Chapter 20: Bigger Fish

Avryn and Valoche made it to the station. Jonah had a look of determination on him. He mustered his courage and was ready to end this once and for all. Tvira was the first to acknowledge Avryn and Valoche’s arrival, and waved to them.

Rinna introduced them to the officer in charge, Officer Kinsleigh. He introduced himself and gave an update to the situation. Jonah’s family was safe. The station received enough evidence to perform an arrest for Felix. They were going to do a raid at his compound. Avryn handed him the ID with the address.

“The good thing is we’re legally allowed to help the police as students of the Academy,” Rinna explained.

Surround the compound, find Felix, and arrest him, sounded easy enough. There was one thing Avryn wanted to add.

“If you don’t mind, I think Jonah should lead the raid,” he gestured to him.

  Jonah nodded,

  “I’m ready.”

Police cruisers powered by magic crystals escorted them to the compound. They travelled in silence as they drove their way across the quiet streets. The full moon was at its apex at this time. They stopped at the address and were met by a building. Its banner was removed, and all of its lights were off. Officer Kinsleigh made a signal and the cars were spread out to block the front entrance.

“Out by the farthest door,” he whispered.

Jonah suggested they take the building from the back entrance. The police can handle the front. Kinsleigh relayed the orders to his fellow policemen. The others snuck their way in through. Fired shots signaled the start of the assault on the compound.

Valoche charged in and bursted through the door. Avryn and the rest followed suit and helped cleared the first floor.

“Fixer Felix, we have you surrounded. Turn yourself in now,” Kinsleigh’s voice echoed and boomed from a voice amplifying device.

Their combined forces were enough to clear the ground floor and forced the loan sharks to retreat to the upper levels. Arrests were made on the spot. Jonah was the first to head up the stairs.

Resistance met them with more gunshots. Bullets flew and peppered across the hallways. Valoche called upon the spirits to become his shield and was the first to meet them in melee. Tvira ran off his back and laid a flurry of arrows against the criminals. She spotted the main target, Felix making a run for it to the upper levels.

“Your target’s getting away,” she pointed.

Jonah, Avryn, Rinna, and Jenilah squeezed through the fight and entered the third floor. Felix’s heavies met them, sledgehammers in hand. Avryn took the initiative and fired off debilitating explosive blasts with Lerosa’s shots. Jenilah followed up with consecutive shots from her shotgun. The heavies retaliated with a smoke screen.

A thick cloud of dark grey smoke gave them pause. Avryn saw the head of a hammer aimed for Jenilah. He intercepted it, using the gunblade’s shot to enhance his parry and overpower it. Another hammer aimed for Rinna was intercepted by Kiria. Her hologram shield sparked with light, its integrity tested against brute force.

“I found an opening,” Jonah pointed to the next set of stairs.

“Go, we’ll handle this,” Rinna exclaimed.

“Alright, just you and me, champ,” Avryn smirked.

They ran up to the third and final floor. Felix fired off double pistols in an effort to scare them off. His eyes had the look of familiarity when it was on Jonah’s face. He took cover.

“Ah, you’re the Jonah boy, aren’t ya? All I did was help you, and now you’re breaking my heart, kid,” he reasoned.

“I heard all those people’s stories, you won’t have hold over them and me ever again,” Jonah charged.

Two bullets found their way into Jonah’s shoulder and leg. They forced him to fall to the ground.

  “Shit,” Avryn muttered.

He tried to come out to help but was sprayed with more bullets. Jonah groaned and clutched at his wounds.

“All this could’ve been avoided if you had just paid your god damned debt!” Felix shouted from across the room.

Avryn grabbed Jonah and dragged him into cover. He tossed a grenade to Felix’s direction in order to flush him out. A loud boom sent concrete, glass and rebar flying. He performed a quick patch up on Jonah, and prevented him from further bleeding out.

  “Watch out!” Jonah warned him.

Avryn turned and met a pipe to the face. He was forced away from Jonah. Felix whacked away at Avryn, who was feverishly blocking with his arms. He needed to do something fast before his bones get broken. He mustered a kick to the groin and stunned Felix. He returned the favor by hitting him with his own metal pipe.

The boss of the loan sharks was on his back, bruised and grinning,

“You think by taking me down, all crime’s gonna stop? You’re gonna regret doing me in when a bigger, badder cat rolls into this stinking city!”

Avryn looked down and the man had a vest with several bombs attached. The timer was at three seconds and ticking down. Jonah mustered all his strength, grabbed Avryn and ran as fast as he could. The wounds screamed for him to stop, but he wouldn’t. A loud, adrenaline-filled cry gave him the push to cover more ground before the vest went off.

A large explosion took nearly a third of the top floor out. Shards of glass shattered and sprinkled down like rain drops. There was nothing left of the man known as The Flicker. Jonah and Avryn were on the floor, and barely out of the explosion’s radius. Dust, smoke and small pieces of concrete covered their bodies.

Avryn was the first to sit up, he thanked Jonah for his quick thinking. Officer Kinsleigh found them. He surveyed what happened and called for the medics. Survivor’s on Felix’s side surrendered afterwards. The explosion was the signal for the end.

The gang regrouped outside. Police vans and ambulances were called to the scene. Avryn observed the building, now a smoking ruin.

“Well, I guess that makes your account settled. And everyone else’s,” he commented.

Jonah offered his thanks but was given praise in return. He was commended for his initiative and quick thinking. Avryn advised him to take no more debts, and start to do things with his own power. Jonah nodded along, taking it to heart. There was one more thing, according to Avryn.

“Harver would’ve loved being a part of this,” he regretted in his place.

“There’ll be plenty of criminals to stop, don’t worry,” Leifren patted him on the back. “But for now, let’s celebrate today’s hero, Mr. Jonah.”
