Ch 12. First time Spelunking

Helo stumbles to his knees and feels rocks beneath his feet. Micah had given him good advice and he wanted to do well. He also gave him a bag with some food and water. Looking up his eyes quickly adjust to the dark tunnel he is in. “So, I am in some sort of fantasy dungeon.” Thinking to himself Helo decides the first thing he wants to do is get a feel for what is going on. “Partial Status.”

The screen filling his vision was smaller and filled his vision much less. Thanks Micah, this will help a lot. “Now, ‘Identify’.”

  Tier: 0

The base tier for most sentient races.

At tier 0 you will gain 1 free stat per level.

“Huh. Well, that is good to know. What about a bloodline. ‘Identify’.”

  Vampire

A tier 2 race known for their bloodlust and nocturnal habits. They gain strength from the blood they consume.

The vampiric bloodline gives one stat point to Vitality and Agility per level.

“Woah, that is helpful.” While looking at the reduced page Helo hears a noise echo from down the tunnel.

“Plop Plop Plop.” Getting up from the ground he slowly walks down the tunnel. Moving without a sound he rounds a corner and stops in surprise. Hopping down the center of the tunnel is a blue blob. “Plop Plop.” With each hop the blob jumps a foot in the air, lands on the ground and rolls, before starting another hop. Peering closely Helo can see a dark spot in the center of the blob.

  “Identify”

  Common Blue Slime

  Tier: 0 Basic Dungeon Monster.

Slimes are a simple race that likes to nibble on new things. They are mostly harmless and can barely hurt a child. They have many useful abilities.

But, within a dungeon they are an unfeeling and hungry monster. Don’t let their appearance fool you.

As Helo stands along the path the slime hops closer. The slime stalls as soon as it notices Helo then starts to slowly roll toward him. The slime is about half a foot in diameter and moving slowly.

Helo can’t help but be unsure of what to do. Personally, he finds the slime quite cute. But also, the system box told him that dungeon slimes are dangerous. Helo doesn’t fully believe that the slime is dangerous so he watches as it rolls closer.

The slime is only three feet away when it stops and faces him. “Hi there little guy. You don’t have a face but you’re looking at me, right?” Once he stops talking, he can feel a flash of danger within his aura sense before the slime leaps at him far faster than its pervious hops.

Flinching back while putting his hands in the air, Helo shouts in surprise before groaning in pain. Falling on his butt, he looks down to see the slime eating through his pant leg and slowly dissolving his skin.

Growling at the tiny slime Helo’s bloodline slowly wakes up and his fangs start to slide into place. Ignoring the pain in his left-hand Helo reaching into the slimes body. He is surprised by how easy it is but is also confused because nothing has happened to it. Reaching up to his wrist he clenches his teeth and feels something hard in the center of the slime.

Pulling out his hand Helo holds the slimes core in front of his face. On his leg he still feels pain, but it stopped spreading and is now contained on his thigh.

  “Bing”

Looking up in surprise, he uses his new skill. “Identify”

  Slime Core

  Tier 0 Lvl 1

Slimes are one of the few magical beasts that produce a core in tier 0. Their cores hold small amounts of stored energy.

“Ahhhhh, this hurts.” Looking down he can see his skin dissolved and his upper thigh bleeding. Rolling on the floor he takes off his pants and rips off the leg. Wrapping the leg around his thigh, he clenches his teeth and uses the nearby cave wall to stand. “Gahh, this is now going to be fun.”

Looking at the core that he dropped on the ground Helo puts it into his pocket and starts limping down the cave. After walking in the dark cave for another few minutes Helo starts hearing a familiar noise.

“Plop, plop, plop.” Hearing the slime coming down the cave Helo looks around him and sees an uneven and jagged tunnel. Ten feet in front of him and to the left is a protrusion on the wall of the tunnel. Hobbling over he uses it to hide behind and waits for the slime to hop by.

Once the slime gets within five feet of him in the center of the tunnel it stops and looks over at him. Surprised by the slime stopping, Helo almost gets struck again as the slime dives at his other leg. Thankfully he felt another hint of danger within his aura and fell to the right. As the slime flies over his left leg, he watches it hit the wall and roll back.

Carefully getting up, Helo puts weight on his right leg and watches as the slime appears to shake its body. “Is it dazed?” After watching for a moment Helo can’t help but realize how dumb he is. Taking out his dagger Helo lunges forward and strikes at the slime. His blade passes through it tearing away a chunk of its body.

Watching carefully, Helo sees the slime reform after losing a piece. It is a little smaller now. The size is like a basketball to a volleyball. Watching the slightly smaller slime, it rolls back and leaps forward again.

Raising the dagger in his right hand he watches the slime in the air and sees the slightly darker portion within its body. Angling his kukri, he pushes it forward catching the darker portion. It cracks and splits in two on the tip of the blade. The slimes body splashes against his own and starts to ooze down. Thankfully it is no longer corrosive.

  “Bing”

“Huh what was that.” He speaks out looking around his body. Not seeing anything he stops to ponder. But as he stops moving a light flashes in his vision. Looking toward the light, his status page opens. This time it is only a few lines.

  10 experience gained.

  10 experience gained.

  Class: N/A Level: 0 (20/1000)

“Okay so I grow stronger from combat. Now why did that slime notice me. I was hidden.” Thinking a bit longer Helo realizes that the slime didn’t even have eyes. “It must have sense me in some other way.”

Picking up the core Helo can feel the pain from his previous injury. It didn’t affect him much in the fight but it was painful.

Continuing on his way down the tunnel Helo starts meditating and focusing on the beat of his heart. He feels the swirling mass of dark and light energy. Pulling on that darkness he uses his aura to silence his footsteps. Not long after Helo hears another slime. This time he can hear a second one that isn’t far behind the first.

Well, I guess I should test what works. Pulling more energy Helo erases his entire presence. This was the first techniques he learned. The issue with this is that it draws much higher amounts of mental and bloodline energy from his body. Silencing his steps or smell draws very little.

But with his techniques he is erasing his entire presence. This also includes hiding him from magical perception. Using a mix of his aura and the energy that flows through his body he hides from the slime and waits for it to pass.

Breathing slowly and calmly he watches as the slime jump closer to him. Once it is within the same range that the previous slime found him it stops. Feeling worried Helo doesn’t move and watches as the slime looks around.

The slime hits the ground and rolls. Coming to a stop it can feel something in the area that isn’t right. Before it can find what is wrong and blade pierces through its body and splits its core.

Sighing in relief Helo goes back into the dark corner and hides his presence again. When the second slime comes into view it stops on the body of its fallen brethren and absorbs its mass. Watching it Helo using identify on the creature only to be surprised by what he saw.

  Slime Core

  Tier 0 Lvl 2

Slimes are one of the few magical beasts that produce a core in tier 0. Their cores hold small amounts of stored energy.

The slime gained a level by absorbing the mass and core of another creature. Taking out his knife Helo killed this slime in the same way as the last. Not much changed, it was larger and slightly harder to penetrate. This time he also gained 12 experience points.

Continuing through the cavern Helo kills another 15 slimes by hiding his presence and attacking from around a rock or corner. He gains another 150 experience and 15 tier 0 mana cores.

  Class: N/A Level: 0 (182/1000)

After stuffing his pockets with his cores and cleaning off his blades Helo searches the dark cavern one last time before he follows the path to a staircase leading down. On either side of the stairs is a lit torch and a small stone path leading between the torches and down further into the dungeon.

On the next floor the slimes start at level two and come in pairs. For the first half of the floor Helo is continuing with how he acted on the first floor. But as time goes on, he can feel his mental energy draining faster. After silently killing two final slimes Helo back tracks and starts to rest before continuing on.

The second half of the floor there are three slimes in each group but the new slime is only level one. Helo realizes that he doesn’t have to change much in his strategy. Silently killing the first two Helo dives out of the way of the last slime and kills it quickly before moving on. This continues until he is at the next set of stairs. By the end he has another 10 cores from level 1 slimes and another 40 from level 2

  Class: N/A Level: 0 (642/1000)

Going onto the third floor Helo can’t help but stop in surprise. He expected to see three level three slimes. Instead, the entrance to the floor is layered in cobwebs. They start on the floor near the edges of the tunnel and twist their way up. In the end the cobwebs make a beautiful and terrifying scene of geometric twisting silk fused horror.

With a shudder Helo whispers, “Yeah no, not happening.” Deciding that he needs a break he goes to the staircase and back to the end of the second floor. Once there he pulls of his bag and drinks some water.

While sitting down Helo starts to focus on his heart. This is a meditation exercises that Helo does when he is bored or to calm himself down. Slowly getting drawn in Helo starts to feel to swirling currents of energy that make up his powers. A dark swirl that overpowers his golden lifeforce. But the darkness for him is calming it represents his ability to nullify. The sound he produces, the scent he leaves in the air, and if he tries hard enough even his entire presence.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

This power also lets him nullify defenses to some degree. Then there is the golden energy. This is powerful and filled with vitality. When he drains someone of their energy, he can feel that golden swirl growing stronger and energizing his body. It heals, empowers and refreshes him.

While his focus was on his heart and the energy represented there, he could see how the swirls are not as large as normal. He had used a lot of energy today and was feeling pretty tired. But after pushing a little deeper he noticed that the energy representing his bloodline was growing again. The more he focused on it the faster the energy seemed to return.

  “Bing”

Through the pondering of your bloodline and the energy it is fueled by you have gained the skill. ‘Meditation’.

Using his identify skill Helo looks at his new skill. But as he is about to finish the skill description disappears and he hears another notification.

Meditation: This skill is a focus-based and increases the regeneration of one’s mana. If…

  “Bing”

Error: This individual is incapable of using Mana due to ‘Dark Curse’. Skill ‘Meditation’ is lost. Meditation is replaced by ‘Natural Meditation’.

  “Bing”

Natural Meditation: This skill is focus-based and increases the regeneration of one’s natural resources. This includes bloodline energy, mental energy and physical energy.

“Woah.” Helo mutters under his breath. “Wait. Incapable of using Mana. What is that! Status!”

Feeling good about his growth Helo gets up and heads back into the third floor. Looking at the walls filled with web Helo can’t help but shudder again. Focusing on his hearing he can make out the light tapping of multiple legs on the cavern walls. He can also hear the feint plopping of slimes landing after a jump. All the noises are muffled from the webs making it hard to track their locations.

“Well. I will just have to take this slowly.” With a resigned sigh Helo pulls on his heart and wraps himself in a swirl of shadow; nullifying his presence.

After weaving through the webs in the tunnel Helo catches movement from his left and dives to the ground. Over his head a fist sized spider flies by and lands on his right side. Getting a look at the spider it is black and silver with fangs in its mouth dripping venom. “Identify”

  Baby Cave Spider

  Tier 0 Lvl 3

This is a baby spider known for filling caves with its webs and staying near its siblings until fully grown. It has a minor venom that disorientates its victim.

Jumping to his feet Helo barely has enough time to dodge to his right as the spider jumps again. Losing the spider in the think webs Helo focuses and flares his aura only to feel the presence of another spider just before it drops on his left shoulder. Quickly unsheathing his right blade from behind his back Helo stabs the spider a moment before it sank its fangs into his neck.

“Agh, gross. I’m supposed to be biting necks.” Unsheathing his left blade Helo flares his aura again looking for any enemies. Unfortunately for him he can feel multiple presences all around him. Rolling backward the way he came Helo slowly retreats while dodging and slashing at the jumping spiders.

They are showing surprisingly good teamwork with constant jumping from random angles trying to lead him into the webs. It would have worked well on anyone else who is alone but with Helo’s high perception, aura sense that he worked on and keen instincts he is surviving.

As a spider leaps toward his left side Helo slides right only for his shoulder to get caught in a web. Slashing at the spider leaping at him and the web Helo is surprised. Killing the spider was easy. But the web itself wasn’t cut. Drawing his aura back Helo focuses his energy on his blade and cuts the web before diving backward again. Getting stuck cost him his aura senses and for a moment he almost got surprised. It was only thanks to his hearing that he ducked intime for another spider to miss.

Getting a moment to catch his bearing Helo can’t help but be happy that he is able to coat his blade so quickly. But he is also frustrated that to do so takes all of his concentration.

Working his way back he continues dodging the spiders and killing any easy targets until there is only on left. As the final spider slides off his blade and to the ground Helo can’t help but fall to his knees and gasp for breath. This is worse than last night and the poachers. At least for them I had some blood to drink to replenish my physical energy. Tilting his head in thought Helo looks at the fallen body of the last spider and shudders. “Nope.”

Heading back to the entrance Helo sits next to the stairs and meditates watching his energy replenish. As he sits there, he looks at the notification during the fight.

  Class: N/A Level: 0 (852/1000)

After about an hour of waiting Helo heads back into the floor this time there are slimes as well. They don’t take much extra effort and Helo uses the same strategy as the previous time. This time instead of getting surrounded he walks forward until a spider notices him and then draws it back before attacking. Doing this repeatedly Helo finally after about an hour of fighting and maneuvering Helo sees the torches for the third-floor exit.

At this he can’t help but lay on the ground under the torches and stare at the ceiling. Slowly his eyes start to close and then he falls asleep.

Waking up with a jump a few hours later Helo looks around him for what work him up. Finally looking up Helo can see a spider about one foot above his head slowly lowering itself down. Grabbing his left blade, he kills the spider and looks around for his backpack. It is sitting on the ground near the torch he was sleeping under. Pulling out some water and food Helo starts to eat.

While eating he pulls up his notifications and is surprised by what he sees.

You have gained a level bringing your level up to 1. You have gained one free attribute point due to raising your level. You have gained +1 to Vit, Will, Per and Agl. Due to your race being Vampire?

Surprised Helo looks back at the definition for vampire and it shows that he would gain 2 attribute points, not four. So, whatever it is that is making his Vampire race have a question mark must be important. “Partial Status”

“Awesome.” Helo gets up feeling good. He doesn’t feel great mostly because the tunnel floor isn’t a good place to sleep and he is covered it spider guts and silk. Walking down to the fourth floor Helo gets back into the swing of things. Muting his sound so he doesn’t draw to many spiders. Using his aura to find any that are sneaking up on him and methodically killing all the spiders that leap or fall on him. His transition from using his aura to see and using it to coat his blade is getting quicker. But it still isn’t something he can do at the same time. Whenever he gets tired, he backtracks to the entrance to meditate and when he is full, he continues forward.

While meditating Helo can feel that there is more to this skill than just increased regeneration. It helps him focus inward and draws him closer to the flow of his energy. He can see how his cells are slowly producing the energy that turns golden. While coming from him mind is the dark energy that feeds his most used abilities.

There definitely is more to this. But it isn’t something I have the energy to look into while I am fighting and resting. Deciding that once he is out of the dungeon he will look further, he continues forward.

Finishing the fourth floor Helo is a fourth of the way to level two and heads down to the fifth floor. The first half of this floor is similar to the previous one. He continues the same process resting twice. When he is about halfway to the exit, he sees light up ahead. Using the full scope of his hiding ability while drawing in the shadows that surround him Helo crouches and walks to the end of the tunnel.

Reaching the exit the first thing Helo does is look to the light source. It is crystals on the ceiling of the cavern that are bathing it in warm light. The rest of the cavern is about the size of a stadium and has a shallow river in the center. He can see the torches for the exit of the fifth floor on the other side. Looking down from the tunnel that he is in, it is about 10 feet above the floor of the cavern. The cavern is filled with stalactites/mites that grown from the ceiling and floor. Many of these are connected together forming columns.

Moving between these columns are large rats that stand about knee high on Helo. There are also slimes jumping around and the ceiling is full of spiders that have their webs growing down the columns.

Taking a deep breath Helo sits down to meditate. Once he is full Helo obscures his sound and smell, then he makes his way to the cavern floor. Even though he is in a cave this setting feels more natural for him. Weaving between the stalagmites on the cave floor and staying away from the columns with their webs he makes his way to the left of his entrance.

Finding the first slime Helo quickly kills it and takes its core putting it into his backpack. Moving forward Helo is about to turn a corner but he hears the scurrying of tiny claws on the ground. Waiting for the rat to come closer he draws his left blade. Letting his bloodline fuel his body his right-hand nails elongate and sharpen. Reaching around the corner he grabs the rat by the head and is about the slam his blade onto its head but its tail whips over its shoulder slamming into his ribs. Feeling a crack Helo growls low and tightens his grip on the rat. Its movements are far stronger than he expected. Using identify Helo realizes his mistake. The rat is level five and its species are known for the strength in their tails. They also have high endurance. This is the first time Helo is fighting a mammal that has levels and this surprised him.

Realizing that he underestimated his prey. Helo can’t help but be a bit disappointed in himself. He lived for many years in the woods hunting and acting like a predator. But a rat is putting him in his place. Focusing back on the fight he has just enough time to get his arm up to block a strike from the tail of the creature. The tail overpowers his arm and his drawn blade clatters onto the ground. This draws the attention of nearby creatures.

Getting frustrated Helo grabs the rat with his other hand and focusing his dark energy into his nails he tears its throat. The rat lets out a gurgled cry but Helo is in pain from his arm and cracked ribs. Realizing the importance of his low endurance Helo bites into the rat and drains some blood.

As the blood pours down his throat, he can feel the pull of his cells as they draw out the lingering vitality. Letting out a low moan Helo can feel his energy replenish in a way that resting can’t. “Aahhhugh, that rat was way better than I should have been.” Helo moans out. All the kinks from sleeping on the floor and the lingering soreness are gone. Sitting up he can feel his cracked rib slowly mending. After sighing in relief Helo’s heightened senses due to his increase in physical abilities can clearly hear the sounds of other rats coming his way.

Crawling forward he grabs his downed dagger and tries to conceal himself. Only to realize that due to his golden vital energy he cannot actively use his dark nullifying ability. He can feel the excess vitality empowering himself and smoothly leaving his body. But he has about five more seconds before he can conceal himself and from what he can hear three rats are almost here. Resigning himself that once he is out of this dungeon he will meditate and try to understand his abilities, Helo gets ready to fight.

Looking around there are stalagmites surrounding him on all side with paths going through them all on the bumpy tunnel ground. A large rat is coming from the front, the left side and behind him. Diving to the right Helo sheaths his left dagger and uses his left hand to claw at a stalagmite on that side. While digging his hand in he whips himself back around and at the rat that was coming from the front now on the right side. Using his right dagger, he slashes at the rat’s tail but it is more study than he expected, so he only caused a small slash. Thanks to his physical boost from the previous rat Helo’s arm is capable of clashing with the rat’s tail without buckling or losing his dagger this time. Now standing over the rat on the right-side Helo is about to plunge his dagger down only to get tackled from the left. This causes him to only leave a grazing wound on its leg. The rat that tackled him leaves a bite mark on his thigh but thankfully in the tumble the rat let go of Helo.

Rolling back up to his feet Helo realizes that these rats have higher defense than him and strength. He is only a little bit faster than them. Deciding to play more into his strengths Helo breathes a sigh of relief as he turns around and dashing into the forest of stone. Taking a deep breath in, he pulls power from his heart and as he breaths out his entire body is consumed by a tornado of shadow concealing him. By the time the shadow swirl is gone so is Helo.

The three rats stop in their track as they follow him because all signs of his presence are gone. The only potential sign they could see would be a foot print or the claw mark on the stalagmites above their heads. Unfortunately for them they are not intelligent enough to look up.

As soon as Helo is hidden, he jumps off the ground and grabs onto the stalagmite to his right side, plating his feet he jumps off of it and further right before doubling back and coming up behind the rats. With his momentum Helo pulls himself up toward the tip of the stalagmite his is pushing off up and onto the top of the one directly behind the rats.

Landing with a single foot on the tip of the stalagmite Helo continues upward and forward directly over the rats. Jumping into the air to give himself as much time to prepare his attack Helo draws his kukri and pulls his aura into both his blades. As he descends onto the rats a swirl of shadows follows in his blade wake and bleeds off his falling body, like a dark line drawn onto reality itself.

Slamming the two blades into a rat each they have enough strength to pierce straight through their sculls. With a “Umpf” of hitting the ground Helo lets go of both blades and dives at the final rat in front of him. Tackling the rat, he pours his power into his claws; his happens far faster and easier than his blades. Then he slashes his claws along its neck. Feeling a bit peckish Helo drains a mouthful of blood before turning around and sighing as the wound in his leg visible heals.

Grabbing the two blades that are in the corpses Helo uses his enhanced senses to back track into the tunnel while avoiding all of the creatures. Looking over the cavern again Helo sees that due to the noises he made the monsters are riled up.
