Chapter 28: Nerves, Part 1

Kaelen: Sounds about right. I kind of always suspected that you hated me. You never tried to understand me. Not really. Always disregarding my beliefs and opinions. Saying that none of it actually mattered and to just give up on everything I believe in. So I'm really not surprised about any of that.

Tali: -Huh? What are you talking about?

Kaelen: The main example would be you always telling me to just make a basic sword.

Tali didn't reply to that, just staring at him in silence.

Kaelen: Look. I don't care what you think about me. Stay down, if you move you're likely to die. I'll save your sister and kill the Circus Lights. We can talk this over after this is all over.

  -Tali-

He thought she had hated him the whole time? Why? She was telling the truth with the swords. It wasn't his beliefs, it was his ego. His ego didn't let him make anything below his standards. Even if she forgave him they wouldn't win. She hadn't seen how strong any of the other Circus Lights at the Perimeter were, but she knew they would be stronger, or at least more experienced, than he was. Two of the three members here were a higher rank than anyone else he had fought so far. The ranking may not have been full based off of strength, but she suspected there was definitely a link. He couldn't win. Definitely not alone anyways. Why should she help him? She was beginning to hate him. She owed him NOTHING.

But for some reason... She felt she owed it to him. Even if she thought she was in the right about everything he had mentioned, she did care about him back then. So for him to think she had hated him all along... -He was right. They could talk this all over later. He would have to answer for everything he had done in the past few days. But in return, perhaps because of how she had treated him before all of this even though she liked him, she decided she would help him just this once. And from then on, they wouldn't have to talk with each other ever again. -Unless he had a really REALLY good explanation for everything.

Tali, annoyed: Fine. I'll stay down. I'll help you when I recover.

  Kaelen, smiling: That's great.

Tali, annoyed: But I won't forgive you, you know? After this is over you'll have a lot you have to answer for.

Kaelen: I know that. But that's a problem for after I save your sister and kill the Circus Lights.

Tali: There are three of them here.

  Kaelen: They are?

Tali: In rank, Lord Nerve, Sister Mirror, and Sister Flight.

Kaelen: Mirror and Flight... Any idea what their abilities are?

Tali: Not really. But I know they're named after their Sigils.

Kaelen: I actually did already know that.

  -Kaelen-

Kaelen: When did you learn about Sigils?

Tali: When they forced the Sigil of Initiative on me. You?

Kaelen: I got monologued at by a guy I assume was Brother Shade. He kidnapped me and was transporting me to a different part of the Perimeter to throw me out into the sun and burn me alive.

Tali: How did you even get your Sigil?

Kaelen: I made a deal with God.

  Tali: ... Lumex?

Kaelen: Maybe. He replied when I called to Lumex, and asked me to "swear". He took all my Lux in return. He also only replied when I said I would sacrifice my everything.

Tali: Sounds like you sold your soul to the devil for a Sigil. Not to Lumex.

Kaelen: Sister Spark did imply that I had gotten my Sigil from a different place than she did. So it's not impossible.

Tali: You sold your soul to the devil.

Kaelen: Or to God. We don't know for sure.

  Tali: I guess.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

  Kaelen: Also I have two.

Tali: What? That's possible? What's your second one?

  Kaelen: The Sigil of Resurrection.

Tali: So that's you you survived wounds to the heart and neck?

Kaelen: No, I just have much higher defense than your attack.

  Tali: What?

  Kaelen: Nevermind.

He hadn't thought about the origin of his Sigil at all since getting it, but he guessed it made sense that maybe it wasn't Lumex who gave it to him. Especially since he didn't really believe in Lumex until receiving a Sigil. Whatever happened he had given everything away to survive in that moment and didn't regret it. The consequences would come for him later, but that wasn't his problem. Literally speaking it was his problem, but not technically. It was a Future-him problem, and a Future-him problem wasn't a Present-him problem. Therefore it wasn't his problem. So he would simply ignore all potential consequences until they ended up right in his face.

  Tali: Kaelen...?

  Kaelen: Yes?

Tali: Please don't kill them if you don't have to.

Kaelen: They're extremely likely to try and kill me -And unlike you, the rest of the Circus Lights don't do reason. I think. At least that's my experience.

Tali: You're probably right. Lord Nerve especially isn't all that reasonable. He's smart, and will try to trick you into giving up, like he did with me.

Kaelen: I see. That'll be an interesting fight. I wonder what kind of ability the Sigil of Nerves gives. Do you have any ideas?

Tali: The only thing I know is that he can put you to sleep with a single touch.

Kaelen: I didn't plan on letting him touch me anyways, but put me to sleep? He'd be able to Blaze me before I woke up. Not great.

Tali: No. It's not. Good luck Kaelen.

Kaelen: I don't need luck. You'll find I can adapt pretty fast.

  Tali: If you insist.

He turned, leaving through one of the corridors, making his way through them. The corridors of cold metal never seemed to end, they just kept on going. He of course knew they ended, they had to. He just hoped he had picked the correct corridor to go down.

  -Tali-

She wasn’t really sure of what to think about everything that had happened over the past few days, that talk they were going to have would have a lot of questions, and knowing Kaelen not that many answers. Too much had happened in too short a time for her to cope with, and for now, all she could do was wait for Kaelen to save Ela. Even to her own sister she was completely useless...

  -Kaelen-

When Kaelen reached the atrium again he saw a Circus Light standing alone in the room, who then turned to look at Kaelen he saw the signature eye of Lord Nerve.

Lord Nerve: I admit. I wasn't expecting you to try kill her.

  Kaelen: She made me.

Lord Nerve: This has gotten out of hand then if you're willing to go that far. It seems I'll have to deal with you here and now.

Kaelen summoned a two bladed sword, deflecting and cutting hundreds of nerves as they shot at him without end. The nerves were beginning to speed up beyond what Kaelen could deal with, so he swapped out his two bladed sword for two great swords connected by a chain. He swung the blade around and around, faster and faster and faster, using the chain to build up momentum as he cut and sliced all of the nerves. They slowed down for a split-second, long enough for Kaelen to realise and redirect all of the momentum of one of the great swords and throw it directly toward Lord Nerve. The chains travelled through his hand as the sword flew at Lord Nerve, but a giant wall of nerves grew from the ground, the blade piercing them instead of Lord Nerve.

  Kaelen: Tch.

With a tug on the chain, the long sword came flying back to Kaelen, him catching its handle, stopping it. When the wall of nerves came down, he saw Lord Nerve wasn't moving. Something strange had just happened. Something had hurt Lord Nerve, and he wasn't sure what. But if he could hurt Lord Nerve enough, then he might be able to fulfill his promise to Tali, and not kill Lord Nerve if he didn't have to. And right now, it was seemingly like he might not have to.

  Kaelen: Something wrong old man?

Lord Nerve: I'm good. Just thinking.

Kaelen: Don't you know? Thinking will get you killed in a fight.

Lord Nerve: Not when my opponent is you.

  Kaelen: Wow. Rude.

Kaelen steps forward, throwing a kukuri at Lord Nerve, he steps out of the way. Throwing kukuri after kukuri at him as fast as he can, Lord Nerve always stepped out of the way, a bit too fast. From Kaelen's point of view it seemed like Lord Nerve already knew when and where Kaelen would throw the kukuris before Kaelen even did it. This wasn't making sense, but before Kaelen was able to think it over, nerves started shooting out from the ground and at Kaelen, now from hundreds of directions. Kaelen resummoned the great swords connected by a chain to cut them up. Then he felt one cut into him. The nerves had begun shooting from the walls and roof as well and he had never noticed. He had messed up. And he knew it, as he crumbled to the floor, falling asleep.
