37 - The Arcanist Lookout

  After a few moments, the rest of the group joined the explorer. She told them about the map evolution and that she saw the doorway with a corridor. Excited about the possibility of entering the tower, they all started to dig towards the empty pocket that Hera saw.

  It didn't take very long before they broke through the layer of earth. Blue was the one who managed to make a small opening, allowing her to see a stairway and the door that Hera found.

  Bonnie rushed towards her, thinking about what would be inside a mage tower.

  "Let me see," the Researcher said, pushing Blue aside from the opening.

  With the extra weight, the ground gave in, making the two of them fall inside the hole, hitting the stone staircase underground. Although the fall could barely be called that as they only went a couple of steps down.

  "Are you guys ok?" Hera asked, her eyes trailing after the opening.

  "I'm not," Blue said, shoving Bonnie away from her, "The genius over here fell on top of me."

  "Sorry, I got excited," Bonnie quickly got up.

  Hera jumped down to the freshly unearthed tunnel and inspected the entrance a few steps below the pair. It was small, forcing people to crouch to go through.

  Arcanist tower entrance

  Area type: Dungeon

  A door that leads to the remains of the arcanist tower.

  Over time, the leftover experiments that happened inside the tower changed and transformed into dangers that protect the surviving structure of the tower.

  "We found a dungeon," Hera said with a smile.

  Moments later, the group was sitting in a circle in the middle of the crater near the hole they had just created. Everyone had their tablets open as they compared notes.

  "Let me say what I have from class first. If anyone has something else, we add to our notes," Alex looked around, getting nods of approval from the group, "Dungeons are similar to rooms, in the way that we pass through something to enter them. However, unlike rooms, they have their own rules and structures. In contrast, the rooms follow the laws of the world more closely. An example would be that we can't breathe underwater, but inside a dungeon, we might be able to do that."

  Seeing the Assassin gave an opening, Leo added, "Most dungeons are private areas. Even if two groups enter, they will be sent to different places. The dungeon will be the same, but with no other groups to interfere. In some cases, various groups can join the same area. Those are called shared dungeons, raids, or battlefields, depending on the specifics. This doesn't seem to be the case here. If it were, the area type would be different,"

  "I have something else," Bonnie said, "Inside a dungeon, it's common to find traps and hazards made to stop people from advancing. There will also be monsters and other creatures. If we kill them, they dissolve, and can even drop items. However, if we leave the dungeon, the whole area resets."

  "There is also the story," Hera was reading something that Helena explained to her.

  "Story?" Leo asked.

  "Yeah, all dungeons have a story, a reason why they are there, and why everything inside them is there, like the group test. We were inside a castle with the remains of the king's army. They were inside the castle because the king was holding them there. If we can understand the what and why of the place, we might have an easier time going through it. Also, this story can be completely made up, or something that truly happened," Hera explained.

  "Wait, so we can see the past inside a dungeon?" Blue frowned.

  Hera shook her head, "Sort of but not really. Dungeons that are based on the past, or Historical Dungeons, as they are called, are kind of like historical movies. They do show things that did happen, but a more… polished version, so to speak. Think about war movies. They cut a lot of content to fit the runtime. Same thing with a Historical Dungeon. Some of what happened will be shortened, or shifted for a better experience."

  "But… who does that edit?" Blue asked.

  "Honestly. I have no clue," Hera sighed, "Maybe it's just the MAZE, or the system. Just like dungeons that have a fake story. They just make it… for some reason."

  As she spoke, another thought crossed her mind. Peaches, the green apple slime that helped her during her Explorer test, was a Guide. Those Guides should exist in every room according to the skill she gained after completing a hidden task in the test. It felt strange for those Guides to exist just for answering questions. Especially if they had full-blown personalities like Peaches.

  Maybe the Guides were the ones who created and edited the dungeons.

  Snapping out of her thoughts, Hera turned back to the group, trying to pretend she wasn't thinking about something else, "Does that make sense?"

  "Yeah," Alex nodded.

  Aside from Bonnie, they all had witnessed the figure of the skeleton king. If there was a story here, it could have a hidden reward as well.

  "Ok, and how about the loot? Dungeons are said to be amazing places to find items and make money. How are we splitting that?" Bonnie asked.

  "I guess the gold we can split it evenly. And items we don't want, we just sell and split the money later. The problem is the things we may want," Leo crossed his arms.

  "What if we do a finder's keepers rule?" Blue suggested.

  "Bad idea. If we find something too valuable or too interesting, someone might try to get it in the middle of a fight," Alex shook her head.

  "We could draw straws or something random like using dice," Leo shrugged.

  "I don't like that idea. My luck is terrible," Bonnie looked back at the entrance of the dungeon. She had a feeling it was getting smaller but she couldn't be sure.

  "What if we do an auction?" Hera suggested.

  "Between us?" Blue asked.

  "Yeah, like the one who wants the item buys from the rest of the group. I used to do that in a game when I was younger."

  After thinking for a moment, the group nodded, approving her suggestion.

  "I wasn't expecting you to be a gamer, Hera," Alex said.

  "I'm not one, not really. I played a bit because I could look around the maps. It's been a few years since the last time I used a controller."

  "Ok, but before we go in, I think we should eat. Also, Alex and Leo, keep cycling your mana with the walls, try to unlock your mana stat," Bonnie said, picking up some of the rations she had brought.

  "That's a good idea. We are going into a place that used to belong to a mage. I'm guessing that mana will be used a lot down there," Hera nodded, already opening her power bar.

  "But couldn't mana be a problem too? What if there are traps that only trigger if you have mana," Blue turned to the explorer.

  "Well, then we have to deal with the traps. I mean, getting the mana stat is something we all need, I'm not sure if staling for one dungeon would be worth it. Besides, as far as I know, no explorer stays without mana past level 4. So we need to learn how to deal with that kind of trap anyway," Bonnie replied.

  Agreeing with that idea, the group ate and spent another 30 minutes using the walls to increase their mana. During that time, Alex unlocked her mana, making Leo the only one without it.

  Going down to the entrance, Hera went in first, spearheading the group. They descended a long, dark stairway. Luckily, Bonnie had figured out how to use the light spell that Helena sent to Hera. If it weren't for that, they would need to use torches or flashlights.

  Hera thanked her friend for using the spell. Even if it had a low mana consumption rate, it wasn't small enough not to matter. Hera knew that the more the researcher stayed with the light on, the fewer attacks she would be able to do.

  After walking down for a few minutes, Hera started to worry that there was a different way to get inside the dungeon, and they were wasting their time. Almost as a reply, a system notification popped in front of her.

  "Did you all get that?" Blue turned to the group.

  They all confirmed and looked forward. There was a small glint of light a few meters down. Taking a deep breath, Hera moved towards the light, chuckling a bit to herself.

  "What's the matter?" Alex whispered.

  "We are literally going to the light at the end of the tunnel," Hera replied.

  "Really?" Bonnie rolled her eyes.

  Blue started giggling with her friend but was quickly shushed by Leo, "We need to say quiet. We don't know what's down there."

  Despite his scolding, it obvious the man was holding back some laughter.

  They kept moving down until the area after the stairway opened into a large circular room, with small globules of blue light floating near the 5 meter high ceiling. The floors were made of the same light gray stone that they saw outside.

  However, there was one big difference, a spiral pattern that was under their feet. With various shapes and lengths, the rocks were likely carved out to form this odd shape that reminded Hera of a whirlpool. And in a sense, it felt like this was giving some hint about how to use mana properly.

  Maybe this was the whole point of the dungeon. To teach people to use magic.

  As they got closer to the center of the room, Hera could see four other doors around the chamber. Not only that, but with each step she took toward the middle, the globules of light lowered.

  She made a motion for her friends to stop as there was something else going on. The closer they got to the center of the room, the closer the light would be to the doors, but if she took a step back, the glowing spheres would go back up. However, moving from the sides didn't change the height of the dancing lights.

  "Ok, I have no idea if going in the middle of the room is a good or bad idea," Hera turned to the group.

  "Me neither, it could help. But it could trigger an alarm or something," Bonnie looked around, trying to find some information.

  "Leo, try walking, maybe it's mana sensitive," Blue suggested.

  The man walked by Hera, but the effects were the same.

  "Should we just go back and try to buy a compendium of this place?" Alex said.

  The group nodded. There was no reason to risk themselves like this. They walked back towards the door they had just left, but an invisible wall blocked Alex, who was in the rear.

  "Crap."

  "What's the matter?" Bonnie asked.

  "There is a wall here. We can go out, but.. check it for yourselves."

  Do you wish to leave the Arcanist Lookout?

  By leaving the dungeon, you will forfeit the first completion rewards. In addition, your next attempt will start with the alarm system of the tower already active.

  Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

  Bonnie let out a sigh, "So, not only we lose gold, but we also would have more problems if we want to come back here?"

  "What do you guys think? I want to see what's around here. If we get hurt or we see it's too dangerous, we can leave. But I don't want to run away without even trying," Alex stared at the four doors around the room.

  "Same here," Blue nodded, already taking a step closer to the rest of the group.

  "Hera? What about you?" Bonnie asked.

  "What? Sorry, my mind was someplace else."

  Leo looked at Hera with a confused expression, "Really? How can you think about something else right now?"

  "It's not something else. I was just thinking, could this be a way to trigger a hard mode?"

  Blue waved away the notification, "Hard mode, is that a thing?"

  "Yeah, in class, Mr. Greyson mentioned it in passing, and I asked Helena about it later. All dungeons have a harder version. As far as I know, the rewards are at least five times better, but the difficulty rises a lot. The first struggle is to find how to trigger it. Some require you to finish the quest in a specific time, while others ask you to trigger certain events. Since we are just on the first layer, this could be more straightforward."

  Bonnie's eyes were glowing with the information, "Five times? Like 25 000 gold? Should we go for it?"

  Hera shook her head, "I don't think that is a good idea. Not now at least. We have no way of knowing how hard it will be. Even with a smaller reward, we might find a lot of exciting things here. After all, it was an arcanist tower."

  After thinking for a moment, Bonnie gave up the notion of pushing for the hard difficulty. It was stupid to try to beat the hard mode of a dungeon as their first ever dungeon, anyway.

  Focusing on the surrounding area, Hera tried to use her [Observe] in the room. The only things with names were the lights, and they were simply called floating lights. Sadly, her [Inspect] gave no information about them. The explorer told the group to split up and look at the doors before deciding where they should go.

  Hera herself walked to the one on the left. All the while, everyone made sure not to get close to the center of the room. Each door was wooden, with iron handles and no windows. As Hera looked at the disposition, something clicked in her mind.

  "Bonnie, doesn't this look like a pentagram? If we make a line connecting the doors."

  The researcher looked around, confirming what Hera said. She then picked her tablet and started to go through her notes.

  "Yeah, it looks like a pentacle. In magic, they use it for energy gathering, and to represent the five primal elements: water, fire, earth, air, and spirit. There is even a specific order. The north point would be spirit or magic, the east water, the southeast fire, the southwest earth, and the west air."

  "Ok, so we came from the point. So that's spirit. What is this door then?" Blue pointed at the door in front of her.

  Bonnie rubbed her eyes, "If, and only if, you are right that we came from the spirit door, that would be fire, but the pentagram can be in any orientation. We might have come from the Earth's point. The entrance was underground, after all."

  "Or maybe air, because the exit was built before it turned into ruins," Alex approached the exit, trying to feel the wind.

  "It can also be water because of the room itself or fire for whatever reason. We don't have enough information to figure out," Bonnie huffed.

  Silence fell on the group. They had no idea that the entrance of a dungeon would already give them trouble deciding where to go. Hera looked around, trying to see if there were any markings on the floor or in the area. Sadly, there was none.

  "Since we have no way to figure it out, does it matter which one we choose?"

  The whole group stared at Blue, who just spoke.

  "What? I mean seriously. Does it matter? Like Hera said, this is the first layer. Yes, it is dangerous, and yes, we can get hurt, but remember what Mr. Greyson said?" Blue raised one finger and started speaking in a bad Scottish accent.

  "When ye go to the first layer of the MAZE, ye will find dangers, but the place is more of a beginner area. Ye have some leeway to fail without getting too hurt. Later on, even opening a wrong door can get ye killed," she dropped the accent, "So like, what is the point of bashing our heads against the wall to figure out what's what? Let's just go, and we will find out."

  The group exchanged some glances with each other for a moment.

  "Fine, as much as I hate to admit the muscle head is right, sometimes overthinking is bad. Someone just pick a door, and we will go," Bonnie was the one to break the silence.

  Hera got worried when she saw Bonnie's expression. Just agreeing with Blue made it look like the researcher was taking some awful tasting medicine. She couldn't help but imagine if her friends would ever stop fighting.

  "If no one wants, can I pick the door then?" Alex said.

  Everyone agreed with that since in the end Blue was right. It didn't matter the door they picked since they couldn't find anything out about the place.

  "Ok, so let's go through the one Bonnie is in front of," she said, walking towards the researcher.

  While making sure not to get to the center of the large entrance, everyone moved to the door in question. Pushing it open, a 500 meter long hallway was revealed. There were other floating lights in the area, but those stayed still in a single place.

  The corridor itself wasn't much different from the center room. It was made of the same pale gray stone that seemed to be carved into odd shapes. Mostly lines going from the central room to somewhere. After a few minutes of walking, the group finally reached the end of the hallway, where they could see a doorway leading to the right.

  Getting closer, Hera could see that there was no actual door there, just the frame. Inside it, there was a large rectangular room with several books and tables spread around. Inside, they saw no creatures or traps.

  As a matter of fact, the place looked like a library. Excited, Bonnie rushed in and picked up one of the books on the table. Yet, the moment the Researcher touched the tome, it turned into dust in her hands.

  Leo quickly approached the woman and grabbed her arm, "Bonnie! Stop doing that. This could have been a trap!"

  "But it wasn't. Everything is fine," Bonnie replied.

  "That is not the point, Bonnie!" Hera nearly shouted, "I know you are excited or whatever, but you need to be careful. I don't want to have to carry you to the healers again because you were stu...." the Explorer paused her phrase, remembering what happened when the researcher woke up in the infirmary and quickly changed her words, "Just because you are reckless. Let's make sure we can touch those things before you go picking them up."

  Bonnie looked down, "You are right. It won't happen again. I'll make sure not to put the group in danger."

  Blue rolled her eyes, "Yeah, she's still dense as a brick. We are more worried about you getting hurt than anything else."

  Bonnie stared at the Controller, then at the rest of the group, her face turning red.

  "Sorry, I'm just not used to this. Thanks."

  The group started to look around the room. Large bookshelves covered the walls. All of them had white tomes and books. In the set of tables, some of the books were open, and there was parchment, quills, and dried up ink bottles enough to stock a small store.

  At the back of the room, there was an ornate desk with a larger blueprint. It looked like the design to create something large that would cover the entire tower. Sadly, it was written in a language that no one in the group could understand. Even the alphabet was completely alien.

  After some time, they agreed that the room was trap free and proceeded to check the books. They weren't able to read a single one, aside from the fact that they were all in a different language, when they tried to pick them, the books turned into ash.

  The ones on the shelves were different. Instead of vanishing, they were extremely heavy. Even with the whole group trying, they weren't able to make it budge. Almost as if they were part of the shelves themselves.

  They only tried a couple of books before giving up. There were way too many for them to check every single one. Hera was tempted to use Yarnball, just to make sure that they really couldn't get a single book. But it was too soon to use it. If she did, it would take days before she could activate her relic's ability once again.

  Making sure they weren't missing anything. The group looked at the door at the back of the room. It was a heavy steel door with various deadbolts and an iron wheel in the middle that seemed to push two blocks of white stone into the wall.

  Curious about what demanded such a secure door, Blue approached and started to open it. At the same time, Hera and the others stood by the door's side, ready to face whatever was inside. Blue unlocked the deadbolts and started to spin the wheel. When the two pieces of white rock became loose, the door opened abruptly. The Controller, as well as Alex and Hera jumped out of the way and let the iron hatch slam into the wall.

  However, since Blue was now facing the doorway, she felt a powerful gust of wind coming towards her. It was almost like being near a hurricane. The howling sound of the gale was making it difficult even to think. She sidestepped once more to be away from the door.

  The wind pushed the books and the papers that were on the tables, making all of them turn to dust. Suddenly, the entire library felt like it was on fire as the soot stopped them from being able to breathe properly. Even stranger was the fact that the wind wasn't able to push those particles away.

  "Go through the door, we need to get away from the ash," Bonnie yelled.

  Leo went in first, but he only managed to take a few steps. The wind was so strong that was making his feet slide through the floor. Blue grabbed him by the waist and started pushing. Seeing her friend, Hera did the same with the Controller. Soon they were in single file, all pushing the one in front of them. Luckily, Leo was the biggest one in the group, and together with his shield he could block more of the wind going to the women.

  Step by step, the group pushed through this new hallway, walking steadily towards another circular room.

  "When we get to the room, I'll stay in the middle until Bonnie can go to the wall," Leo tried to tell his friends of the plan, but the sound of the wind was so loud that it seemed like they were skydiving.

  The corridor barely had 20 meters, yet it took almost ten minutes to reach the end. The moment Leo stepped inside the circular room, he stopped feeling the wind. He looked back and saw Blue still being pushed back by the gust. Grabbing her hand, he pulled her towards him. As soon as her head crossed the threshold of the room, Leo yelled.

  "Grab Hera's hand, or she will go flying back!"

  The controller took another step and spun around, grabbing Hera's wrist and pulling her. Giving the same command to the rest soon, they were all inside this new area.

  After a brief moment to catch their breath, Leo asked. "Ok, any idea what is going on here, Bonnie?"

  The researcher looked around and put one hand in the hallway they just left.

  "This wind is only affecting the corridor. Maybe it's a way to keep people out."

  "So we just beat our first trap? All right!" Blue cheered.

  She was the only one cheering as the rest of the group turned around to see what was around them. This area was very similar to the entrance, but there were a few carvings around the walls. Not simple marks but a full blow wall to wall piece of art.

  Above the door they had just come through, there was a mage in long white robes with both arms raised, one to each side of the room. Following that, there was what looked like a representation of wind blowing. It started with a few leaves being carried, but as the carving continued, the wind became stronger and more violent. Trees falling, houses being torn apart, animals being carried by the wind. Until directly in front of the mage, there was a massive tornado ripping apart a castle.

  "That is not ominous at all," Alex stared at the castle.

  "Is it just me, or that thing seem to have eyes?" Hera pointed to the top of the tornado," Right there, above the tower, the engraving is deeper, or am I going crazy."

  "You know what, I think you're right. But it's creepy. It's like staring into a storm," Leo said.

  Bonnie walked closer to the carving, "That can be a problem. I read about things like that. Apparently, there are some creatures who are like the condensed form of the elements. Not like a fire-lizard of a wind bird, but sentient fire or wind. Those creatures are said to be very strong and easily require a mid-level party to deal with a single one."

  "But this is the first layer, there wouldn't be something like that here. Would there?" Alex turned to the Researcher.

  "I don't know. According to one of the town's legends, there was once a giant invasion here. The Devil Hunt was also something that went past layers, not to mention the great war," Hera kept looking around. Both sides of the carving were very different. The position of the leaves, the types of environment, even the houses that were being destroyed were unique.

  "One thing is being careful, but now you guys are just silly. This is not an invasion, much less something that leads to another layer. It's a dungeon, and being so close to the town, I doubt we are the first ones here. Can we stop worrying so much and keep going? If one of those sentient things shows up, we fight or run away," Blue crossed her arms.

  Even though Hera was worried about what could happen, she had to agree with the Controller. They were taking too much time in deciding what to do. During her test, most of her decisions were quicker, and she was alone.

  "Blue has a point. So don't think, just answer. Do we go through that door? Yes or no?" Hera said, moving closer to the center of the room.

  After a moment, the group agreed to keep going. They had already reached this far. Running away just because of a creepy drawing seemed like a waste. Hera opened the door leading to the next room and jumped to the side to avoid any possible wind. However, nothing happened. The door was open, and the path seemed clear.

  Walking in carefully, Hera moved towards the new room. For a moment, she thought she entered the wrong place. There was nothing magical in the area. Instead, rows and rows of clothes, drapes, and wrappers that were left hanging to dry filled the room. There wasn't a single tome, a single spellbook, a single table. In all effects, this was simply a laundry room.

  "Is this for real? All that for a place to dry some clothes?" Bonnie was looking around.

  "Does anyone have a coin?" Alex asked.

  "A coin?" Blue tilted her head.

  Alex smiled, "Yeah, we need coins to use the laundromat, right?"

  "Oh no, Hera is starting to rub off on you," Blue rolled her eyes.

  "Hey! I can hear you," Hera objected.

  "Guys, shut up. I think I heard something," Bonnie was walking toward the middle of the room, looking at the clothes.

  Hera stepped closer, trying to see if there was anything in the area. Suddenly, she felt something wrapping around her legs and pulling her up, making the explorer fall face-first on the ground. Hera quickly spun around, grabbing Iris to face her assailant.

  Hovering a few meters above her, there was a long white and green scarf. When Hera managed to understand what she was seeing, the cloth jolted towards Alex, warping around her head. Blue and Leo hurried towards the assassin, helping her remove the thing from her head. While they separated the creature and Alex, Hera activated her [Observe].

  Minor Wind Elemental (Prototype)

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  "That's a monster!" Hera yelled.
  The elemental let go of Alex and started hovering above the group once again. Hera wrapped Yarnball onto her Chakram and threw at the creature, using the string to pull her weapon back. At the same time, Bonnie started lobbing spells towards it. The rest kept trying to hit it with whatever they could, but to no avail, the monster was too nimble.
  The Researcher rushed towards the front of the room and started to cast her Cold Bomb, "Distract it. If I can freeze it, maybe it will drop!"
  The group split off and did what they could to keep the monster near Bonnie. After a couple of seconds, she launched the spell towards it. The elemental was fast, but the Cold Bomb was large enough to hit part of it.
  With part of its form frozen, the creature wasn't able to hold its height. It descended into the ground, and the group went towards it, ripping it apart until it stopped moving. As it did, it dissolved away, vanishing as if it never existed.
  Hera was on the other side of the room and, instead of going towards the creature, used her [Observe] once again. All pieces of clothing in the area had the same name.
  However, near the back of the room, there was something that looked different. Hera approached a drying rack with a beautiful green sash with a white border and runes inscribed on it. The name was also different from the rest. Hera quickly activated her [Inspect] to be sure it wasn't another creature.
