Chapter 6 - Moonrise Pt 2

The next morning, the "new royal guard"—a mixture of former rogues and surrendered royalists—gathered in the courtyard. The atmosphere was one of tense uncertainty. The citizens of the lower caves were slowly emerging, their faces a mixture of curiosity and fear. They had spent their lives under a brutal regime, and a change in leadership, even a benevolent one, was a shock.

Celeste, Koa, and Kane stood on a raised dais. Alexandra stood slightly behind them, a picture of quiet support and gentle nobility.

Kane stepped forward, his voice projected across the courtyard. "Queen Evelyn has been banished. Her tyranny is over."

A ripple went through the crowd. Some cheered tentatively, while others watched the siblings with wary eyes. They saw Koa, the wolf with the powerful red aura. They saw Celeste, the rogue leader. And they saw Kane, the prince they barely knew. The stories of their power and prowess in the battle had already spread like wildfire through the caves.

Kane continued, "We offer you something Evelyn never did: balance. Justice. A kingdom where every wolf, rogue or royal, has a place. We are a council of four, and we swear to lead with integrity."

The questions began. A brave, older wolf from the lower city stepped forward. "What of the power? The magic we saw yesterday? Are we to be ruled by fear of a different kind of strength?"

The crowd grew silent, all eyes turning to Koa and Celeste.

Celeste stepped forward. "The powers we used," she said, her voice clear and strong, "are our parents' legacy. It is a strength we inherited, a tool for balance, not a weapon for control. We showed you yesterday that we use our strength to protect the innocent, not to crush them."

Koa moved to her side. "We didn't ask for this magic, but we accept its burden. We will never use it to rule by fear. We swear this on our parents’ memory."

The sincerity in their voices seemed to calm some of the fear, but a flicker of doubt remained in the eyes of the citizens. Trust, they all knew, would take time to build.

As the morning progressed, the three siblings began the arduous process of rebuilding. They set up temporary food distribution centers, using the stores Evelyn had hoarded. They appointed fair-minded wolves to positions of authority and sent messengers to the outer settlements to share the news of the liberation.

Alexandra, ever efficient, approached Kane with a scroll in hand. "A patrol just returned from the Stonefang border. They didn't find Evelyn, Kane. Just the ropes we used to bind her, cut and discarded."

Kane’s jaw tightened, the flicker of peace vanishing instantly. "She escaped."

Celeste and Koa joined them, their faces grim. The silence stretched between the three of them.

"She won't stop," Koa said, his hand automatically reaching for the hilt of his sword. "She'll gather any loyalists she can find, lick her wounds, and return with a vengeance."

Kane looked at the city below the dais, the hopeful faces of the citizens who thought their war was over. The peace they had worked so hard to create was already fragile.

"Then we prepare," Kane stated, the resolve in his voice hardening into steel. "We have the castle, we have a unified people, and we have our strength. This war isn't over yet, but we'll be ready for the second dawn."

Kane turned to Celeste, looking into her eyes. “Celeste?” he asked, his voice laced with sincerity.

She turned to him, “Yeah? What’s up?”. She tilted her head at him, smiling softly.

Kane took a deep breath, blushing slightly. “After all of this we went through together, I have to tell you something.” He said, breathing deeply. “What is it?” she asked, curious.

“I love you.” he breathed out.

The whole room went silent, everyone holding their breaths for Celeste’s answer.

Koa stiffened, his protective instincts kicking in. Alexandra saw this and scooted closer to him, their sides touching each other as they sat side by side watching and waiting for the answer.

  “I….” She started.

It seems as if the whole room froze, everyone leaning forward.

“I love you too,” She said, looking up, matching his eye contact and smiling softly.

Kanes eyes widened, his tail beginning to wag as he tried to compress it.

“Would you….Um….be my mate?” he asked, his tail still wagging slightly as he shifted to sit on it.

“Yes I would love to be your mate.” Celeste said, blushing and smiling.

“I’m so excited to rule with you soon…” He said quietly where only they could hear her.

  Celeste.exe stopped working

“Uh….. what’s wrong with her?” Koa asked, looking at Kane. Kane made eye contact with Koa, smiling with an innocent face.

The true test of their new reign had just begun.
