Working On The Third Floor

The last thing that I need is to add a boss but I think I'll hold off on that for a bit. At least until I get a few spawners down. This is the third floor after all and the closest any team has gotten is just over halfway across the second floor. Of course this being the third floor also means the lowest level spawner I can make is level 3. Which means that just three spawners will be almost 100 DP. Right now I'm trying to decide which one I want to be the nuisance, pestering delvers throughout the entire floor. I'm leaning towards spiders since any delver who makes it this far will be good at fighting level 3 spiders already. Then again that's also the problem. I mean do I really want to give them a fight they are already prepared for? I have to take the kid gloves off eventually.

If anyone makes it to the third floor without understand exactly what I am that's their fault. After thinking it over a bit more I decide to go with bats. Over the next week or so I place six level 3 bat spawners throughout the third floor. They are bigger than I though they would be. I don't know if it's just that species or if it's do to magical shenanigans. I know that some species of bats did get fairly large, but I'm not sure any of them got quite that big. I think about placing a few more but decide against it. While I do want them to be a constant nuisance, they are only level 3 and so adding more would just make them even more of a nuisance than they need to be on this floor. For the first of the three main mobs of this floor I decide that I will be adding spiders after all. However instead of level 3 I decide to make them all level 4. Tougher than the spiders they're use to but nothing they can't handle. Although the spiders venom is slightly more potent than it was at level 3. Over the next two weeks I set about creating six spider spawners and upgrading them to level 4. I then set them to patrol the first third of the third floor. I do briefly consider dropping it to the first quarter of the third floor but decide against it.

As for the next mob, part of me wants to choose slime just to see if they'd be anything like the cute little slimes I'm thinking of. I can't bring myself to do it though. I already decided the third floor would be where I weed out casual civilians from actual delvers. At the very least I want to weed out stupid. So with that in mind I decide to make the next mob scorpions. This time around it still only takes about two weeks to place six scorpion spawners and upgrade them to level 5. I briefly wonder why but soon realize it's because another team made it to the second floor. They ended up loosing one of their members to a bear before realizing they were still inside the dungeon. I'm not sure if it was the mental fatigue or what, but they didn't seem to register how far down they climbed to get to the second floor. It never even occurred to them to ask why they had to travel down several flights of stairs to reach the surface after exploring a cave that was also gradually descending the entire time. This is exactly the kind of stupid I want my third floor to weed out entirely.

As for the scorpions they are about 35 centimeters in length. This makes them easily far larger than any scorpion on earth, at least before everything went crazy. If I remember correctly the largest scorpion on earth used to be maybe 25 cm and it was considered a giant among scorpions. The scorpions will patrol the middle third of the floor. There will be some small overlap with the spiders as well just to keep things interesting and help people learn to spot the new mob. After all, while they may be big for a scorpion as far as mobs go they're on the smaller side.

The next mob will certainly be a lot easier to spot. The next mob after all, I already had planned out since I saw the options. while I still think they belong more in a forest environment on the surface I also can't help but think what's a dungeon without goblins. Aside from being my first humanoid mob they are also the first mob to spawn with equipment. Each goblin has a wooden club and thankfully a loin cloth. They vary in height from 58 to 62 centimeters the largest variation in size of any mob so far. Also thanks to Eric's group getting closer to the second floor boss It only takes about three weeks to place six goblin spawners and upgrade them all to level 6. This also makes it the first regular mob to be stronger than one of my bosses. The system might not consider that an important milestone but I do.

Now I just need to pick a boss for the third floor. The choices are all good but I already know which one I want. still I take a moment to consider each one just in case I change my mind.

  Third Floor Boss

  Giant Bat

  Cave Bear

  Rock Golem

  Goblin Chieftain

  Orc Butcher

While I am curious about what exactly an orc butcher is and how it differs from an ordinary orc I don't have any ordinary orcs to compare it to. Besides I think Goblin Chieftain will be great for the boss of this floor. Plus at this point I've kind of already established a pattern and while it isn't set in stone I do want to try and keep to it if I can. The chieftain itself is about 90 cm, so almost a full 30 cm taller than the other goblins. Being level 8 also granted my chieftain access to the ability to set traps. I watched him work for a bit and while the traps themselves are rather mundane and far from lethal they could significantly slow a person down and make them vulnerable to a surprise attack.
