[Welcome Back, Nyte]
[Sync Status: Stable | Session Time Remaining: 13h 40m]
The world loaded in layer by layer, sound first, then light. Kaiden blinked as Ashglass resolved around him. The plaza was quieter than it had been during the siege. NPC patrols moved in set loops and players drifted in smaller clusters, turning in quests or sorting loot at the edge of the market.
Something tugged his cloak.
“You’re back!”
Liri bounced into his field of view, hair catching the dim outpost glow. Her cloak fluttered as she hopped once, like she had to make sure gravity still worked.
“I was getting worried you forgot about me,” she said, lower lip jutting just a little.
Kaiden’s hand moved and ruffled her hair.
“Nah,” he said. “You remember what I said, right?”
Her smile lit up her whole HUD frame. “Uh-huh, that you’d get me home.”
“Right, and that’s a promise. Now I’m going to meet up with the rest of our friends.”
Kaiden looked at his friends list:
[Friend Online: Ironstride]
Location: Ashglass Outpost Inner Barracks
Another ping followed a second later.
[Friend – Online: Naō (Mixmaster)]
Location: Ashglass Outpost – West Market
Status: “I am deeply regretting timezones”
Kaiden snorted.
A second later, his voice filtered through the party chat.
Mixmaster: You know it’s like… almost 2 a.m. over here, right?
Nyte: You log in at worse times than this on purpose.
Mixmaster: Yeah, but then I get to complain. It’s part of my brand.
[Ironstride joined the party.]
Ironstride: Where are you?
Nyte: “North end of the plaza,” he said aloud. “Near the siege board.”
“On my way,” Ironstride answered.
Naō arrived first, weaving through the tail end of the crowd with a lazy gait, flask dangling from his belt.
“Hey,” he said, lifting his chin in greeting. “I’m blaming you if I end up having vivid dreams tonight.”
“You could always log off,” Kaiden said.
Naō made a frown on his face. “And miss the part where you explain why your gem freaked out over our Tank’s new toy? Absolutely not.”
Ironstride emerged from the direction of the barracks a moment later. She had her hair pulled back, with a rigid posture, like someone carrying the world on their shoulders.
“So, where should we talk?” she said.
Kaiden scanned the plaza. Too many players milling around, too many floating chat bubbles. He jerked his head toward the inner ring.
“There’s that little training yard behind the forge,” he said. “No one hangs there unless they’re dueling.”
Ironstride nodded. “Lead the way.”
The training yard sat behind a heavy wooden gate, open just wide enough for a party to slip through. Dummies lined one side. The clank of the forge on the other side of the wall bled through in an even rhythm.
Kaiden pulled up his HUD and flicked privacy settings.
[Party Privacy: Enabled Local Chat Restricted to Party]
Ironstride reached into her inventory and pulled the Photosphere out.The Bastion Photosphere hovered between them, rotating slowly.
The tooltip floated next to it: Bastion Photosphere (Key Item)
Naō whistled under his breath. “That’s not normal key item text.”
Ironstride’s brows knit. “You’d know?”
“I mean,” Naō began. “Yeah. I was there when Kaiden’s Photosphere acted out the first time”
Kaiden wasn’t listening to them. His focus was on the Bastion sphere. His own Photosphere was quiet now, but he remembered the pulse. The HUD flicker. The way it had felt like another heartbeat answering his.
He slid his thumb through a gesture, pulling up his own notification log to match her Photosphere’s notification:
[External Artifact Detected]
Type: Core Adjacent / Defensive Alignment
He broadcast the window to the party.
Naō’s eyes narrowed. “Core Adjacent,” he read. “Okay, so Ironstride has the one made for tanks then.”
“When mine kicked in,” Kaiden said slowly, “it didn’t come with a tooltip. Just… nothing.”
Naō made a face. “Maybe one Photosphere has to be active in order for all of them to start coorperating?”
That was a thought, he considered.
Liri, who had been quietly circling the sigil like it might sing to her, finally spoke up.
“It smells the same,” she said.
Ironstride blinked. “Smells?”
Liri nodded, nose wrinkling. “Like… it holds big choices. Strong power resides inside of it.”
Naō’s gaze flicked between Ironstride and Kaiden. “Is this where we admit your gem has a sibling now?”
Ironstride’s jaw tightened. “If this thing is the same type of artifact as yours that means what, exactly? That I’m going to blow up in a tournament next?”
“Hopefully with less homicide attempts,” Naō muttered.
Kaiden shrugged. “I don’t know yet. Alex didn’t exactly leave patch notes.”
The silence stretched for a moment.
Ironstride finally exhaled. “Okay. What do we know?”
Kaiden closed the notification.
“Mine was triggered during combat,” he said. “Duress, low LP, too much pressure. The first full shift was when Crow tried to literally kill me in front of a live audience.”
“Trauma unlock,” Naō shivered.
“Since then, I can more or less call Overflow when I want,” Kaiden continued. “Well…not without some side effects.”
Naō snapped his fingers as if to remind him. “Like almost passing out in real time.”
“Yeah,” Kaiden said. “And probably to whatever Black Dhalia planned under all this.”
Ironstride’s eyes cooled at that name. “That’s the name Ashlander mentioned.”
“Yeah,” Kaiden said. “Francesca confirmed it. Kinda.”
Naō rolled that around in is head for a second, but didn’t push it. He was sure he didn’t trust her either, but that was all they had to go on.
Ironstride turned the Photosphere over in her hand again. The green light inside it shivered.
“So,” she said. “If this is my version of your ticking bomb… how do we stop it from going off in the worst possible way?”
Kaiden hesitated, then shrugged one shoulder. “Honestly? I don’t think we do. I think we figure out how to aim it.”
Naō snorted. “Of course your answer to ‘explosive artifact’ is ‘point it at something else.’”
“It worked for every other boss,” Kaiden said.
“That’s not… okay, yeah, fair,” Naō admitted.
Ironstride huffed out something that wasn’t quite a laugh. “So I’m supposed to just keep doing whatever? Hold lines, build threat, and hope the system decides I’ve ‘synced’ enough to flip whatever switch this thing is sitting on?”
“For now?” Kaiden said. “Yeah. See where it throws us. If my gem reacted to it, odds are the next step is baked into the game somewhere.”
Naō tilted his head. “And what, we get… another transformation? Like your Dusk Bringer but Tank? Bastion… Fortitude, or something?”
“Bastion Fortitude,” Ironstride said dryly. “Sure. Let’s just name my impending life crisis something dramatic while we’re at it.”
Naō snapped his fingers. “Yes. Locking that in. Bastion Fortitude. Calling it now.”
Kaiden couldn’t help it; his mouth twitched. “If the system actually uses that, I’m blaming you.”
“Yes, he exclaimed. “I want the credit when you two start glowing in matching cinematic cutscenes.”
???°?°???
Ashglass Command was back to its normal tense bustle when they ducked into the tent again. The same commander stood over the table, fingers planted on either side of the map like she was physically holding the region in place.
“You’re back,” she said. “Good. The readings from the siege barely finished compiling.”
Kaiden pulled the Fragmented Signal from his inventory. It hovered over the map, projecting thin, wavering lines of green across the region. The pale cluster pulsed over one specific wooded hex.
[Quest Turn-In: Fragmented Defensive Signal]
HUD text slid over his vision.
[Collapse of Day: Signal Path Identified]
New Quest Unlocked: Heart of the Grove (Pale Grove – Inner Roots)
Objective: Investigate the disturbance at the Heart of the Grove
The map on the table shifted, zooming in on the Pale Grove region they’d already cleared once. The familiar pathways and glades blurred, then peeled back. Underneath, a darker layer appeared, a spiral of roots winding downward.
“There,” the commander said, tapping the new mark. “We thought the Pale Grove was stabilized after your earlier run. It’s not. Whatever you pulled from the temple stirred up something under the roots.”
“Sub-dungeon?” Naō said.
“Inner instance,” Kaiden said. “Different layer. Same region.”
Liri’s hand kind of floated over the glowing spiral. “The Heart of the Unseelie,” she whispered. “It was sleeping. You woke it up.”
Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there.
“Great,” Naō muttered. “Love when my dungeon bosses have feelings.”
The commander continued. “Intel tags this as a high-priority continuation of Collapse of Day,” she said. “You already know the terrain. That gives you an edge. But don’t assume the routes are the same.”
“Any other squads flagged for it?” Ironstride asked.
The commander shook her head. “Not yet. This instance keyed to your earlier clear. For now, it’s yours.”
[Main Questline: Collapse of Day – Updated]
Next Objective: Travel to Pale Grove – Heart of the Grove (Inner Roots)
The commander slid a data crystal across the table.
“Slot this at the entry ward once you find it,” she said. “Command wants live readings this time. No more fragments.”
Kaiden took it. The crystal hovered in his hand, faint light pulsing in sync with his HUD.
[Item Acquired: Grove Resonance Shard]
Effect: Activates monitoring array at designated anomaly site.
???°?°???
They regrouped just inside the Outpost gate, the teleport node humming behind them.
“Last chance to bail,” Naō said, fiddling with his belt vials. “We could go fishing. Maybe do a nice, relaxing fetch quest. Something without the word ‘Heart’ in it.”
“You’re the one who signed up to be a support main,” Kaiden said.
“Yeah, for regular trauma. Ugh, fine.”
Ironstride checked her gear one more time. “If this dungeon is tied to our… ‘Core Adjacent’ status,” she said, glancing at him, “then we’re not skipping it. Not if it pushes answers.”
Kaiden nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “Alex passed through places like this. Francesca thinks RTS is a map. If that’s true, this is one of the pins on it. I’m not walking past it.”
Naō sighed. “I hate how reasonable all that sounds.”
A system prompt waited at the teleport crystal.
[Teleport Available: Pale Grove – Perimeter Ring]
Cost: 20VG per party member
Instance: “Heart of the Grove” Accessible on Arrival
He confirmed.
[Teleport Party Travel Confirmed]
Pale Grove’s perimeter ring looked the same at first glance: pale trunks, soft grass, and a mist-threaded path cutting through shallow hills. Sunlight here came through in muted silver instead of gold, like it always did.
But something felt… different.
Kaiden’s HUD picked up the change before his eyes did.
[Zone: Pale Grove – Outer Ring]
Environmental Effect: Root Echo
Footsteps and speech may seem delayed or doubled.
Aggro Radius +10% for disturbance effects.
Naō clapped once. The sound echoed half a second later, like someone else had done it farther down the path.
“Okay, that’s mildly eerie,” he said.
A marker pulsed at the edge of the minimap.
[Instance Entrance: Heart of the Grove – Inner Roots]
Distance: 640m, Follow Root lined Trail
Kaiden started walking. The others fell into step. They passed a bent willow over the creek, a split stone where some players killed a sub-boss. The grass bent toward the path instead of away. As they walked, light dimmed. The trail finally narrowed into a throat of twisted trunks. A faint green glow seeped out from the cracks between them.
[You are approaching: Heart of the Grove – Inner Roots]
Dungeon Type: Root Core Instance
Ironstride stopped just shy of the glowing gap. The Bastion Photosphere in her inventory pulsed bright enough that Kaiden could see it through the panel.
“Feel that?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Kaiden said. His Photosphere hummed in response. Liri lifted her hands and touched the air above the entrance. The light flared under her fingers, then settled.
“The Heart recognizes you,” she said, looking at Ironstride. Then at Kaiden. “And it knows you broke its sleep before.”
“Guess it’s not a fan of my work,” Kaiden smirked.
Naō nudged his shoulder. “Look at it this way: if this place is keyed to the two of you, it means we’re not just walking into a random deathtrap. It’s a personal deathtrap.”
“That’s… that’s worse man,” Kaiden said with a chuckle.
“Yeah,” Naō agreed. “Yeah, it is, but it’s on-brand for us, so.”
A system prompt slid up in front of them.
[Enter Instance: Heart of the Grove – Inner Roots?]
Accept / Decline
Kaiden hit Accept.
Ironstride did the same. Naō followed.
The trunks peeled open like a slow inhale. Green light spilled out, swallowing them whole.
[Instance Loaded: Heart of the Grove – Inner Roots]
[Party Status: Synced]
[Environmental Effect: Root Echo – Footsteps may double | Aggro Radius +10%]
The air inside the Heart of the Grove felt heavier the moment they stepped in humid, mineral-rich air, tinged with the scent of moss and the smell of water. Light pulsed in the roots overhead, traveling like veins beneath translucent bark. Each throb lined up a little too closely with the hum to Kaiden’s photosphere.
Ironstride stopped just inside the threshold. “You feel that?” she murmured.
A soft ping slid through their HUDs.
[Synergy Detected ]
Party Buff Applied:
? DEF +5%
? AGI +5%
Naō squinted at the notification. “Okay, that’s kinda cool. Like it senses that we’re a party that needs protecting.”
Ironstride raised her shield. “Fine by me. I’m choosing to go with whatever helps me survive.”
Kaiden didn’t say anything, but the thought was already there, if two Photospheres do this… what happens when more than one exist?
Liri hovered in the middle of their formation. “I like this place,” she said. “It feels… warm.”
“It feels like a dungeon trying to decide if it wants to kill us,” Naō muttered.
Kaiden rolled his shoulders. “Come on. Let's follow the trail.”
The Root Echo effect followed them. Every step accompanied by a soft after-sound, a half-second later, like their past selves were lagging behind. Vines draped from above like curtains. Kaiden swore he saw figures in the roots, faces pressed into curved knots watching.
They walked until the corridor widened into a cavern-like clearing. Pale light glimmered from the floor, pooling around a strange, circular pattern burned into the dirt.
Their HUDs flicked simultaneously.
[Boss Arena Detected]
The monster sprang from the walls. A second later, the floor itself responded. Roots spiraled inward, pulling stone away like petals peeling back. A massive trunk of a living creature rose from the ground. It unfurled in layers, revealing a central body made of twisted bark plates and thick vines pulsing like muscle.
Two hollow, glowing eyes stared back.
[Boss Identified: Root-Cage Warden – Lv. 13]
Traits: Armor Growth / Bind Phase / Root Pressure Field
Behavior: Alternates between Anchor Mode and Chase Mode [Cell Count 10]
Kaiden tightened his grip. “Big one.”
The Warden slammed both arms into the dirt. The arena violently reshaped, vines shooting up to form a ring, sealing them inside.
[Root Cage Engaged]
Arena Size: Reduced
Mobility Penalty: AGI -10%
Naō snapped his wrist and three vials slid into his palm. “Here we go.”
The Warden lunged.
Kaiden sidestepped as its massive arm swung low. [-50 LP] managed to graze him by a bit. Ironstride intercepted the second arm full-force. [-25LP] [Block Successful – Damage Reduced]
“Naō!” Kaiden yelled.
“Already on it!” Naō replied, the two already sync.
[Skill: Corrosive Draught]
Effect: DEF -10% | DoT (15s)
The bubbling mixture sizzled as it coated the Warden’s chest and steam rose from it, making the layer of the bark soften.
Kaiden dashed in with Twilight Rend so he could exploit the roots defense with a series of curved slashes and light attacks.
[Skill: Twilight Rend] Root Defense Exploited
He chained immediately.
[Skill: Riptide Fang]
Damage: -169 LP | On-Hit Heal +5%
The Warden roared, making the arena shake as chunks of root dislodged from the walls. Its chest plates shifted like a puzzle, exposing vines beneath. The vines shot out.
[Bind Attempt Detected]
“Move out the way!” Kaiden barked.
Ironstride dropped into a defensive stance just as a cluster of vines wrapped around her shield.
[Skill Trigger: Fortified Presence]
Aggro Anchored | DEF +10%
The Warden dragged her forward several feet, claws slamming down in front of her taking out [-61 LP] of damage.
Naō flinched. “I've got you, here!”
[Skill: Stunburst Phial]
Stun: 1.9s
The flash detonated across the arena, stunning the Warden just long enough for Ironstride to wrench free.
Kaiden took the window. Overflow hovered at 48%.
Not yet. Wait for the armor to break.
“Kaiden, right flank,” Naō called out.
Kaiden pivoted sharply and slammed his scythe into a budding armor plate sending an array of attacks that made its life points diminish -62 LP, -70 LP, -68 LP, root defense exploited.
The plate cracked, then split off in a loud snap.
[Armor Broken, Target Vulnerable]
Ironstride surged forward.
[Skill: Bastion Line]
A shimmer of spectral thorns burst up in front of her, anchoring her stance. Allies behind her gain DEF +15% | Ranged Reduction 20%
The Warden snarled, raising both arms for a crushing slam.
Ironstride held firm.
Naō cursed under his breath. “It’s like she's pulling more aggro than usual. Is that because of the Photosphere?”
Kaiden had forgotten about that. Even though she was built for tank status, who knows how much more damage the Photosphere could trigger.
No. He didn’t need to think negative. “She’s got this,” Kaiden muttered. “Probably.”
The Warden slammed down but the Bastion wall held. Barely. Cracks raced across the spectral thorn barrier before it dissipated.
Ironstride staggered back, breathing hard but upright.
“I’m good,” she said. “I’m pulling far more aggro now, but I'm not going to let an over-sized house plant take me out so easily.”
[Skill: Ecliptic Pulse]
Damage: -242 LP
The Warden’s HP dropped into the lower midrange. The vines around them reacted. Thick tendrils rose and wrapped around the Warden’s limbs but not to restrain it.
[Phase Change Detected: Bind Phase → Anchor Form]
The Warden sank its root-mass deeper into the floor. Its arms split into multiple limbs. Hollow “eyes” brightened.
The party buff intensified.
[Synergy Resonance Increased]
? DEF +20%
? AGI +20%
“What the hell,” Naō breathed. “It’s getting stronger just because the two of you are close, this must be the benefits of having more than one Photosphere in a party.”
Ironstride shrugged. “Like I said, whatever keeps me moving and doesn't work against me, I'm good with.”
Liri exclaimed in the back with a toothy grin. “They must like each other!”
That one, made Kaiden do a double take, but he didn’t overthink it because the arena narrowed again.
[Root Pressure Field Active]
LP Drain: 2%/sec while inside inner ring
Mobility Restricted
“Spread out!” Kaiden snapped.
Naō leapt to the side. Ironstride braced again. Liri moved further back out of the arena.
The Warden aimed all four arms toward him.
“Overflow.”
ATK +25% | AGI +45% (+20% from Tank Party Line)
LP Drain: 2%/sec | LP Regen Disabled
The first arm slammed where he’d been. The second grazed his shoulder [-35 LP]. The third he ducked. The fourth, He turned full twist, scythe glowing.
[Skill: Twilight Rend]
Damage: -210 LP | Weak Point, Critical Hit!
The Warden reeled. Kaiden chained several moves at once. Each hit tore through bark, shredded vines, and sent chips flying like sparks.
Overflow drain ticked away at his life points.
[-30 LP]
[-20 LP]
Current LP: 29%.
Naō snapped a vial.
[Skill: Mistbreaker Draught II]
Cleansed LP Drain Debuff
“I’ve got you, too!” Liri exclaimed. Sparkled effects drifted over Kaiden’s and highlighted his body a shimmering green.
[Familiar activated Healing Presence: 50% health regained]
Current LP: 79%
Kaiden felt breath flow easier.
The Warden shifted again, roots coiling into a spear-like form. Its targeted aggro aimed at him.
Ironstride reacted instantly. She charged forward. Her shield slammed into Kaiden’s back, sending him stumbling forward and the spear pierced the space where he had been.
“You’re welcome,” she said through gritted teeth.
Kaiden swallowed hard. “Yeah. Thanks.”
Overflow ticked one last time and dropped off.
The Warden’s HP dipped into the final phase.
[Final Phase: Root Break]
Mechanic: Arena constricts | Multi-Bind | Boss Frenzy
“Everyone MOVE!” Kaiden yelled.
Naō rolled forward, flinging flasks on instinct. Ironstride raised her shield again, bracing.
Liri shouted, “Nyte, behind you!”
He spun.
A root spike lunged from the ground, nearly impaling him. He countered back and sliced it mid-air.
[-112 LP]
The Warden’s limbs blurred in a frenzy of strikes.
Ironstride tanked the brunt.
[-62 LP]
[-58 LP]
[-74 LP]
Naō cursed hard. “Ironstride!”
“I’m fine!” she shouted.
But her LP dipped dangerously low.
Just as her Photosphere lit her inventory like a struck match.
Kaiden heard the hum, felt it, like something deep underground was coming up.
He saw a faint white shimmer flicker behind her shoulders, but it disappeared just a quick.
Her breath hitched.
Ironstride grit her teeth. “Hold the line!”
“Naō, push damage now!” Kaiden barked.
Naō hurled his strongest combo.
[Reactive Mixture: Catalyst Bloom]
Damage: -250 LP | DEF -15%
Kaiden unleashed everything he had left.
[-180 LP]
[-206 LP]
[-230 LP]
[-310 LP]

Ironstride held the final hit. With her shield braced, knees the Warden let out a collapsing groan of defeat and fell apart.

Naō leaned on his knees, panting. “Okay. That was… actually awful.”
Ironstride stood a moment longer, shield still raised, breathing hard.
Kaiden stepped closer. “You good?”
She lowered the shield. “Yeah. Just… something almost happened.”
“I know,” he said. “I saw something. Not sure, but maybe….” he didn’t finish his sentence, he didn't want to jinx it.
Ironstride huffed, nodding in understanding. A new quest window popped into view.
[Collapse of Day – Updated]
Return to Ashglass Command with the Verdant Core Husk.
Naō groaned. “Please tell me we can teleport out.”
[Teleport Node Unlocked: Heart of the Grove]
Liri grabbed Kaiden’s hand, squeezing lightly. “You did good.”
“You too,” he said. Patting her head.
Her face brightened. “I wanna punch a root next time!”
He chuckled. “Sure, I'll let you do the work next time.”
Ironstride hooked her shield onto her back. “Let’s go cash this before any leftover mobs decide to make short work of us.”
The instance faded to white as they teleported out the dungeon area.
