Before Suna dealt with the cabin where Dua was, he drew his bow and aimed at where Jack was. Chimes of steel rasped against each other, and a clink resounded as steel thrust after thrust struck.

He strained his Eagle Eyes, flicker of clashing metals rang as Jack kept jabbing his spear at the Shieldnites, which both shrugged off the damage. Suna could see that the Runebearers were able to cause cracks within the Shieldnite’s armor. But that would be far too slow, as they were on a timer.

Suna nocked an Emberwind Arrow and let it tear straight into one of the Shieldnites. It flew true and struck the Shieldnite’s back, causing it to stumble forward. But when the dust settled, it still stood strong. Suna licked his lips and began drawing again—the Shieldnite turned toward him, and it hit by an Emberwind Arrow that exploded on its helmet.

Spell arrows zapped through the far distance between them. With his third arrow, Suna heard a great crack of steel.

The Shieldnite staggered around, about to collapse. It turned its body, and Suna was able to see its skin begin to turn with Drowfication; however, before the skill could take place, Jack rammed his spear straight into the armor fracture that Suna had created. The Shieldnite’s body jerked, and it collapsed. The other one had been taken down by Jack also, who took advantage of the time Suna had bought him.

Without a second to waste, Jack threw his spear, and he soared through the air, bizarrely using his spear as a glider. He landed near Suna effortlessly and faced the cabin Dua was.

  “You’re injured?” Jack asked.

“I drank one Potion,” Suna said, “But other than that, no–not really.”

“Good, good,” Jack muttered, crouching, examining the still faraway house. “We don’t really need to go in there, right?”

“No, we don’t,” Suna said. He drew an Emberwind Arrow; this time, he Flint Drew it, letting the tail of flame blossom at the end of his spell arrow. With his Brimhat, Suna commanded the fire to spread around, instead of concentrating it as it usually does.

The magic blared at his fingertip, and he sucked in a breath as the heat began to sear the side of his face.

Jack shielded himself with one hand, nervously glancing at Suna.

Suna discharged the arrow, and sand rushed apart as if it were dust.

The arrow streaked like a fire comet, blitzing straight at the cabin. When his fire was about to connect, however–a shield of pure white, so transparent it was almost invisible, blocked his arrow. They surged against each other, causing an explosion of magic in a wave of energy, consuming the frail wooden wall of the cabin.

Wood shattered from the mere quake of the two magics.

The shield broke, and so did Suna’s Emberwind Arrow. This caused the cabin to be crushed apart. A heap of dust billowed as a result, and Suna already drew another arrow.

Inside the dust, he could see the outline of a feminine figure.

  Just one of them.

Suna quickly aligned his shot and let loose another Emberwind Arrow. As his arrow darted, another shield blocked it, causing the same magical explosion–pushing Dua’s dress against her figure.

The Undead Lantern Mistress was on both knees and her back to Suna. She was cradling the red Lantern, and she muttered something.

Suna could hear a soft, melodic song escaping her mouth, and the Undead body shuddered. Emotion brimming on her shoulders, and Suna could see how desperate she was. A sign of humanity to the Undead.

“I’ll get close,” Jack declared, prepping his spear to throw again.

“What? I can just shoot her!”

“She shouldn’t be able to do that,” Jack exclaimed, pointing at the white shield that appeared out of thin air and managed to block another Emberwind Arrow. “Not while she’s focused on bringing her sister back, at least. There must be some disadvantage to it.”

It sounded like he was not too sure.

But, of course, Suna knew they couldn’t keep going like this. If this sister awakened, then what chance would they have?

  “Alright... be careful!”

“Really, Suna? Careful? When we chase her all the way here? Just two of us?”

  Fair point.

Jack threw his spear, and with it his body followed. The Tiefling launched with body outstretched. Blocking him now were shards of bright light, similar to those that had chased Suna earlier.

The shards flew forward in a burst of sudden speed. Jack veered away to the right, but the shards followed his flight path. The Tiefling then skidded to the ground and rolled. Jack spun his spear as he made space, trying to block the shards.

Suna, meanwhile, had already drawn another Emberwind Arrow, and shot straight at Dua’s back.

He glanced at Jack, who pushed the shards away with the small tornado formed with his spear.

His arrow zipped forward, and the shield that was blocking it earlier was nowhere to be seen. Instead, it appeared much closer to Dua, who was still kneeling on the cabin floor with the wreckage of the houses all around her. Again, the collision pushed away various objects, but Dua was unbothered. When rocks and wood were about to fly at her, an invisible shield protected the Undead.

Suna fired again, and this time, a small pinpoint shield of light stopped his arrow, fully containing the explosion.

He kept launching arrows, now with more focus on quantity, but none managed to pierce it.

Cold sweat began to drip down Suna’s neck. What should they even do?

He needed to get closer. Suna couldn’t think of any other way. Besides, the shield moved closer to Dua, even though Jack had taken away the shards. So it must’ve gotten weaker.

Suna ran forward. Gale Step propelled him. He nocked another Emberwind Arrow. Stopping just meters away from Dua. He decided this was as good a place as any; he would maintain his passive here. Suna discharged his arrow, blasting the invisible shield that couldn’t fully contain the explosion this time.

He drew again, and spell arrows appeared from thin air. Motes of light formed into the deadly arrows. Suna released them, each striking a fiery sizzle as they tore through the sky—they blasted againts the shield that appeared, blocking them, and the crack of flame could be heard resounding through the air. They colored the darkness each time they clashed. He released more and more arrows, and each time they got closer to Dua.

Dust covered the Undead now. Suna could see she was still praying; her body seemed desperate, as the song got even faster.

“Uzu, uzu, uzu,” the Undead Lantern Mistress muttered melodiously, kicking up a beat.

Jack rushed straight into Dua. The [Spearbearer] spun his spear once, banishing the dust, and thrust forward. His spearpoint clashed with the invisible shield. Jack delivered barrages of thrust againts it, and the barrier broke apart. Suna now saw an opening–he let out a wide open grin, and fired his Emberwind Arrow straight at Dua.

His arrow flew, rushing straight and impaling the Undead Mistress's back.

Dua gasped, her voice was cut off. “Uz—” The undead body shook, and she began chanting again.

His Emberwind Arrow somehow did not burn through Dua; the spell was nullified. Suna drew another Emberwind and shot it at Dua’s head.

The Emberwind arrow struck true, snapping the Undead Mistress’s head. And in a violent jerk, the Mistress was somehow still alive and moving.

Suna drew a sharp breath. Once again, he reminded that this was a monster that had been an unbeatable foe to countless Thiefmasters; they needed to take it down now while it was weakened.

Jack drove his spear into Dua’s back where her heart was supposed to be, piercing deep into her, but Jack was not able to impale through.

Dua screamed, her voice shrilled out, and Suna, who was drawing his enhanced Sootroot Arrow, pushed back. His feet moved, now his passive need to be rebuilt again.

“How dare you, how dare—” Dua snarled. “Little thief, thief!” The Undead bellowed. The force of wind, similar to a banshee, pushed Jack away in a sudden wave. The Tiefling blasted off like a flick of wind, Like Dua had kicked him in his gut. The Runebearer rolled near, and rose groggily. In Jack's stomach, a deep gash opened, and the [Spearbearer] fell, Jack’s hand moved to drink one of the potions it had saved up.

Dua's head turned, finally faced Suna. Tear ran down her cheeks, and a stricken, almost purplish face greeted him. A gasp escape her, and the Undead slowly walked back while still keeping her gaze on him.

She cradled the red lantern, which no longer glow so brightly.

The Undead staggered with each step; her face was afraid, angry, and sad at the same time.

Suna let loose his Sootroot arrow, and send it snapping in a high arc.

Dua’s eyes followed it just as Suna thought it would. A white shield began to form across her vision, trying to block his arrow.

The moment his Sootroot arrow was blocked, Suna sent forth his Emberwind Arrow. It blazed through the air straight at Dua.

The Undead Mistress managed to look at it and lift one hand to direct her magic, but the moment she did so–Jack did the same, and the [Spearbearer]’s spear that had been lodged at Dua’s chest jerked–followed by cries of pain from the Undead.

Dua wailed, clenching her jaw, she had no shield. “No—”

Emberwind Arrow blazed straight at the red glowing lantern. Both the spell arrow and the lantern clashed in fiery resonance, emitting a wave of energy that shook the atmosphere around the Undead.

“No–No! Uzu, please! You need to come—”

An explosion erupted, blossoming like a red flower. Suna shielded himself, and Jack was in front of him. The [Spearbearer] moved with deadly precision. He banished the smoke and revealed the Undead Mistress whose clothes were ruined.

She fell to the ground, clutching the red lantern that was faintly glowing.

“Uzu,” she cried, softly, “please…” Her voice was begging, desperation painfully resonating.

Jack recalled his spear and launched it again, impaling the Undead's shoulder. Her body snapped up with a wail.

Suna could see her face, now no longer looking like a monster.

Still, he released his enhanced Sootroot arrow. It sliced through the air and ruptured her neck. A vine bloomed up, as if it were not enough. The vines tied themselves around the Undead's neck and began choking her.

Dua's body jerked as it tried to battle away the vines. Suna was about to fire another one. The Undead, in the last moment of her life, tapped her head against the red lantern.

“Stop it!” Jack screamed, but a burst of red light blinded them.

A thin, stinging pain stung inside his head. Suna blinked, and he realized he was kneeling on the ground, with Jack beside him.

He rose, only to see a veiled woman sitting primly in a dark dress, and her face hidden beneath that seemingly thin yet effective dark veil. In her hand was a scythe, so long it was doubtful she could wield it.

And in her lap was The Undead Mistress Dua. Dead.

“Oh, sister…” Uzu cried, caressing her dead sister's face. Her hand moved and ripped away the vines around her neck.

Slowly, ever slowly. She looked at Suna and Jack.

Outlines of red eyes under the dark veil, circled like a doodle. It was alien, yet one did need to be an undead to tell the emotion behind those eyes.
