Chapter 45

“Is everyone ready to begin?” I asked as I strode into the room. With nods from everyone, I went to the head of the table and picked up the diagram for Close Wounds.

“Everyone is here to learn three spells. Close Wounds, Minor Life Regenerate, and Minor Heal. These spells build on each other, so with them, you will be able to save your teammates lives. You will also be able to assist with healing our adventurer brethren.” I let that sink in for a moment, then continued. “I have provided descriptions of each spell, along with a diagram. You will need to learn each before reading the tome that grants the spell. Reading the tome without understanding the spell will result in failure and remove one instance of the spell from the tome. If that happens too much, then you won’t have a tome to learn the spell. Which means you will be unable to progress to learn Minor Healing.”

“Finally, you cannot teach anyone else this spell. Unless you can create it in your own tome. When we are done here, you will be able to take the description with you, but the diagrams and tomes will remain here. If you want to sponsor someone else, then send me a message and when I have enough candidates, I will hold another class. You can use the spell as you like, and even discuss its description with others. I only ask that you don’t reveal the diagram and don’t try to teach anyone else.”

I held up the diagram for Close Wounds for everyone to see. “This is the first spell you are going to learn, Close Wounds. It is a basic spell that will close physical wounds to stop bleeding. It repairs skin and muscle. Nothing else. Say a person gets their arm cut and it cuts through the muscle, Close Wounds will heal it. It won’t replace life points or general health, so you need to be careful how many times you use it on one person. If you need to use it multiple times, then use Minor Life Regenerate to ensure the patient has enough life points. Please review the description and diagram for Close Wounds, until you can recreate them. If you have questions, let me know and I will help you on an individual basis.”

“Okay, now that all the introduction stuff is out of the way, it is time to start learning the spells. So, get to it.” I said and smiled.

Everyone was quite excited and began to read the description. There was light chatting with each other as they read through it. Audriel started to copy the description on another piece of paper. Some read quietly aloud (Silent), while others read to themselves. Each had their own way of comprehending. I left them to it, waiting until someone had a question.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Malika was the first one with a question. “Does Close Wounds cure any ailments, like wound infections?”

“No, unfortunately it does not. Even Heaven’s Heal does not cure ailments like infections. You would need a different spell, like the Cure All spell that will cure infections, poisons, curses, and diseases. I don’t have a low-level spell for Cure All.”

There were few questions as most of the mages had a better understanding of the principles of magic than I did. The few questions that were asked were more about how the magic flowed through the diagram, which I was able to answer.

After everyone finished their first review of the description and diagram, I instructed to draw the diagram onto a sheet of paper. When they were done copying, I told them to draw it from memory. That caused quite a stir.

“This is the method I used to train both Aldra and Fralley successfully. It may take you a few times, but I am sure everyone in this room can do it.” After that little motivation, the group set about drawing the diagram from memory.

Silent was the first done with the diagram. He brought it to me for my review. I checked it against my memory and found it faultless.

“Good job. Do you want to wait until the others are done or do you want to move ahead with the tome?” I asked.

  “The tome please.”

I handed Silent the tome. “You should just have to read it to learn the spell. Maybe think Close Wound rather than say it, since you are a silent caster. Come to me when you think you have learned it.” I whispered to him. Then I gave him the tome.

Silent went to the end of the table rather than his seat. He sat down, took a deep breath and opened the tome. He sat looking at the tome. After a minute, I saw the tome glow for a few seconds and a smile cross Silent’s face. He gathered the tome and returned to me.

I took out a knife and made a shallow cut along my forearm. More a scratch than a cut, just deep enough to bleed.

  “Cast away”, I said.

Silent grabbed my arm and a second later the wound closed. Silent let out a whoop of joy. Raising and pumping his fist in victory.

“Congratulations on learning a new spell. For being first, you get to be the one providing wounds for everyone else to heal.” I said with humor in my voice.

“It doesn’t matter” he said, “if that is the cost of being able to heal, I pay it gladly.” The smile never left his face.

Over the next four hours, the mages learned all three spells. Silent was finished first every time. I think this was because he was a silent caster. The Adventurers Guild now had six new healers, capable of life saving healing. During the monster wave, they would be responsible for healing. While they couldn’t heal everything, they could keep you alive until I got there.

We had a celebratory lunch, which included the staff. The mood was quite jubilant for the mages and infected the staff with the same joy. It was a great lunch.

I sent the mages off to the Adventurers Guild and suggest they work with Aldra and Fralley to get practical experience.
