Conquest 65 – Hungry Expansion (4)

My new gnoll minions were looking at me curiously. I was wondering why until I noticed that I was giving off my more expressive smiles.

“Uhm…so what happens now?” One of them asked. “Should we call you Lord Vladimir like those humans do?”

I casually waved my claw at them and clarified. “Call me whatever you like. So long as you understand who you serve.”

“Very well then for us, Chieftain is a position of our leader and so we shall call you that.”

I nodded in satisfaction. “I like it, sure go ahead and call me that if you like. In the meantime, for everyone’s safety it’s best we keep you here for now. I’ll be sure to send in daily food to help fill your appetite in the meantime. Better double hunt quests to gather enough meat as well.”

They nodded with no voice of complaint. Once I was sure they understood I walked out but not before they asked me one more question. “Chieftain, what do you plan on doing?”

I turned my head around and answered. “Why, build a farm. That should help resolve the food situation, right? ~”

They got wide-eyed and confused but before they could question further, I had already left. If this was going to work, then I’m going to be quite busy. As soon as I walked out of the castle, I was suddenly greeted by a familiar silver haired woman. She looked very pissed off while tightly clenching her staff.

…Right, I completely forgot that she was still here.

“There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you since I helped with the civilians! Now I’ve been hearing that you have those vicious gnolls locked up at the castle?”

She started to tap her foot in annoyance as she continued. “And when I tried to get in I was denied access? Explain.”

I gave a bit of a sigh as I watched her glare down at me before I begun to explain. “I told my soldiers that only staff for the castle are allowed access for the time being while we are still in the process of setting things up. I’ll talk to them and allow you access to some of the castle areas.”

She raised an eyebrow from my response. “…I guess that is a decent reason and thank you I guess. Now can you explain to me what is going on?”

Thus, I recapped what happened. From how the negotiations with the gnolls went to how I single handedly quell the situation and had them locked up for the time being for their own good. I also told her about setting up their home territory to include farming to help to quench their hunger better.

When she heard about the plan she scoffed at the idea. “Are you kidding? You expect me to believe that you could get those savages to plant and farm? They would sooner eat their own before doing such laborious work!”

I simply shrugged at your comment while giving off a small smirk. “Who’s to say, would be fun to find out and if it works out that would be a benefit for everyone don’t you think?”

The silvered haired priestess shook her head as her answer, clearing showing her disbelief over my plan. “Since you are bent on going with this crazy plan, I imagine you have an idea on what to do first?”

I wagged my claw finger with a mocking tone to it. “Of course, I was planning on finding a solution to our food problems for my new empire so I had already done some research on agriculture to see if I could find an answer. ~”

Well… most of that was passing interest in my old world when I thought that having some basic understandings of agriculture would be useful for my dreams of conquest. I’m glad that I did, now I can apply it in this world and relieve our food problems. The question now is which crops would be best suited for my needs.

I doubt I would find the answer in this privileged kingdom, so I figured the next step would be to return to Greyston and see if the villagers there had some ideas. I instinctively remember seeing a few areas with fields.

Katherine could only shake her head in disbelief. “I find it hard to believe that creature like you would ever engage in reading. Not even counting on the fact you are a monster, from what I can gather on your personality so far, I don’t see you much as the reading type.”

Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.

I confidently smirked while pointing at myself. “I’m chock full of surprises Priestess. Now are you coming back to town with me or not? ~”

She sighed in resignation as she responded. “If I must. But what of the Gnolls? It would be dangerous if they were to break free.”

“I doubt that would happen but just in case it does, Damian would be able to subdue them. And V would be able to warn if they got hostile.” I reassured her.

The silver haired woman started to voice her concerns. “This V is the goblin child that hung out with the B ranked adventurer, right? Is it wise to have such a young monster close to such dangers? And speaking of the Bear Beastman, I have to ask what was with that displa-”

“Anyway, since you gotten a good look on my kingdom, I would like your thoughts!” I quickly interrupted her, wanting to change the subject.

She was about to say something but let it go before answering my question. “I must admit, I was shocked to see its people already starting to accept you. In fact, they seemed surprisingly relieved.”

“It probably helped that their previous king was a useless fat bastard.” I pointed out with no signs of filtering out my thoughts.

  “That…. I can’t disagree with….”

After making sure to take care of any immediate issues as well as letting my wolves properly rest, we both left the kingdom for now. Damian and V waving bye while the rest of them returned to their duties. But before leaving the borders I made a quick stop to give the Gnolls’ dead companion a proper burial not too far off near the forest they came from.

Katherine was surprisingly quiet, giving a silent prayer as I finished the burial before setting off.

It took less than a day to return to Greyston, everything was running as smoothly as I left it. No sooner did I return did I hear a familiar booming voice calling out to me.

  “Boss, you’re back!!”

Mordred ran out of the town to greet me with some of my other minions following behind. They looked just as happy to see me back as Mordred was.

“I still can’t quite grasp why they would follow you so earnestly.” The priestess stated. “But at the very least it seems you are working hard to earn it.”

Huh, was that a compliment just now? Didn’t think the lady had it in her, maybe she’s starting to warm up to me. She just might even fi- ~

But she interrupted my thoughts with a continuation of her comments. “Don’t get me wrong, I am still very distrustful of you little lizard.”

…Hah! She definitely meant to get me mad there. Well, two can play in that game. I nudged at her neck with my scaled elbow. “Right right, got to make sure this ‘little lizard’ isn’t up to any dastardly deeds.”

“Don’t push it or I’ll make you regret it.” She said with a restrained anger, her eyes closed but I swear I could see a vein popping on her head. ~

I raised my hands up in fake submission. Something I made sure she noticed. She huffed in annoyance before bringing up another topic. “Now what is you will you do with the agriculture aspect?”

“Already have a henchman working on gathering the intel I needed.”

  “But when did you-”

No sooner before she could ask, a familiar vulture in a fancy attire spoke from behind her, surprising her. “Well well, I heard the rumors about our special guest but I never thought it would be a beautiful lady like yourself.”

My dashing vulture henchman gracefully stepped to the priestess’ view and tipped his signature hat in greeting. “Nice to meet you, the names Zephyrus but you can call me Zeph if that’s more to your liking. ~”

The priestess was taken back but quickly recomposed herself. She held her staff in a dignified matter before introducing herself. “Greetings, I am the Priestess Katherine for the goddess of Purity Astrea.”

Zeph looked impressed before giving off a smile, holding his hat in way to partially obscure his eyes. “Oh my, we have such a high-ranking individual from the church. I better give the proper respect to you.”

There was a small superior look on her face for a moment before returning to her dignified look. “Glad to see there are people here with a sense of manners.”

The smile in the vulture Beastman’s face widened with a subtleness only I seem to pick up on. “Forgive us, the bossman just can’t help but speak his mind without any filter to it. He probably called you stuff like naggy, loud, and unbearable.”

Katherine seemed happy to hear his apology, though I doubt she realized how he essentially mocked her right to her face. Good one Zeph. Veehahahahaha~

Deciding I had enough fun for now I addressed Zeph on the matter. “Did you get the info I require Zeph.”

Zephyrus turned and looked down at me while raising a talon up, holding to a few small bags. “Got it right here as requested bossman. The fastest and easiest crops to grow in the forest area.”

He waved his free talon signaling a group of familiar stooges to appear. I noticed that they had started to wear more hooded attires that covered their faces while wielding twin knives to their sides, making me think of them more like thieves or assassins. It seems like they have been getting training from Zeph in the art of subterfuge. Since they’ve been getting special training, I should invest some time in getting some special gear for them as well.

  “Here you go chief.”

“All the seeds you’ll need to grow your crops”

“Though I doubt this plan is going to work….”

…. Some things just won’t change huh? Well, I don’t mind too much.

I took the bags and checked their contents. Sure enough, there were some crops I can recognize. But just to be sure I Inspect them to learn more details about them.
