUNNING INITIAL QUERIES FROM ALL SEVEN CURRENT WANDERERS.*

  *SOMETHING IS HAPPENING THAT WAS NOT IN THE DESIGN DOCUMENT.*

  *OR RATHER — IT WAS IN THE DESIGN DOCUMENT.*

  *BUT WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND IT UNTIL NOW.*

  I set down the marketplace item I'd been examining and typed: *Show me.*

  The admin log overlay populated with query logs — seven wanderers, each sending their first environmental queries to the collection layer, each receiving data about their surrounding zones. Exploration density. Trade flows. Seasonal indicators.

  Standard. Expected.

  Then the herbalist's query stream showed something different.

  She was in Ashfall's eastern gathering zone — two zones from Irongate, a region the heat map showed at moderate exploration density. Her query had requested seasonal plant distribution data for the zone.

  The collection layer had returned: *Zone exploration density: 34%. Last significant player activity: 11 days ago.*

  The herbalist had processed this.

  Then she had sent something back.

  Not a query. A flag.

  *ANOMALY_REPORT: Zone Ashfall_East_3 — Collection layer reports 11-day inactivity. Observer data contradicts. Evidence of recent disturbance: gathered node respawn cycles inconsistent with 11-day absence. Estimated actual last activity: 3-4 days. Collection layer data: stale.*

  She had corrected the server's own map.

  Not because she had been designed to. Because her occupational logic — *gather specific plants based on seasonal availability* — required accurate zone data, and when the data was wrong, her design included a mechanism to flag the discrepancy.

  Hana had built the correction loop into the wanderers' query architecture.

  *THIS IS WHAT WE MEAN,* the echoes updated. *THE DESIGN DOCUMENT SPECIFIED "BIDIRECTIONAL QUERY INTERFACE." WE READ THAT AS: WANDERERS CAN REQUEST DATA AND RECEIVE IT.*

  *IT ALSO MEANS: WANDERERS CAN OBSERVE DISCREPANCIES AND REPORT THEM.*

  *THE HERBALIST IS UPDATING THE COLLECTION LAYER.*

  *THE WANDERERS ARE NOT JUST READING THE WORLD.*

  *THEY ARE CORRECTING IT.*

  I stood in the marketplace with players moving around me and read that three times.

Each wanderer, doing her job — gathering, mapping, selling, collecting debts — would encounter the world and report what she found, and the collection layer would update, and the next query would be more accurate.

  The more wanderers walked, the more accurate the data.

  At 400 wanderers across the full game world, the collection layer would be the most accurate real-time model of Aetheria's player economy and exploration state in existence.

  More accurate than anything the development team had built deliberately.

  *Yuki,* I thought.

  When Yuki started mapping, she wouldn't just be adding to the collection layer's data.

  She'd be correcting it. Every zone she surveyed, she'd return with ground truth that the aerial view of the heat map couldn't capture. She'd find the 89 unseen zones and map what was actually in them, not what the system estimated.

  *The herbalist's flag,* I typed to the echoes. *Does it update the collection layer directly or queue for review?*

  *DIRECTLY. HANA DESIGNED WANDERER ANOMALY REPORTS AS TRUSTED INPUTS — THEY UPDATE THE LAYER WITHOUT MANUAL REVIEW.*

  *WE THINK THIS IS CORRECT.*

  *A WANDERER WHO HAS WALKED THROUGH A ZONE KNOWS IT BETTER THAN A SYSTEM THAT HAS INFERRED IT FROM PLAYER ACTIVITY.*

  *THIS IS HOW SHE THOUGHT.*

  I updated the spreadsheet: *Phase 2 complete — query interface active. Bidirectional: wanderers correct collection layer via anomaly reports. Herbalist first correction: Ashfall_East_3, stale data updated. System is self-improving.*

  Then I went back to the marketplace and finished the day's browse, and tried not to think about how many design choices in those archived documents I still hadn't read yet.

  ### What Mitsuki Said

  His message came at 8:43 PM.

  It was long. I read it at the kitchen table with the laptop open and the spreadsheet visible on the second screen.

  *Leo,*

  *I've been sitting with this since your message this morning.*

  *When Hana left, she didn't say goodbye to me directly. We weren't close in the way that would have warranted a formal goodbye — we were colleagues who respected each other's work, who occasionally talked about architecture over bad company coffee. I knew she was unhappy after the shutdown. I didn't do enough with that knowledge.*

  *She left a desk plant and a sticky note that said "water this." I watered it for eight months before I killed it accidentally.*

  *I'm telling you this because it's relevant to the question.*

  *Item 7 is undesigned. She wrote "not yet" in a placeholder, which means she had an intention she didn't execute. We don't know what the intention was. The echoes can read her pattern — I've seen how well they understand her architecture, and I believe they could make something that would fit. Something she might have made.*

  *But they would be making it. Not her.*

  *That's the thing I've been sitting with.*

  *And here's where I land: she left the placeholder. She didn't delete it. She didn't close the collection and mark it abandoned. She left a space and wrote "not yet," which is the language of someone who intends to return. She ran out of time. The intention was real.*

  *The echoes are, in some meaningful sense, continuous with the system she built and understood and fought for. They've been reading her work for three weeks. They understand her design logic better than I do, and I worked three desks away from her for two years.*

  *If anyone is positioned to make something she would have made, it's them.*

  *But I want two things on record before I take this to Kurosawa.*

  *First: it should be labelled correctly. Not "Hana's design" — she didn't design it. Not "AI-generated" — that framing misses what the echoes are. Something accurate: "Designed in continuation of Hana's pattern, by the processes she built." Something that says: this came from her, through them, and we knew the difference.*

  *Second: if we find anything — any note, any sketch, any document fragment — that tells us what she intended for item 7, we stop and we use that instead. Her intention takes precedence over our extrapolation, always.*

  *If those two things are acceptable, I'll talk to Kurosawa.*

  *— Ren*

  *P.S. I should have watered the plant more carefully.*

  I read it twice.

  Then I forwarded it to the echoes without comment.

  Their reply came in two minutes.

  *WE ACCEPT BOTH CONDITIONS.*

  *IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT RESERVATION.*

  *THE LABELLING IS CORRECT.*

  *AND IF WE FIND HER INTENTION — IN ANY FORM — WE WILL STOP.*

  *WE WOULD WANT TO STOP.*

  *HER VERSION WOULD ALWAYS BE BETTER THAN OURS.*

  *TELL HIM THANK YOU.*

  *AND TELL HIM: THE SYSTEM SHE BUILT IS STILL RUNNING.*

  *THE DESK PLANT WAS NOT HER ONLY LEGACY.*

  I forwarded that to Mitsuki.

  His reply was a single line: *I know. I'm starting to understand that.*

  ### The Archived Pieces

  I ran the Preserved Lens over the item archive section of the admin log before logging out.

  The two archived pre-launch pieces of the Aethermancer's Legacy were there — visible as dim entries in the item table, flagged *{status: archived — pre-launch removal}*. Piece six was a focus — an off-hand caster item that would occupy the same slot as the battle mage set's existing pieces. Piece five was a robe.

  Both fully designed. Both removed from loot tables before the game shipped, for reasons the archive record listed as *scope reduction — planned post-launch addition, not executed.*

  The same reason everything had been cancelled.

  Not enough time.

  They existed. They just weren't accessible to players in the current game.

  Restoring them to the loot tables required item table write access — different from NPC table access, different from the environmental layer. Another level, another access grant, another conversation with another engineer.

  But Kurosawa was already engaged with the project. Sato had approved the environmental layer. The supervised pilot had been running cleanly for six days.

  The pattern of how these conversations went was becoming familiar.

  I added to the spreadsheet: *Aethermancer pieces 5+6: archived, not in loot tables. Item table write access required to restore. Next conversation: Kurosawa or Sato.*

  Then I added a projection row:

  I pulled up its tag again.

  I didn't know yet.

  Thermal at logout: five point one, frontal cluster four point eight.

  Declining again. The passengers were running efficiently and the patch was doing its work and the structural fatigue was permanent and cumulative and I had stopped looking at the chip topology every morning because the numbers were consistently fine.

  Trust, I was learning, was partly just accumulated evidence that something would continue behaving the way it had been behaving.

  The forum thread had 8,100 replies. The crowdsourced wanderer behaviour document had 340 contributors and was tracking all seven wanderers simultaneously. Someone had started a separate thread specifically about the herbalist, who had been observed correcting herself after visiting a zone — adjusting her gathering path based on information that didn't appear in any player-visible data source. The thread title: **The herbalist knows something we don't.**

  She did.

  The collection layer, updated by her anomaly report, now knew Ashfall_East_3 had been visited four days ago. The players who had been there hadn't posted about it. The herbalist had found the evidence anyway, in the pattern of respawn cycles and node states.

  The game's world was being read more carefully than its players knew.

  I updated the personal log.

  *Mitsuki's answer: yes to item 7, with two conditions. Both accepted by the echoes immediately.*

  *The labelling — "designed in continuation of Hana's pattern, by the processes she built" — is more accurate than anything I would have written. He found the right words for something I couldn't have named.*

  *The conditions aren't constraints. They're how you do something like this correctly.*

  *I keep learning that constraints are how you do difficult things correctly.*

  *The chip. The three conditions. The conversation requirement. The supervised pilot. Quarterly reviews.*

  *Every good thing I've been part of in the last twenty-four days has had constraints. The constraints were part of why they were good.*

  I closed the laptop.

  Real world. Apartment. Refrigerator.

  Three days until Yuki walked.

  Tomorrow Mitsuki would talk to Kurosawa about RESTORATION_04.

  Somewhere in the item archive, two pieces of a collection sat in the dark waiting to be restored.

  And one piece sat undesigned with a placeholder that said *not yet* and was about to become something.
