Kaiden sat on the edge of his bed, the soft hum of his older VR unit warming beneath his palms. It still booted with the faint mechanical click he remembered from freshman year before everything started.
His sister was still in the hospital. His parents didn’t want him there overnight, not while the doctors were still running tests. “Get some rest,” his mom had said. But rest felt like a luxury he hadn’t earned.
He slipped on the headset. The login screen for Revolt the Sun swept into place, familiar but tinted now with a heavier undertone. As Kaiden’s silhouette resolved in the loading corridor, he exhaled.
[Welcome Back, Nyte]
The world of Arclight Haven faded in around him, textures sharpening, city sounds blooming. He’d logged out at the inn. The buzz from the arena incident still lingered in the air. Players nearby pointed at him, whispered, or shot him friend requests, which he immediately declined.
“Yo, you’re the Dusk Bringer, right?!” someone called.
Another player stopped in front of him: “Expansion class? Or a Ghost?”
Kaiden ignored them.
Ghost. That was the new term floating around forums; players accused of having early access, closed beta files, or content leaks. He wasn’t any of those, but he wasn’t about to start explaining.
He checked his party log. Naō hadn’t logged in since yesterday, but left a message:
“Let me know when you’re back in. I’m gonna hang low for a bit. That whole arena thing’s got people wilding out.”
Kaiden closed the message and pulled up his quest log. Belgrave’s name was greyed out. No new data. No waypoints.
“Of course,” he muttered.
Just as he started to turn away, a low chime rang.
[Quest Update: A Bloom in the Dark]
[New Path Discovered: Deeproot Expanse – Restricted Region Unlocked]
[New Objective: Trouble with the Seelie and Unseelie Courts]
A blinking marker appeared on his map deep within the Mycoth forest regions.
Kaiden narrowed his eyes.
He tapped the screen. A green pulse spread through the map interface, revealing tangled roots, overgrown ruins, and an “entry difficulty: unknown” tag. No level recommendation. No party requirement.
He accepted without thought.
Just beneath the quest log, another notification appeared.
[ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Sporeborn Immunity – Trait 3/3 Triggered]
[Passive Trait Unlocked: Sporeshield Core – In Progress]
His screen flickered only for a split second. As if something were rewriting behind the interface, but then it was gone.
Kaiden furrowed his brow. “What is a Sporeshield...?”
No explanation. Just a faint green glow now pulsing from the Photosphere icon in his inventory.
He stepped outside the inn and onto the stone bridge that led into the center plaza. Evening sunlight in-game cast golden beams across the walkways. NPCs bustled about. Players sold gear, food, and cosmetics.
He glanced toward the direction of the teleport gate, to lead him back to Cindralis. From there, he would head back to Mycoth and traverse the underbelly of the forest.
The Photosphere pulsed again, as if it were waiting to be used.
The teleport gate shimmered around him as Kaiden stepped forward. His HUD blinked:
[Destination: Cindralis Gate]
[Cost: 50 Verdant Coins]
The glyphs glowed, pulling him in. The world folded, light searing white, then dimmed again.
Cindralis was louder than he remembered. Players hustled across the cobblestones, selling food buffs and dungeon mats. Someone spotted him.
“Nyte, right? The Dusk Bringer!”

Another player laughed, “Ghost confirmed. When the expansion drops!?”
Kaiden kept his hood low and moved fast. He wasn’t here for celebrity status. Not when Mina’s face kept flashing in his memory.
The southern gate loomed ahead, leading back toward the forest. Guards waved him through with idle warnings about “increased spore activity.” He didn’t slow down.
The Mycoth forests were heavier now. Air thick with dust. The sunlight barely pierced the canopy, bleeding into green shadows. Monsters lingered at the edges of his vision, their heads twitching toward him like moths drawn to flame.
The Photosphere pulsed in his inventory.
A pack of fungal stalks shifted ahead, then moved.
[Enemy Detected: Fungal Lurker]
At first glance, they looked like mossy pillars, but as Kaiden passed, three peeled forward, arms made of hardened bark, spore vents glowing at their chests. They exhaled.
[Status Attempt: Poison Spores, Resist Check Passed]
[Cells: 9]
Kaiden grinned. The spores didn’t stick this time.
[Trait Activated: Sporeshield Core]
[(Stage 1 – Passive Resistance +10% to Spore Damage)]
His blade swung wide. He cut off the first round of cells [-64 RD]. The scythe’s crescent edge cut clean. His Torrent Mode bursts water through the stalk’s chest, flooding its spore sac until it bursts.
Kaiden made short work of the other two, who collapsed quickly after.
[Loot Acquired: Spore-Laced Resin x3]
Kaiden stashed it. Craft mats. Naō would’ve known what to do with it.
Deeper into the path, something stumbled into the trail. A stalky Human-shape. Its movements were jerky, arms sagging with moss growths. A face covered in pale lichen turned toward him.
[Enemy Detected: Hollow Shambler]
[Cells 9]
Kaiden froze for half a second. An NPC?
The Shambler groaned and lunged. Kaiden’s instincts kicked in; he slashed its midsection, roots snapping, spore clouds hissing out.
[-30 RD]
[-45 RD]
[-25 RD]
[Cells Broken, Stem Exposed!]
[-82 LP Dealt | Drenched Applied]
It fell apart, limbs scattering like deadwood.
[Loot Acquired: Fractured Guard Token]
Kaiden turned the trinket in his hand. It looked like a guard insignia, split clean down the middle.
“What the hell happened to you?”
He pocketed it and moved on.
The deeper he went, the stranger it became. Roots spiraled into bridges, some stable, others sagging with rot. One collapsed as he crossed. Kaiden Vine stepped to the next ledge, catching himself just before a 20-meter drop.
[Fall Damage Avoided]
His boots hit the next platform. A hiss coiled behind him.
[Enemy Detected: Tangle Serpents]
[Cells: 7]
Vine-like creatures writhed across the bridge, snapping forward to coil around his legs. Kaiden slashed down, blade trailing water as it severed them mid-strike.
One wrapped his ankle, and it took [-22 LP] of his health, but Torrent Mode flooded through the scythe, blasting the serpent off in a shower of shredded vines.
[-30 RD]
[-20 RD]
[Cells destroyed, Stem Exposed!]
Kaiden Vine stepped behind it and attacked from behind, [-30 LP]. The enemy staggered, but Kaiden didn’t let up on his attack and sent another few slashes to its inner roots.

[Loot Acquired: Vine Lash Cord] Consumable: AGI +5 for 60s
The air thickened. Patches of glowing spores littered the ground, sizzling faintly.
[Hazard: Spore Pit – LP Drain -12/sec]
Kaiden skirted wide, keeping his distance. A shimmer crossed his HUD, phantoms of enemies flickering ahead.
[Status Applied: Hallucination Pollen]
He clenched his jaw. “Ignore it.”
He pushed forward, dismissing the fake mobs that evaporated when he swung through them.
At last, the barricaded path came into view. Vines once sealed over it like a living wall, but now they peeled back as if sensing him.
[New Path Discovered: Deeproot Expanse]
The chamber beyond opened into something vast. Roots spiraled downward like highways into a cavern so large it swallowed the light. Bioluminescent fungi pulsed in unnatural colors. The heartbeat-thrum shook through the ground.
Kaiden’s HUD pinged.
[Quest Objective Updated: Trouble with the Seelie and Unseelie Courts]
A stone obelisk jutted from the cavern wall, carved with twisting glyphs: When the courts divided, the roots bled. One embraced the bloom. The other, the rot.
A growl rumbled through the cavern.
[Mini-Boss Detected: Rotroot Warden]
From the shadows, a massive quadruped lumbered forward, tree-bark armor fused with glowing spore sacs across its back. Roots split stone with each step.
Kaiden removed his scythe. Its blade pulsed a vibrant blue as a collective stream formed into a crescent.
“Let’s see what you’ve got.”
