Chapter 6 - Psalm 8 4 - Pt X (Heavens Fall)

  24991126 | 0000

Heaven’s Fall | Terminus Est | Ground Zero

  30°04′12″ N

  31°21′03″ E

The hatch sealed shut with a hiss of air.

The Black Mamba’s engine cycled up.

Python’s fist lingered on it for half a second longer than necessary, knuckles white.

The gunship lurched and inertia threw him sideways.

The deck lights snapped from amber to red.

“Strap in!” Cobra shouted from the cockpit. “Manual override. Now!”

Boa was still on her knees.

Python grabbed her under the arms and hauled her upright.

  She didn’t resist.

  She didn’t move.

Her eyes were unfocused, breath shallow, lips moving without sound.

Python propped her in her seat.

“Hey—hey,” he snapped, strapping her in.

He slammed the harness home, yanked it tight until it locked.

“Stay with me. We’re not done.”

She flinched at the click, nodded absently.

Python vaulted into the co-pilot’s seat.

  Viper’s seat.

  “Sorry man,” he murmured.

He slapped the restraints closed as the ship shuddered violently.

Warning tones layered over one another.

Readout on structural stress, atmospheric shear, pressure anomalies.

  Freefall.

Cascading faster than the systems could clear them.

Cobra’s hands were already on the sticks.

“Hang on,” he said, voice flat. “This is going to hurt.”

  “We got incoming,” Python said.

  The boom hit.

  Not a sound at first.

  A force.

  The air forcefully parted.

They heard it before they see it.

  Rolling thunder.

  Multiple sonic booms.

  Python looked up.

  A star streaked towards them.

  “Kinetic Orbital at terminal velocity.”

“I know.” Cobra said as he turned the Black Mamba.

  “Punch it, Chief!”

  Cobra gunned the engine.

They lurched back into their seat.

The Black Mamba roared, streaking into the air.

  Python saw it.

  The falling star.

  The Kinetic Orbital struck.

The payload of a million thermonuclear warheads.

  The flash

  The explosion.

  Then the sound.

  The percussive shock.

The thousand upon thousand of explosions compressed into a singular, undulating roar that flattened the air and shoved it outward.

The barrage gates moaned torturously as they were annihilated.

The dammed river was displaced by the violent force.

A rolling, concussion ripped through the air.

  The gale struck their gunship.

The Black Mamba was shoved sideways, inertial dampeners screaming.

  Warning alarm blared.

  “Danger close, chief.” Python said.

“I know!” Cobra shouted, fighting to stabilise the gunship.

  An undulating ripple followed.

A wave that folded the Aquifer’s ruins.

It slammed into the outer ring.

The entire superstructure was ripping free.

Debris from the collapsing superstructure scattered into the air.

The hull rang as debris pattered upon the gunship’s belly.

  Cobra didn’t register.

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

  He shoved the throttles forward.

The engines howled, pitch climbing past safe tolerances as the Black Mamba surged upward, nose tilting hard.

The forward canopy filled with chaos.

Falling steel, twisted gantries, entire sections of the outer ring disintegrating in mid-air.

A colossal slab of reinforced concrete sheared loose and fell, rotating slowly, impossibly large. Cobra yanked the stick left, then right, threading the gunship through a narrowing corridor of falling architecture as crimson water erupted behind it.

Python watched as the barrage gates gave way.

  “Oh no.” he said.

The displaced water raced towards the outlet.

The blood-red water coursed through the seams of the destroyed gate.

  The flood entered Cairo.

“You seeing this, Chief?” Python said softly as the scale of the disaster hit him.

  “I see it.” Cobra replied.

The Black Mamba cleared the final ring just as the structure below collapsed inward, water and debris pouring into the breach like the mouth of a god opening wide.

The engines screamed as Cobra forced the ship higher, the gunship bucking violently as thermal updrafts and pressure waves battered its frame.

Boa cried out once—sharp, involuntary—as the ship banked hard to port, then steadied.

  They cleared the Ground Zero.

  Python turned around.

The Nile spread out beneath them.

The surface had turned crimson, the color racing outward in branching currents.

The bloodstain spreading faster than water should move.

It climbed banks, swallowed docks, overtook the natural green-blue tint.

Behind them, the Aquifer detonated in stages.

The rogue wave from the kinetic orbital knocked all eight intake towers out.

Secondary collapses, turbines tearing free, shockwaves rolling across the floodplain.

The thunder followed them up, over, and past, echoing across the city.

The Black Mamba punched through the last of the turbulence and climbed into clean air.

  Silence fell abruptly.

They could hear the engines’ stabilised humming and the ragged sound of their own breathing.

  Cobra eased the stick back.

  The Black Mamba leveled out.

  He didn’t look behind him.

  Boa bowed her head.

  No one spoke.

The gunship accelerated north, engines burning bright against the night sky.

It engaged its shimmering cloak and faded.

  L’Aurore | River Nile | Floodzone Cairo

  30°00′36″ N

  31°08′12″ E

The deck of L’Aurore was subduedly quiet.

The professional calm that followed catastrophe once the urgent decisions had been made.

Lucien and his men breathed easier the moment they cast off.

The ship rode the dark water steadily now, engines idling low, deck lights softened to navigation hues.

Far behind them, the glow over Cairo still bruised the horizon, but here the night had reclaimed its composure.

They witnessed the destruction of the Aquifer Water Treatment and Hydroelectric Facility.

They saw the River Nile turned blood-red.

Lucien briefly spoke a prayer, an Old World incantation.

They were too fa away for the flood to reach them.

But Lucien held no illusion about the city.

  They have work to do.

  Shirley had changed.

The gown was gone, replaced by her simple sundress in the afternoon.

Her luggage sat neatly by her side, compact and unremarkable.

Lucien sighed, she act as if she was departing any other city on any other night.

Prince Soren Fehr walked beside her toward the waiting Monacan Envoy VTOL, its rotors already spinning in a muted hum.

The craft’s lights cast long, clean lines across the flight pad, illuminating Lucien and Bastien standing at attention near the forward ramp.

Soren spoke as they walked, his tone measured, courteous.

“I’ve arranged for you to route through Hamad International Airport, in Qatar.” he said. “Doha remains operational, and Monaco still has corridor priority there. From Qatar, you’ll be flown onward to City 06 - Paris.”

Shirley nodded. “Thank you,” she said softly. “For… everything.”

  He inclined his head.

“All departures from Cairo are grounded,” Soren continued. “You will travel on our diplomatic envoy charter. This was the cleanest solution.”

A brief pause. “I wish it were under better circumstances.”

“It would have to be enough.” She smiled.

They stopped at the foot of the ramp.

Lucien met Soren’s glance, reading the unspoken instruction instantly.

Bastien remained still, hands clasped behind his back, eyes scanning the deck out of habit rather than necessity.

Soren turned to Shirley and took her hand.

  His touch was gentle.

“I enjoyed our time together,” he said. “Truly.”

  She looked up at him.

“If the fates are kind,” he added quietly, “we will meet again.”

Shirley’s lips curved into a small, genuine smile. “If the fates are kind.”

She hesitated, then he lips curled into a smile.

  “You’re not coming with me?”

She asked, a twinkle in her eyes.

  Soren shook his head.

“A most tempting offer.” he said. “But alas, I am to remain here.”

“The search-and-rescue coordination begins immediately. The Egyptian authorities have requested and accepted Monaco’s assistance. Our navy is already en route.”

There was no pride in his voice.

  No regret.

  Just acceptance.

“A pact,” he finished. “One I intend to keep.”

  Shirley nodded.

  Soren turned to Lucien then.

  Lucien stepped forward slightly.

  “Sir,” he said, already prepared.

“Escort Miss Tempess all the way to the gates,” he said. “Personally.”

Lucien inclined his head. “With pleasure.”

For a moment, none of them moved.

  Then Shirley stepped closer.

She rose on her toes and kissed Soren.

Soft at first, then deeper, deliberate.

A kiss without urgency, without fear.

A kiss meant to be remembered rather than prolonged.

  Bastien stifled a giggle.

  Lucien merely smiled in amusement.

  When she stepped back.

Soren’s composure slipped but a fraction.

  “Safe travels,” he said.

She squeezed his hand once more, then turned and walked up the ramp.

She gave Bastien, Romain and Alexis each a hug.

  A genuine, heartwarming embrace.

They returned it, and bade her a safe journey.

Lucien can tell they genuinely liked the girl.

The VTOL’s hatch closed with a gentle seal.

  Engines spooled higher.

The craft lifted cleanly from the deck, rising into the night with practiced ease before banking away toward the east.

Soren watched until it was no longer visible.

Behind him, Romain, the older and longest-serving of his bodyguards, coughed softly.

“The one that got away, eh, boss?” he said, not unkindly.

“Don’t worry, boss,” Alexis said, “I have a feeling you will see her again.”

  Soren smiled.

“Back to work, gentlemen.” He said.

  The deck lights dimmed.

  And the night moved on.
