Chapter Seventy-Three: Hollowfront Verge

[Location: Dimming Sun Temple Hollow Heart Antechamber]

  [Party Status: SEPARATED]

The darkness pressed down like a physical weight.

Kaiden lay on root-woven stone, every breath sending fresh waves of pain through his avatar’s systems. His HUD was a mess of red warnings and critical status alerts that he couldn’t afford to focus on right now.

  [LP: 38/270]

  [Critical Status: Maintained]

Liri hovered above him, her small hands glowing with weak green light. The healing pulse was barely registering, suppression crushing her output down to almost nothing.

  [HP Restored: +4%]

  [LP: 49/270]

Not enough, but at least it kept him alive.

“Nyte, you have to get up,” Liri said, voice trembling. “The ground is moving.”

She was right. The stone beneath him was shifting and with each pulse, he felt the drain.

  [Environmental Effect: Root Pressure]

  Effect: LP -3/sec while stationary

  Warning: Movement required

“Great,” Kaiden muttered, forcing himself to sit up. His limbs felt like lead. The fall damage had been worse than he’d thought, and the environmental suppression at this depth was crushing.

  [Environmental Effect: Resonance Suppression III]

  Skill cost: +25%

  LP/GP/SP regeneration: -60%

  Movement speed: -15%

  A new system notification appeared.

  [Major Boss: The Hollow Heart]

  Status: Rousing from dormancy

Estimated time to full awakening: 8-12 minutes

Eight to twelve minutes until the boss went fully active. And he was alone, critically wounded, with a healer who could barely function.

Kaiden pulled up the party menu with shaking hands.

  [Party Status]

  Nyte: LP (CRITICAL)

Ironstride: Status Unknown (OUT OF RANGE)

Mixmaster: Status Unknown (OUT OF RANGE)

They were alive. At least the system wasn’t showing them as dead. But “out of range” in an instanced dungeon meant either massive distance separation or environmental interference.

He tried party chat again. “Ironstride? Naō?”

  Nothing.

The heartbeat sound was getting louder. It rattled throughout his body, making his teeth ache, and with each pulse, the chamber reacted. Roots twisted along the walls. The dying bioluminescent moss flickered back to life in faint bursts, syncing with the rhythm. And underneath it all, that constant drain.

  [LP: -3]

  [LP: 46/270]

“We need to move,” Kaiden said, getting to his feet. His legs protested, but they held.

Liri pointed toward a narrow tunnel breaching the chamber wall. “That way. The pressure’s less intense over there.”

He trusted her instincts and started moving. Every step was an effort, the movement speed debuff making him feel like he was wading through water. But the moment he started walking, the LP drain stopped.

  [Root Pressure: Negated by movement]

The tunnel was claustrophobic, barely wide enough for his avatar to fit through. Roots lined the walls like exposed nerves, and as he passed, some of them moved. Like they were sensing him.

“The temple knows we’re here,” Kaiden said quietly.

“It doesn’t like you,” Liri said. “The Photosphere. It’s... fighting back. I can feel it.”

He could too. His Photosphere was pushing against the suppression, trying to carve out space for him to function.

The tunnel opened into a larger passage, and immediately Kaiden noticed the change in air quality.

  [Environmental Hazard Detected: Echo Spores]

  Effect: Induces auditory hallucinations

  Duration: While in contaminated area

  Severity: Increases with exposure time

“Don’t breathe it in,” Liri said, pulling close to him.

Too late. He’d already taken three breaths before the warning appeared.

The first voice hit him like a punch.

  “Kaiden, where are you.”

  “think he’s dead.”

They sounded like Ironstride and Naō’s voice, but there wasn’t any hint of emotion in it. It was almost like he was an audio recording or something to render their voices.

  “should’ve stayed together.”

  “your fault.”

“That’s not real,” Kaiden said out loud, more to himself than anyone. “It’s just the spores.”

But the voices kept coming. Overlapping each other.

  “Alex knew.”

“he knew and he didn’t tell you.”

  “you’re going to die here.”

That one was Alex’s voice, or what Kaiden remembered of it. His Photosphere pulsed harder, like it was trying to burn the contamination out of his system.

“Nyte!” Liri’s voice cut through the noise. “This way. The spores are thinner over here!”

He followed her guidance, moving toward the left side of the passage where the golden cloud was less dense. The voices faded but didn’t disappear entirely just background noise now, whispers at the edge of hearing.

Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

  [Echo Spore Exposure: Reduced]

  Hallucination intensity: Decreased

They pushed through the contaminated section, and after two minutes that felt like twenty, they emerged into clearer air.

Kaiden leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

  [LP: 46/270]

  “Look,” Liri said, pointing ahead.

Scraped along the root-covered wall in a pattern Kaiden recognized Ironstride’s defensive stance when she was tanking multiple enemies at once. He moved closer, examining the damage. The roots here were scorched in places, chemical burns that could only come from one source.

Kaiden pressed his hand against the shield marks, and for just a moment, he felt it, a faint resonance. Echo of Ironstride’s Photosphere, still lingering in the stone where her shield had made contact.

The passage descended sharply, roots giving way to something that looked more like petrified wood. The bioluminescence here was almost completely dead—just faint traces of dying light that barely illuminated five feet ahead.

  [Combat Initiated]

  Enemies Detected: Hollowed Sentinels (x2)]

[Enemy: Hollowed Sentinel — Level 13]

Traits: Plant Construct | Boss-Linked | Regeneration (Slow)

Behavior: Guard approach to Hollow Heart chamber

They were humanoid plant-shell constructs animated by whatever power controlled the Hollow Heart. Their bodies were hollow bark and twisted vine, held together by pulsing bioluminescent threads that served as artificial nervous systems.

The first Sentinel moved, slow, deliberate. It raised one arm, and thorn vines shot out like spears.

Kaiden activated Vine Step, blinking backward. The vines impaled where he’d been. The second Sentinel went left, trying to cut off his escape route.

Kaiden dashed forward with Moonlit Surge, leaving the water trail behind him. Not for the buff—there was no one to use it—but for the mobility.

  [Skill: Moonlit Surge]

He closed distance on the first Sentinel, scythe already swinging and carved the attack across its torso.

  [Damage: -134 LP]

  [Enemy HP: 76%]

The Sentinel retaliated with a vine-wrapped fist swinging in a wide arc. Kaiden ducked under it, using the momentum to spin into Riptide Fang.

  [Damage: -98]

  [Combo: 2x]

But the second Sentinel was on him now. He felt the impact before he saw it.

  [Damage: -47 LP]

  [LP: -47]

  [LP: 2/270]

Red flashed across his HUDs vision:

  [CRITICAL: 1%]

  [Warning: Death imminent]

  Liri’s healing pulse fired immediately.

  [LP Restored: +6%]

  Barely enough. But enough.

Kaiden activated Bleeding Horizon, the AoE skill catching both Sentinels in its radius.

  [Damage: -87 LP, -91 LP]

The first Sentinel’s HP dropped below 50%. It staggered, regeneration trying to compensate.

  [Regeneration: +15 HP]

  Not fast enough.

Kaiden pressed the advantage. Going forward with twilight Rend into the damaged Sentinel. Riptide Fang to chain. Another Bleeding Horizon when his AP allowed it.

  Numbers scrolled past his vision.

  [Combo Chain: 6x]

  [Total Damage: 584]

  [Enemy Defeated: Hollowed Sentinel (x1)]

  One down.

The second Sentinel was at 68% HP and closing fast. Vines lashing out in rapid succession, forcing Kaiden to dodge, weave, burn action points on movement skills just to stay alive.

His LP ticked down with every mistake.

  [Damage: -31 LP]

  Liri healed again.

  [HP Restored: +5%]

But her healing was barely keeping pace with the damage. Kaiden couldn’t sustain this. He needed to end it now.

He feinted left, then activated Vine Step to blink right appearing behind the Sentinel. His scythe came up in a rising arc.

  [Critical Strike!]

  [Damage: -198 LP]

  [Enemy HP: 38%]

The Sentinel spun, faster than its size suggested it should. Vine-wrapped arm caught Kaiden across the chest.

  [Damage: -52 LP]

  [LP: -52]

His vision flickered. LP at 4%. One more hit and he was dead.

  [HP Restored: +4%]

  [LP: 15/270]

Kaiden’s Photosphere pulsed in response, Shadow-water energy rippling across his skin like armor.

  The Sentinel attacked again.

  [Damage Reduced: Photosphere Defense Response]

  [Damage: -28]

  [LP: -28]

  He had seconds. Maybe less.

  [Damage: -167]

  [Enemy HP: 9%]

The Sentinel staggered. Kaiden followed up with Riptide Fang before it could recover.

  [Damage: -124]

  [Enemy Defeated: Hollowed Sentinel (x1)]

Both constructs collapsed into fragments of bark and vine.

  [Combat Complete]

  [EXP: +380]

  [Item Dropped: Hollowed Core Fragment]

  [Item Dropped: Minor Restorative Essence]

Kaiden dropped to one knee, breathing raggedly despite this being a video game. His hands were shaking, adrenaline dump even through VR.

  [LP: 13/270]

  [Critical: 5%]

He grabbed the Restorative Essence before his LP could drop further.

  [Item Used: Minor Restorative Essence]

  [LP Restored: +35%]

  [LP: 108/270]

“That was too close,” Liri said, voice shaky.

“Yeah.” Kaiden stood slowly, testing his balance. “But we’re still here.”

The passage continued deeper. The architecture changed the further he went. The vibrated and pounded in rhythm, and the roots lining the corridor shifted subtly toward him as he passed.

  Like the temple was watching.

The deeper he went, the stronger the pull became. Something ahead was calling to his Photosphere, and his Photosphere was responding.

  Then he felt it.

  Ironstride’s Photosphere.

It was faint, distorted by distance and interference, but unmistakable. Her signature, that green-gold resonance, and it was reacting violently.

His HUD flickered with a message he’d never seen before.

  [Secondary Resonance Detected]

  Source: Ironstride (Photosphere Bearer)]

  Status: Sync Threshold Unstable

Warning: Calibration stress exceeding safe parameters

Whatever was happening to her Photosphere, it wasn’t good. The calibration process he’d gone through over days was being forced to accelerate. And sensation, it was fighting back hard.

“She’s close,” Kaiden said. “Somewhere on the other side of this chamber.”

  “Can you reach her?”

  “Not yet. But soon.”

He pushed forward. The tunnel opened ahead, revealing faint light—the first real illumination he’d seen since falling into the depths.

  Party chat crackled.

Static resolved just long enough for Ironstride’s voice to slip through.

  “Kaiden, stay alive. We’re coming….”

  Then nothing.

  But it was enough.

They were coming. He just had to hold out until they reached him.

  [Location: The Hollow Heart Chamber]

The tunnel opened into a cathedral of roots.

The chamber was massive, easily a hundred meters in diameter, with a ceiling that disappeared into darkness above. And suspended in the center, held by webbed roots thick as tree trunks, was the boss.

  The Hollow Heart.

A gargantuan seed the size of a house, covered in bark that pulsed with bioluminescent veins. Each pulse sent light rippling across its surface in patterns that almost looked like neural pathways.

The chamber floor was circular, hardened bark and petrified root forming a natural arena.

And in the center of it all, the heartbeat was deafening.

  [Boss Battle Initiated]

[The Hollow Heart — Level 15 (World Boss — Dungeon Variant)]

  Phase 1: Dormant Rousing

  Status: Awakening in progress...

Kaiden stepped into the arena. The moment his foot touched the hardened bark, systems updated.

  [Instance Locked: Boss Encounter Active]

[Exit Conditions: Defeat boss OR party wipe]

[Reinforcements: Allowed if party members reach arena]

So Ironstride and Naō could join if they got here in time. That was something.

  Kaiden checked his resources.

Tonics were low. Three HP flasks left. No emergency resurrection items because those cost real money and he was broke. His movement was sluggish from suppression. Healing was barely functional. And he was facing a Level 15 world boss.

  Alone.

“Nyte...” Liri floated close, trembling but determined. “What do we do?”

“We hold,” Kaiden said. “Keep the boss focused on me. Survive Phase 1. Trust that Ironstride and Naō will break through.”

  “And if they don’t?”

  “Then we improvise.”

The Hollow Heart shook. Strong enough that dust shook loose from the ceiling, cracks appeared across its bark surface, luminous fissures that looked like dozens of eyes all of them fixed on Kaiden.

  The heartbeat became deafening.

Roots lifted from the chamber floor, curling like limbs preparing to strike. The bioluminescent veins across the boss’s surface flared bright enough to hurt.

A single massive pulse knocked Kaiden to one knee.

  [Damage: -34]

  [Status Applied: Stunned (2s)]

His HUD flashed with the final warning.

[Phase 1: Root Maw Cycle — Beginning]

[Boss Pattern: Summoning | Area Denial | Resource Drain]

  [Weak Point: Currently Protected]

  The Hollow Heart moved.

Hundreds of them, descending from above and erupting from below, creating a forest of thorned limbs that blocked sight lines and carved the arena into deadly segments. The first root lashed out like a striking serpent.
