Chapter 68

  The first thing I did when I woke up was take a deep breath to ensure the smell was gone. Happily, it was. The next thing was to check my notifications.

  Congratulations, you have under gone a Race Change. Your new race is Nephilim. As part of the Race Change, all vileness was purged from your body. Your body is now pure and pristine. Changing Race is always a painful process, both physically and mentally.

  Nephilim is a half-ascended state. You are neither mortal nor immortal. You will not age, and will forever remain in peak health. However, unlike true immortals, you can be killed. Nephilim’s physical and mental stats are much higher than normal humans, so you can expect to become stronger and smarter as you progress.

  Path of Ascension: As a Nephilim, you are on the Path of Ascension. True immortality awaits, through a centuries long struggle of improvement. Good luck.

  The next notification was just as surprising.

  The title Mr. Perfect has been activated due to your Race Change. Your stats will be adjusted to the maximum allowed for Nephilim. There may be some discomfort. Okay, maybe a lot.

  Discomfort my but. If that is what I call ‘discomfort’, I truly don’t want to find out what they consider painful.

  Linguistics: Nephilim are known for their ability to communicate with all living beings. Not only can they talk to all sapient beings, they are able to communicate with animals and most monsters. Linguistics has increased from Epic to Legendary.

  Not sure how helpful this is going to be. As it is, I can talk to all sapient beings. Do I really need to talk to animals?

  Next was a slew of notifications covering my stats change. Apparently, they happened one at a time, which explains why I was in pain for so long. All in all, the gains were quite impressive.

  Strength: 15 -> 30

  Agility: 15 -> 30

  Dexterity: 15 -> 25

  Endurance: 15 -> 40

  Constitution: 15 -> 40

  Intelligence: 15 -> 25

  This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

  Wisdom: 15 -> 25

  Perception: 15 -> 30

  Luck: 15 -> 25

  Charisma: 15 -> 20

  Charisma changed the least, and it didn’t have the ‘to Humans’ modifier. I don’t know how significant that was though. Everything else increase quite drastically. I would have to take care and adjust to my new stats, particularly the physical stats. Strength itself had doubled and that could cause problems.

  I got out of bed and looked at myself in the mirror. There did not appear to be any physical changes that I could see. Same height, same weight. My hair wasn’t any longer, my eyes were the same color. Even through my appearance hadn’t changed, I could feel a difference.

  I got dressed, almost ripping my exercise clothes as I put them on. Then headed to the garden. Dreading the smell, I would find there but needing the space. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to find all the black sludge gone along with its odor. Gabriel must have used his Cleanse spell to remove the offending sludge.

  I started with my martial arts kata. The kata was a combination of force and gentle touch, which would help control my new strength and agility. It went horribly bad. My new stats messed up my muscle memory. My strength and agility coordination was shot. It took me five more katas before I got a handle on it. It was far from perfect, but still I needed to move on to my weapons forms. First sword, just as bad as my kata. Then spear and finally knife forms. Neither would win me any prizes, but at the end I saw improvement. The weapon forms helped with the changes in strength and dexterity. Nothing went smoothly and I felt I would have to been aware of my physical activities throughout the day.

  With my concerns about the stat changes still foremost in my mind, I headed back inside. It was just about breakfast time anyway. I went to the dining room. I was quite hungry. Probably because of the race change. I also had a full load of patients ahead of me, so breaks would be few and far between. Even though I was very careful with the dishes, I still broke a cup and bent a fork. Not the normal way you would bend the fork but crushing the handle with my grip. I did manage to feed myself though, without creating too much of a mess.

  I won’t say the day flew by, but I did have lots of patients and was busy throughout. Most of the patients were from the Monster Wave defenders. While they had been healed during the wave, many was unsure if internal damage was done. I did a Diagnose on each patient. If I found something, I cast Heaven’s Heal. Even if it wasn’t related to an injury cause by the fight. If not, I told them they were okay and they went on their way.

  I was only charging ten silvers per follow up patient, unless they needed a limb regrown. I did reduce my price to one gold, though. Even then, if a commoner did not have a gold, I healed them anyway and then swore them to silence. This was only for those who had helped in the defense during the Monster Wave. Nobles or commoners, it didn’t matter today. The price was the same. There were no adventurers, since I had visited the Guild yesterday. Tomorrow, everything would go back to normal, including prices.

  That evening, I studied the books Arigulius gave me, and I played with the black cube.

  The next three days followed the same pattern. I woke up, did my exercises, saw patients, and then studied in the evenings. It was very peaceful. Well, everything but the dreams.
