CHAPTER 19 — COMPLIANCE TEST

  CHAPTER 19 — COMPLIANCE TEST

The corridor is dim and narrow. Pale blue guide lines pulse along the floor, steady and slow. The walls curve inward slightly, closing space.

  Footsteps echo once, then disappear.

  The group moves in silence.

  Unit Fourteen stumbles.

  Not a fall. A correction.

The guard stops instantly. His baton rises.

  “She adjusted,” Aden says.

The words leave him cleanly. No force.

  The baton freezes midair.

  The guard turns slowly.

  “Explain.”

“The deviation corrected after the signal.”

  A pause.

The scanner sweeps Unit Fourteen again. Light passes over her body.

  BEEP.

  BEEP.

Two tones. Slightly out of sync.

The guard frowns. He slams the baton against the wall.

  CLANG.

  Lights flicker.

  “Move.”

Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

  They continue.

  The assessment chamber waits ahead.

The ceiling lowers. The walls curve tight. No windows. No corners.

A single chair stands at the center.

Unit Fourteen is guided forward and seated. Her back stays straight. Hands flat on her thighs.

  Aden remains standing.

A device descends from above. Thin articulated arms align with her temples, spine, neck port. The hum deepens. Pressure fills the room.

  Aden clenches his jaw.

  Unit Fourteen’s fingers twitch.

  The device pauses.

The pause comes before the system registers it.

  The guard glances up.

  “Proceed.”

The device resumes. Dense light fills the chamber. Vision blurs at the edges.

  Unit Fourteen’s breathing shortens.

  Then steadies.

A vent misfires above. Too early.

  Aden looks up.

The device reacts a fraction late.

  Aden steps forward.

  CRACK.

The baton slams into his shoulder. Pain flashes white. He staggers but holds.

  “Stay back.”

Aden nods. Steps back exactly one pace.

  The device finishes.

  Silence.

  The device retracts.

  Unit Fourteen slumps.

  Then corrects too fast.

  The guard checks a panel.

  “Deviation contained.”

  He turns to Aden.

  “Unit Seven. Observation complete.”

  Aden meets his gaze.

  A hesitation.

  CRACK.

The baton strikes Aden’s ribs. Air leaves his lungs.

  “Return to formation.”

The disciplinary room waits deeper in the core.

A metal cube. No sound. No warmth.

Two restraint frames stand opposite each other.

Unit Fourteen is locked into one.

  Aden into the other.

  Krail enters.

  He circles them slowly.

“Speech creates connection. Connection creates deviation. Deviation creates collapse.”

  He stops.

“Unit Fourteen initiated contact. Unit Seven responded.”

  Unit Fourteen lifts her chin.

  Krail turns to Aden.

  “Why did you answer?”

  “She spoke. So I answered.”

A flicker crosses Krail’s eyes. Calculation.

“You do not answer. You obey.”

  He gestures.

Unit Fourteen’s clamps tighten. She gasps.

  Aden watches. Still.

Inside, his fingers twitch. Counting the interval between pulses.

  The ceiling hum shifts.

Aden whispers. Not words. A measure.

  Krail notices.

“You think you are aware. You are not.”

  A beat.

  “Remain empty. Or break.”

  The punishment field activates.

Electricity surges. Aden’s body locks. He does not scream.

  Unit Fourteen convulses. Small. Fragile.

  Aden watches her.

  Not panic.

  Recognition.

  The field cuts.

  They collapse.

“Speak again and it will be worse.”

  Krail’s gaze locks on Aden.

  “Especially you, Unit Seven.”

  He exits.

  Silence remains.

  Aden lifts his head first.

  Their eyes meet.

The silence is no longer empty.
