Chapter 22: Crowned in Emanation

  Location: Lumina's Tavern

  Time of Day: Afternoon

  Week 3 Day 6

Inside the tavern, the team finally relaxed for the first time in weeks. Captain sat next to Hikari with a mug in his hand. She idly stirred her tea while gazing out the window. Across from them, Slayer leaned back with a muffled laugh behind his helmet, already two mugs deep.

"The best part of a job well done? Is having zero responsibilities!" Slayer announced, grinning.

Lumina stepped from the kitchen. "You forgot one thing," she said, setting a tray of steaming buns down at the center of the table. "This. Compliments from the chef."

"Mmm... compliments and carbs. My two favorite food groups," He replied, rubbing his stomach.

Captain glanced at Hikari. "You seem quiet today. Planning something already?"

She blinked, pulled from a daydream. "Oh-no. Just... taking it in, that's all. ...We're finally going back soon, huh."

"Not yet," Lumina said, taking a seat, legs crossed. "You've still got two full days before the week ends. But this time, there will be no more exercises or sparring."

Hikari's eyes lit up, setting her cup of tea on the table. "Wait, so does that mean we're free??"

"Uh-huh, completely," Lumina said, offering a soft smile. "Rest is just as important as discipline, so enjoy the last couple days here at Xevia. The city is yours to explore."

Hikari clapped her hands together. "Yay, finally! No more death drills!"

Slayer threw both arms wide. "Yes! Congratz to you both! You've survived this far, and that's worth celebrating!"

Captain crossed his arms, trying to sound unimpressed, though a faint smirk tugged at his lip. "Hmph. Guess a break doesn't sound too bad."

Lumina's gaze softened as she looked over them all. "Enjoy it while it lasts. You've guys earned this."

Slayer leaned back, hands laced behind his helmet. "Now then, what should we do to celebrate? We could shop, eat, or... I don't know, dress Captain up in something ridiculous."

Captain's glare was immediate. "Try it, and I'll turn your helmet into scrap."

  "That's the spirit!" Slayer chuckled.

Lumina turned to Hikari. "So, what are you going to do with your last two days?"

"Uhmm... oh, I know!" Hikari replied eagerly. "Sleep, since I definitely deserve it. Eat, because I want to try as much food from this world as possible. And definitely explore around Xevia such as the shops, the streets, and meet the people that live here."

Lumina smiled and nodded. "Glad to hear it." Her gaze shifted to Captain. "How about you? Anything you wanna do before we leave?"

Captain cracked his knuckles, expression flat. "Easy. Try not to kill Slayer before we leave."

"How admirable," she teased with a grin.

Slayer chuckled. "You're welcome to try soldier boy."

They laughed together, lingering in the tavern through the rest of the morning and trading stories over the dishes Lumina set on the table. Later that day, the party wandered into the lively marketplace of Xevia. Music drifted through the air, blending with the chatter of townsfolk and the sharp cries of merchants calling out their prices. Lanterns swayed gently in the breeze, while the scent of roasted street food carried down the streets.

Hikari paused at a vendor's stall lined with delicate glass ornaments and softly glowing stones. She picked one up, holding it to the light as she studied the faint glow inside. "These are infused with Emanation..." she whispered to herself. "How cool!"

Captain stood a few steps behind her, arms crossed. "You know you can't take everything with you."

Hikari rolled her eyes and mimicked his voice with mock seriousness. "'You know you can't take everything with you.' Huh, says the guy with a combat knife hidden in his boot." Captain didn't answer, just smirked at her comeback.

A few stalls down, Slayer was locked in a spirited "negotiation" with a merchant. He held up a floppy hat, inspecting it as if it was rare treasure. "C'mon, just look at this craftsmanship! It's practically begging to be worn by a hero like me," he declared.

The merchant raised an eyebrow. "That will be five gold Aetherium coins."

"Five?! Oh please, with my charm alone, this hat's value just doubled." Slayer struck a pose, the hat wobbling on top of his helmet. The merchant's only response was a slow, unimpressed blink.

Lumina stood quietly beneath the shade of a flower stall, her gaze distant. Her hand brushed against the black pendant resting at her chest, the one her mother had given her long ago. She said nothing, and she didn't need to. As the day passed, the group laughed and enjoyed themselves. But after the liveliness of the market, Lumina slipped away. She walked alone along a narrow cobblestone path flanked by blooming bushes and tall swaying trees. The air grew cooler, carrying the faint scent of jasmine. The city's noise faded behind her.

At the top of a grassy hill, she reached a small wooden bench beneath an old tree. Beside it stood a worn, hand-carved stone. Lumina knelt before it. The name Rena Halewood was engraved across the surface, surrounded by tiny wildflowers that had grown naturally around it. Lumina laid her hand gently against the stone and closed her eyes.

"Hey," she whispered. Her voice was soft and steady.

"I know... I haven't been by in a while. But, I have another story to share with you today... and I think you'll like this one." She drew in a quiet breath. "So, I met some new people recently. They're... not from around here though. They come from another dimension actually." A faint laugh escaped her. "I know sounds crazy, right? They came to our world looking for help, so we offered to train them. Teaching them the ins and outs of Emanation. Though it's been pretty intense ever since they showed up."

A pause. A breeze slipped past her sleeve, rustling the flowers. "They've really grown a lot already... and they're also loud. But..." Her lips shifted into a faint smile. "In a good way." Her voice faltered, softer now. "I'll be heading to their world soon, so I'll be gone for a while. Who knows for how long though. But I promise I'll make it back alive and will be seeing you soon again."

For a few seconds, there was only silence. "There was a moment where I thought... if only you were still here. You would've liked them. Especially Hikari. She kinda reminds me of you actually. Kind, curious... and a little reckless too." Lumina let out a small chuckle. She then slipped a hand into her sleeve and pulled out a neatly wrapped bun. "Here. I brought your favorite," she said softly. "It's fresh from the bakery." She placed it carefully beside the stone. The chime above the hill rang once in the wind. "...I miss you dearly, Rena."

A breeze rolled gently through the trees. It carried with it the scent of flowers... and the faint echo of laughter she once shared with Rena. Lumina stayed there for a long while, eyes closed, simply listening.

  Later...

As the sun dipped low, the cobbled streets of Xevia transformed. Lanterns flickered to life, strung along every storefront. The scent of roasted meats, spiced vegetables, and sweet desserts lingered in the air, carried by laughter and music drifting through the alleyways. Drawn by the glow and noise of the festival, the party decided to spend their night outside.

"Alright, everyone!" Slayer declared, hands on his hips. "We've trained, we've bled, and now... we feast!"

Captain raised an eyebrow. "But you already ate twice today."

"And now it's dinner," Slayer shot back with a grin. "Totally different meal."

Hikari's eyes sparkled as she dashed from stall to stall, practically bouncing with excitement. "Ooo~! Look at this!" She pointed at a skewer of dumplings sizzling over colorful steam. "These are infused with aura essence, right? We have to try them!"

Captain smirked. "Let me guess. You just want to analyze them."

"Maybe! And eat them too," she shot back. "Science and snacks go hand in hand you know."

Lumina trailed behind the others, calm. She held a neatly wrapped rice ball in hand, her gaze drifting upward to the night sky where the first stars began to sparkle.

Later, they found a quiet bench just beyond the busiest part of the festival. Streetlamps cast a soft amber glow across the path, and the noise of the crowd faded into a gentle murmur behind them. Captain sat beside Lumina, quietly eating a grilled meat skewer. Hikari lounged cross-legged on the grass, happily chewing something far too sugary. And Slayer - of course - was still sampling everything within arm's reach.

"Mmph- Thishh lil' outshide trip? Worff it... jus' fer the shtree' food," Slayer mumbled through a mouthful. He then swallowed with a loud gulp. "I mean... sword fights, stamina training, puzzles... meh. But these garlic dumplings?" He held one up proudly. "Divine!"

Hikari giggled. "Well, if we ever end up saving the world because of all that training... we'll know exactly who to thank."

Slayer leaned back with a satisfied nod. "You're welcome."

Captain shook his head, but the faintest smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. Then BOOM! A brilliant flower of red light burst across the sky. The team looked up, eyes wide, as golden sparks trailed after the first explosion, followed by a spiraling wave of violet. One after another, fireworks bloomed... green blossoms, blue waves, pink stars, each crackling loud until the finale, a white cascade of starlight that rained down over the city.

"Wow... was that planned?" Hikari asked, blinking in awe.

"Festival of Ember's End," Lumina said softly. "They light fireworks to mark the last night before autumn begins."

For a while, no one spoke. They just watched, the colors reflecting in their eyes. "Hmph... this is actually pretty nice," Captain said quietly, exhaling as he leaned back.

Hikari smiled, leaning on her hands. "We'll carry this moment with us. All of it. Even when we step through that portal."

Lumina's gaze stayed on the sky as she gave a small nod. "We promise to bring back light to your world, Hikari."

She turned, her smile bright. "Thanks, Lumina. I know we will."

Slayer stretched with a long yawn, arms wide. "Alright! Now I'm ready to save the world!"

  The Next Morning...

Leaves along the treetops hinted at red and orange, the first signs of autumn. The marketplace was alive with voices and music. Hikari darted between stalls, her usual curiosity on full display. Somewhere along the way, the locals had given her a nickname "the White Princess." It stuck after they noticed her ever-present white lab coat, so out of place yet oddly regal in their eyes.

She paused at a jewelry stand, eyes catching on some delicate rings laid neatly on display. Sparkle... each one glowed faintly with different colors. But the ones that caught Hikari's attention were the pink, red, green, and blue rings. The vendor leaned forward with a smile. "Aura-link rings, miss. And they're not just ornaments... these beauties let you sense your allies' aura from miles farther away than normal. They also let you speak mind-to-mind when apart."

Hikari's eyes lit up. "That's... actually amazing!" She picked up four rings with a small grin, "I'll take these please!" She then put them inside a small velvet pouch that the merchant gave her.

  At the Tavern...

Hikari laid the small velvet pouch on the table. "Here," she said, handing the rings out one by one. "So we don't lose each other if the portal spits us out somewhere weird."

Captain turned the faintly glowing ring over in his hand, brow furrowed. "Rings? Not really my style."

"They're not just rings," Hikari explained, leaning forward eagerly. "They're called Aura-link rings. They let us sense each other's auras from much farther away than normal. And even communicate through the link when we're apart."

Slayer tilted his helmet toward his, the faint blue shimmer reflecting in his visor. "Wait, so like... I can just whisper into this thing and you'll all hear me in your heads?"

"More or less," Hikari said with a little shrug.

"Ohh~ this is dangerous." Slayer chuckled. "You guys do realize I can now annoy you all twenty-four hours of the day, right?"

Hikari groaned. "Ohh jeez, I instantly regret this."

Lumina lifted the green ring in the air. "They're definitely genuine. I've seen them get used before by Xevian scouts. The bond is unbreakable once formed, and distance doesn't weaken it."

Captain raised an eyebrow. "So basically... a communication system."

  "Exactly," Lumina said simply.

Hikari grinned. "Then it's perfect. No matter what happens on the other side of the portal... we'll always be linked."

One by one, they each slid the rings onto their fingers. A soft hum filled the air as the four colors... pink, red, green, and blue - flared in unison. For a brief moment, their auras resonated together. They were now ready to step through the portal and face whatever waited on the other side as one.

  Later that day...

As the sun dipped low, the party returned to Lumina's tavern. The scent of roasted meat and simmering vegetables drifted through the air while Lumina moved calmly behind the bar. She had prepared her specialty dish, serving each of them a plate before setting cocktails on the table. The group gathered around the central table, glasses in hand.

"For the tiring trials we endured," Hikari said, raising her cup.

"To our final night in Xevia." Lumina added, lifting hers as well.

"To food," Slayer declared. "Because tomorrow, we'll be eating... whatever Echohold-09 dares to call food."

Captain raised his cup, smirking. "Hmph. Don't worry Slayer. If the food doesn't kill you, I'll gladly do it myself." Laughter broke out across the table, the warmth of their bond filling the room.

  Later that night...

The group stepped out into the quiet city. Behind the tavern, the party sat together on a patch of grassy terrain. Above, the stars shimmered faintly, framed by the quiet rooftops of Xevia.

"You think we'll ever come back, Captain?" Hikari asked softly, her knees pulled close as she gazed at the sky.

"Doesn't matter to me," He replied, arms resting on his knees. "Just know if you do, I'll be there to back you up."

Hikari grinned faintly. "Heh, you better be."

Slayer turned as if to crack a joke but then he froze, his tone dropping. "...Wait a minute." His visor tilted upward. High on the rooftops, a lone figure stood perfectly still, draped in a black hood. From beneath the shadow, two faint purple eyes glowed, unblinking, and locked on them.

Hikari frowned, following his gaze. "Hm? What is it, Slayer?"

Captain's voice was sharp. "Yeah. Everything okay?"

Slayer lifted a finger, pointing. "There. Up on the rooftop. I think someone's watching us." The instant Hikari and Captain turned FWIP the figure was gone. Without a sound or trace.

"I don't see anyone," Captain muttered. He then glanced at Slayer. "You sure those cocktails aren't getting to you?"

Slayer huffed. "Of course not. I only had nine, thank you very much."

Hikari let out a short giggle, but Lumina's tone cut through, sharp. "I’m afraid he’s not lying. I saw the figure too… and those eyes…"

Slayer straightened, almost relieved. "Yes! I'm glad someone caught it."

Hikari's expression softened as she looked back toward the rooftops. "Really? So... who do you think it was? You think someone is hunting us down behind curtains?"

Lumina's eyes narrowed. "I'm not sure what their intentions might be. I couldn’t sense their aura clearly… it was like a faint brush against my own. Just enough to let me know they were there. Watching us."

"Well... that's not creepy at all," Hikari muttered, forcing a half-smile.

A chill passed over the group. "...Well, whoever it is," Slayer muttered, fists clenching, "they clearly don't know who they're dealing with."

"I have a feeling we'll see soon enough," Captain said lowly. "But from here on out, we should stay alert."

"Agreed," Lumina said firmly. Her gaze swept over the group. "We leave tomorrow night. So until then... stay vigilant everyone. Whoever that was out there, they won't catch us off guard."

Hikari's expression hardened, determination in her eyes. "Well, whoever they are... if they try anything funny. I'll make sure they remember our names."

Together, the party turned back toward Lumina's house. The streets stayed quiet, and no one followed. Or so they thought. High above, the hooded figure lingered on the rooftop once more, purple eyes glowing faintly in the dark. A faint whisper, unmistakably female, drifted from beneath the hood. "The pieces are moving... and soon, they'll understand our truth." A cold, faint giggle slipped into the night air.
