Chapter 25 - Mothers *non-violent* Teachings

My relaxation after the intense training did not last long. The moment I let myself unwind, my mind immediately spiraled back into fantasies about my new class option. I still did not fully understand the whole class system and everything tied to it. After being bonded to my system for a year, seeing real progress since training under Sir Darvish, I finally decided it was time to ask my parents to help me understand the foundation of this world’s power structure again.

Stupid system and its half answers had scrambled everything I thought I knew.

I walked back to the estate, watching the sunset spill across the snowy mountains that framed our territory. My mind was already forming questions. Too many, honestly.

After washing off the dust and sweat from the day, I found my mother in her study, buried in the usual administrative duties of our land.

I told her everything. The confusion. The frustration. The pile of questions building in my head.

She listened without interrupting, then her expression shifted.

  “Start with your core.”

Her voice changed from warm and gentle to the calm, precise cadence of a noblewoman trained to command attention. I straightened instinctively. Whenever she spoke like this, even Father listened.

“Your core,” she continued, “is the foundation of your entire existence as a cultivator. It is the wellspring from which all strength is drawn. The tiers, the system interface, the class you awakened… all of those are mirrors reflecting what your core truly is.”

She lifted her hand. Frostlight gathered above her palm, swirling in a disciplined pattern. It did not crackle or roar. It simply existed, perfectly controlled.

“When you were born, your core did not exist. Everyone begins that way. The system identified your attribute early, but it could not act until you were strong enough to hold a core at all. The Guardian’s training on the mountain refined your internal structure until you could handle forming one. The system simply facilitated the integration. Your core is now fully integrated.”

“Wait. Fully integrated?” I asked. “So that’s done?”

“Yes,” she replied with a small, proud smile. “And that is why your first class slot opened.”

She folded her hands neatly in her lap.

“Class slots do not open because a class is rare or powerful. They open when the body and core are capable of supporting the strain. Before full integration, even the gentlest Legendary class skill would have torn your mana pathways like a sword through wet parchment.”

She tapped a finger against my sternum.

“Integration means structure. It means your core has stopped being a passive pool of mana and has become a living organ. It circulates, processes, and stabilizes power. That is why your Tempest Knight class can anchor its first active slot.”

“Okay… then what about the other slots? Legendary classes have three at Stage One, right? When do those open?”

  Her smile widened slightly.

“Good. Now you are beginning to understand.”

She summoned a small diagram above her hand, concentric rings of frostlight rotating around a central glow.

“Your core has three major states. Integration, purity, and ascension.”

  She pointed at the center.

“Integration is complete. That opened your first slot.”

  A ring appeared around it.

“Purity is next. Purity describes how cleanly and powerfully your core processes mana. Every breath you refine strengthens it. The Guardian’s technique of internal tracing and cleansing is exactly how purity increases.”

The diagram rotated slowly, tiny currents visible within it.

“At fifty percent purity your second class slot opens.”

“Because the core can finally handle the strain?” I guessed.

“Exactly. You could force it early, but people who try usually end up crippled. A Legendary class is not a gentle thing, Lance.”

  “And the third slot?”

“Ninety nine percent purity,” she said. “Just before ascension. That is where most cultivators pause to stabilize.”

  The outer ring brightened.

“When your core reaches one hundred percent purity, you ascend. Your core evolves to Level Two, your Tier becomes Tier Two, and you gain a new class slot. Every ascension grants another.”

“So after hitting one hundred percent purity, I become Tier Two and get a fourth slot?”

“Correct. Tier is simply the number of times the core has ascended. The core is the reality. Tier is just how people measure it.”

She let the frost diagram fade.

“This is where many misunderstand. They think Tier equals strength, but your core is what matters most.”

I frowned. “But people with strong classes… could someone with a rare class fight above their core level?”

“Yes,” she said with certainty. “Some class skills magnify power far beyond natural limits. I have seen Tier Four cultivators with only Level Three cores fight evenly with opponents above them because their class compensated.”

  “So Tier is not everything.”

“No. A person’s class, bond, blessings, techniques, and experience all change the outcome. But if someone’s class power exceeds what their core can support, there is a price.”

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

  “What kind of price?”

“Instability. Mana backlash. Bodily strain. They can burn bright for a moment, but only a moment.”

I swallowed, imagining my organs tearing.

“So the core is what holds everything together.”

“Yes. The anchor. Without purity and structure, even the strongest class collapses.”

  Her tone softened again.

“And that is why your first slot only opened once integration finished. Not before. Your class carries immense potential, and misusing it would have destroyed you.”

I breathed in slowly, grounding myself.

“So if I fight someone my level, someone else with a Stage One integrated core, what decides the winner?”

  She smiled knowingly.

“If you assume equal cores and equal purity? Then it becomes a contest of discipline, technique, and class synergy.”

  She counted on her fingers.

“A Martial class has an advantage in direct combat but little versatility. A Spellcaster has range but weak defense. A Defensive class can outlast you but not outmaneuver you.”

  She lowered her hand.

“For a Tempest Knight, momentum is everything. You excel in transitions, in turning movement into force, in channeling elemental resonance through martial technique.”

“Like how Sir Darvish made me merge footwork with lightning?”

“Yes. That is the heart of your class. A step becomes acceleration. A cut becomes a conductor. A strike becomes a catalyst for thunder.”

I felt my heartbeat rise with excitement.

“So I am strong for my level?”

“You are. But not invincible. A Legendary class raises your ceiling. It does not guarantee victory. Someone with a Rare class but higher purity or better training could beat you.”

  She touched my cheek.

“But your potential is vast. And potential is the one thing even mountains fear.”

  I exhaled softly.

“Alright. I think I understand. Mostly.”

  She laughed gently.

“Understanding is the beginning. Mastery comes after.”

I asked, “So how do I refine my core more efficiently? Is Mana Breathing the only way?”

  She shook her head.

“No dear. It is safe, but painfully slow.” She walked to the window. “That is why we have adventurers and dungeons. Monsters carry cores of their own.”

She opened a drawer and picked up a small red orb.

“This is a Tier One monster core. When held, your system will allow you to absorb the stored energy. It will increase your purity.”

Amazing. Just like the cultivation novels I read in my old world. So I could simply hunt monsters instead of meditating on the floor for twelve hours a day.

“So I just kill monsters to grow my core?”

  She chuckled.

“Yes. That is the simple version. But always learn to adapt to the growth. Strength gained too quickly becomes strength you cannot control.”

That made sense. I would need time to grow into my own body.

I also asked about cleaning up my system interface. I wanted something simpler, now that I knew what to focus on.

After experimenting a bit, I settled on this.

  ─── SYSTEM STATUS ───

For now, this will allow me to focus on growing my Core, and seeing my Skills improvements. Speaking off… Lets check out these class options while I have my mother right here.

I click the drop down menu for my available class options.

  Class Type: Active Movement Technique

  Energy Profile: Low Lightning Expenditure

  Application:

Stormlash Step is the foundational movement art of Tempest-aligned fighters. By directing a narrow current of lightning through the lower limbs, the user achieves drastically heightened acceleration. Movements leave faint after-images, allowing rapid angle shifts and evasive patterns. A charged step often culminates in an electrified melee strike, producing a whip-like arc of dispersed voltage.

Favored Weapons: Light swords, sabers, spears.

Combat Notes: Highly effective for gap-closing, counterattacks, and dueling footwork.

  Class Type: Active Blade Infusion

Energy Profile: Moderate Storm Mana Compression

  Application:

Tempest Edge coats a weapon in condensed storm essence, generating a hybrid effect of cutting wind and arcing lightning. Each swing discharges a visible wind-shear, allowing the user to engage at mid-range without sacrificing mobility. The technique is frequently used for crowd control and battlefield lane-clearing.

Favored Weapons: Longswords, greatswords, twin blades.

Combat Notes: Provides reach, pressure, and multi-target suppression.

  Class Type: Defensive Enhancement

Energy Profile: Low Initial Cost with Minor Maintenance Drain

  Application:

A defensive sheath of controlled lightning is drawn across the user’s forearms, gauntlets, and weapon. This field diffuses kinetic force, reducing impact trauma while simultaneously electrifying any item or limb that makes contact. Opponents often experience numbness or momentary muscle disruption.

Favored Weapons: Longswords, shields, duelist arms.

Combat Notes: Excels in attrition duels and defensive stances. Punishes aggressive attackers.

Class Type: Area Control / Elemental Disruption

Energy Profile: Moderate-to-High Cold-Wind Hybrid Discharge

  Application:

Drawing upon both wind-mana and minor cryo-aspect, Frostwind Pulse releases an expanding shockwave that slows bodily motion and destabilizes stance. The residual frost essence briefly adheres to the user’s weapon, enhancing subsequent strikes with chilling impact.

  Favored Weapons: Spears, halberds, greatswords.

Combat Notes: Used to reset tempo, scatter encirclement, or prepare for heavy finishing techniques.

Class Type: Grapple Augmentation / Utility

  Energy Profile: Low Conductive Output

  Application:

Channeling condensed lightning into a gauntlet or free hand, Thundergrasp Bind disrupts the opponent’s nervous signals upon physical contact. This imbalance creates openings for joint manipulation, disarms, throws, or stance breaks. Particularly valued among hybrid martial practitioners.

Favored Weapons: Sword + free hand, short blades, mixed martial styles.

Combat Notes: Ideal for seizing initiative at close range and countering armored opponents.

  Class Type: High-Impact Core Technique

  Energy Profile: High Lightning Expenditure

  Application:

The user channels mana directly through the core pathways before releasing it in a decisive weapon strike. At the moment of impact, the generated lightning bolt travels along the blade’s trajectory, massively amplifying destructive output. Traditionally used as a finishing blow or to shatter fortified defenses.

Favored Weapons: Greatswords, warhammers, polearms; viable with light blades for execution cuts.

Combat Notes: A signature Stage-1 killing technique. High cost prohibits overuse.

  —

Oh no. It was not just giving me a skill. It was giving me choices.

  And they were all incredible.

I read through each one carefully. I only had three picks for this Stage. Two more later, but I did not know if the same options would return at Tier Up. I needed to choose wisely.

Given my age, my current training, and the fact that my Legendary class was surely known to the upper circles by now, the safest first choice was defense.

Arclight Guard felt perfect. Defensive and compatible with my gauntlets and daggers, but with enough offensive potential to electrify my limbs and strikes. It fit everything I needed right now.

  I selected it.

A soft tone rang in my mind.

  SYSTEM NOTICE

  Class Skill Selected: ARCLIGHT GUARD

  Active Slot One: Locked In

  Integration completed

And just like that, my path as a Tempest Knight took its first real step.
