Chapter 5

Chapter Five — Eyes in the Dark

The alarm bells did not stop.

Their sharp echoes rolled through the Lower Gu Cavern, vibrating along the stone walls like a warning meant for monsters rather than men. Servants pressed themselves against corridors, afraid to move, while outer disciples rushed toward Pit Seven with sealing talismans drawn.

Shen Yu stood at the center of it all.

  Unharmed.

That frightened them more than the breach itself.

Supervisor Gao approached slowly, sweat visible along his temples. His usual arrogance had vanished.

“…Step away from the pit,” he ordered.

  Shen Yu obeyed.

Behind him, the remaining black worms retreated deep into the darkness, coiling tightly together. None attempted another escape. In fact, they trembled — massive predatory Gu behaving like prey.

An arriving disciple activated a formation plate. Golden chains of light reformed over the pit, sealing it once more.

Only then did the tension ease slightly.

“What happened here?” another disciple demanded.

  Gao hesitated.

All eyes shifted toward Shen Yu.

The young man lowered his gaze, appearing confused. “One of them broke the barrier… then disappeared.”

  Not a lie.

  Just not the truth.

  The disciples exchanged looks.

  Gu did not simply disappear.

  Unless devoured.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

  But that was impossible.

Gu consumed essence — they were never consumed so easily themselves.

  ---

Minutes later, a cold pressure descended into the cavern.

  Every servant instinctively knelt.

  An elder had arrived.

Elder Han Wei walked forward slowly, robes untouched by dust despite the chaos. His gaze swept across the damaged formation before settling on Shen Yu.

  The air grew heavy.

  “Explain,” he said calmly.

Supervisor Gao spoke quickly, recounting the breach. Yet the more he explained, the deeper Elder Han’s frown became.

  Finally, silence fell.

Elder Han stepped closer to Shen Yu.

  “Raise your head.”

  Shen Yu obeyed.

For the first time, their eyes met fully.

Spiritual sense crashed against Shen Yu like an invisible tide. Elder Han probed carefully — searching meridians, bones, dantian.

  Nothing.

  Empty.

  No spiritual roots.

  No refined Gu.

  No cultivation.

  Yet…

The elder felt a faint void, something that absorbed his perception the longer he examined it.

  His instincts screamed danger.

  Elder Han withdrew immediately.

  Interesting, he thought.

  Very interesting.

“You will no longer work here,” the elder said suddenly.

  Murmurs spread among the servants.

  Shen Yu blinked.

“From this moment,” Elder Han continued, “you are transferred to Observation Residence.”

  Everyone understood what that meant.

  Not promotion.

  Containment.

  ---

The Observation Residence stood isolated near the inner mountain cliffs — a quiet courtyard surrounded by layered formations. Disciples rarely entered without permission.

A cage disguised as a residence.

Lin Qiao waited at the entrance when Shen Yu arrived.

Her expression was complicated. “You caused quite a disturbance.”

“I didn’t mean to,” Shen Yu said truthfully.

She studied him for a moment. “That’s what worries the elders.”

Inside the courtyard lay simple furnishings — a bed, meditation mat, and a small feeding chamber used for controlled Gu experiments.

The doors sealed behind him with a soft hum.

  Shen Yu was alone again.

  Silence returned.

  And with it…

  The hunger.

  It was stronger now.

He sat cross-legged, breathing slowly, trying to calm himself. Instead, faint sensations reached him from beyond the walls.

  Gu.

  Everywhere in the sect.

Tiny presences flickered at the edge of his awareness — sleeping, feeding, refining, struggling.

  He could feel them.

  His chest tightened.

The unseen Gu within him stirred excitedly.

  Food.

The word did not sound in language, yet he understood perfectly.

Shen Yu clenched his teeth. “No.”

  If others discovered this…

  He would not survive.

As if responding to his resistance, pain suddenly surged through his body. His veins felt hollow, his strength draining rapidly.

The hunger was no longer patient.

  It was demanding.

A faint crack echoed from the feeding chamber beside him.

The sect had already prepared something.

Inside a glass container crawled a single Rank One Stone Shell Gu — harmless but durable, often used for beginner refinement.

  It sensed Shen Yu instantly.

  And began trembling violently.

  Shen Yu stared at it.

  The pain intensified.

  Sweat ran down his face.

  Slowly, unwillingly, he reached forward.

The container opened with a soft click.

The Gu flew toward him as if escaping prison.

The moment it touched his skin—

  It vanished.

  Devoured.

Relief flooded him like cool water after drought.

Shen Yu collapsed forward, breathing hard.

  This time, however, something changed.

Inside his mind, the endless darkness shifted slightly.

A tiny speck of light appeared within the void — the remnant of the consumed Gu.

  Not destroyed.

  Assimilated.

“…You grow by eating them,” he whispered.

Outside the courtyard, hidden within formation shadows, Elder Han watched silently.

  He had witnessed everything.

And for the first time in decades, genuine unease crept into his heart.

“This is no ordinary Gu path…” he murmured.

High above, storm clouds gathered without warning.

  Heaven itself seemed restless.

Because somewhere within the Black River Sect…

  Something had begun cultivating.

  Not by refining Gu.

  But by devouring them.
