After the test, none of the recruits were in the mood to talk. Even Blue and Leo, the only two who didn't seem traumatized by the experience, didn't want to speak.
Hera stayed silent after they left the Guild and went straight to the train station. There was a small part of her that wanted to see Helena. Why? She wasn't entirely sure. Maybe to ask if this is really how things were supposed to be. Or if this test was right.
Then again, none of that mattered. Mr. Greyson was right, the MAZE was a dangerous place. Living there wasn't like having a regular nine to five job. If she wanted to explore, she would have to kill monsters, or she would be killed by them.
Since it was Saturday, the recruit's backpack was heavier. Not because of anything related to the Guild. This was just her overnight bag since she was going to her parents' house. As she walked, two images kept popping into her head. The bloody kobold lying motionless on the floor, and the Leader with an evil grin.
Hera didn't even realize when she had arrived at the right train. The one leaving the city. She had to go through two transfers before getting here. Maybe the days of dissociating while going back home after work were paying off.
She shook her head. What she needed right now was to take some time and process everything. Yes, the test was awful, and that could happen in real life. The MAZE was a dangerous place. She knew that. Yet, knowing and feeling that firsthand were different things.
Being an explorer had been Hera's dream through all of her life. Yet, that experience was enough for her to doubt if this was the right path. Maybe she should just be one of the many people who had levels and lived on Earth. Then again, the experience was still fresh in her mind. Deciding it now as not the best option.
Hera decided to use the weekend to process what happened. When Monday came, she would make up her if she would continue pursuing her dream or not. Or, more specifically, if she was truly willing to spend her life going into dangerous situations or not.
Thinking about her future, Hera nodded off against the window of the train. Her parents' house wasn't far from the capital where she was living, just a four-hour trip. She was going there mainly to see her father and grandmother. They were the only ones who always believed in her, no matter what.
Hera graduated in a town called Burtois. It was a small town with just over 10,000 people there. Even with a population like that, it felt like everyone knew each other. Even so, she never called that place her childhood home. After all, she was originally from the East coast, before moving to the middle of the country.
They never spent too long in the same place, as her mother always found one reason or another to make them move. Only when they arrived in Burtois that things changed and Stella finally wanted to settle.
Thankfully, it was just three train stops away from Brilansis, a large metropolis with the Guild at its very center. Despite that, it still took almost 4 hours for Hera to finally arrive in her parents' town. Walking out of the station, she picked her phone and sent a text to her dad. It was a simple text just to let him know she was in town and would take the bus to get home. She was erasing the word bus to change to a cab when Hera noticed a van parked just outside the station.
It was a brown van that had a paint job to look like it was made of wood. On the side of it, in big golden letters was the name of a company.
KINGS LAY in our WOODWORK.
It was her dad's van, the one he used to make deliveries. The Kingsley name was in a fancy font that made the A look like an E, and the ‘in our’ part was in small letters. Hera remembered how excited her dad was when he updated the logo. Saying it would be a new era for Kingsley Woodwork.
That was his own store. And the rebranding was part of the reason why Hera loaned him all of her savings. Sitting in the driver's seat, a big burly man looked around the station searching for someone.
Feeling a bit nostalgic, Hera activated her [Hide] skill before leaving the station. It was already dark out, only increasing what her skill would let her do.
She quickly moved through the parking lot and towards the van. Circling around it, Hera walked past the passenger door and to the back. While moving, she kept tapping her fingers in the rhythm of the ‘happy birthday' song on chassis of the car.
"What?" A loud voice came from inside the van.
With a smile, Hera crouched and tapped her fingers again. This time on the right side of the van, following the same rhythm as before.
"Who's there?" the voice said.
Hera crept closer, now tapping the song nonstop.
"If that is a joke, it ain't funny!"
Holding back her giggle, Hera couldn't believe this still worked. It was something from such an old movie, yet her dad still got spooked. She tapped on the driver's door and kept watching out for some movement. The last time she did this, she got hit in the face by the door and that would ruin the best part.
"Someone better tell me what is going on, or I start swinging," the voice said in a demanding tone.
Hera tapped a few more times and jumped, screaming.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIMMY!"
What followed was the noise of a large man jumping towards the other seat while cursing life itself.
Hera started laughing, and when the man finally calmed down, he opened the door.
"I come here to be nice and you pull this crap? Why did it have to be the song from that movie? How could you be such a cruel daughter?”
"Maybe it was those times you woke me up using a hose," Hera walked towards him and gave her dad a big hug.
"I missed you, Goldilocks."
Hera giggled like a kid, she hadn't heard that nickname in a long time.
"And I missed you, grumpy bear," she replied with a smile.
They spent a long time together like that, and eventually, both got into the van.
"You know, I kind of miss being called Papa bear," Eridan slammed the door and turned on the engine.
Hera rolled her eyes, "C'mon, Dad. You know, that sounds weird when I'm this old. Especially after that Valentine's Day."
"I've told you, your mother was just trying something," the man blushed while he drove off.
"Yeah, yeah. I don't care. My parent's love life is the last thing I want to know about." Hera cut him off quickly.
"Ok, fine. New topic. What's the news you have to tell me? Did you get promoted? Changed jobs? Is it a boy? Are you engaged? Let me see that hand!" Eridan moved closer to Hera, trying to look at her fingers.
Hera let out a sigh while showing both hands. This was something her dad started doing once she moved out. Pretending that in the month it had been since they saw each other, her whole life had changed. She looked away with a smirk, realizing that it only took a week.
"Can we stop by grandma? I want to tell you both. You know how she will get if you hear it first," Hera replied.
Eridan shivered, "Fair point. I love her to bits, but by the System, the woman knows how to make you feel guilty."
Using that to change topics, Hera asked about the store. Eridan excitedly started to tell her how much business was blooming and how well things were going ever since he had bought the workshop he wanted.
"Hera, thank you again for lending me some money. I know how hard you were working to save that much. But without that tree grower, I don't know what would've happened. Give me just a few months to stabilize things, and I'll pay you back."
Hera gave him a soft smile. There was no reason to thank her. Kingslay Woodwork was part of the family.
"Don't worry, Dad. Consider the money an early birthday gift."
"Hera, don't even joke about that. It's too much money." Eridan stared at his daughter, his eyes full of guilt.
"Maybe, but it's worth seeing you like this. I don't remember the last time you were so happy."
Eridan blushed. He really was acting like an excited kid these past weeks. About fifteen minutes later, they arrived at her grandmother's house.
They didn't even ring the doorbell. Triss wouldn't want that. As the father and daughter duo walked inside, they saw the elderly grandmother sitting in the living room. A tray of cookies and tea already on the coffee table.
Grandma Triss had thin white hair and a pair of glasses resting on her nose. She wore a light blue handmade sweater and a pair of beige pants. To finish the getup were a pair of pink bunny slippers Hera had given her last holidays.
"Hera! Sweetheart, it's been too long." The woman said before pulling her granddaughter into a hug.
"I know Grandma Triss. I'm sorry about that." Hera said, hugging her back. Despite their words, they saw each other roughly once a month.
"Come, come. Get in, you must be hungry," Grandma Triss pulled Hera to a chair.
"Actually, Mom, we are going to have dinner later," Eridan protested.
"Shush. You are not stopping me from feeding my granddaughter. If you want, you can go home, and Hera eats the strawberry cheesecake cookies," the elderly woman said.
"You... you made strawberry cheesecake cookies?" Eridan stuttered before quickly moving towards the couch by his daughter's side.
Hera couldn't help but chuckle. It was a mean move, making his favorite dessert. She had never seen her dad say no to those cookies.
It was barely seven o'clock, and they were already eating what amounted to dinner. Grandma Triss was a genius in the kitchen, and she didn't even have any skills. She had never gotten her level up. And just the spread of pastries and desserts would be more than anyone wanted to eat for the night.
After a few minutes, Grandma Triss became too curious to beat around the bush, "So dear, what was the big news you had for us?"
Hera swallowed the bite she was chewing, "Well... it was just something to tell. But after today, I want your advice too."
Eridan and Triss stopped eating, feeling the situation could be more serious than they expected.
"To start..." Hera picked her status card and showed to them.
Hera Kingsley
Level 2
"I won a raffle. The jackpot was a level up and well, I got it," she explained.
Hera immediately saw both her dad and grandmother's faces light up.
"Hera! That is amazing! I'm so happy for you. You can try to become an explorer now. I missed that spark you had before you... you know," Eridan said.
Grandma Triss nodded, "You do look much happier than you were last month. You looked like you were just surviving. Now you can live! Even if it takes a while to be an explorer."
"Here is the thing, Grandma. It won't take that long," Hera told them what happened in the last week. From meeting Helena and discovering her skills all the way through the test she had today. All the while, she had to make sure not to mention anything she wasn't allowed to talk about.
Her grandmother listened quietly, while her dad kept complaining about how Mr. Greyson was a bad teacher and how that test would just traumatize the students.
"Now, I'm not sure what to do. Being an explorer was everything I've dreamed of since I don't know when. But, can I do this? Risk my life every day, kill monsters and whatever else happens inside the MAZE."
Hera looked at the two people she loved the most.
"What do you guys think?" she asked.
Eridan scratched the back of his head before speaking, “Look, honey. It's kind of hard for me to tell you what I think. I mean, you are asking if my daughter should have a job where she could die at any moment. It's not something I can wholeheartedly agree.”
Grandma Triss slapped his arm, "Since when did I raise such a selfish fool as my son?"
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
That reaction shocked both Hera and her dad. Before any of the two could say a word, Grandma Triss started speaking.
"Hera, darling. Your father might be right. But what we feel shouldn't matter. Now, if you are asking if I believe you have what it takes to be an explorer. Then, my answer is yes. Since you were a little girl, I saw you climbing trees, fighting the boys in the playground, and trying to find hidden places around town. There is no doubt in my mind that you would be a wonderful explorer. But most of all, can you think about another thing you want to do as much?"
Hera kept looking into her grandmother's eyes. They were old, full of wrinkles, and wise. She had a long and happy life, Hera knew that.
"I'm scared I won't have as much time as you, Grandma, not if I become an explorer," Hera said. Finally admitting to herself that fear.
"If it's just because of fear, know this. We all will die someday. And you already have your grandfather waiting on the other side, so you won't be alone there. But let me tell you this. The things that scared me the most are the ones that made me happier. Like marrying your grandfather or giving birth to your father. After all, thanks to him I have you," Grandma Triss replied.
"Hey! I'm still here, you know," Eridan complained.
Grandma Triss laughed and kissed her son. During the rest of the meal, Hera kept thinking about what her grandmother had said. She had to make a decision. Could she live knowing she gave up on her dream? Could she be happy doing anything else? Did she have what it takes to be an explorer?
When Hera and her dad finally got home, it was already late. Her mother was taking a bath, and Hera took the chance to go to the bedroom, saying she was tired from the long day.
Hera wasn't sleepy. So she continued watching the playlist about the three heroes. This was the political drama with Cyrus as the main character. It was heavily dramatized, and the part about making deals bored the recruit to no end, but the fights were good.
The last of the 4 episodes ended, and Hera was still wide awake. Going to the kitchen to grab something to eat, she found her mother leaning on the counter with a cup of tea in her hand.
"Hello, sweetheart. Sorry I wasn't here when you arrived. I wasn't expecting you two to get home so late," Stella said with a smile, her blond hair, all on one side of her face, going halfway through her chest.
"Don't worry, Mom. Sorry, I went straight to bed. I had a long day yesterday," Hera said, opening the fridge to look for milk.
"Long day at that little bookstore you work at?" her mother said between sips.
"Something like that," Hera mumbled.
"Honey, you should speak up when you talk. If you don't, people won't know you are there," her mother replied with a sigh.
Hera didn't even bother saying it again. She had given up on that a long time ago. It didn't matter how much she followed her mother's advice. There was always something else to fix.
"Sorry, I just asked Where is the milk. I'm not seeing it here," Hera tried to change the subject.
"Milk? No, no, no, it's much too late for that. If you drink it now, not only will you have a bad night of sleep, it will also go straight to your thighs." her mother said, pushing Hera away from the fridge.
"Here, if you are having trouble to sleep drink this," she passed Hera a cup of tea, "it has chamomile, kale, cucumber, green tea, rose water and spinach. It will knock you right out."
Hera grabbed the cup and stared at the green liquid inside. This would probably knock her out just by smelling it.
"Thanks, Mom," Hera replied weakly.
"Now, I'm going to bed. We have a big day tomorrow, your cousins are coming from school. Ah, look at me still talking like they are kids. They are in college now. Maybe you can ask how it's like there. Who knows, you might be inspired to do something with your life."
Stella placed her cup in the sink and walked past her daughter.
"And honey, try not to sleep with makeup on. I'm glad you are finally taking care of yourself, but you need to be careful. Not only it's bad for your skin, but it will stain the sheets." Stella said, rubbing Hera's cheek.
"But I'm not wearing any makeup." Hera protested.
"Hera, you are much too old to be embarrassed about those things. In the guest bathroom, there are some tissues that are perfect for cleaning this up. Just let me know if you use them all so I can put it on the shopping list."
Not leaving any chance for Hera to reply, Stella walked back to her bedroom.
Feeling like she was in high school again, Hera waited to hear the sound of the door closing before dumping the tea in the sink. Any hopes she had for drinking some warm milk or making a snack was gone. Instead, she just turned around and went back to the bedroom.
When the morning finally came, Hera was still tired. She barely had any sleep. The image of the kobold trainer kept popping in her head through the night. Some times, her mother's face would take its place.
It was 6 in the morning when Hera decided to leave the bedroom. And the first thing she heard was her mother complaining about how much she needed to do for lunch. Fearing her mom would ask for help, Hera quickly went out, saying she would buy something for breakfast. That way, Stella would have more time to do what she needed to do.
Hera left before her mom could answer. She knew that if she stayed around, Stella would ask her to help in the kitchen. The problem wasn't helping out, but anything she did would be wrong. She already had too much on her mind without having to deal with a scolding for doing things the wrong way.
Hera greeted a few people she recognized on the way to a bakery close by. Arriving at the store, she had no idea what to order. She couldn't decide if it was better to ask just for bread or get something fancier. It was weird. She never had any problems ordering food. Even as a kid, she never took long to decide what she wanted.
After almost half an hour staring at the display filled with different pastries. Hera realized she would never leave like this, and finally, she ordered.
"Hi, could you get me one of each?" Hera said to the attendant.
"Sure thing! One of each of what?" the attendant asked with a smile.
"Everything in the display, please," Hera replied, not giving it much thought.
"You want one of each thing that is in the display?" the attendant tried to hide his shock.
"Yeah, is that a problem? Actually, no. Give me 100 grams of the ones you sell by weight," Hera asked, absent-minded.
"No problem at all, I was just confirming your order," the attendant blurted out. Knowing that he should never talk a customer out of a purchase.
It took another ten minutes of waiting before all that she purchased was ready to go. In the meantime, Hera paid 137 gold for the pastries.
With everything ready, Hera took the five bags filled with food and walked back home. To anyone watching, that was an odd sight. That small woman was carrying five heavy bags without a problem. If it were any other person, they could just assume they were high level. But most people in the neighborhood knew Hera was still level one.
Hera was oblivious to the situation. Her focus was on the decision she had to make. The test was terrifying, but that was the whole point, she understood that now. It wasn't about completing it or teaching them a new skill. Mr. Greyson wanted to know if she could fail while facing something very dangerous and keep going.
In essence, the MAZE wasn't about great acts of heroism, or exploring, or even fighting. It was about survival. Just as a teacher had to teach, and explorer had to survive. But the question remained, could she go there knowing she could die at any moment?
Before she knew, Hera was already back at her parents' house. She opened the door and placed the bags on the table, calling her mom to eat. Looking at the time, her dad would probably still be sleeping. Letting out a long sigh, she sat down and searched for something that looked tasty.
"Thank you for the help, sweetheart. Did you remember to get those..." Stella stopped talking the second she saw the bags on the table, "Why did you get so much food?"
Hera bit her lip. Since many people were coming, she thought it was a good idea to buy a lot of food. However, she forgot to account for Stella's reaction.
"I just tried to help, I know how much hard work is to put these gatherings together, and I wanted to give you a break," Hera answered, knowing it wouldn't work.
"How can you be so self-centered? Did it occur to you that I already bought a lot of food for this? Now, what am I supposed to do? Just make it all and let it go bad?" Stella was already trembling, the same way she did every time she got angry.
"I just wanted to do something nice for the family. Since everyone is coming over, we could make some of the food you bought, and if we have leftovers, we can let them take home." Hera was looking down, trying to seem like she was sorry. In reality, after many years, she figured out that that was the quickest way to make her mom stop complaining.
"I didn't raise you to be this selfish! You are only thinking about yourself and not even considering others. Your cousins were away from home for a long time. They probably want homemade food, and I already planned the whole meal. How much did you pay in all that?" Stella rummaged through the bags.
Hera stopped for a second. She couldn't remember where she put the receipt. If she forgot to get it, or if it was in her pocket, she would be fine.
"Hera! How could you spend so much money on this?" Stella gasped.
Of course, Hera wasn't even sure why she got hopeful. Things always worked like that with her mom.
"When your dad wakes up, we are going to have a long talk about financial responsibility, missy!" Stella said before stomping back to the kitchen.
Hera sighed and started to look for something to eat again. She was thinking about a sandwich, but now, she needed something sweet.
When her dad woke up, there was more scolding. Eridan didn't want to tell Stella about the money he borrowed. Hera knew that and stayed silent during most of it. Only saying 'I'm sorry' now and then.
After that, the three set up the table for the whole family. The homemade dishes stayed in the center, with the pastries functioning as a decoration to cover the spots with no food. When they were done, it looked like a gaudy banquet, but Stella had a big approving smile on her face.
A song suddenly started playing on the television. Eridan pulled Stella into a hug and started to slow dance to it. It was the song they played at their wedding. Hera just watched them for a while from the corner of the room.
Eridan had thick arms and a big belly, but it was mostly brawn. Working in the wood shop and cutting the trees himself would do that to anyone’s physique. His short golden hair was already starting to gray, but he still had his charm and that big smile that make it seem like everything would turn out great.
Stella used to be very thin but had put on some weight after having Hera. Unlike most people, she embraced that. Her long blond hair was curled up today, giving her look a vintage feel. She had beautiful blue eyes that turned gray at the edges. Hera’s mom would always wear clothing that exposed some skin, be it in the chest, arms, or legs. She was truly beautiful, and the couple made each other extremely happy.
Little by little the guests arrived, and shortly after 1 P.M., the whole family was there. Hera never ceased to be surprised by how many people would come to these gatherings. Counting the partners of a few family members, there were 42 people inside the two-story house.
Thankfully, most of the family was fawning over her two cousins and left Hera alone. Even she went to congratulate them. Amelia was at a university famous for its medical program. Arthur, on the other hand, had just been accepted to a very prestigious college on an engineer scholarship.
Hera was genuinely happy for her cousins, she knew how hard they worked for it. She used her employee discount a few times, buying books to help them study for the enrollment test. Not only that, she always got happy when someone close to her would step towards their dream. It felt cathartic in a way.
The day went by, and soon the opening ceremony of the olympics began. Part of her family kept talking the whole way through it. But Hera simply tuned out the noise and focused on the presentation.
It was beautiful. Each country would go inside in two groups, the level ones, and the level tens. Because of the attribute difference, they only allowed civilians to take part in the competition. A few years back, the organizers thought the competition was getting boring in comparison with what explorers could do, so they added the level 10 division. It really increases the appeal to watch the event.
A level one civilian in the 55kg class who trained his whole life could lift almost 300kg, while the world record for a level ten was half a tonne. But there were very strict rules about it all. Skills were shared or banned, the attributes couldn't go over a certain number. To Hera, the whole system was a mess. Still, it was entertaining to watch.
The ceremony kept going, with a dance accompanied by a magic show made by two famous explorers. It was a singing duo called Bright Night and Dark Star. The duo would make the dancers appear and disappear. They turned the stage upside down and even made the dusk be followed by dawn, creating a new star in the sky.
Hera tried to use her [Observe] but only the information for the television appeared. She really wanted to know if that was illusion magic or a magic light.
For the finale, Dark Star made all the lights in the arena go out. A shot from a helicopter showed the whole city covered in darkness. The camera then shifted to the sky, where the stars danced around each other, spiraling towards the stage where Bright Night was. They gathered in a ball in front of her. When the sky was completely dark, all the stars on the stage flew out towards the crowd and stopped just by their chests. With a flourish, Bright Night sent all the stars back to the sky, giving back the light for the whole city.
Hera was mesmerized. It was already impressive when she had no idea how they did it. But now, she had a silly smile on her face just by thinking about the elemental affinities the duo could have.
With the presentation over, the president of Jamaica, where the olympics were happening, gave a speech Hera kept eating and talking with her family, her aunt Silvia was annoying her. She kept saying how Hera was lagging behind and soon she would be stuck in a dead-end job.
Only late at night, the last guest finally left. Yet, the day still wasn't over. Helping with the cleanup, Hera was doing the dishes while thinking about her decision. She was leaning towards giving up, at least for now. Mr. Greyson said that if she wanted, she could try again after some time. That could be a good idea.
"You need to pay more attention, this one is still dirty," her mom said, placing a plate inside the half-full sink.
Eridan was bringing some leftover food to the fridge when Stella asked him to stay.
"Hera, I want to talk to you. You can keep doing the dishes if you want, but pay attention," her mom demanded.
Hera wasn't in the mood to talk, but right now there wasn't a way out.
"Sure, what do you want to talk about, Mom?" she asked, not moving her eyes from the dishes.
"About you, look, I know you had a dream, and that didn't work. But you need to do something with your life. You can't stay forever at that bookstore. Are you looking for something else?" Stella said.
"No, Mom, I'm not. But I..." Hera replied but was cut off.
"See, why aren't you looking? You can't honestly be thinking that the bookstore is a good place to work. You need to do something, you need to act or even react to anything. Hera, you need to stop being such a pushover. Like today. How many times did you get up to fill other people's glasses?" her mom was raising her voice.
She always did that in those long speeches. Hera always hated it. Being loud wouldn't help get your point across.
"I was just being polite like you taught me," Hera replied, still scrubbing a plate.
"There is polite and then there is being a maid. You really need to start saying no. Doing what you want. Why don't you? Are you afraid of what people will say? C'mon, aren't you too old for that?"
Hera scrubbed harder, her fingers almost cracking the plate.
"My love, aren't you being too harsh on her?" Eridan asked.
"No, no, she needs a wake-up call. Everything in life is scary now? Are you afraid you will be let down again? Well, get over it! Life is hard, is pain, and is hardship. You have to pull through all that in order to find happiness. If you don't change now, you will be miserable for the rest of your life." Stella paused.
It took Hera everything she had not to snap back at her mom. Stella was the one always complaining and putting her down. She was the one who made her worry about what other people think. She was the one who kicked her when she was down on her 18th birthday.
"Well? Aren't you going to say something? Honestly, Hera, you need to do something, anything! Just stop being so plain!" Stella yelled.
Before Eridan could even call his wife out, Hera tossed the last plate in the sink, shattering it by accident
"Fine! Since you want me to do something. I'm going back home!" Hera said angrily.
"What are you talking about? This is your home," Stella scoffed.
"No, it's not, my home is in Brilansis, my friends, my job and my apartment are all there. This is just where I come to listen to you complain."
Hera stormed off, heading towards the guest bedroom. Quickly grabbing her things, she walked to the door.
"Hera, wait! Where are you going?" Eridan asked, rushing towards her.
"Home, Dad. I have training in the morning." Hera said without looking back. She knew she would cry the second she saw her dad's face.
"So, you are actually doing it?" Eridan asked.
"I am, and I'm going to prove to her that I don't need to change to become an explorer," Hera said putting her bag over her shoulder, "Don't worry. I'm calling a cab. I can't be near either of you right now."
She walked to the door of the room before realizing what she just said.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that," she said in a soft voice.
"Don't worry, I know. Give them hell, my Fourth Hero," Eridan said with a smile.
Hera looked back, twisting her nose.
"Dad, be serious. That was only cute when I was little."
Eridan laughed, Hera left the house and called a cab. She waited ten minutes outside before it arrived. Neither her dad, or her mother even tried to come out to talk. Just like it always happened. Stella wouldn't want to make a scene outside, and Eridan wouldn't come since it would make his wife angry.
Once Hera was inside the cab, she asked the driver to take her to the train station. Only after she left the street that she allowed the tears to flow. Dealing with her mother was always awful, and this time was no different. However, Hera made one single promise in the back of the car.
This would be the last time her mom would make her cry.
