The tunnel narrowed as they passed the crimson threshold. It didn’t just look different down here, the air was dense and radiated heat. The glow of the spores along the walls pulsed like veins under skin, signifying that they were very much alive.
Kaiden was inherently alert, looking from every corner so he wouldn’t be taken out by surprise.
“I hate this place already,” Naō muttered. “Makes me feel on edge.”
Ironstride waved her hand passivly. “Means we’re close to our enemy and goal.”
They descended into a low passage, and the temperature only increased. The moss on the floor smoked, drifting a reddish smog of steam where their boots walked over parts of the floor. The red-tinted fog curled from fungal growths clinging to the ceiling as if forcing it to coropeate.
“Environmental effect incoming,” Naō warned. “Spore heat’s messing with DEF scaling.” He had been watching their stats fall and rise every so often.
Kaiden had a bad feeling creeping in the center of his gut. Naō pulled a vial with icy blue liquid and cracked it at their feet.

They continued forward and were suddenly ambushed. Now Kaiden knew why he had a bad feeling settling in his gut. Several Veil Lurkers came down from the ceiling and surrounded them.

Quadrupeds with elongated limbs and vine-covered backs dropped into formation. Their skin shimmered like glass, they appeared almost invisible until they moved.
Ironstride took the brunt of the attack causing [-37 LP] to take toward her health. Kaiden sliced a Lurker across its spine. Naō ignited a nearby spore cluster with Echoflare Vial, lighting up the battlefield.
Ironstride activated Fortified Presence, regaining control of the aggro field. Kaiden drove his blade into the exposed underbelly of another Lurker, then, going for another follow-attack.

[Cell Broken – Stem Exposed!]
Naō let loose another round of a vial and it burned away at the Veillurkers LP, the damage over time effect of the fire causing its life points to dwindle slowly.
“Yes, you’re up, Kaiden!” Naō gave him the signal.
Kaiden activated his vine step to give him a boost of speed and circled around the enemy. He sliced behind one causing a [Critical Hit] and followed up with several attacks to his life points [-20 LP], [-30 LP], [-25 LP] until they systematically were chopped down to its core. The last one screeched before bursting in a bloom of ash and vines.

Ironstride exhaled. “Phew, I’m not gonna lie, that got close.”
“Same,” Naō said. “These things are worse than the surface bosses.”
The path opened into a sloping cavern. A dome-like root chamber with a shattered platform at its center. Spores coiled upward in slow spirals. In the middle stood the Mycobarrier Beast. It no longer hung from the walls. It dropped down with a gigantic thud and stood upright, hunched like a beast on two legs, fungal antlers stood out to be several feet along. Its core throbbed between its ribs, pulsing in tandem with the thread-like mycelium overhead.

Kaiden didn’t waste any time.
He could see the green dots of the cell that exposed itself to him [Cell Count: 10]. He dashed forward with Vine Step, and appeared on the beast’s left. His blade struck the enemies core [-74 RD]. The beast retaliated immediately with a wide tendril sweep that launched him backward causing him damage. Kaiden took a few steps backward to recalculate his positioning.
“Look overhead!” Naō was circled to the right, launching Corrosive Draught and following with a fire burst from the Echo vial.

Ironstride moved inafter, raising her shield as two root spikes burst from the floor beneath her. It slashed at the beast tearing through the cells one by one.

She gritted her teeth and anchored herself by holding her position. “Don’t just run in blind like that! It’s cells are cycling faster than before, we need to cut through at just the right time.”
The beast let out a roar. A glowing glyph formed beneath it. The terrain twisted beneath their feet like the ground itself was reacting. Something was about to happen, but Kaiden wasn’t going to allow that to happen.
“I’m going in!” Kaiden called out. “Naō, hit that glowing with another fire vial, that should be it’s weak point to drain out some of its cells.”
“Already on it,” Naō said at the same time he tossed the vial at the Mycobarrier. Naō launched Echoflare Vial directly into the glyph. It exploded in a wash of flame.

Kaiden followed up with a thorned strike, appearing above the core, bringing his weapon down in a perfect arc.

The glyph shattered. The beast staggered as it was trying to get a hold of its surroundings, but Ironstride didn’t give it a chance as she slammed her shield into its knee joint, bringing it down.
Kaiden didn’t hesitate again. He used [Thorned Strike], then [Petal Cloak], and [Vine Step]. His strikes cut through the beast’s body and drove his blade into its pulsing heart.

The creature bellowed, then collapsed inwards, roots unraveling, spores exploding in a column of red light.

Kaiden stood over the beast’s remains, chest rising slowly. A low rumble echoed from the far wall. Kaiden noticed it first. A spiral of root-like mechanisms twisting around a central pillar. A rusted lever waited near the center, untouched.
“Was that always there?” Naō asked.
Kaiden reached for the lever, which was partially stuck slightly when he gripped it, but with another effortless tug, it turned, and the floor beneath him gave way.
“Kaiden!” Naō shouted.
The stone plates tilted downward, and Kaiden only had seconds to register what had happened; then he was dropped into darkness. The light disappeared from above.
