Chapter Seventy-Five: Ascension

  [Location: Ashglass Hollow The Solarium]

The Solarium sat near the district’s center, marked by the glowing greenhouse symbol. It was the game’s inn on the surface, but more importantly, it had a lower level.

  The Hall of Advancement.

A handful of other Level 15 and 16 players lingered near the entrance, some examining stat sheets, others discussing build options. The atmosphere was different here like everyone understood this was a turning point.

“Big moment,” Naō added. “You two are about to specialize. Permanently change how you play.”

  Kaiden pushed open the door.

  [Hall of Advancement Access Available]

  Requirement: Level 15+

The chamber was circular, with walls lined with murals depicting battles, growth, and transformation of figures ascending through stages of power. At the center stood a raised platform with branching paths marked by different colored light radiating outward.

Kaiden stepped onto the central platform.

  [WARNING]

This path is irreversible. This path scales with Photosphere development, success and failure are amplified. This path may deviate significantly from standard game mechanics

Kaiden read through the description three times.

He thought about the boss fight. About hitting zero LP. About that death timer counting down while his real-world heart stuttered. About being helpless.

If he walked away now, he’d stay where he was. Level 15 with no specialization. Weak. Unable to progress further. But if he took this path...

This path scales with Photosphere development, success and failure are amplified.

  Success and failure.

He thought about Alex. He had been trying to understand this. And now he was gone.

Kaiden’s hand trembled slightly. But then he remembered that moment in the Hollow Heart chamber. The helplessness. The certainty that he was about to die and there was nothing he could do.

He couldn’t go through that again. He couldn’t stay weak.

If this path made him strong enough to survive, then there was only one choice.

  He selected Abyssal Reaver.

  [CLASS ADVANCEMENT CONFIRMED]

  New Class: Abyssal Reaver

  Level 15

His scythe dissolved into particles, then reformed. The blade was darker now, almost translucent, with water flowing through it. The edge shimmered between solid and liquid, never settling on one state.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

His avatar’s appearance shifted. The water-shadow aura that usually clung to his weapon now wrapped around his entire body like living smoke. His eyes gained a faint pale blue with flecks of violet.

The transformation was seamless. Like the game had been waiting for this moment and finally allowed his avatar to become what it was meant to be.

Kaiden stepped off the platform, and immediately felt eyes on him.

Other players had stopped mid-conversation and stared. It was nothing like the standard advancement effects happening around the room. Where other players got new armor tints or effects, Kaiden looked like he’d stepped out of a different game entirely.

“What the…,” someone muttered nearby. “What class is that?”

Kaiden ignored them, waiting for Ironstride.

  Then the system pinged.

  [Party Member: Ironstride]

  Class Advancement: COMPLETE

  New Class: Aegis Warden

Her armor had transformed. What had been leather armor was now made of steel and interwoven with gold filigree. Her shield was larger, its surface covered in intricate patterns that glowed.

  She looked like a Valykrie.

She spotted Kaiden and walked over, and immediately the whispers intensified.

  “Two of them?”

  “What server are they from?”

“That’s not in any of the class guides.”

  [Advanced Skill Tree: ACCESSIBLE]

Naō approached, looking between them with wide eyes. “Okay, you both look completely different. And everyone in here is staring.”

  “Can’t help that,” Ironstride said.

“No, I guess not.” Naō glanced around at the other players.

Kaiden had already noticed. More players were pointing now, some pulling up recording interfaces, others whispering rapidly into party chat.

They’d be on the forums within an hour.

“Nothing we can do about it,” Kaiden said. “Let’s just get out of here.”

They headed toward the stairs, and the crowd parted. Like no one was quite sure what they were looking at.

Kaiden pulled up his skill tree again as they climbed back to the main floor.

“I need to get stronger,” he said quietly once they were away from the crowd. “What happened in the Hollow Heart chamber, that can’t happen again.”

“You survived,” Ironstride pointed out. “That’s what matters.”

“Because you saved me. Next time I might not have that.” Kaiden closed the skill tree. “So I need to be strong enough that I don’t need saving.”

The determination in his voice was clear.

He had to get stronger. Strong enough to never feel that helpless again. Strong enough to survive whatever had taken Alex and find out what happened to him.

“Then we progress together,” Ironstride said. “Unlock these skill trees and push forward.”

“After we sleep,” Naō added firmly. “Because you two are walking end-game content now, but we’re all about to pass out.”

“Yeah,” he admitted. “Sleep sounds good.”

They found spots in the main Solarium to log out from. They activated their logout timers.

  [Logout Timer: 10 seconds]

[Hospital Server Room Time: 3:58 AM]

Kaiden pulled off his VR headset, blinking against the fluorescent lights.

The server room was quiet, just the hum of machines and the soft beeping from patient monitoring equipment. His workstation sat in the corner, surrounded by racks of hardware that hosted the game servers patients used during downtime and therapy sessions.

One patient was still logged in; an older man in his sixties recovering from surgery. Kaiden could see his vitals on the auxiliary monitor. Playing some low-intensity crafting content.

Kaiden stood, stretching. His heart rate thankfully had regained its normal circadian rhythm, but that still didn’t erase the echo feeling.

The death timer. The helplessness. It was still with him.

  “Yo, Kaiden.”

He turned. Cam stood in the doorway, tablet in hand.

“How are you feeling on your second night shift?” Cam asked, popping a chip in his mouth. “You feeling the after effects yet? All I have to say, decaf will not help you.”

“Nah. Still doing alright. Just got caught in a long session,” Kaiden admitted.

  “Dungeon run?”

Kaiden nodded. “Yeah, just made it to level 15. How’s your journey so far?”

“Nice. Still making my way toward the Crossing, but just taking my time, you know?” Kaiden nodded, he didn’t want to be rude, but conversation was not on his top priority right now. “Anyway, Mr. Chen’s probably good for another hour, but I can handle lockup if you want to head out early. Everything’s stable.”

  Kaiden hesitated. “You sure?”

“Yeah, man. You look like you’re about to fall over. Go home, get some sleep.”

“Thanks.” Kaiden grabbed his bag, logging out of his workstation. “I owe you one.”

The hospital corridors were quiet at this hour, just the night staff and the occasional nurse making rounds. He took the stairs down instead of the elevator, needing the movement to clear his head.

He made it toward her floor, then walked down the hall until he was in front of stopped Mina’s door.

Kaiden pushed open the door quietly.

Mina lay there, connected to monitoring equipment. Her vitals were stable, breathing normal. The doctors called it a dissociative state. They were still running tests but Kaiden knew it was more than that.

He pulled up a chair, sitting beside the bed.

“Hey,” he said quietly. “It’s me again, big bro.”

No response. Just the steady beep of the monitors.

“I hit Level 15 tonight. Got a unique class advancement. Abyssal Reaver.” He leaned forward, elbows on his trembling knees. “I almost died in there, Mina. Like actually died. LP hit zero and I was seconds away from respawn. It felt real.”

  The monitor beeped steadily.

“I’m going to figure this out,” Kaiden said. “Whatever’s happening, I’m going to find answers. And I’m going to wake you up.”

He sat there for another five minutes, just watching her breathe.

Then he stood, squeezed her hand once, and left.

He headed for the bus stop, the weight of exhaustion finally catching up to him. He would get stronger. He would find the truth. No matter what it cost.
