Chapter Thirty-Two: Warden of the Deep Root

The Rotroot Warden stomped once, twice, each step sending tremors through the mossy clearing. The fungal sacs embedded in its bark-armored shoulders glowed with a sickly, pulsing green light.

Kaiden exhaled slowly, tightening his grip around the haft of his scythe. The weapon hummed faintly in his hands, the Photosphere’s presence settling in tandem with his weapon.

The beast pawed the ground like a bull, snorting clouds of toxic vapor from its gnarled snout.

  The Warden charged without warning.

Kaiden rolled aside just before the creature slammed into the earth where he’d been standing, and roots exploded upward from the impact point.

[Root Slam – Area Effect] [-48 LP]

A root grazed his leg mid-roll. He winced, flicked open his inventory, and downed a small health tincture. He barely had time to recover before the Warden’s shoulder sacs began to glow white.

  He activated Torrent Mode.

  “Overflow.”

Water burst from the twin blades of his scythe in a spiraling arc, and with each step he took, he sank into the moss-laden ground. Kaiden lunged forward, slashing through the glowing sac.

  [Critical Hit – 172 Damage]

The sac ruptured with a wet explosion, spraying spores that hissed into steam against the torrent.

The Warden screeched a deep, guttural bellow that shook Kaiden’s eardrums.

  The second sac glowed.

Kaiden struck it just as the beast whipped around with its tail, clipping him across the ribs.

  [-63 LP taken]

He rolled backward, and the second sac burst, bringing the creature to a knee.

  [Phase Transition Triggered]

The Warden howled. Its bark armor cracked and peeled, revealing pulsing, fungal veins beneath. The temperature in the arena dropped several degrees.

[Aggro Shift: Target Locked – Signature Detected]

“Of course,” he muttered, readying his scythe again.

Spore Mines began bubbling up from the earth, mossy spheres that rolled with eerie speed.

  One exploded near his foot.

  [-40 LP]

Kaiden gritted his teeth, dropped a healing mist vial at his feet, and let it bubble as he danced backward. The Warden lunged again, only now its roots lashed out in tethers.

Kaiden slashed one vine, then another, freeing himself as the Warden bucked and charged.

  He whispered the phrase again.

  “Overflow.”

But this time, two copies of himself flickered into being at his flanks.

They mirrored his stance, each wielding translucent versions of his scythe.

  He directed them forward.

The copies rushed the Warden, splitting its attention. One was crushed underfoot [-178 LP] gone from its independent health pool. The other managed to land a hit on the beast’s leg, staggering it.

  Kaiden used the opening.

He lunged with full force, scythe glowing bright blue, slicing into the exposed fungal core beneath the Warden’s chest.

  [Massive Critical – 228 Damage]

The Warden shrieked and collapsed to its knees.

  Final sequence triggered.

Kaiden raised his weapon, water pooling around his feet like a whirlpool. Both Echo Copies returned to his sides, his life points depleting with each summoning of his Torrent mode. It grabbed the creature’s limbs with ambient force, pinning it in place.

  He leapt.

  One last strike.

The scythe cleaved straight through the Warden’s core, and an explosion of spores burst outward, instantly boiled away by the surrounding water burst.

  The clearing went still.

Kaiden breathed out. The Photosphere in his inventory pulsed once, then settled.

The system delayed as if syncing with something deeper. A ping alerted him with a notification:

[Trait Selection Unlocked – Dusk Bringer Tier]

Because your class is bound to an external artifact, standard trait progression has been overridden.

[Photosphere Override Detected… Sync in Progress…]

The UI flickered, then stabilized. Two icons shimmered into view, neither resembling the typical balanced choices he remembered from Level 5.

  Trait 1: Pulse Strike

Your attacks generate a residual aura of delayed motion. After every third consecutive strike, a spectral afterimage repeats your last basic attack at 50% power, targeting the same or nearest foe. Pulse Strike scales with DEX and AGI.

  Trait 2: Moonwake Pressure

When facing a single enemy, your offensive pressure builds the longer you stay locked in direct combat. For every 10 seconds of uninterrupted aggression against one target, gain +3% ATK and +1% AGI (max stacks: 5). Buff resets if target changes or no action taken for 3 seconds.

He remembered something from earlier zones: before he ever touched the Photosphere, there had been a trait called Momentum Edge. A low-tier passive, it rewarded rhythm in battle: the faster he moved, the harder he hit. It had been minor then.

  [Trait Selected: Moonwake Pressure]

Photosphere Synchronization: Confirmed. Trait amplification engaged.

  Aggression-locked scaling increased by 10%.

Kaiden’s scythe pulsed once in his hand, as it agreed with his choice.

A slow rumble echoed through the ground. Behind the Warden’s body, the vine-covered stone gate began to unravel.

  The path forward was open.

Kaiden wiped a bead of sweat from his brow. “Let’s see what secrets you’re guarding.”
