“Is that what you are really capable of?” Yuji didn’t even hesitate to walk over to me after our lecture with Mrs. Doris. Disappointment was written all over his face.
Not disappointed but rather his face was flushing.
“You’re angry.” I glanced at him and my eyebrow raised.
“Of course, I am! How dare you be so low on the list!” Yuji expressed his unhappiness.
“Shouldn’t you be happy? Now we know once for all that you’re more capable.” I smiled at him with a fake smile on my face.
Yuji only seemed more irritated by that. He looked up and down at me.
“This is so boring! In the end you’re another boring regular incapable person.” Yuji steadied his anger. His eyes grew cold and indifferent. He turned his head away from me. Then he walked away.
That look he just had moved something inside me but I pushed it away with my eyes watching him leave.
“That looked intense...” A voice suddenly said.
It was Athena standing in the corridor waiting for me. Our next class was a development class where she was assisting with my project.
“Is something happening between you two?” She asked me the question.
I eyed her with a calm face. “We do compete with our scores and in this midterm test I haven’t done as high as he wanted me to.” I answered.
“Yeah. I got seventy sixth place myself. That test was a little harsh.” She eyed me looking to walk with me to our next class.
“I got tenth place and he got first.” I answered lazily.
Athena’s eyes popped open.
“Wait! He was mad that you didn’t get first place but tenth is also really high! You're super smart!” Athena looked at me not believing what she just heard. Her surprise only made me shake my head.
“What are your thoughts on the new system?” I glanced at her as we walked through the corridor. I wanted to know opinion because she is from here. The way she views this school is completely different from how I see it.
“Mhh...I don’t think it is fair.” She immediately said her opinion sounded strong.
I couldn’t help but be interested.
“Not fair?” I asked.
Athena nodded.
“Yeah! We are all here to get an education and each of us has different strengths in different fields. One person can’t possibly know everything and they don’t need to.” She told me her opinion of the changes, seeming quite worked up about this. Her statement was true but false as well.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
“Yuji did get first place which means it’s not impossible.” I said the fact I saw. If even one person can prove that this is possible then the school has grounds for their system.
“Did he get a perfect score?” She asked.
I nodded.
“But still there are those people who are talented but also are bad at other things. I can’t see a single person being perfect at everything!” Athena said. It almost sounded as if this thought had passed to her even before this.
I nodded at her statement. Then I looked away.
“The whole reason seems to be to push that standard. Don’t you want to succeed?” I said my tone was serious but also I couldn’t help but say this.
“I only care about psychology. I don’t want to know the details of programming and be good at sports.” Athena was strong in her opinion.
“So you want to perfect your knowledge of psychology but not the other things.” I said.
Athena nodded.
“As I see it. Every person is good at something then bad at something else. It’s unnatural to be perfect in everything. Even if someone is, that would mean that they have put effort into knowing everything. To be like that they should learn from a very young age and the quantity of that information would take all of the precious time to dismiss their childhood and social lives. Emotionally they can't match up with that kind of knowledge. I don’t see it being possible.” Athena spoke of the issue she saw in this system.
I nodded as we walked through the hallways towards the development department class.
“You do make a point there.” My eyes trailed slightly.
“What do you think?” She looked up at me.
I shrugged my shoulders.
“I do believe this system is good. I don’t have a reason to mind it.”
“I mean you got tenth place in our whole grade!” She looked at me with those big green eyes.
“That was only a coincidence though.” I said to her downplaying this result.
“Coincidence? How so?” She asked me intrigued.
“My real talent is math. Numbers are one thing I will never get wrong. Everything in our lives can be sized down in numbers.” I said.
“Are you saying you guessed answers you didn’t know?” She suggested her eyes wide.
I nodded slightly.
“Oh?” She was surprised. “Now I sort of get why you were upset about your project.” She recalled my outburst the other day. “Though guessing the answers are still…” She looked impressed.
“Like you said we can’t be perfect at everything but we do have strong and weak spots.” I said. Completing her thoughts.
Athena looked impressed and satisfied.
“Do you have plans for today’s session?” She looked interested in what we would do on the project.
“How far have you come with the research?” I asked her this question first.
“I’m halfway through but it’s more or less writing everything down for you.” She answered as if what I tasked her to do was nothing.
“Then you can continue what you started and I will start to translate into numbers.” I told her the plan for today. She nodded understanding the assignment and we went to development class. Mr. Karin as usual was busy and had his head buried in work. I could see everyone in the seat except one person. The same person that confronted me moments ago Yuji. I looked at his seat briefly. Then turned to mine.
“Miss Aisaka?” Mr. Karin gazed upon me after noticing me entering the room.
I turned to him. “Yes, Mr. Karin?” I asked.
“I’m expecting progress today!” He spoke up firmly with me. Making me aware that failure is not an option.
I smiled at his expectation of me.
“Of course! I won’t repeat what I did before.” I said with determination in my eyes.
Mr. Karin only gave me a slight nod. Then I left towards my seat. Athena sat next to me.
The whole development class today was work. I made a lot of progress during the time given and at the end of the lesson Mr. Karin and I myself were left satisfied with the results. After that the whole day Yuji was absent which was not common for him. I did feel slightly uneasy but at the same time brushing it off as it wasn’t my business. The rest of the day and the lessons went as usual.
