Chapter 15 - Endure the Flame

A blinding flash engulfed him as he stepped through the door. Before his vision could clear, Hector doubled over, coughing violently. His lungs burned as superheated air flooded his chest. Every breath carried the sharp sting of sulfur, scraping his throat raw as it filled him.

The heat was overwhelming. It felt as though his lungs were blistering from the inside. He remembered several times where he had been caught in large fires in the past. The heat had been intense even in his work gear. What he was feeling right now though was beyond anything he had ever experienced.

Without hesitation, he activated Emergency Heal. The familiar green aura wrapped around his body and seeped inward. Relief came slowly as the damage to his lungs reversed; the burning receding just enough for him to breathe normally again.

“This floor is not messing around,” he muttered.

Before him stretched a vast, sandy wasteland. Jagged rocks thrust upward at irregular angles; their surfaces blackened and cracked. In the distance, a towering mountain loomed, its peak glowing with molten orange and red. Lava pulsed near the summit, painting the sky in ominous hues that flickered like a living heartbeat.

With a grunt, Hector started forward. If there was a boss here, it would definitely be waiting at the mountain it was the only thing that made logical sense

The heat intensified with every step. Sweat poured freely as the ground radiated warmth through his boots then without warning, the sand erupted beside him.

A massive tail burst upward and slammed into his leg before he could react. A stinger pierced his thigh, driving deep. Fire raced through his body as an unknown substance flooded his veins.

  “Damn it!”

Instinctively, he forced Emergency Heal into higher output. The pain dulled, though it did not vanish completely. A warning flared across his vision.

[You are infected with Volcanic Vein Burster venom]

  [Venom Effect: Severe burning sensation]

  [-10 Health per second]

Sand cascaded away as a massive black scorpion emerged, its chitinous body glistening with heat. The creature surged forward, pincers snapping wide. Hector caught the pincers with both hands, muscles straining as he fought to gain control. Hands of Triage flared and one pincer exploded in a spray of ichor and shattered chitin.

He followed with a rapid barrage of punches to its head. The hardened shell cracked and the creature collapsed in a heap.

He barely had time to draw breath as the sand ahead churned violently yet again. Five more massive scorpions erupted from beneath the surface, each one as large and dangerous as the first.

  [Analyze Creature: Volcanic Vein Scorpion]

  Classification: Beast

  Tier: F

  Level Range: 25

  Warning:

High output healing while venom is active may result in catastrophic internal damage.

  Gradual treatment advised.

  Hector grimaced.

“Great. So brute force healing is off the table.”

As the scorpions advanced, realization struck him. He brought his hands together, static snapping between his fingers. His intent sharpened, focused on harm rather than restoration.

Vital Conduction activated, and a green arc of lightning erupted from his hands and slammed into the nearest scorpion. The energy burned straight through its head, then leapt to the next, and the next.

The battlefield lit up as crackling energy chained between targets. Pops and sharp detonations echoed across the sand as each creature convulsed under the assault. Within moments, the scorpions collapsed, bodies smoking and twitching. Experience flooded into him, but it was a short-lived victory as another alert appeared.

  [Warning: Extreme Environmental Conditions]

[Super-Heated Air: 1 Burning Damage per minute]

[Prolonged exposure will increase damage severity]

  Hector exhaled slowly.

“Well, that's not good, I am sure my healing can keep up with the damage, but I have no idea what other monsters I am going to find out here.”

He pressed onward, but the terrain was brutal. Loose sand burned his skin through his boots, and every breath chipped away at his health pool. Only constant healing kept him functional, and even that had limits.

Eventually, he reached a wide river of magma. The molten flow surged violently, glowing orange and red. No bridge crossed it and it was to wide to jump across..

Along the riverbank, however, strange roots and hardy plants clung to life. His eyes widened in realization.

  “Ignis Blood roots!”

An idea formed, Hector remembered the time he had tested Hands of Triage on a tree. He didn’t understand how it worked, but his spells could do more than just heal flesh and cause obscene amounts of damage, somehow, they could also expedite the growth of plants.

He targeted one of the roots and released a controlled burst of Vital Conduction, focusing on growth and reinforcement. The root responded immediately, extending outward several inches. When it touched the lava, a bloom erupted from it, flourishing rather than burning.

  “This might actually work.”

He increased output, guiding the arc toward the opposite bank. The root followed the energy, stretching farther, inch by inch.

  Snap!

The plant broke and vanished into the molten river.

  “Damn it.”

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

After several more attempts, one root finally reached the far side. Hector carefully connected additional roots, weaving them together over the next couple hours until a narrow but passable bridge formed. He tested the structure and it creaked under his weight. With his health steadily draining, hesitation was not an option.

“Just get across and pray nothing decides to eat me,” he muttered.

He moved quickly and surprisingly the bridge held. For once, nothing attacked him. Then another alert appeared.

[Burning Damage: 2 Health per minute]

“Today just keeps getting better, I am still pretty salty I never got that fire resistance, hell even heat resistance would be good.”

He pushed forward, fighting through more creatures as he advanced. Flaming bats swooped from above, lava spitting slugs ambushed him; wurms burst from the ground with snapping maws. For such an extreme environment, the place was jam packed with wildlife looking to eat him.

At last, he reached the base of the mountain. A moat of lava encircled it, shallow enough to leap across. Beyond it rose a path of red brick winding upward toward the summit.

"That odd, did someone in the dungeon create a path? That doesn’t make much sense, so I am going to assume it's either a trap or someone in here was really bored.”

He knew he was coming near the end of his journey to locate the boss. This mountain was taller than all the other, it also seemed the closer he got the higher the level of heat increased. Sure, that could just be because it is a volcano, but he was going to trust his instincts. Pulling up his status, he finally reviewed the damage and growth accumulated so far.

The gains were undeniable. He invested quickly, allocating ten points each into Agility and Vitality, bringing both to 30. The remaining four went into Perception. The rush of stat gains surged through him.

Then the world changed. Faint wisps drifted through the air, barely visible before. The colors sharpened; depth and detail snapped into focus as though a veil had been lifted. Looking at his hands, he saw thin strands of green energy flowing from them.

  “Is that mana?”

He released a quick arc of Vital Conduction. The wisps responded instantly, clearer than before, control felt easier, more intuitive. A slow grin spread across his face.

  “So I was under-investing.”

With renewed confidence, Hector leapt across the lava moat and stepped onto the path leading upward. Whatever waited at the summit, he would be ready.

The higher he climbed, the worse the heat became. Every breath scorched his lungs. Every step felt like grinding against his bones. Emergency Heal circulated constantly, knitting flesh together fast enough to endure the punishment.

  SPEW.

A streak of molten orange tore through the air in front of him. Hector twisted aside as lava erupted from the ground, splashing and hissing where it struck stone. The earth beneath his feet came alive, magma surging upward in violent bursts. There was no blocking it so instead he ran.

Globules of lava struck his skin, burning on contact, only for new flesh to form seconds later as Emergency Heal strained to keep up. He shoved more mana into the spell; jaw clenched as he fought to maintain control.

Thankfully, the living magma did not chase him far. After fifty yards, the molten earth slowed, then sank back into the ground.

Hector slowed, chest heaving. The environment alone was killing him. Mana drained constantly just to remain functional. Health ticked down no matter how careful he was. Still, there was no choice, and even if there was, he knew he would still be here, hunting for the next challenge regardless, so he pushed forward.

By the halfway point, his resources were dangerously low. He collapsed against a jagged outcropping, scanning the terrain before allowing himself to rest. With shaking hands, he drank several mana potions in quick succession, and his mana barely stabilized.

“If this keeps up, I might not even make it to the boss before I burn away.”

The air in front of him warped as if someone nearby had responded to his complaining.

  [Deviation Detected]

  [Adaptive Conditioning (F) Has Activated]

[Adaptive Conditioning (F) is operating outside Pantheon mandated parameters]

  [Error]

  [Error]

  Hector groaned. “Great. What now?”

[Adaptive Conditioning (F) has reached Level 50]

  [New Feature Unlocked]

[Adaptive Conditioning may now assist in learning skills aligned with the Deviant Path based on sustained feats]

  [Feats Detected]

[Hector Renegade has endured twelve hours of continuous spellcasting, healing, and extreme environmental exposure]

  [Suitable skill identified]

[Would you like to learn Life Mantle (F)?]

  “Yes,” he answered immediately.

  The skill unfolded within him.

[New Skill Learned: Life Mantle (F)]

  Type: Sustained Aura

  Activation: Continuous while active

  Cost: Low, constant mana drain

  Description:

Life Mantle converts healing-aligned energy into a protective field surrounding the user. The mantle reduces environmental damage, stabilizes hostile conditions, and provides minor regenerative support to the user and designated allies within range.

The mantle responds to sustained healing output and control rather than raw power.

  Effects:

  • Reduces damage from environmental hazards

  •
  • Grants minor passive health regeneration

  •
  • Extends protective and restorative effects to nearby allies

  •

  Limitations:

  • Effectiveness scales with control and focus

  •
  • High strain environments increase mana cost

  •
  • Does not fully negate direct attacks

  •

  Pantheon Note:

  Most healers mend wounds.

Some learn to endure the world itself.

The heat receded instantly and a faint golden and green aura surrounded his body. Unlike Emergency Heal, Life Mantle felt anchored, stable.

“Alright, not sure how that happened but who am I to complain?”

  [Title Earned: Living Bastion]

  Living Bastion:

A title granted to those who transform endurance into protection.

  +10 to Endurance

  Effects:

  • Increased effectiveness of sustained defensive and healing abilities

  •
  • Environmental damage reduction while maintaining active healing

  •
  • Allies within healing range gain increased stability and resistance

  •

Hector laughed under his breath. “Is this the system rewarding me, or punishing me for being a deviant?”

Either way, he moved forward. His steps felt lighter. Where before it felt like something had been suppressing him, now his full stats finally breathed. Lava bursts became easy to dodge. The sulfur no longer burned his lungs. He had gotten so used to the environment that he had not realized how much it had weighed him down.

At last, he reached the summit. The mountaintop was wide and flat, ringed with pools of molten lava that pulsed and churned below. He approached the edge and peered down into the volcano’s heart. Even with Life Mantle active, the heat was staggering.

Circling the rim, he eventually found a crude stone altar. Symbols were etched into its surface, worn, and ancient. He brushed away ash and dust, studying the markings. They reminded him of old cave paintings. One symbol stood out: a winged serpent, horned and breathing fire. Its eyes were set with dull red stones.

Curiously, Hector wiped the stones clean. They began to glow and he panicked. Suddenly, the mountain shook. Rocks slid down the slopes as tremors intensified. Lava erupted violently from the crater center, raining molten fire across the summit. Hector dodged and weaved, healing through the damage he could not avoid.

Then the eruption stopped. Slowly, something rose from the molten depths in the center of the volcano. A massive serpent emerged, coiling atop the lava. Its body glowed black and red; obsidian scales cracked with flowing magma. Wings unfolded along its sides, dripping molten fire. It had to be at least fifty feet long.

It lifted its head and bellowed an ear shattering hiss. The sound was painful, causing him to grab his ears..

  • Extreme heat emission

  •
  • Resistant to physical and fire-based damage

  •
  • Thrives in volcanic environments

  •

  Warning:

Prolonged exposure causes escalating environmental damage.

Sustained defensive measures are strongly advised.

Fear and excitement collided inside him.

The air exploded as the serpent lunged forward toward him. Hector crossed his arms just in time as a crushing force sent him tumbling across the rim. He slammed a fist into the stone, skidding to a halt.

The serpent loomed above him, red eyes burning. Steam rolled from its body as it coiled, lava dripping from its fangs.

  He rose slowly, eyes hard.

“This is not where I die.”

With a roar, he launched himself forward.

  The final battle had begun.
