I have to admit. When I first got to Tellus Novus, I was in a bad place emotionally. I couldn’t deny that I had died and was no longer on Earth. Hell, I was still grieving over my death and loss of my family. I remember that I was so angry when I first woke up in that cave. Angry at the world, at Arigulius, at myself for no reason. It took me a few days, and lots of exercise, to work through the anger but I did. Of course, it was replaced a deep abiding loneliness. I worked through it though. It took work and recognition that I couldn’t go back, no matter what I tried to promise to God. I finally had to leave the cave.
I made my way through the Dark Forest to Forest Glen. It was an exciting trip to say the least. I slept in trees, fought my first monster there, and ran from my first pack of wolves. I crossed a giant snake infested river, chased off some robber who were attacking a family of Sasquatch. All before finally coming to Forest Glen.
Of course, when I got to Forest Glen, things didn’t go as planned exactly. I had to heal the leader of the city, Earl Donnert. For this, he gave me a house, Covern House. Then I got into a duel, almost killed him, saved him from an assassination attempt, foiled another assassination attempt on me this time, and wound up with another house that I haven’t seen yet. Oh yeah, rather than settle down and just run my magical healing business, I had to join the Adventurers Guild to stop the local Assassins Guild from trying to kill me.
The most important lesson I have learned since I got here, was that magical healing is not a thing in Tellus Nova. I am actually the first real practitioner anyone has ever met. Potions and bandages were the mainstay of healing. They are very limited of course, but that was what they had until I came along. I can replace limbs, cure diseases, and remove curses. Of course, this all requires high level healing spells I learned on Heaven’s Path and which nobody else on Tellus Nova has. I have created lower-level healing spells which I plan on training others. After I figure out how.
The last two months have been unexpected quiet. For the most part. I did have an unsatisfactory encounter with one Baron Nosesitch. I should have known it was going to go sideways as soon as I got to his manor. Every other time, the nobles sent a carriage to pick me up. This time, I hired a carriage to take us. That was the first indication of a bad time.
The head butler greeted us when we arrived. He led us into a small waiting room. There we waited for more than an hour. Really, do they know I charge by the hour? They didn’t even offer us tea. The head butler finally did bring us to Baron Nosesitch.
The baron was in his office behind his desk. Now on Earth, this would be a power play, letting me know that he was in charge. Hell, I even pulled the same ploy on junior members when they joined my team.
“Hello Baron Nosesitch. I am Trevor of House Tierra, the healer you requested. This is my assistant Fabia of House Tierra.”
“Yes, yes, I know who you are. Bolstervi already informed me.” He said somewhat impatiently.
“How may I be of service today, my lord?” I asked.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
The baron looked at me like I was a fool, then said “I want my legs fixed. I thought that would be obvious.”
I was taken aback by his words and attitude, but continued on in a friendly manner. “May I see your legs? I need to do an examination before I can begin.”
The baron was sitting in a wheelchair, but it was designed that you couldn’t tell while he was behind his desk. He rolled out from behind his desk and stopped in front of Fabia and myself. His legs were covered by pants, so I couldn’t see them.
“May I cast Diagnose on you, my lord?” I asked.
“Yes, please be quick. I have other matters to attend to,” he replied.
I cast Diagnose. He was paralyzed from the waist down. I studied it for a few minutes, then asked “How did this happen?”
“I would rather not say,” was his reply.
I envisioned a duel gone bad, then crossed that off. Maybe an assignation being discovered by a jealous husband? More likely something mundane like he tripped and fell awkwardly causing the fracture of his vertebrae and cutting through his spinal cord. Either way, I figured I could fix it easily enough.
I asked him, if I could examine his feet. He agreed, and I took off his shoes and socks. I pressed my fingernail into his big toe. “Do you feel anything?”
“Of course not. I told you I can’t feel anything.”
“How long ago did this happen?”
“Twenty years ago. No one has been able to help. Many a charlatan has tried to con me out of my gold without result. As much good as I have heard about you, I expect the same result.”
I cast Heaven’s Heal. I didn’t even warn him. The spinal cord and vertebrae were repaired.
The sensation hit him immediately. His legs tingled, then itched. Much like when your arm falls asleep then wakes up, only ten times worse. He gasped when the sensation hit him. He groaned and shifted restlessly until the sensations died down.
I admit, I took some enjoyment in his discomfort. He was an ass to Fabia and me. I wouldn’t call it payback, but…
“Please don’t try and stand up right away. It’s been 20 years since your legs had proper exercise. You will need to take your time regaining strength in your legs. I can create an exercise routine for you that will have you up and walking in a week or two. If you continue with the exercises, you will be back to normal within a month.” I told him, thinking he would be happy knowing he was going to walk again. I was wrong.
“What? What do you mean I have to wait to walk. I paid you to fix my legs. I want them fixed.”
“Your legs are fixed. You can even move your toes now. Try it.”
The baron looked at his foot and began to wriggle his toes. “That proves nothing. Legs are useless unless I can walk.” He stared at me defiantly.
What an ass.
“You can walk, IF you follow the exercise routine I give you. For now, tell me can you feel this” I asked as I grabbed his foot and squeezed. His gasp was all the answer I needed.
“Now to go even further, I will help you stand for a few seconds. It’s part of your exercise routine. Please call for your butler or valet.”
Bolstervi came in at the baron’s call.
“Bolstervi, you will need to watch carefully. I will show you the exercises the baron needs to do for the next 2 weeks.”
I helped the baron stand. His balance was bad, but I expected that and told him it would get better. He was able to last longer than I thought but had to sit after 10 seconds. After that he was a believer. I ran through a series of leg strengthening exercises for him and Bolstervi. We got paid, double what I would have normally charged. Call it an asshole fee. Then we left. I still had to pay for a carriage to take us back to Covern House.
I would send Fabia to check in on him next week to ensure progress was being made. Even though he was an ass, I didn’t want to give him an excuse to badmouth me to anyone.
Other than Baron Nosesitch, things have been going smoothly. My adjustment to this world seems to be done and now I just need to wait out my time to repair my soul. It’s going to be a quiet two years; I just know it.
