Dan took the last shift so he found himself waking up just a bit before 4 am due to his alarm. It was good that the world they found themselves in seemed to be following the same time format as Earth. They did have to reset their clocks and their phones' to the right time by referencing a pocket watch that one of the passengers had, but other than that, everything seemed to be going alright.
Dan made sure to finish his morning routine, wear his captain uniform and then make his way to the bridge before 4 am to not make his chief officer wait. Walking to the bridge with his hand on the walls and railings, he took a deep breath from the refreshing air, something he could never get enough of.
"Good morning Robert," he greeted his chief officer as he entered the bridge, "Anything happen?"
He wasn't woken up by alarms blaring so he guessed that nothing big happened, but many different things could change that might not lead to that.
"Morning," Robert replied as he put down an empty coffee cup in his hand, "It was a quiet night. Though, Freddie did say that Keith seemed to be a bit out of it when he came to replace her."
"Oh? What do you think it might have been?" Dan questioned. Keith was a capable woman, someone he trusted to get things done when push comes to shove. But the current situation they found themselves in wasn't something anyone could handle. It simply was too much.
"I don't know," Robert just shook his head, "Freddie said that she didn't say much, just said that everything was alright and went to her room."
"I'm sure that if it's something worth mentioning she will bring it up later when she wakes up," Dan said. He trusted his crew to have the best of the ship in mind, so she would probably come to him about it if it had to do with that.
"Anyway," he continued, "Go rest for now, no need to hurry back here, we have nothing to do for today, so you can get a bit of a shut eye."
"I'm going to take you up on that offer," Robert nodded, "See you later then."
Saying goodbye to his old friend, Dan found himself alone on the empty bridge and his mind began wandering. As he told Robert, they decided to take it easy today, they most likely were just going to wait for nightfall so they could maybe send someone to one of the shoreside villages and see what they could find from there. Maybe even find something about what the islanders claimed.
Other than that, going around trying to find what was wrong with their cameras might also be a good thing to work on. Dex did check the day before, but he came up with nothing. He said that everything should be alright, but for some reason, it wasn't. Just one more thing to add to the list of wacky messes this new world sent their way, he guessed.
Dan didn't know how long he remained alone on the bridge, but eventually, just as the sky started getting the tiniest bit brighter, he heard footsteps coming closer. He turned his head to the door just in time to see William, his chief engineer, come in. The old man had always been an early riser, and Dan wasn't surprised that he was there that early.
"Morning Captain," He greeted, "How have things been?"
"Morning, and you know, it's boring. Fortunately I guess," he joked. A boring morning was a peaceful morning.
"That is fortunate," his old friend smiled back.
"What about you? How was your first night of sleep in this new world of ours?"
"It was great, I slept like a baby. Though I guess that has more to do with the system strengthening me and ridding me of my old aches than anything else."
"Same here," Dan nodded, "I guess that bit about the system making you stronger and healthier with each level wasn't just for nothing."
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Yes," William nodded, "I won't lie, all these system shenanigans were hard to believe at first, but with my class, skill and of course this body strengthening I had no choice but to believe."
Dan just nodded at that. The system was proving to be something way more than any of them could imagine. As he lost himself in thoughts, an idea came to mind as he looked at his old friend. He still didn't know about his engineer's class. Another part of him also realised that maybe not everyone would want to tell people about their Classes, they could be considered quite private after all.
"What?" William seemed to have noticed Dan's gaze as he asked in amusement, "Is there something on my face?"
"No, no," Dan chuckled at his friend's dry humour before continuing, "I was just wondering about your class. If you don't mind talking about it, that is."
"Oh, just that? I see no reason why I would say no," William tilted his head in confusion at first before an embarrassed expression surfaced on his face as he laughed, "Actually, I might have a reason why I would..."
Dan's confusion must have been clear, because he soon waved his hand and continued, "I'm just a bit embarrassed at my choice that's all. You see, in my class choices, I got what I presume could be considered normal classes, Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, and even Ship Engineer. But I didn't choose any of them. I've been a measure of one or the other most of my life, and I guessed, if we are in a magical world, why don't I have some of that fun too?"
Dan started understanding where this was going. And as expected his friend continued,
"The class I got is Magical Engineer," William scratched his head, "I don't know how good it is, or how useful it's going to be, but I got it already and I'm happy with it for now."
"Wow," Dan didn't know what to say other than that. None of them knew what might be useful or not in this new world, so they could just go with their hunch and wish for the best, "What does its description say?"
William first looked absentmindedly into space before saying as if he was reading off,
"You have spent most of your life trying to solve problems that came your way using your wealth of knowledge and your experience. It's time for you to add magic to your repertoire of useful skills, go out there and see the limits of your new path."
"That seems too broad," Dan noted.
"Yeah, I noticed that," William said, "It seemed to have diverged from just being a ship engineer and moved to something more."
"How do you feel about it? Are you happy with what you got?" Dan asked. He was unsure of how his friend felt about this new class of his. He had been the chief engineer of the Voyager for years, and a ship engineer even before that. He didn't know how leaving all that specialisation behind made him feel.
"Oh, that I am happy about," William laughed, "Don't get me wrong, I love working on ships and the Voyager even more. But as a chief engineer, you don't really get your hands dirty that much. And after years of the same things, it starts to get stale. Adding a bit of freshness with a broader field and magic would be great."
"Happy for you then," Dan said, and he was happy. Anything that would make any of them happy in this new world of theirs was more than appreciated.
Just like that, they went back and forth as more and more people started coming in.
The night before, they had chosen rooms for everyone from the suites on deck 16, the same deck where the bridge was. And designated one of the restaurants close to the bridge as where they would be having their meals. At that moment, everyone had their breakfast there before making their way to the bridge.
With more people on the bridge, Dan left William in charge as he got up and made his way to the restaurant. He hadn't had breakfast and that was making itself known.
He made it into The Skyline, the restaurant where they were having their meals. What met him there was Raymond, Nik and Nancy, the cook, the provisions master and the executive chef respectively, working together to get everyone their breakfast.
Greeting everyone, Dan got his portion and made his way to a random table. He was enjoying his breakfast when a tray was dropped opposite to him. Lifting his head, he saw Keith who seemed to have had better days. She had red eyes and her short hair wasn't as silky as it usually was.
"Morning Keith," he greeted her, "Is everything alright, you don't look so good."
"I'm alright, I'm alright," she answered offhandedly, looked around conspicuously, before whispering, "Captain, the Voyager is alive!”
