Chapter 31: Double Performance, Act One

  Location: The Forest

  Time of Day: Evening

The party moved deeper into the forest until they stepped out into an open field at dusk. Tall golden grass swayed around their feet, and the trees circled the clearing like walls, making it feel sealed off. The breeze was light, the air far too calm.

"I don't sense any movement so far," Captain said, his voice low and wary. "And it's a bit too quiet... again."

Slayer stretched his arms, drawing in a long breath. "Well, one thing's for sure, this is the most peaceful place we've seen so far."

"Which means we should be even more cautious," Lumina replied, her hand already resting on the hilt of her blade.

"Yeah... let's stay cautious," Hikari added. Her drone hummed softly at her side, almost as if it agreed.

The group pressed forward, and after a few more careful steps, Captain halted suddenly, his rifle angling down. "...Hold up. Look here."

The others gathered as he knelt, pointing to the ground. A slick trail of black liquid gleamed faintly in the fading light, pooled against the golden grass.

Hikari crouched beside him, her drone humming uneasily. She pressed her gloved fingers lightly into the liquid. It clung thick and tar-like, staining her fingertips. Rubbing them together, she frowned. "It's still fresh..."

Lumina leaned in slightly. "Is that... blood?"

Hikari hesitated, her brows knitting. "Hard to say. But... it's definitely not human. Human blood shouldn't be this dark in color. Which means..." she glanced around the clearing, unease sharp in her tone, "...an Echo must've crossed through here. Or worse... it's waiting."

Slayer shifted his shield into position, "Great. Nothing like a surprise guest at a peaceful picnic."

Tick. The sound was faint and metallic. Tick. The party stopped in place. The air grew heavy, and the whole field fell into a dead stillness.

"Hm? ...Did anyone else hear that?" Lumina whispered, her eyes scanning the open field.

Captain gave a firm nod, rifle raised. "Yeah... sounds like a clock ticking."

Hikari's eyes went wide, her voice breaking out in urgent clarity. "We have to move now! Out of the field, quickly!"

Slayer blinked, startled. "Wait, what? Why?!"

"I'll explain later!" Hikari snapped, her tone slicing through the tension. "Let's just get out of here before it's too late!"

Lumina gave a sharp nod, katana ready. "Okay Hikari. I'll trust your judgement."

Captain adjusted his rifle with a CHK-CHK, stepping back into formation. "Agreed. Move!"

WHSSHHH! The tall grass bent as the party broke into motion, feet pounding against the earth. Hikari's drone hovered close, its hum trailing beside them. Behind, the ticking rose TICK-TICK-TICK!

Then the ground beneath them flickered with sudden light. A giant clock face appeared, its golden lines spreading across the field. Gears turned along the edges, and the clock hands slowly began to move. The glow deepened - pressing down on them, heavy and suffocating. The group staggered back in shock, the illuminated dial spanning the entire clearing.

"What the hell is this giant clock?!" Captain shouted, sprinting across the field.

Hikari's eyes widened in horror. "Oh no... it's starting!" she yelled, her voice trembling with urgency. "Everyone, keep going! All the way to the other side of the field!"

The clock beneath their feet began to hum, its hands jerking forward too fast. Each tick sent a tremor through the air, echoing in their chests. The numbers lit up, and golden light spread across the grass like flowing veins of molten metal. Tick. Tick. Tick. The hands jerked faster with each second.

Captain gritted his teeth, keeping his rifle leveled as the glow intensified. "It's accelerating!"

Slayer shielded his eyes against the glare, his usual grin gone. "Not exactly the kind of stage lights I wanted!"

Lumina's voice was sharp, commanding. "Stay close and keep moving!"

Hikari's pulse pounded in her ears as her eyes locked on the dial. "It's almost at midnight!" she shouted. "Hurry!"

The final second dragged and the sound hit like a cathedral bell. DONG! Midnight.

The field exploded. From the center of the glowing clock, the ground split apart as gears and broken dials burst into the air. A tall skeletal figure rose from the earth, its hollow chest swinging a golden pendulum that sent ripples of warped light across the field. The Echo had arrived...

Hikari's eyes widened, recognition flashing in her panic. She raised her voice above the ringing chime, desperate. "Everyone stay ba-!"

The words never finished. In a blur, the Echo lunged. SHNK! Its long fingers wrapped tight around Hikari's torso, lifting her with terrifying ease.

Before anyone could react, the monster hurled her across the field like a ragdoll. WHOOOM! Her body slammed into the far side of the clearing, golden grass erupting on impact. BOOM! Her drone wavered in the air, sparks flickering from its core. It let out one last soft hum... almost like a whimper, before fading into nothing beside her.

  Captain's voice cut sharp. "Hikari!"

The ticking grew louder. Tick. Tick. TICK.

"Hikari!" Lumina's voice cracked across the clearing as she took a step forward, eyes locked on her fallen comrade.

Slayer shifted uneasily, "Ohhh... that's not good."

Between them stood the Echo. A giant skeleton made of broken clocks and rusted gears. Its arms and legs moved in stiff, jerky motions, driven by the glowing clock at the center of its hollow chest -its pendulum swinging back and forth with a steady tick. A torn black robe hung loosely from its body, fluttering with every movement like it was alive. Its skull, half-covered by cracked dials, glared down at them with empty eyes.

Captain steadied his rifle at the Echo. "Hey Lumina, I don't know what the hell is this thing... but you're going to have to figure it out without Hikari's guidance this time." His eyes flicked toward Hikari's crumpled form at the far end of the field. His voice grew firm. "I have to go make sure if she's okay."

Lumina's grip tightened on her katana. She gave a sharp nod. "It's fine, go. Slayer and I will handle this."

"Thanks Lumina." Captain then turned to Slayer, his tone quick but trusting. "Slayer, beat the hell out of that Echo for me."

Slayer smirked under his visor, swinging his shield into place. "You got it. Been needing a little cardio anyway."

Without another word, Captain sprinted through the grass toward Hikari. The Echo lunged, its pendulum glowing as its body snapped forward. Its skeletal claws swung wildly, trying to cut him down.

CLANG! Lumina and Slayer stepped in together, their blades locking against the strike. VWOOMMM! Green and blue light burst outward as they unleashed their Emanations, the shockwave shaking the ground.

Lumina's eyes narrowed. "Not one step further."

Slayer smirked behind his visor. "Time's up, bonehead."

The Echo hissed SKREEEE!, gears grinding as it staggered back a step.

Lumina steadied her stance, katana raised. "Slayer, we don't know what this thing is. So try not to rush head in first. For now, let's stay on defense until I say so."

Slayer planted his shield into the ground with a solid THUNK! "Hmph. Luckily for you, defense is what I do best."

The Echo let out another harsh hiss, its pendulum glowing brighter. Tick... tick... tick. In a blur, it lunged forward, claws slashing straight at Lumina. CLANG! CLASH! CLANG! Lumina parried strike after strike, her blade flashing green as sparks flew. "Slayer! I'll start going on the offense and keep it busy while you find an opening!"

"Offense already?" Slayer asked, tilting his head.

CLANG! CLASH! CLANG! Lumina's blade sparked as she parried another flurry of strikes. Her voice stayed steady through the strikes. "This thing's fast. I need to pressure it and force out its moves."

Slayer smirked, flashing her a thumbs-up. "Alright, you got it. Tag team time!"

Lumina twisted her katana, turning defense into offense. With a sharp cry, she drove the blade into the Echo's chest. SHNK! The steel lodged deep between its bones. The Echo froze, staring down at the blade, then up at her with hollow eyes. A low growl rattled from its skull.

"Tch... damn, it's stuck between the ribs!" Lumina snarled, yanking hard on the lodged blade. SWOOSH! The Echo's claw cut toward her, but she reacted instantly, leaping high, twisting into a somersault kick. WHAM! Her heel crashed against its skull, the impact shaking loose her katana with a metallic SHNK! Lumina landed lightly, blade in hand, grass rippling under her feet. The Echo staggered back with a hiss, gears grinding and screeching as it reeled, momentarily dazed.

From across the field, Slayer raised his sword high. "Oathblade Surge!" WHOOOM! He swung down, releasing crescent waves of glowing energy that ripped across the ground, carving lines of light toward the Echo. Each wave struck true - BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Until the battlefield was filled with smoke and drifting blue embers.

Lumina kept her blade ready. "Stay sharp, Slayer."

Slayer chuckled. "Ha! That had to do the trick."

But as the smoke thinned, the Echo emerged, untouched. Its cracked frame looked the same as before.

Slayer's confidence faltered. "What the-? My attack didn't even scratch it?"

Lumina narrowed her eyes. "Seems that way. Whatever it did, it avoided the damage in an instant."

The Echo tilted its skull head back and hissed at the sky, SKREEEEEE! The ticking dials on its skull echoed louder. Tick... tick... tick. The Echo hissed, its pendulum swinging harder, each arc glowing brighter. WHUM-WHUM-WHUM. Lumina narrowed her eyes. "What's it doing?"

The pendulum pulsed BOOOOM! Shockwaves ripped out, blasting straight toward her.

"Lumina!" Slayer shouted, dashing forward as his shield snapped into place. KRRRSHHH! The impact hammered against him, the ground cracking beneath his feet as he held firm. The waves faded - then the Echo lunged in. Slayer planted his shield into the dirt. "RADIANT BASTION!"

BOOOM! A blast of blue light erupted as his shield struck the ground. A glowing blue dome flared outward, the shockwave slamming into the Echo on impact. KRAASH! The force hurled the monster across the field and into the dirt.

Lumina arched a brow, eyes tracing the glowing blue barrier. "Hmm... not bad. So, this one of your new tricks?"

Slayer grinned under his visor. "Been saving this one for a big reveal. Radiant Bastion. It throws up a barrier of light. Anyone inside gets shielded, and anything that tries to force its way through..." He pointed to the Echo sprawled in the dirt. "...gets blasted right back."

Lumina gave a sharp nod as the blue barrier faded. "Impressive. But that won't be enough to take it down. Look." The Echo rose, its claws sharpening with a metallic SHINK! Its ticking grew faster.

Slayer tilted his head. "Oh-hoh... I think we made it mad."

Lumina's grip tightened. "It's getting serious now. Slayer, time to shift to offense."

  Slayer nodded. "Let's do it."

Their auras flared, green and blue light colliding, shaking the ground. The Echo screeched. SKREEEE! In a single blur, it dashed straight between them. FWOOOM! Both turned in shock, but too late - the creature's claws clamped around their stomachs.

"Ghh-!" Lumina gasped as they were yanked upward.

The Echo leapt high into the air - then hurled them down. BOOOOM! They slammed into the ground, dirt and grass flying everywhere.

"Dammit..." Lumina grunted, forcing herself up. "It's faster than before."

Slayer gripped his blade, rising with a groan. "Tch. Can't believe it even outpaced your reflexes."

Lumina shot him a glare. "Oh shut up. Lucky grab, that's all."

  "Uh-huh." Slayer chuckled dryly.

The Echo landed lightly, pendulum swaying, and let out a strange, low giggle. Tick-tick... heh...

Slayer froze. "...Did it just laugh at us?"

Lumina's eyes burned. "It seems to be enjoying this... fine then." Her voice sharpened. "I'll give it a reason to laugh!" She shut her eyes - then snapped them open, glowing bright green. "CHRONUS OVERDRIVE!" The word rang out, echoing across the clearing. The Echo's laughter cut short. Its hollow stare fixed on her, now deadly serious. "Slayer," Lumina called out, voice sharp,

Lumina called out, her voice sharp and aura surging around her. "I hate to admit it, but It's outpacing me. So I'll try to match its speed with Chronus Overdrive." She narrowed her eyes. "Also, our blades aren't seem to be cutting through it's bones. So try finding another way to hurt it."

Slayer raised a hand helplessly. "Wait, how exactly am I supposed to-" But Lumina was already gone in a streak of green. "Ah, there she goes. Okay... think, Slayer. How do I break that ugly clock skull?"

FWOOOSH! Lumina met the Echo head-on. CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! Her katana lashed out, precise and rapid, cutting across its body from every angle, front, side, even behind as she flashed past in green streaks of light. Sparks flew, the Echo recoiled, gears grinding, hissing through its cracked jaw with a harsh KSSSHHH!

But something was wrong. SKRRSH! Lumina skidded back across the dirt, chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. She then though to herself. ("No... my strikes aren't landing. It's like I'm cutting through air. And worse... it's getting faster the longer this fight drags on. I must find a way to break it's stamina.")

Her aura surged again, stronger, as she steadied her breath. "Fine. If one of me isn't enough..." Her katana lifted. "Then how about this-" Her eyes snapped shut for a moment, then opening with a fierce green glow. "Twilight Twin!" Her voice echoed as her green aura split. FWOOOSH!

A second Lumina shimmered into existence at her side, her form translucent and glowing green like ghostfire. Every detail matched her, the stance, the movement, even the flowing strands of hair. A perfect afterimage brought to life. Lumina's eyes narrowed, her aura blazing. "Now... let's see how you handle two of me."

The Echo didn't flinch. KRRRK! Its arms crossed with a hollow creak, the motion stiff and mocking.

"Tch." Lumina shot forward in a blur, "Keep mocking me!" Her Twilight Twin raced at her side. FWOOOM! In an instant, she closed the gap - blades flashing toward the Echo. But then the Echo's pendulum swung. BOOOOM! Shockwaves tore through the air.

"Not this time!" Lumina roared as her blade tore through the shockwaves. Her Twin snapped in front, shielding her true form. CLANG-CLANG! Sparks burst in every direction as they forced a path through. FWOOOSH! Lumina leapt high, katana raised overhead. "Haaaah!" SHNK! Both she and her twin came down in perfect sync, a double slash cutting across the Echo's body. But again... nothing. Not even a scratch.

The Echo let out a piercing SKREEEEE! and blurred forward. SLASH-SLASH! Its claws carved through the torso of Lumina and her twin in the same instant. SHHKKT! Blood sprayed across the grass as the impact hurled them back. KRAAASH! Both bodies skidded hard through the dirt, gouging deep trails in the earth. "Ghh-!" Lumina staggered, teeth gritted, one hand pressed firmly against the bleeding cut. Her Twin steadied at her side, it's body glowing dim. She then thought to herself. ("No way... nothing is working. No matter what I try, it's not going down. There must be a hidden ability at work... something I haven't uncovered yet.")

The Echo hissed, its clocks ticking faster and faster. TICK-TICK-TICK!

In a blur it lunged for Lumina. Her Twin intercepted first CLANG! its blade sparking as it caught the strike. The real Lumina followed an instant later, katana flashing green. CLASH-CLASH-CLANG! The Echo's claws became a storm, each swing faster and sharper. Lumina's grip tightened, sweat running down her temple as she fought to match the rhythm. Beside her, the Twin faltered under the onslaught, aura becoming faint with each impact as if sharing her exhaustion. Even together, they were slipping. "Dammit... it's speeding up again!" Then-

"Hey, Lumina!" Slayer shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "I've got a plan!"

CLANG! Lumina shoved the Echo's claw aside, sparks flying. "Oh, finally! This ought to be brilliant - because nearly dying while I stall has been so much fun!"

Slayer puffed up proudly, pointing straight at the Echo. "Oh your gonna love this. It's simple..."

He suddenly turned on his heel. CLANK-CLANK-CLANK! "Ruuuun!"

Lumina's eyes went wide. "What the-?! That's your plan?!" CLANG! She caught another claw swipe, sparks bursting as she snarled after him. "You absolute idiot, get back here!"

Slayer sprinted across the field jokingly, only to slam headfirst into something unseen. THUD! He staggered back, holding his helmet. "What the-?! An invisible wall?!" He pressed his shoulder into it. WHAM-WHAM! "Why can't I cross?" He pounded the barrier with his fist, BAM! BAM! frustration boiling. "Hey, Lumina!"

Lumina grit her teeth, parrying a storm of strikes with her twin. CLANG-CLANG-CLASH! "Kinda busy here, Slayer!"

"Uhm, there's a freakin' wall blocking me here!" he shouted, ramming his shoulder into it again. THUD! THUD! He threw up his hands. "I wasn't actually running away, y'know! I was about to unleash my secret move... but I can't even get through this thing!"

Lumina twisted her blade, deflecting another claw swipe. DING! "How about you stop fooling around and come help me out instead?! This Echo is really starting to piss me off!"

Slayer opened his mouth to respond, "Sorry goin-" but his words died. Mmph! His jaw wouldn't move. His hand shot to his helmet, tugging desperately. KRRRK! ("Wha-?! I can't... speak?!")

Then, a voice, calm and familiar rang out from behind Lumina. "Lumina, I've figured out how to beat the Echo!"

Still locked in combat, Lumina narrowed her eyes. "Oh? Done playing around and actually helping me?" CLANG! Sparks burst as she caught another swipe. "Well, spill it!"

The voice replied smoothly. "You need to deactivate Chronus Overdrive and Twin Dance just before it's about to strike! The brighter your aura burns, the stronger it becomes! But when your aura falters between its attacks, its speed and power will drop just for an instant! That's when you'll have your opening and strike it down then!"

Slayer's eyes widened inside his visor as he thought to himself. ("Wait... that's my voice!")

Lumina frowned, not looking back. "Hmph... sounds too clever to be you. But fine... I'll trust your words."

"Mmmph!" Slayer clawed at his sealed mouth, panic rushing in. ("No, that's not me! Lumina, don't listen!") He waved frantically, gesturing at her. ("Over here!") He broke into a run, charging toward her. But then... FWOOOSH!

Slayer stopped short. "Huh?" Something was standing in his path.

It was tall and thin, shaped like a toy come to life. Its pale, porcelain body was split with deep cracks, and it wore striped pants with a black-and-white tunic stretched tightly across its chest. A mask-like face stared back at him, lips frozen in a wide red grin, with black blood running down from hollow eyes. Inside those eyes, a faint gray static flickered. Slayer's thoughts sharpened. ("That black blood... it's the same one we saw in the grass earlier... Then that must mean...")

The figure tilted its head with a stiff SNAP! Its arms hung loose, joints moving in jerks like a puppet pulled by strings. Slayer's eyes narrowed. ("Another Echo...") Slowly, it raised one porcelain hand and mimed pressing against the air. THUNK! An invisible wall appeared in front of Slayer, stopping him cold. ("Not good.") He thought, stepping a bit back. The pale figure didn't speak. The only sound was the faint CRRK-CRRK of porcelain shifting as it stood there, staring at him in silence.

Meanwhile, the Echo raised its claws for the finishing strike - unaware it was giving Lumina the opening she needed. TICK-TICK-CLANG! Her aura faded as she cut off her Overdrive. Her Twin shattered beside her in a burst of green particles. SHHHK! "Hope this works... NOW!" she shouted, swinging her katana up to meet the blow.

But the Echo didn't slow down. SHNK! Its claws tore into her side, driving deep. "Hhhk-!" Her breath hitched as blood sprayed across the grass. The monster leaned close, its hollow eyes locking onto hers as it hissed KSSSHHH!

Lumina's grip trembled around her blade. "W-Why didn't it work...? I-It was supposed to... Th-This thing... it's-"

WHOOOM! With a savage motion, the Echo flung her like a ragdoll. THUD! SKRRSH! She slammed into the ground, sliding through dirt and grass until she finally lay still - motionless and broken. Her lips moved faintly, voice breaking on a weak breath. "...Sorry... Everyone..."

The skeletal Echo tilted its head back and hissed at the sky. KSSSHHH!

From afar, Slayer saw it all, the sight of Lumina's fall burning into him. He slammed against the invisible wall, THUD-THUD-THUD! Fists pounding as his muffled voice erupted, "LUMINA!!!" The cry echoed back against the barrier, swallowed by silence...
