EP 5 (Breathing Room)

  Carver’s Point — Interference Zone

Red moves first Jason leads the 25 men that were sent.

Jason signals and splits his unit in half on the fly.

  “Vale — range,” he snaps.

  “You hold.”

Vale peels off with his people, taking higher ground.

Jason keeps the rest and pushes forward, slow and tight.

Ahead, Orange is already dug in.

One Orange group has taken cover inside a tower.

Another is posted near the stronghold, laying suppressive fire into Green positions.

Freeze rounds streak through the snow.

  Green fires back hard.

  Too hard.

  Jason spots it.

A Green cadet on the stronghold wall is manning two mounted MGs, dumping fire into Orange like a lunatic.

  “Jesus,” Jason mutters.

  He slows.

  Thinks.

  Then shifts right.

“Green’s busy,” Jason says into the comm.

  “Vale — eyes up.”

  They move.

  Cut — Andreas’ POV

  Andreas watches through binoculars.

Red units push into the stronghold.

  His jaw tightens.

“What the hell are they doing?” he mutters.

“I told them to take the tower.”

  He lowers the optics.

No time to correct it now.

  Cut — Jeff’s POV

Jeff watches Blue initiate on Green at the tower.

Freeze hits drop bodies on both sides.

  The moment stretches.

  Then breaks.

  “Now,” Jeff says.

  He keys the comm.

  “Lardes. Initiate.”

  Ambush — Tower Zone

  Everything explodes at once.

  Lardes Pushes Blue from behind

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Jeff’s unit pours fire into the tower from the right.

Blue gets hit from three directions at the same time.

Freeze rounds snap through the air.

Cadets lock up mid-stride and crash into the snow.

  Lardes moves fast.

  One down.

  Another.

  Another.

Julian beside him freezes two without speaking.

Someone near Julian goes rigid and falls.

  Julian keep′s moving

Sagoya peels off with a handful of cadets.

  No callout.

  No warning.

  No one notices.

Blue Squad — Kahn & Brody

  Kahn is yelling now.

“Fuck, man — where did they come from?”

Brody fires back, freezing two Red cadets.

“I don’t fucking know,” he snaps.

  “Call Maximus!”

  Kahn pats his chest.

“I dropped my phone running for cover!”

  Brody swears.

“Fuck me — I left mine back at the chokehold.”

  Freeze rounds hammer the position.

  Kahn clenches his jaw.

  “Fuck it,” he says.

  “I’m going for it.”

  “Covering,” Brody shouts.

  Kahn breaks cover.

  Everything blurs.

  He freezes a Green cadet.

  Clips a Red.

A shot tags Jeff in the arm — Jeff stumbles, stays upright.

Kahn reaches the fallen phone, grabs it, turns back.

  Lardes’ POV

  Lardes sees him.

  Running.

  Clutching something.

  Panicked — but focused.

  “That matters,” Lardes thinks.

  Blue fire forces him down.

  Rounds crack past his head.

  Lardes shifts.

  “Julian. Aladin.”

  “There.”

They open up, suppressing the angle.

Lardes moves right, low and fast, boots sliding on ice.

  Finds his lane.

Kahn raises the phone to his ear.

  “Maximus—”

  Freeze round.

  Clean hit to the head.

Kahn locks instantly and drops mid-step.

The phone skids across the snow.

  Carver’s Point — Simultaneous POV

  “Shit!”

Maximus says it at the same moment Brody does.

  Different reasons.

  Same realization.

  Brody — Tower Interior

  “Kahn—!” Brody shouts.

  Too late.

Kahn is already frozen solid, face blank, phone slipping from his hand and hitting the snow.

Brody swears and drags himself behind cover.

  “Fuck—fuck—fuck!”

Red cadets flood the tower from the rear.

The remaining Blue cadets don’t hesitate.

  They scatter.

Brody and a handful of others bolt, using the chaos to break contact.

Green cadets surge back toward the stronghold.

  Red pushes through.

  The tower changes hands.

  Maximus — Elsewhere

  Maximus lowers his rifle slowly.

  “…Shit.”

  No comm.

  No update.

  No Kahn.

  He already knows.

  Tower — Aftermath

  Red controls the structure.

Sagoya stands at the edge of the tower platform, weapon lowered.

Jeff approaches, his arm still half-frozen, medics working fast to restore movement.

  “Good work,” Jeff says.

  “Clean timing.”

  Sagoya says nothing.

  Just nods once.

  Lardes watches him.

  Frowns.

  He leans toward Julian.

“Where the hell was he?” Lardes mutters.

“Didn’t even know he was in the fight.”

  Julian shrugs.

“Don’t know, man. Wasn’t really paying attention.”

  Lardes looks back at Sagoya.

  Hmm.

  Cut — Observation Deck

High above the battlefield, behind reinforced glass, the inspectors watch holo-displays update in real time.

  One leans back.

“That was an interesting little engagement.”

  Another nods.

  “I liked Cadet 2.2387.”

  “Sagoya.”

  He taps the display.

“Vanished from the field long enough to take the tower from behind.”

  A third chuckles.

“Blue had that coming. Didn’t clear their trail properly.”

  He smirks.

“Told you the ambush would work.”

The first inspector sighs and asks for the inspectors Account.

  “Fine. Take your Stellars.”

  Another tilts his head.

  “Let’s see the numbers.”

  One inspector folds his arms.

  “Green still holds the stronghold.”

  Another shakes his head.

“Don’t know if that was the play.”

  “They’re already stretched thin.”

  He gestures to the map.

“Red controls the lower right tower.”

“Another Red unit is pushing from the lower left.”

“Orange is harassing the right flank.”

  A pause.

  “They’re defending three fronts now.”

  The first inspector smirks.

“Still putting my money on Blue.”

  Cut — Left Choke Point

Jackson Icon stands alone in the snow.

  Rifle steady.

Two Red cadets step into view.

  Freeze rounds crack.

  Both lock up and drop.

  Jackson exhales.
