40 - Level 3

  Leo kept looking at the women. All of them were staring at something that wasn't there and had big smiles on their faces, "Did you all just leveled up?"

  "Yeah, baby! Sweet, sweet level 3," Blue celebrated as she looked at her status.

  "What about the compendium? How do we access it?" Alex turned around.

  "Check your tablet. There is a compendium app. I guess it's already there. When I bought a compendium, the tablet downloaded it automatically. We might need to leave since we don't have Internet here," Hera replied, already opening her compendium to confirm it. There was a dungeon tab on the app and information about the Arcanist's Lookout.

  "Oh, I think I'm the one who got it," the Explorer smiled unsure if everyone would get the same rewards.

  "I got it too," Alex was staring at her tablet.

  "What? Really?" Hera asked.

  "Yeah. What about the rest of you?" Alex turned toward the rest of the group.

  Leo and Blue nodded, Bonnie, on the other hand, was looking at her tablet with wide eyes.

  "What's the matter?" Leo asked.

  "Check your wallets!" Bonnie gasped with a large smile.

  The group opened the virtual wallets. All of them had an extra 5,000 gold. Looking at the tablet, Hera also noticed a chest icon with a notification mark.

  Minor Elemental Essence Select

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Choosing the essence, select another window opened, asking what element she wanted. She could choose between fire, earth, wind, water, and spirit. Each essence could be used to enchant an item or as a catalyst for various magic devices. Unsure of what to pick, Hera just locked the tablet and opened her status.
  She had gained a total of 19 attribute points. 4 as a base, one more than her current level. That was the standard. Everyone, without exception, would gain at least that amount of attribute points when leveling up. She also had 15 bonus points.
  However, no one really knew for sure how the System gave extra points. There were some things that people assumed to be true, of course. Increasing the rank of a skill, or getting a new one, for instance, should give one bonus point each. Going to a new room for the first time should give another. Some people even said that completing System created quests also gave bonus points. Unfortunately, no one was ever able to confirm that.
  Either way, Hera still had her [Exponential Growth] to increase all her attributes at once. At first, each increase would ask for 3 points. Once her attributes reached 15, the cost to continue increasing changed to 4 points. This was different from everyone else, since people without the skill would only see that raise in cost every 10 points and not 5.
  Still, the Explorer was getting a great deal. With less than 16 points, as 3 were still left after maxing out her attributes, she gained a total of 24 attribute points. Someone without the Exponential Growth skill would get at most 8 extra attribute points.
  Even if Hera was still not stronger than Blue or Leo, as they now had 18 and 20 points in strength respectively, her overall ability was much stronger since there was no need for a dump stat. That's how people called an attribute that you would never increase in order to allow the rest to grow more.
  While looking at her status screen, Hera made a small changed. It was something anyone could do as long as they focused a bit. Starting now, every time she would gain a skill or rank up one of them, a +1 sign would appear after it. That would change to +2, or +3 as needed. In addition, the sign would be there until she leveled up. Only then it would vanish.
  Aside from that, she also had the skill be displayed with one difference. After the name, the rank number would appear to make it easier for her to understand her standing. This was both a way to make sure she could know how many attributes she would gain in the future, but also to quickly understand the power of her skills.
  Just to be safe, Hera checked if there were any changes in the one skill that allowed her to gain so many attribute points.
  While confirming her attributes, Hera heard something to her side.
  "The effect seems so weak. I can't feel anything," Blue huffed.
  "Yeah, we need to sleep, remember? We already have the extra power, but our mind needs to rest before adapting to it," Alex explained.
  "Oh, that's right. I'm gonna wake up massive!" Blue started to make poses as if she was a bodybuilder.
  "Everything on strength, why am I not surprised?" Bonnie said, rolling her eyes. Blue huffed and kept looking at her stats.
  "Why did you increase strength? If I remember it right, it was at 10. The way you fight, wouldn't it be better endurance or agility?" Leo asked.
  "Yeah, but I need some more strength to throw the things. I can't do it with the frogs, not just for the size but because they are too heavy. I'm going to raise it for a while, just to be sure my opponent's weight won't hinder me. And it wasn't all the points in strength, by the way. I just raised it by two."
  "That is actually a smart move. Then again, you can teach sign language to a gorilla so that it's not surprising," Bonnie finished speaking and saw the angry expression of the group staring at her, "Sorry, that went over the line," she looked down avoiding their gaze.
  "It's fine. Without you, this dungeon would have been much harder to complete. You get this free pass, but next time you won't be so lucky," Blue waved off the researcher.
  The group spent a few minutes talking about their stats and decided to leave the dungeon. Just like before, the platform started to rise towards the next floor as soon as someone stepped into the center of the spiral. Looking towards the ceiling, Hera saw a dense layer of fog. It looked like the big crystal was letting out some sort of steam. As they got closer, she used her pulse and confirmed that the fog was made of mana.
  The few seconds they stayed inside the fog was enough to recover all the mana that Hera had spent, but it also made the group start coughing. Thankfully, when the elevator reached the next floor, it sealed off the room below.
  Before heading out, the group spent an hour revisiting the rooms they left, making sure they didn't miss anything. All the traps had stopped working, and inside the rooms, there was nothing they hadn't seen before. The one odd thing is that everything seemed strangely quiet. Even the Claymen were gone.
  Deciding to leave, the group walked towards the exit. This time, there was no invisible wall blocking their path. Going up the staircase, the group made a single file once again. After a few minutes, they started hearing voices coming from above. Unsure what to expect, Hera grabber her handaxe. As they got closer, they met another group going down towards the dungeon. It was four people, and the one leading them was wearing what looked like plate mail and carried a longsword on his waist.
  "Oh, hello there. Are you guys the ones who opened the entrance this time?" the man asked.
  "Yep, that was us. What do you mean by this time?" Blue replied.
  Leo turned around to the controller, "Can you not go around telling everyone what we did? We have no idea who they are and what they want!" he turned towards the man, "No offense, but we don't know you."
  "None taken. Although it's pretty hard for someone to try something bad this close to the city, or in the first layer for that matter, you do need to be careful," the man said with a warm smile. He looked towards Hera's group and made a motion for his party to go back, "Since we are close to the entrance, it's easier to go up. This seems a bit too tight for two sets of people."
  Going back to the entrance, the groups introduced themselves. The man in plate armor was called Ryan. He had dark hair, goatee stubble, and was a fighter. The mage behind him was a beautiful Japanese woman with long black hair with blue tips. She wore a dark blue overcoat with a simple design and a pair of knee-high boots. Her name was Jane.
  On the mage's side, there was a tall man with dark bags under his green eyes. His name was Peter, and he wore a gray hoodie filled with several colored stains. He was clearly annoyed at the introduction and refused to talk about his role. Behind them, an archer was wearing a green cloak and leather armor. Looking at her was the same as looking at a fantasy book. She introduced herself as Felicity a Hunter, but never took off the hood of the cloak. The only thing Hera could see of her appearance was the sun-bleached curly hair.
  "If you don't mind me asking. Are you new here, or did you came to do a quest?" Ryan asked.
  "We were doing the dungeon quest, but here in Brinefront we are new, why?" Alex replied, raising one eyebrow.
  "Oh, sorry. It's part of our quest, you see. We were tasked with searching the books here and bring back pictures of the blueprints and the things we find inside there," Ryan replied.
  "Pictures?!" Bonnie shouted with wide eyes.
  "Yeah, why?" Jane crossed her arms while staring at Bonnie.
  "No, sorry... we could have taken pictures. Why didn't I think of that?" the researcher mumbled to herself.
  "Ignore her. She is freaking out for not thinking about something so obvious," Blue turned towards Bonnie, "If you want, we can go back there and take pictures. I wouldn't mind finishing the quest again."
  "Well, you can, but not today. This dungeon has a daily limit," Ryan said.
  "What?" Leo asked.
  "Yeah, that's why not many people come here. Aside from being a big place with a lot of backtracking, you can do this dungeon only once a day, and three times a week. Then, you have to wait for the reset. You guys got lucky. Usually, the first run after a reset receives a bonus reward, something like 1 000 extra gold in this case."
  "You said come here. Is there another dungeon people go to? Also, what was that about opening this place today?" Blue asked.
  "Oh yeah, there is the Frog Valley to the south or the Ant Burrow to the north. Both are way more efficient places to level up. Or farm levels as some would say," Ryan gestured in those loose directions, "The thing about the opening is the literal hole in the ground. Every day at night, the area around the staircase is covered with rock and grass. So someone has to dig it up. Once anyone does that, it stays open until midnight."
  "How are those places better for leveling up?" Leo asked.
  "Well, for one, they are quicker. You took what? Two or three hours to finish this one?" Ryan asked.
  "More like five," Alex sighed.
  "Yeah. For a first dungeon, that makes sense. Anyway, a first-time party can complete the Ant Burrow in one hour at most. A group that is used to it can do it in half an hour, and they get at least 500 gold per run just as a flat reward. This does not take into account all the drops. You can also do 20 runs on it before the daily reset. And there is no weekly limit. Well, technically it's 140, but you get what I mean," Ryan explained.
  "Really? Where is that one again?" Bonnie took a step closer to the man.
  "To the north of the city, you can either use the main gate or ask permission to use the north guard exit. You should buy a dungeon map. They are a bit pricey, but it's better than running around searching for the dungeons."
  If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
  "Thanks! I'll try to get one," Hera replied.
  "Unless all of your group can use spells or deal elemental damage. You should stay away from the Burrow. The ants are nearly impossible to kill with physical attacks. Go to the Frog Valley. You can only do it five times a day, but it's much safer, and the rewards are not so bad," Jane said.
  Hera quickly typed that advice on her tablet, making a note of it, "We'll keep that in mind. Thank you."
  "No problem, the Ruby Dragons are always here to help," Ryan said proudly, showing a red dragon painted on his armor.
  "Is that your organization?" Alex asked.
  "No, we are all from different ones. This is just the name of our party. Don't you guys have a party name?"
  Hera and her friends shook her head.
  "Oh, well, you should! That way, your group can start having some renown. People might even begin to request you guys for quests. That's how we got this one," Ryan opened a big smile, but the rest of his group seemed less enthusiastic about the name.
  Saying their farewells, Ryan and his group left towards the dungeon. Hera and the group decided to rest a bit before going back to town. They spent over five hours inside there, and there was still a two-hour walk back. Before anything Bonnie went down towards the dungeon again, she came back a few minutes later, confirming that she wasn't able to enter it for 24 hours.
  They grabbed the rations they had bought and had a meal while looking at the area, Leo kept cycling his mana using the ruins, and rest kept discussing spell ideas. After about half an hour, they felt ready to go back to town. However, Leo felt he was close to something, so they waited around some more. They all cycled their mana, taking advantage of the surrounding area to increase it as much as possible.
  Another hour passed before Leo gasped, saying he had unlocked his mana stat. Now, all they needed to do was start working on some spells. They were happy and thankful as it was already starting to darken. Getting ready to leave, the group climbed out of the crater, heading towards the road. The moment they left the forest, a honeyed voice came from the path.
  "Oh, it seems even you found this place."
  Looking towards who was speaking, Hera saw a familiar dark-haired woman with chestnut skin and a red bindi between her eyes.
  "Anaya, you bitch!" Blue yelled, walking towards the woman.
  Blue stomped towards Ayana, trying to grab her by the collar, but her target was quick on her feet, sidestepping and moving back, almost toying with the controller.
  "Now, is that a way to greet a friend?" Anaya said with a smile.
  "Since when are we friends? You left us to die in the test!" Blue yelled, trying to grab Anaya once more.
  Anaya kept dodging Blue while talking, "You were never going to die. At most, you would have failed the test. Besides, you are already here. So you passed even without my help."
  "Help? You are the reason Bonnie had to leave. Your little stunt could have made us seriously hurt!" Alex moved towards Anaya to help Blue but was stopped by Leo.
  "It's not worth it, Alex. Blue, you too, let it go."
  The controller turned around to face Leo," Are you seriously telling me to forgive her?"
  "Of course not, but what is done is done. All we can hope for is never to see her again."
  Blue clicked her tongue, "Fine, get the hell out of our way before I strangle you," she said to Anaya.
  "Oh? Is that a threat? You do know how seriously the Guild takes death threats, don't you? Maybe I should report this and be sure to have your license revoked. We can't have people who would harm others in here now, can we?"
  Blue stared at her. Even after everything Anaya had done, she still wanted to play the victim?
  "Now, I could be more lenient towards that, as long as you apologize, of course," Anaya smiled in a way that made Hera's blood boil.
  "Dream on, you snake," Blue barked.
  "You say like I'm asking you to do something horrible," Anaya replied, walking past the group.
  "It is horrible. I rather go back to the city doing a handstand and licking the floor than apologize to you," Blue kept looking at Anaya the entire time, ready for anything she might try.
  "It's a shame. Janna had some interesting ideas for us. She will be very disappointed with you if we can't work together."
  Blue huffed and stormed off towards the city. Leo and Alex quickly followed her, but Bonnie and Hera walked more carefully, still wary of Anaya.
  "Bye. I see you around town," Anaya said as they were leaving.
  The group spent some time walking in silence. Trying to break the tension, Hera asked, "Is that thing about threats real?"
  "Kind of, I don't think just her word against ours would do anything. But the Guild takes threats very seriously. They say it's because we have ways of actually following through with it. I mean, we are killing things all the time, and we are strong enough to do it. And if we are being honest, no one can really tell what happens inside a dungeon," Alex's feet were still stomping the ground, but with less force now.
  "Yeah, but there is a whole process. You need evidence, interrogations, and a complete investigation of the threats. What happened there wouldn't mean anything," Leo added while looking at his tablet.
  "I wouldn't be surprised if she already had part of the investigation done. That bitch looks like the type that has dirt on everyone, even if it's all forged," Blue kicked a rock that went tumbling down the path.
  "Don't be like that. We are all on your side. If she starts something, we can call for backup," Hera tried to cheer up the controller.
  "Yeah, who would help us?" Blue replied.
  "Well, for starters, we can ask the people who watched our test. You know they had cameras seeing us. That's how the organization could see our talents. We can also ask Mr. Greyson, Helena, and maybe even Tiffany to talk about her. Worst-case scenario, we can go to her school and see what people think about her. Since she's like this now, I doubt it is something new. After getting some information, we can use it to fight back and then even press Frostbite and the New Dawn corporation to cut ties with her," as Alex spoke, the rest of the group stared at her with wide eyes.
  "Holy crap. You put a lot of thought into that," Hera said.
  "Seriously, remind me never to be on your bad side," Leo said, taking a step away from the explorer.
  "Yeah, how long have you been making that plan?" Bonnie asked.
  "Well... ever since the test, to be honest. It felt like we could need to have a way to deal with her. But it's just an idea. I haven't searched for anyone or anything like that," Alex explained, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
  "Still, that is a lot, and it's a good idea. Next time I'm looking for some help to get someone off my back, I'm coming straight to you," Hera laughed.
  With a lighter tone, the group walked back to the city, arriving a few minutes before sundown. Before going to the Guild, they looked for something to eat. It was early for dinner, but having power bars for lunch could hardly be considered a meal. Only after that they went to the Guild to complete any quests they had and buy the map of the dungeons of the room.
  Unlike the general map, they had in their tablets. They needed to buy more specific and detailed maps. The options varied, from maps with localization of resources and creatures to charts that showed the flow of mana or maps that could help with quests.
  Of the ones about dungeons, they could buy three types. A basic one that just said the localization of the dungeons around the city. That would go for 200 gold. The second option was a map with all the dungeons within a 30 km radius of the town, along with some information about the common monsters and dangers inside each dungeon. There were five dungeons in total looking at this map, but it would cost 2,000 gold.
  The last one was a map with all the dungeons in the room, a total of 15 dungeons, and not just the basic information on each one. The monsters, their weaknesses, the traps, the quest, and how to beat it, even the possible item drops. It was an extensive, in-depth guide. But it would cost 20,000 gold. They also had the option of getting that guide for a single dungeon, but that would vary from 1,000 to 2,000 gold, and the value of the pack wouldn't change even if they already had some information.
  "This is all too expensive. Maybe we should just ask around online," Blue pulled up her tablet.
  "We can, but what guarantee will we have that the information is correct? What if someone doesn't know what they are talking about or just wants to reduce the number of explorers around?" Bonnie was still looking at the prices of the maps, trying to figure out the best option.
  "Yeah, I don't mean to be a downer, but we shouldn't trust everything that we see online, and since this can affect our wellbeing. We should get the information from a reliable source, even if it's more expensive," Leo gently lowered Blue's tablet before the Controller could delve into her search.
  Although the price was a bit much, the group agreed to buy the 2,000 gold map for the nearby dungeons and the complete information about the Frog Valley. Gemma, the Guild clerk, explained that the information could be downloaded for up to ten people. It would also be linked to their bracelets, so even if they changed tablets at some point, they could still get the maps. Because of the steep price, most groups bought one and shared among themselves.
  Thanking Gemma, Hera and her friends went back to the hotel. Even though it was still early, the group felt their legs heavy. It would be nice to rest for the evening. The first thing Hera wanted to do was take a shower. This time she got in first before Blue had the chance to flood the bathroom.
  After the shower, Hera lay down on the bed and turned on the TV. Her streaming service still worked inside the MAZE. Picking a show she already had watched a thousand times before, Hera opened the map on her tablet and started to read about the dungeons.
  According to the Internet, the Ant Burrow was a day's travel to the north. As the name implied, they would have to face ants, from workers to soldiers, then the queen and her guards. The place was rich in minerals, and it was classified as a small dungeon. Hera found it odd since anthills were supposed to be huge, but maybe the system changed it to make it more manageable.
  Using the information they bought, she started reading about the Frog Valley and comparing to what she found online. The hope was to find a website that was trustworthy enough to avoid spending so much money on this kind of thing in the future. Especially since these kinds of maps should get more expensive the deeper she went into the MAZE.
  The Frog Valley was in a direct line to the south. They could reach it in about four hours. It was a place where the old habitants of Brinefront would go to worship the frogs, who were considered the guardians of the city. Aside from the types of frogs she had already seen, there were also a few different ones and a frog king. The quest was about getting rid of the poisonous frogs that were destroying the valley's balance.
  That was available online, but the actual descriptions and details of the frogs, the layout of the dungeon and the possible traps could only be found in the map sold by the Guild. It was a bit odd, but considering the Guild could control the amount of information about the MAZE that was shared on Earth it wasn't that much of a surprise.
  Glancing at the details about Arcanist’s Lookout, Hera found nothing new about it. Since they had completed the dungeon already, they had more information than both the online map and the one they bought for 2,000 gold.
  There were two other dungeons on the map. The underwater temple was created to praise the shrimp that saved the city. The quest was about getting rid of invaders in the temple and dealing with the fungus that grew there. There was a note on the dungeon saying that it required swimming. Hera was happy that kind of information was also available, although she had mixed feelings about it being behind a paywall.
  Finally, the last one was a new dungeon. Someone discovered it less than twenty years ago. It was called the Floating Lake, and apparently, it was on the ceiling of the cave. To reach it, they would need to go to the northwest until they found a pathway on the cavern's stone walls. Then climb all the way to the top and take the sky bridge towards the entrance. Both of these dungeons were marked as not suitable for beginners.
  Hera wasn't even sure they needed that warning. Cleaning fungus off a temple should be very complicated, and they would need special gear for it. If regular mold was already dangerous, she could only imagine how magic filled fungi could be.
  The floating lake seemed like too much work just to get there. They would have to climb the entire wall and then move just under the ceiling. Hera never had any problems with heights, but just climbing to the top of this cave would take a couple of days. Sleeping that high up didn't seem like something fun to do.
  Having read all the information about the dungeons, Hera opened the browser on her tablet. She wanted more information about her [Treasure Map], and about the elemental essence select. Before she could get too deep into her research, Leo asked to meet her through a text. Curious about what the hunter could want, Hera quickly went to his room and knocked on the door.
  "Who is it?" Leo's voice rang from the room.
  "It's Cygnus the golden. Or it could be the person who you just asked to come here," Hera joked.
  "Crap, hang on," Some noises came from the room, and a few moments later, he opened the door.
  "Were you seriously not expecting me?" Hera asked.
  "You didn't reply. I thought you were taking a shower," Leo had clearly got dressed in a hurry. His shirt was inside out, and his fly was open.
  "My bad, but for the record, if you called me here for this, the answer is no. I don't crap where I eat," Hera said.
  "What are you talking about?" Leo asked, Hera simply pointed down, showing the hunter the situation in his pants, "No, not that. Never that," he turned around and closed the zipper.
  "I know that I said it first, but you don't have to be that insulted by the idea," Hera rolled her eyes, holding back a smile. It was fun to tease the Hunter.
  "No, I mean, you are gorgeous. I just will never think about dating you. No, wait, I mean, you are like an older sister. Not that I'm calling you old or anything. I mean, you are, but I don't mean it like that."
  Hera couldn't hold back her smile anymore, "You do realize that we are all doing this on purpose, right?"
  Leo let out a defeated sigh, "Yeah, honestly, Mark needs to come soon. I don't know how much more I can take."
  "I'll ask the girls to tone it down. Now, why did you call me?" Hera said, giggling.
  "Right, come in," Leo walked in and sat by the bed. Hera grabbed a chair in front of him, "So, remember the tournament that I was in to join the coalition?"
  Hera nodded.
  "Yeah, I got in fourth place, and they gave me a choice of skills to pick. I chose a taming skill. And I wanted to see if you can help me find one of those small squeaky frogs. I need to tame something to get the skill, and then I can have a partner for my hunts. I wanted to ask you because of your Explorer item. It might help a lot, but I know it has a long cooldown." Leo explained.
  "Oh, that's all? Sure, I'll help. To be honest, I'm having some trouble using Yarnball for that. I keep thinking that I'm going to waste it and end up never using it. We can get the girls and go look for it tomorrow."
  "Actually, would you mind if it were just us? Alex might freak out if she sees that I'm getting a frog, and Bonnie has to make money. Blue... well, I'm not sure she can stay still long enough for me to do my thing."
  "Ok, but that is a surprise. I didn't expect you to want to hunt with pets, Leo."
  "To be honest, me neither. But when I went to check my status for the first time, it showed a rare skill. I always thought it was useless, but maybe I was wrong."
  "What skill?"
  "It's called [Unwavering Command]. It can increase the attributes of my allies by 50% for a minute. But the catch is, it only works if I have the absolute trust of my partners. I tried using it with my family, even with you guys, but it never worked. Then, when I read the taming skill, I realized that it might work. Among the skills related to it, there is one that increases the trust between the pet and the master. So that might work."
  "Well, maybe. Just don't be sad if you can't use it right away. Do you wanna try it tomorrow?" Hera asked.
  "I don't know. Let's see what everyone want's to do tomorrow first."
  Hera nodded just as a text came on her tablet. Blue was asking if anyone wanted to go out for drinks. It had been a while since Hera went to a bar. Replying yes, she and Leo left to meet the rest of the group.
