When the Heart Waits

  8 PM…

Aditya was sitting in his cabin. There were a few files in front of him that he was reading. His face said it all.

Today, Anamika hadn’t come to meet him, and because of that, his heart felt like it was slowly breaking.

He was trying to distract himself by focusing on work, but even that wasn’t really possible.

  9 PM…

Aditya’s secretary, Ruhi, came into his cabin and said,“Sir… you can leave if you’d like! I’ll handle all the preparations for tomorrow’s client meeting.”

To that, Aditya, without even looking at her, said,“No! You go home. I’ll take care of all this. Anyway…

a few days ago, you said your mother wasn’t well, right?”

Hearing this, Ruhi smiled softly. It felt nice to her that Aditya remembered something she had said.

Actually, her joy was doubled today — because Anamika also hadn’t come in today.

  10 PM…

Aditya was heading back to his floor with coffee from the canteen.

Most people had already left by now.

A few people remained, quickly trying to finish their work so they could head home.

Aditya was walking along the hallway, carefully observing everything.

Tonight, he decided to take the stairs up to his floor.

But before going to his own floor, he visited Anamika’s floor — where her things were still lying there.

  11 PM…

Aditya was standing by the window in his room, looking up at the sky.

Tonight, the moon was completely out.

The flowers on the trees, glowing in its light, looked incredibly beautiful — but in Aditya’s eyes, which were watching that view, there was no emotion.

His eyes were craving a different sight altogether.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Aditya’s heart wanted to run straight to Anamika and hear her decision —

  but he was scared:

What if her decision broke his heart?

And so, he was trying hard to convince his heart to stay strong.

  12 AM…

It was already midnight, but Aditya had no intention of leaving.

Deep down, he still had hope — that Anamika would come.

And when she did, he wanted to be right here to meet her.

That’s why Aditya didn’t want to go anywhere.

Just then, someone knocked on the door of his cabin.

Wondering who it could be at such a late hour, he said, “Come in!”

Saaniya walked in, and as soon as she entered, she glanced around and asked,“Where’s Anu?”

Hearing that question, Aditya’s eyes filled with questions of their own.

He replied, “Anamika didn’t come to meet me.”

Saaniya shouted, “Then where did Anu go?! She’s not at home! She left in the morning saying she was going to meet you!”

Aditya, now visibly anxious, said, “What! She’s been missing since morning and you’re just now out looking for her?! You’re always with her, aren’t you…?”

To this, Saaniya replied, “Yes… usually I am. But not today! Actually… I haven’t been home since morning.

I got a message from Anamika in the evening that she was coming to meet you.

I replied, telling her that I’d take her tomorrow because an accident case had come up at the agency.

When I got home at 11:30, she wasn’t there. Her phone’s unreachable too!”

Hearing this, Aditya got extremely scared.

He immediately picked up the landline in his cabin and called the security guards.

As soon as he called, all the security guards arrived.

Aditya showed them Anamika’s photo and assigned them to the task of finding her.

At the same time, Aditya himself had joined Saaniya in the desperate search for Anamika inside the building.

His phone lay abandoned on his cabin desk — and Aniket’s name kept flashing on the screen, call after call.

By the time half an hour had passed, every floor, every room, every corner had been searched.

  But Anamika was nowhere.

  Aditya returned to his cabin.

Saaniya was sitting there, hunched over, eyes wild with worry.

He walked toward her slowly, still catching his breath. “Maybe…” he began, trying to steady his voice, “maybe she just… lost her way or something?”

Saaniya snapped her head up. “Should we file a police complaint?”

Aditya shook his head. “They won’t register it. Not unless she’s been missing for 24 hours. That’s the rule.”

“Then what now?!” she cried, standing up. “No! I’m going to find Anu myself—”

She turned to leave, but Aditya stepped in her path. “Wait. It’s past midnight, Saaniya. Just stay here. I’ll go look.”

He reached for his phone, just as it buzzed again.

  Aniket.

Aditya rolled his eyes, irritated. Sixteen calls. What was wrong with that idiot?

He picked up the phone sharply, ready to snap—

  But he didn’t speak.

  His body froze.

And then — just like that — the tension on his face vanished.

  His breath hitched. Eyes closed.

For a split second, everything inside him went still.

“She’s safe,” he whispered to himself, the storm in his chest calming instantly.

But as soon as that calm came…

  another realization hit.

  She’s safe… with Aniket.

  His eyes flicked to Saaniya.

And that calm? It vanished faster than it came.

Aditya turned to her with the kind of fake smile people wear before a bomb goes off.“That was Aniket,” he said, voice soft, cautious.“You know how he is… sweet guy… very emotional… sometimes… uh… impulsive. He doesn’t always mean to mess things up. In fact, he’s really—”

Saaniya folded her arms, her eyes narrowing dangerously.“What did he do?”

  Aditya gulped.“He’s… with Anamika.”

  Boom.

Saaniya’s eyes widened — not with relief, but with rage.A slow, devilish smile crept across her lips.

She stepped forward and grabbed his collar.

  “Where. Is. That. Idiot?!”

  Aditya flinched. “H-Hospital…”

Saaniya immediately let go, stunned. She stared at him as if he’d told her the moon exploded.

Then, without a word, she turned and marched toward the door.

“Saaniya! Wait!” Aditya called after her.“Let me explain! It’s not what you think! PLEASE — just listen to me!”

But she was already gone — a raging storm in sneakers.

And now, only one thing was certain: Aniket was doomed.

But even as Aditya ran after her, trying to catch up, one question kept echoing in his mind:

What exactly happened between Aniket and Anamika?

  And more importantly…

How the hell did they end up in a hospital… together?
